Traveling in Vietnam was like visiting a mysterious neighbor. You have lived next door to each other for years but know very 1 about what happened on 2 side of the fence.

I travelled there last August. A(n) 3 180-kilometre trip from a Chinese border town to Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam, 4 an adventurous eight hours. That's 5 the country still doesn't have a modern expressway system. The major passage going through the country is only a two-way road. 6, many areas are mountainous.

Vietnamese drivers are 7 and fearless. They compete with each other at full speeds no matter how scared the8feel. When the bus shook us violently for the hundredth time, the driver made a 9 to make us feel better. "See, this is just a(n)10Vietnamese people give you, a free massage(按摩) service."

It was midnight11I reached that hotel. Switching on the television, I was12by something: All the13in the TV plays spoke in the same voice. 14, modern Korean plays and historical Chinese plays are 15 with the Vietnamese. But it seemed they didn't have enough16to dub(为……配音)all these programs. So, the same boring woman appears17 every TV play to speak for the roles. The next morning when I opened the window, I found myself in a huge "18". The buildings in the streets were 19 in all kinds of colors you can imagine. Vietnamese are allowed to20their houses as they like. Each one was different. The large number of colors brought the city alive.

Lately I've been concerned about the environment. Last weekend I participated in the great Canadian shoreline 1. On that day, my mother and I arrived at 9:30 a.m. More than fifty people 2 and all the volunteers were divided into groups.

The shoreline has four sections with the last two being the most 3 terrain(地形)—steep hills, lots of trees and rocks. We chose section four and after a brief speech from the organizer, we set off. We saw a lot of waste along the way, like newspapers, ropes, bottles, caps, bricks and cigarette ends.

4, we filled almost 30 bags with 160.5 kilos of garbage, including 5 1,000—1,200 cigarette ends. It was amazing how much we were able to 6. I couldn't believe the 7 we made — the shoreline looked clean! 8, we had to leave the bricks as they would have broken our garbage and recycling bags! I did find one tire but it 9 so deep in the mud and dirt that I couldn't dig it out, 10 with the help of one of those metal rods.

11 the waste was easy; it was trying to keep a record of everything we found that was the 12 part. We had a sheet with many categories (种类) of items to 13. It's great to get all 14 but it wasn't much fun for the volunteer stuck 15 recording all the information. Our purpose was to make the shoreline 16, not to write lines and lines of what we have discovered.

We often hear some people 17 about their surroundings. If you are one of them, I'd like to say the only way to change things is by 18 rather than complaining. We need to teach by 19 . We can't blame others 20 we start with ourselves. I was very happy to make a small change by cleaning up a little bit of our shoreline.

For centuries, time was measured by the position of the sun with the use of sundials. Noon was recognized when the sun was the highest in the sky, and cities would set their clock by this apparent 1 time, even though some cities would often be on a slightly different time. Daylight Saving Time (DST), sometimes called summer time, was 2 to make better use of daylight. Thus, clocks are set forward one hour in the spring to move an hour of daylight from the morning to the evening and then set back one hour in the fall to return to 3 daylight.

Benjamin Franklin first conceived the idea of daylight saving during his term as an American delegate in Paris in 1784 and wrote about it 4 in his essay, “An Economical Project.” It is said that Franklin awoke early one morning and was surprised to see the sunlight at such an hour. Always the 5, Franklin believed the practice of moving the time could save on the use of candlelight, as candles were expensive at the time.

In England, builder William Willett (1857–1915) became a strong supporter for Daylight Saving Time upon noticing blinds(百叶窗) of many houses were 6 on an early sunny morning. Willet believed everyone, including himself, would appreciate longer hours of light in the evenings. In 1909, Sir Robert Pearce 7 a bill in the House of Commons to make it obligatory(义务) to 8 the clocks. A bill was drafted and introduced into Parliament several times but met with great opposition, mostly from farmers. 9, in 1925, it was decided that summer time should begin on the day following the third Saturday in April and close after the first Saturday in October.

