Douglas Florian teaches readers about bees in a new book of poems called UnBEElievables. In his latest book, each poem is paired with a colorful image that illustrates(图解) a different type of bee and its role in the group. Every page is full of fun and interesting facts about these social insects.

TFK: When you brainstorm for a story, which comes first: the images or the poems?

FLORIAN: Usually the poems come first. For a book of 21 poems, for example, I'll actually write about 50 poems first. Although I sometimes have images in my mind to go along with the words, I have to choose which ones I want to include in the book.

TFK: Many of your books, including UnBEElievables, are about insects and animals. How did these become your favorite subjects?

FLORIAN: There is so much humor in the animal world. People have a lot of knowledge about animals and ideas about animals that are fun to explore in writing. Animals are just so interesting. When I research, I find out so many new and amazing facts. The poem is often half written by the time I have done with my research.

TFK: Why did you choose bees as the subject of your latest book?

FLORIAN: I saw recently in the news that many bees are dying out. Scientists believe this to be caused by various diseases. I wanted to create awareness and learn more about bees after hearing this. So many of the fruits and vegetables we eat are dependent on pollination(授粉) by honeybees. If bees disappear, so will much of our food.

TFK: Do you have a favorite bee?

FLORIAN: One of my favorites is the poem and painting about the worker bees. I wanted the painting to be very playful and light. These bees have to work all day, and it's kind of like a factory. And even though these bees have to work very hard, they manage to smile.

  1. (1) UnBEElievables is a book about                 .

    A . insects B . images C . stories D . fruits
  2. (2) Why did Douglas Florian choose bees as the subject of his latest book?

A . Because bees are easy to explore in writing. B . Because he wants people to protect bees. C . Because he has no idea about bees. D . Because bees are going to die out.
  3. (3) Douglas Florian likes the worker bees best mainly because of their                 .

    A . hard work B . great contribution C . dangerous situation D . attitude towards working

Dear Sir,

I am writing to express my concern about the plans to build a motorway near our village.

Haldersham is one of the loveliest villages in England. It is peaceful and quiet, and it is situated in a very attractive valley. There are also several beautiful countryside walks in the surroundings, with a view of many rare trees and plants.

Most of the people who live in Haldersham have moved here from other places, often from London and other big cities. They have bought houses here to live in a place far away from the noise and the stress of the big city. They paid a lot of money for their houses, but they knew they would get a high quality of life for it.

If the planned motorway is built, life in Haldersham will change greatly. There will be a lot of noise around us, and nobody will want to go on the walks. House prices will certainly go down, because nobody will want to buy houses in a place close to a motorway. Haldersham will become an ugly place.

I don't think any of the people living in this beautiful village want that, and we all believe exposure to noise pollution can have a direct influence on our health. So, let's all tell the politicians who support the motorway plans what we think about them!

Yours faithfully,

Hilary Riley

  3. (3) What's the purpose of the letter?

A . To give an introduction of Haldersham. B . To show grateful thanks to the politicians. C . To express disapproval about the motorway. D . To offer suggestions on building the motorway.

    Dazha Crabs from Yangcheng Lake

With the Mid-Autumn Festival coming, the time for crabs is around the corner! Dazha Crabs from Yangcheng Lake in China are believed to be the best freshwater crabs.

“They are delicious, because the bottom of Yangcheng Lake is hard and the crabs grow strong by walking on such a hard surface,” said one sales manager in Suzhou.

They are often enjoyed with vinegar mixed with minced ginger to add flavor and get rid of the cold. People who are particular about how they eat crabs also need to have high-grade Shaoxing rice wine to warm their stomachs.

Many years ago three soldiers, hungry and tired of battle, came upon a small village. The villagers, suffering a bad harvest and the many years of war, quickly hid what little they had to eat and met the three in the village square, shaking their heads and sighing, “Well, we are starving.” The soldiers communicated with each other quietly and then the first soldier turned to the villagers. “Your poor fields have left you nothing to share, so we will share what little we have: the secret of making soup from stones.”

Naturally the villagers were intrigued and soon a fire was built to the villager's greatest pot, and then the soldiers dropped in three smooth stones.

“Now this will be a fine soup,” said the second soldier, “but a handful of salt and some parsley (香芹) would make it wonderful!” Up jumped a villager, crying “What a piece of luck! I've just remembered where some has been left!”

And off she ran, returning with parsley. As the pot was boiling, the memory of the villagers improved: soon carrots, beef and cream had found their way into the great pot.
