In many high schools, there are strict rules about using mobile phones. If your phone rings in class, for example, the teacher will be very angry.
Every mobile phone has a ringtone (铃声). It tells you that someone is calling you. Now,there is a ringtone called “mosquitotone (蚊子铃声)”. Using it,students can receive calls and text messages (短信) in class but the teacher will not realize what is happening. How?
Mosquitotone has a special sound. Only children and teenagers can hear it. As we get older,we are unable to hear some sounds with high frequencies (频率). As a result,a child or teenager can hear the mosquitotone ringtone, but it's_inaudible_to someone 20 or older.
But sometimes, people over 20 can hear the ringtone. One British student's phone uses mosquitotone. In class, the student's phone rang. The 32yearold teacher looked at the student and became unhappy. “I heard that. You know the rule:no mobile phone in class.”
Not all the students are interested in mosquitotone. Jerry Jones,a high school student of 17,says,“Using mosquitotone too often is bad for our hearing. I may use it for pleasure, but not in class. It's unfair to the teachers!”
What do parents think of mosquitotone?“I think it is perfect for places like movie theaters,” says Connie Neeson,44.“Think about it. Yon're watching a film and someone's mobile phone rings. Mosquitotone is good because many people don't hear it. However,it also has a bad influence on their study if students use it in class.”

Dear Madam or Sir,
One of the teachers at my school in Japan has told me that your school has summer courses. I am planning to go to the United States next summer and would like to take a one-month course.
I am 18 years old and I have been studying English for six years. I am going to study English at the university. I have ever been to a few countries, such as China, England, South Korea, but never to the US, and I think the trip will help me improve my English.
Could you send me a catalogue (目录)and an application form (表格)?I would also like information about New Hampshire and other places nearby.
I hope to do some traveling when the course is over.
Thank you. I am looking forward to your reply.
Yours,
Mariko Kobori
Education is not an end, but a means to an end. In 1 words, we don't educate children only for the purpose of 2 them. Our purpose is to fit them for future. In some modern countries, it has for some time been fashionable to think that by free education for all— 3 stupid or clever, poor or rich one can solve all the 4 of society and build a perfect nation. But we can already see that 5 education for all is not enough. We find in some countries a far 6 number of people with university degrees refuse to do what they think “low” work, and in fact, work 7 is thought to be dirty and shameful in such countries. But if we think only for a moment, we can understand that the work of a completely uneducated farmer is far more important than 8 of a professor. We can live 9 education, but we will die if we have no food. If no one cleaned our streets and took the 10 away from our houses, we should get terrible 11 in our towns.
12 , when we say that all of us must 13 to fit us for life, it means that we must have educated in such a way: Firstly , each of us can do whatever work suited to his brains and ability, and secondly, we can realize that all jobs are necessary to society and that it is very bad to be ashamed 14 one's work. 15 such a type of education can be thought valuable to society.
It is true that people with better education are usually able to get better paying jobs. In other words, they have more chances to choose a good job while people with little or no education don't. It seems that the purpose of education is to make people get jobs. But not all the people agree with this idea.
Some people may think that a person should spend the best years of his life to get education in order to make more money in the future. This was probably one of the earliest purposes of education. In fact, if education is just a way to make a living, people don't need to spend so much time in school. They can get education for a living in a short time. Subjects like history and geography need not be taught to everyone. And people don't have to learn maths and languages so carefully. So it is clear that education is much more than teaching a man to get a way of living.
So what is education for? Education is well—rounded and it should improve a man in many ways. It is not only to teach him to speak, read and write, but also to develop his creative* thinking and other abilities. After that, it is to make him a wise man and thankfully enjoy the achievements of human. Education is to make a man lead a better life. Educated people are expected to be able to listen to good music, read good books, watch plays and most of all, take an interest in the world.
I would agree that making a good living is an important reason for education, but certainly not the most important or the only reason.