The U.S. Congress passed the Standard Time Act of 1918 to establish standard time and 10 and set Daylight Saving Time across the continent. This act also devised(制定) five time 11 throughout the United States: Eastern, Central, Mountain, Pacific, and Alaska. The first time zone was set on “the mean astronomical time of the seventy-fifth degree of longitude west from Greenwich” (England). In 1919, this act was abandoned.

President Roosevelt established year-round Daylight Saving Time (also called War Time) from 1942–1945. However, after this period, each state 12 its own DST, which proved to be 13 to television and radio broadcasting and transportation. In 1966, President Lyndon Johnson created the Department of Transportation and signed the Uniform Time Act. As a result, the Department of Transportation was given the responsibility for the time laws. During the oil embargo(禁运) and energy crisis of the 1970s, President Richard Nixon 14 DST through the Daylight Saving Time Energy Act of 1973 to conserve energy further. This law was 15 in 1986, and Daylight Saving Time was reset to begin on the first Sunday in April (to spring ahead) and end on the last Sunday in October (to fall back).

The term "staycation" means vacations that you take at home or near your home rather than traveling to another place. It is closely connected with less pollution, saving money and not contributing to the overwhelming disorder that takes place in some of the world's most touristic areas.

The concept of staycation was born at the time of the 2008 market1in the United States. Because of it, many households were forced to2their expenses and consequently limit their vacation budget. The shortage of money to travel abroad is at the origin of why many people started to (re) discover their most3surroundings

At the same time, awareness of the4impacts of tourism, especially on what concerns the impacts of transportation, started to increase too. And so did the perception that some of the main cities (abroad) are increasingly overloaded with people-- with places such as Barcelona, Venice, or the Seychelles planning on 5a tourist cap.

Staycation appears like a great solution for the6above mentioned. It is a great way of spending joyful vacations while helping one's7and the environment. 8staying close to home eliminates the budget for accommodation and transport.

Apart from the financial 9gained by leaving behind expensive plane tickets or by not booking hotel rooms that aren't cheap, staycation also has the benefit of keeping harmful 10in the ground. Cars, boats, and planes are not (or are less) used; 11other means of transport such as public transport, bicycles, electric scooters or just walking are favored.

This allows people's carbon footprints not to12as much as they would if long distances had been traveled.

A staycation is a form of alternative tourism that is fully in line with the slow tourism trend. Slow tourism invites you to live in the13moment. It encourages you to take your time, discover nearby landscapes, reconnect and spend more time outdoors in nature with the people you enjoy. There are no fully-booked days, and there is no14to go from one activity to another just to stay busy all the time.

Given the multiple15of local tourism, you no longer have a reason to be embarrassed at the coffee machine at work when you are asked where you are going on vacation this year.

Maybe you haven't 11 it, but I'm sure you have heard about William Shakespeare —the great man's 12. In Stratford-upon-Avon, I could 13 Shakespeare's Birthplace, Shakespeare Countryside Museum, the Royal Shakespeare Theatre, and a lot of places that are connected with 14.

I also went to see the Shakespeare Exhibition. It illustrated (展示,说明) Shakespeare's life and career in both Stratford and London.

Many people enjoy taking trips by themselves. Unluckily, they do not always have the best 1. Instead, people should consider group tours. Taking a group tour is a wise choice for people to 2themselves.

First, group tours plan travelers' routes, so people don't have to 3where they are going next or how they are getting there. They can just 4and enjoy their trip. 5, my family once took a group tour to China. The travel agency (旅行社)6everything for us. We just looked at the schedule the travel agency had7and followed it. Thanks to the travel agency, we had a 8trip. This made things 9on my father since he didn't have to worry about where we would go next and 10at night.

Another11of group tours is that they allow people to communicate with one another while traveling. Travelers are able to develop12with people they would never have met 13they are traveling together for a number of days. As I know, my parents 14Russia on a group tour for their honeymoon (蜜月). They 15another couple on that trip, and everyone had a great time together. Even after many years, they still 16together from time to time.
