The traditional school exercise book and pen could become history. Every pupil at Writhlinton School is being offered their own laptop (笔记本电脑) to use in class and for homework.
Buildings with wireless (无线的) systems will open soon. The laptop project will cost the school about £400,000. Parents are being asked to pay £2 per week for their children's laptop as long as the child stays at the school. Those unable to pay will receive economic aid (经济援助).
The headmaster, Will Roberts, says parents think it is a “bargain (划算的买卖)” because it's expensive to buy a laptop.
“With the help of the laptop, any time they want to learn, they can. Pupils, who are aged between 11 and 18, can complete homework by connecting to the school servers (服务器) from home. And their work can be marked at once and teachers share pupils' work away from the classroom.”
Mr. Roberts insists, however, that children will continue to use traditional learning materials. “There will always be a place for traditional writing and textbooks here,” he says. “But we want to prepare our pupils for the real world.”
The project was started with the help of the government-supported charity, the e-Learning Foundation (学习平台基金会). It is trying to make information technology (技术) more widely used in schools.
Spokesman, Kevin Pay, says using computers improves pupil's work speed“after all, there is no excuse for not having homework”.

Do you know the Homework (作业) Club (俱乐部) in US schools? The students do their homework in the afternoon at these clubs. Why do they have the club? The students always play games and watch TV after school, so the Homework Club is a quiet (安静的) place (地方) for them to do their homework. Teachers there can help them do their homework. After the students finish their homework, they can get a snack. It's always children's favorite food. Do you want to know the time and fee (费用)? Let's have a look.

“In this life, what did you miss?”
The wife asked the husband when she was 25.Despondently (沮丧地),the husband replied,“I missed a new job chance.”
When she was 35,the husband angrily told her that he had just missed the bus.
At the age of 45,the husband sadly said,“I missed the chance seeing my close relative before his last breath.”
At 55,the husband said disappointedly,“I missed a good chance to retire (退休).”
At 65,title husband hurriedly replied,“I missed visiting my dentist.”
At 75,the wife did not ask the husband any more, she was very sick.Remembering the question the wife used to ask him, this time the husband asked the wife the same question. The wife, with a smile and peaceful look, replied,“In this life,I did not miss having you!”
The husband was full of tears. He always thought that they could be together forever. He was always busy with work and other things. He had never thought of his wife. The husband gave a big hug to the wife and said,“Over 50years,how I had allowed myself to miss your deep love for me.”
Life does not last forever,so always live in the now.Don't neglect (忽视)the loved ones who care for you.Express your gratitude (感激)to your loved ones in words.Show your love with actions.Treat every day as the last day of life.In this way, when you are gone, your loved ones would have nothing to feel sorry about.
Giving gifts is a kind of knowledge, is also one kind of strategy(策略). In the western countries, you should be careful of giving gifts. Never give a gift in a job interview or at a business meeting. Gifts are usually given during special holidays, or as a “ thank you” for special invitations. When arriving at a special party, you may give your gift to the host once the introductions are made. Here are a few rules:
Be modest(适度) with your gift. Do not buy gifts that are too expensive, such as a Swiss watch, a gold ring or a gold necklace. A special food from your country, a bottle of wine, candy, or flowers are the best if you do not know the host very well, but be sure that your gift will not need much attention. You can usually say something like “ I hope you will like it.” when you offer your gift.
Be careful of giving wine. A bottle of wine is usually all right if you know your host drinks wine, but hard alcohol(酒精) such as whisky(威士忌) should only be given as a gift when you know the host well and are certain that they would like such a gift. Flowers are good, but remember: roses are for special love. You have to be careful.
A small cultural gift from your country is usually very good. Make sure that your gift is packed(包装) nicely. A nice card with it will be better.
In our culture, the ability to make one's own decisions is important. John F. Kennedy's quote(引语)"Too often we enjoy the comfort of opinion without the discomfort of thought." shows an unpleasant truth.
Much of what we know and believe has been taught to us by others, and we often accept this information without spending much time thinking it over for ourselves.
In today's world, we are being presented with information, ideas and beliefs, but many of them are against each other. Psychology(心理学)tells us that if we hear an idea enough times, or it comes from someone we respect(尊敬), we will probably believe that idea. In these cases, we base our opinions on the opinions of others. If each of us does not think about this information for ourselves and come to our own conclusions , we will become nothing more than parrots(鹦鹉) quoting the opinions of others.
Examples of spreading fake news without thought can be seen on the Internet. Some people believe whatever they read and then share the story without thinking about the facts. All it takes is one quick click(点击)of the "share" button, and the story travels on its way to influence even more unthinking readers. This can cause serious problems.
If we just stop for a moment to think about what we read and hear, and form our own opinions, we will be more thoughtful, more independent, and more creative people, but few take that time. Yet we need not lose heart over this bad habit. In fact, simply becoming aware (意识到) of it is the first step towards correcting it. Once we become aware that we tend(趋向)to hold opinions and beliefs without thinking them through, we can change that pattern of behavior. Hopefully, we can learn to experience and enjoy the "discomfort of thought" and form our own opinions.