To be a good teacher, you need some of the gifts of a good actor; you must be able to hold the attention and interest of your audience; you must be a clear speaker, with a good, strong, pleasing voice which is fully under your control; and you must be able to act what you are teaching, in order to make its meaning clear.
Watch a good teacher, and you will see that he does not sit still before his class: He stands the whole time he is teaching; he walks about, using his arms, hands and fingers to help him in his explanations, and his face to express feelings. Listen to him, and you will hear the loudness, the quality and the musical note of his voice always changing according to what he is talking about.
The fact that a good teacher has some of the gifts of a good actor doesn't mean that he will indeed be able to act well on the stage, for there are very important differences between the teacher's work and the actor's. The actor has to speak words which he has learnt by heart; he has to repeat exactly the same words each time he plays a certain part, even his movements and the ways in which he uses his voice are usually fixed beforehand (预先). What he has to do is to make all these carefully learnt words and actions seem natural on the stage.
A good teacher works in quite a different way. His audience takes an active part in his play: they ask and answer questions, they obey orders, and if they don't understand something, they say so. The teacher therefore has to meet the needs of his audience, which is his class. He cannot learn his part by heart, but must invent it as he goes along.
I have known many teachers who were fine actors in class but were unable to take part in a stage-play because they could not keep strictly to what another had written.
Are you good at English? Many Chinese students find 1 difficult to learn English, not Chinese, because Chinese is their mother language. In fact, Chinese is much more difficult to learn than English.
Still some students in other countries can speak Chinese very 2 .If you don't see them, you may think they are Chinese. What 3 them successful?
"For me, conversation is the most helpful. I try to speak in 4 .If you only listen to what others speak, you will be good at 5 .But if you talk as 6 as possible, you will find you can speak good Chinese, "says Jenny Brown, an English girl. Now she is 7 Chinese at Peking University. She is interested in China and 8 history. She thinks that to learn a language, one must try to know 9 about the country.
Chinese is different from English, 10 we can use the same way in learning it. It is conversation.
Television is good. You'd like to watch it all day and all night. But watching too much TV is a very bad thing. Scientists find that kids who watch too much TV may have more trouble learning to read. They can't focus on their work.
Kids learn language skills best by reading, talking and playing with others. If they spend too much time watching TV, they'll have less time for those things. Watching too much TV is bad for people's health. People don't move much while watching TV. What's more, they may eat a lot of food while watching. This can make them fat. We call these people "couch potatoes".
Fighting on TV is a big problem for kids. Young people are good at following. Scientists have found that those who watch a lot of fighting shows are more likely to fight.
A famous study was done in a school by a professor from a university. At the start of the school year, the teachers were given the names of five children. They were told that these five were the most excellent students in the class. But the fact was that these students were only average, and they were not the best students at all. Well, guess what? At the end of the year, all the five average students scored among the highest in the class.
What made these average students change so much to become top students? The only difference was the change in their teachers' attitude. Because the teachers believed that these five kids were top students, they expected more from them. And so these five average students became to believe and expect more from themselves. So they worked harder to do as well as they could.
Do you know? If you expect the best from people, they'll usually want to give you their best. A great leader said, "Treat a person just how he appears to be on the outside, and you'll make him even worse. But treat a person like he's already a success, and you'll help make him the best he can be. "
Like the true story of 7-year-old Johnny, his teacher got so angry with him that one day she said, "Johnny, you're the naughtiest boy in this class. I'm sure you'll never change. " The next year Johnny had a new teacher. And on the first day of class, she met with Johnny after school and said, "Johnny, I've heard a lot about you! But do you know that I don't believe a word of it. " And every day after that, this new teacher treated Johnny as if he was one of the smartest students even when Johnny did naughty things. Later on, Johnny became a school leader, because that's the power of our belief and attitude towards children.
Some parents think childhood is just for playing, so they don't ask their children to do housework.
Other parents say, "I know it's wrong, but it's quicker to do it by myself" But most parents believe that housework is a way of teaching kids responsibility(责任). Children learn to help, share and care about others by doing housework. Things like taking care of a pet or a baby and helping make meals are some examples of helping others.
Reasons for doing housework:
To learn responsibility: Most people believe that doing housework is good for kids.
To share the workload(工作负担): Kids that help clean won't make a big mess.
To learn skills: Kids will learn how to cook, clean and do other things in the house.
There are benefits(益处)and challenges when you are doing housework, so start to help your parents with the housework. You will learn a lot by doing them.
"How can I improve my English?" A lot of my students have been asking me about this same question again and again.1 the answer won't be suitable for everyone, I'm still going to tell you some of my experience. I hope that you will improve your English learning skills.
One thing I can tell you is that, once you start learning, you should try to think in English as
2as you can. If you see something when you're riding your bike or walking down the street, just3"How would I say them in English?" At first, you may think with simple words but later with longer sentences. Now I'm in America, and for4the time, I would think in English and speak it directly. It's amazing how much this helps.
When I started learning, I was5 afraid of talking with others in English because I didn't want to make mistakes. Finally, I had a chance to6. And while traveling in America, I'd try to hang out with American friends,7 I'd have no choice but to speak English. Also, I decided if I said anything stupid and other people would look8 me, then so be it. After that, my English started to9 much more quickly.
Besides, it may be a good idea to ask your American friends to look at the way you're writing, and give you some10 for improvement.
Are you popular? Do all the students and teachers in your school like you and know your name? For some of you, that may be true. Some students are much (popular). You may wonder makes them attractive and lovely to almost everyone.
We have a word for that in English: Charisma(个人魅力),an attractive, lovely and strong power. People are born it. But to be successful you need more than just charisma. You need more than just popularity. (be) successful in life, you have to be (friend) to others. You have to be honest and hard—working person. These are the things we all should try (have) and they are the things we are all able to do.
In school we may wish that we were the most popular students. We may wish that everyone liked us and everyone knew (we) names. But it's not something we should worry too much about Being popular is nice remember, life isn't a popularity contest. Honesty and hard work will be the keys to (succeed).
If you want to learn a foreign language well, you should follow some ways. Here (be) some advice for you.
First, you must know the importance of (listen) and speaking. You can listen to English programs on radio. You may only understand a few words at the beginning. , it's OK. Just be relaxed, try to listen for key words main ideas.
Somebody may be good listener, but he can't speak because he's afraid of making mistakes. Try to have conversations with your friends or foreigners in English. It is always a good way(practice) your spoken English. Remember, the more you speak, the (few) mistakes you will make.
Reading and writing are more important too. First, choose the books you are interested in. A lot of reading will improve your language skill. This is the (important) of all. Then, keep (write) English diaries. You can also write English articles if possible. You may even post them to English magazines. Don't worry failure(失败).
Your parents love you and care about you. As teenager, you should try to make them happy. Here is some advice.
Do your chores. Help your parents out when you see them working around the house.
Do well at school. Make (decision) to study hard every day. Parents want you to be a good student. You do not have to be the (good) one, but try your best. Don't give easily.
Develop interests in something. Find out you are good at, and join a club to improve yourself. It's great to have hobbies. Something like painting or reading (change) your life all the time.
Talk with your parents well. Do not talk back to your parents. In order (understand) them, find a right time to talk with them. They will be (exciting) to spend time talking with you.
Always listen. Listening to your parents will help you understand better. When you have (trouble), just ask them and be open to their opinions.
Do you think about turning off your TV? Maybe your life will be colorful. Many scientists also suggest children should watch less TV. TV can give children big problems. First, it's bad for their studies they __________________ too much time on TV. They can't do well in school. Second it's bad for their health, especially for their eyes, because they watch too much TV. Many children are getting "little fat man" and "little glasses". Third, it's bad for your family life. While your families are watching TV, they don't talk too much. Also it has too much fighting. Some children always follow the fighting in real life. If you turn off your TV for a week, maybe you can find something fun to do. Maybe you can read books, learn to swim or paint pictures.