It is true that people with better education are usually able to get better paying jobs. In other words, they have more chances to choose a good job while people with little or no education don't. It seems that the purpose of education is to make people get jobs. But this isn't accepted by all people.
Some people may think that a person should spend the best years of his life to get education only for a way of living. This was probably one of the earliest reasons of education. In fact, if education is just a way of making a living, people don't need to spend so much time in school. People can get education for a living in a short time. Subjects like history and geography need not be taught to everyone. Even language and math need not be taught in detail, either. Here it is clear that education is much more than teaching a man to get a way of living.
Education is well -rounded and it is mainly for improving a man. It is not only to teach him to speak, read and write, but also to develop his creative thinking and other abilities. After that, it is to make him a wise man and thankfully enjoy the achievements of human. Education is to make a man lead a better life. Educated people are expected to be able to listen to good music, read good books, watch plays and take an interest in the world.
I would agree that making a good living is an important reason for education, but certainly not the most important or the main reason.
TV Shopping: About 5%~8% of the Americans now shop by TV. They make a phone call when they see the product on TV and want to buy it. People can shop at any time, even late at night.
Online Shopping: Online shopping is popular with many people every day. People can see the pictures of the products on the Internet and then choose what they want, like books, food, clothes, and other things. One of the best advantages is that they can buy things at any time.
Catalogue(目录)Shopping: It's also a popular way of shopping in America. There are catalogues for almost everything you need, like clothes, furniture, food and so on. People also order (订购) about 40% of their music from music club catalogues.
When children are fitted with problems, they may not be able to deal with them. Children need to learn how to solve problems. You can help them to learn it.
The best way is to take the time to talk about problems as they happen. Of course, this is not easy to do. Problems have a way of bursting upon (突然发生) someone at the worst time.
There are many things you can do to help children learn problem-solving skills. One good way is to find out what made the problem happen. This is a skill that children won't learn without help. You can show children what the problem is. Then it can be solved.
The next step for children is to learn how to solve the problem alone. This step takes courage. Some of them are so afraid of being wrong that they can't solve problems. You can help them by talking about some possible solutions. Then two of you can decide which solution is the best. Let the children try it out. Now the children will see that problems can be solved, and you can praise them for choosing a right solution.
Another step of problem-solving is to help children see the laws of cause and effect (因果规律) If a glass is knocked over, it will fall and break. If children like to write on the wall, his pencil always leaves a mark. Soon the children will see the link between cause and effect, and then they are on the road to growth.
The ability to solve problems is complex for children to learn. It is not easy for adults, either. It takes patience for adults, and it takes practice for children. But problem-solving can be taught. All you need is time and effort.
Many birds in tropical (热带的) forests are colorful and beautiful.

It's 10 am on a school day morning in Shanghai and students are standing in lines on the playground, doing their morning exercises. As a teacher at the front calls out, "Yi, er, san, si..." the students extend their arms, then bring them to their chests; bend their knees, then straighten up. Many of the students seem bored.
Meanwhile, in a primary school in Xiangyang, Hubei Province, students are dancing to pop music. Which would you rather do?
Since 1951, morning calisthenics(健身操) have been a part of Chinese life. The school in Xiangyang wanted to make morning exercises more fun, so it looked to a group of people who seemed to really enjoy exercising damas(大妈)! These "aunties" dance on public squares each evening, often driving neighbours crazy with their loud music. But it is good exercise and they are having fun. So, why shouldn't students be allowed to follow their example?
Well, on the Internet, most posters said dancing in the primary school in Xiangyang looked funny. One poster said that calisthenics were old-fashioned and that "the organized movements leave no room for personal freedom".
Fitness is essential for young people. Too much study and too much computer time are making many young Chinese fat and unfit, so it's important that they become more active. And being active is the key, even if that means doing away with calisthenics and, instead, dancing like damas.
Do you know what family instructions are? They are common beliefs(信仰)that family members follow. In ancient China, people passed down their family instructions from generation to generation.
Some schools in Zhejiang are encouraging students to learn more about their own family instructions. At Hangzhou Gongyi Middle School and Hangzhou Xuejun High School, it was part of students' winter vacation homework to learn about their family instructions.
Meng Yaohan, 16, from Hangzhou Xuejun High School, looked at her family instructions. One of them is "Don't take the wrong way", a piece of advice that has been passed down for 100 years. Her father told her how her grandfather stuck to his "right way"—to become an engineer."It encouraged me to pursue what I love," she said.
Shen Duanjie,14,from Hangzhou Gongyi Middle School, has got good from his family instructions—"democratic"(民主的) and "equal". In his own words, they have helped him get along with his parents.
The school has also published(出版) books about two classic collections of family instructions—The Family Instructions of Zhu Xi and Family Instructions of Yan Clan. The books include dialogues and pictures drawn by students.
Gong Zhenyue, 14, drew pictures for one of the instructions in Family Instructions of Yan Clan. She was impressed(留下深刻印象) by the instruction, which says that parents should not only love their children, but also educate them. "It made me understand my parents' strictness with me," she said. She made it her own family instruction.