What do you think? Would you want to have a try?
First, it's bad for their studies, they too much time on TV.
Now many students need to study online classes at home because of the COVID-19. But there is a problem— students have lessons online, they can't have P.E. classes face to face. To solve , Jeremy, a father of 3 boys, comes up with an idea. He starts a called "Heart and Hamer". In the class, his children can do some sports to keep .
"Look! The boys are having the ‘Heart and Hamer' class at the moment. All of them have big smiles on their faces. After finishing their classes, they have the ‘Heart and Hamer' class at once." Jeremy says. Usually, Jeremy them what exercise they need to do in the class. He also writes the rules for the class on the blackboard. The boys must them.
Jeremy also says. "Because of online classes, children don't get enough . Therefore, I wish to have more time to be them. To make them happy and healthy, I also them outside to do some interesting activities. Sometimes we have a race in the park. Sometimes we swim in the swimming pool. We all have a good time.
Sun Jiarui is a 10-year-old girl from a primary school in Wuxi, Jiangsu province. She got popular online for her cooking skills 1. Sun, who has been learning to 2 from her father since she was eight, can now cook more than 50 dishes. In November last year, stories of Sun's skillful cooking were 3 by People's Daily on its official Sina Weibo account.
In the coming term in September, primary and middle school pupils in China will find a new "practical activities" 4 in their school timetable, with at least one class every week. The new course has three kinds of 5: everyday chores, productive labor(劳动)and experience of new technologies.
Tony: Hello, everyone. I am Tony, the group leader. These are my group members, Betty, Darning and Ogling. As we know, Jinhua is a beautiful with a long history. But you may not know the two longest corridor bridges (廊桥) in China are here. They are Xijin Bridge and Shuxi Bridge. So we chose these two bridges as our project target(项目任务). Here is our presentation.
Betty: I'll introduce the process. First we made a plan about the time we would need and how to do the project. It took us three weekends to do online searching, visit the bridges, interview the local people and make the leaflet.
Darning: After collecting all the information and doing the necessary study, we have made them into a leaflet as our product. Let's take a look.
The two bridges are made of wood. They are called sister bridges because they look really similar. Xijin Bridge, the longest bridge, is in Yongkang and the second longest is in Wuyi called Shuxi Bridge.
Lingling: What we'd like to share with you most is our gains and feelings. We are all amazed by the wisdom(智慧) of the ancient bridge builders and feel so proud of our hometown.
Tony: Now, what do you think of our project? Your comments and suggestions are always welcome. Thank you.

①When it comes to Chinese students considering studying in foreign countries, many of them usually believe that life will be easy and enjoyable. Unfortunately, it's likely that students with those beliefs will be disappointed very soon after landing at the airport.
②So, what are the problems you may have, and how can you deal with them?
③Teaching and learning styles in America are very different from those in China, requiring more critical thinking(批判性思维) and teamwork. In a normal Americans classroom, one project might be done by a study group in which every person has their own responsibility.
④So don't worry about your language or any grammar mistakes. Just watch what other students do, and don't be afraid to ask any questions. The discussions, or sometimes even arguments, that your group members and you hold are likely to be the beginning of a friendship.
⑤Besides schoolwork, another important thing faced by overseas students is homesickness or loneliness. You may miss your parents' cooking, your pets, or even your old bed. Being away from home can create bitter feelings, especially when faced with the challenges of getting used to a new environment.
⑥What I strongly suggest is to try hard to deal with these feelings. Be open to new friendships. Sign up for school activities, and give yourself permission to enjoy life at school, even if you miss home a lot. Be organized and keep a diary to check your progress. Write down three new things that you're grateful for every evening, as well as three things you're looking forward to every morning.
⑦Studying aboard is never simple. In fact, there will be many difficulties every day. But I'm sure you will overcome your difficulties and make your time overseas a success.