What are your clothes made of? Are they made of cotton or wool? Some students in Shandong wear different things. Their clothes are made of discs(光盘) or old paper!
On October 7th, 36 students in Linyi, Shandong Province, wore beautiful clothes in a show. Their clothes were made of all kinds of things.
The show gave the students a chance to make things with their own hands. It also helped them learn to make good use of(利用) waste and not to throw everything away.
Students had lots of good ideas. Some found used things, like old clothes, to make the dresses.
"We hope to save energy. Our world is short of energy. So I don't want to just throw old things away," said Xie Jing at Linyi Art School.
Xie had more than 20 discs on her nice blue dress, she got them from her family and friends.
"Though the discs are old, I look very cool in them!" she said.
Song Dandan, a student from the school , looked like a farmer in her straw(稻草) coat and hat. She picked the straw from the fields and put them all together.
"I want to show what people wore in the past." she said.
Du Yue made clothes for astronauts! She had white cloth all over her.
"I hope to wear it in space (太空) some day. I wish that I could walk on the moon!" she said.
Thirteen-year-old Cindy had been bullied (欺凌) at school for about two years. Her bag, keys and mobile phone had been stolen. She had also been knocked off her bicycle, kicked and punched (以拳重击).
Cindy tried to fight back, but it always seemed to be her, not the bullies, who got into trouble. She became so afraid of going to school that she started to be absent from her classes.
Finally, her headmaster set up a special plan, asking students to look after one another. He gave Cindy the courage to play the guitar in a school concert, which gave Cindy new confidence and helped her receive respect from the other students. Gradually, the bullying began to stop.
Cindy's story is not uncommon, but help is out there. All schools in the UK now have to follow strict bullying policies (政策). There are many charities and organizations giving support to young people, such as Bullying UK and Childline. So remember one very important piece of advice: If you are being bullied, don't put up with it—tell someone.
Young people are often unhappy when they are with their parents, because they think that their parents don't understand them. They often say their parents are too strict with them, and they are given too many rules but never given a free hand. Parents often find it difficult to win their children's trust and they seem to forget how they felt when they were young.
For example, young people like to do things without much thinking. It's one of their ways to show that they have grown up and they can deal with any difficult things. Older people worry more easily. Most of them plan things ahead and don't like their plans to be changed.
Young people often make their parents angry by the clothes they want, the music they enjoy and something else, but they don't mean to cause any trouble. The young just feel that in this way they can be cut off from the old people's world and they want to make a new culture of their own. But if their parents don't like their music or clothes or their manner of speech, the young people will feel very lonely.
If you plan to control your life, you'd better win your parents over and try to get them to understand you. If your parents see that you have high sense of responsibility(责任感), they will certainly give you the right(权利)to do what you want to do.
Reading for pleasure is the easiest(最容易的) way to become a better reader in English. It is also the most important way. Some students say they don't want to read for pleasure. They say they want to use their time to learn the rules of the language and new words. They say that pleasure reading(趣味阅读) is too easy.
Many experts(专家) say pleasure reading is very important for learning English. Dr. Stephen Krashen, a famous expert on learning languages, says that pleasure reading helps you learn many important things about English.
Students learn more grammar and more words when they read for pleasure. They also learn more about good writing. Dr. Krashen tells us that pleasure reading helps each student in a different way. Each student needs to learn something different. Pleasure reading makes it possible for each student to learn what he or she needs.
Reading for pleasure is not the same as studying. When you read for pleasure, you choose your own books, and you don't have to remember everything. There are no tests on your pleasure reading books. Pleasure reading will help you:
●learn how English speakers use English
●read faster in English
●find examples of good writing in English
●learn new words
●learn about the cultures of English speakers
You can seldom see homeless people on the street. So what could you do if you want to help them? Here are some ways.
Donate (捐赠) money. The easiest way to help the homeless is to donate your money. When you want to do that, you can donate your money to local organizations. Most charity organizations know where the most help is needed.

"What's success here?" When Finnish children are asked this question, the answer goes like this, "When you get a job, find a wife and have some money, you're successful" , or "Everyone is pretty and equal (平等的), and nobody is the most outstanding".
This is a country where people are so confident about their education. They even say: "If you ask me which school is the best, it's the one that's closest to home. "But when you walk into the local school, you might think you've arrived at an amusement park(游乐园)by mistake.
In Japanese kindergartens(幼儿园), children must run very fast and climb up and down with bare feet every morning to wake up their bodies.
Japanese children are taught to keep the group order and obey rules since they're in kindergartens. So they are asked to have the right posture(姿势)from an early age. Those little kids sitting together share the same posture.
But there are also worries that Japanese children might lose their personalities under such education. Japan has a new job in long-suppressed social relationships: Tear Therapist. This job mainly helps people cry.
And even in Finland, ▲ Some feel that Finland has lost its competitiveness because of its high welfare(福利). A headmaster at a local school thinks that the children are living a much easier life now with watching TV and playing games, who have lost the hardworking spirit of Finns.
