The Internet has opened up a whole new online world for us to meet, chat and go where we've never been before.

But just as in face to face communication, there are some rules of behavior that should be followed when on line.  Imagine how you'd feel if you were in the other person's shoes. For anything you're about to send: ask yourself, “Would I say this to the person's face?” If the answer is no, rewrite and reread.

If someone in the chat room is rude to you, your instinct(本能) is to fire back in the same manner. But try not to do so. If it was caused by a disagreement with another member, try to fix the situation by politely discussing it. Remember to respect the beliefs and opinions of others in the chat room.

Offer advice when asked by newcomers, as they may not be sure what to do or how to communicate. When someone makes a mistake, whether it's a stupid question or an unnecessarily long answer, be kind about it. If it's a small mistake, you may not need to say anything. Even if you feel strongly about it, think twice before saying anything. Having good manners yourself doesn't give you license to correct everyone else. At the same time, if you find you are wrong, be sure to correct yourself and apologize to those that you have offended(冒犯). It is not polite to ask others personal questions such as their age, sex and marital(婚姻的) status. Unless you know the person very well, and you are both comfortable with sharing personal information, don't ask such questions.

A. If you do decide to tell someone about a mistake, point it out politely.

B. It's natural that there are some people who speak rudely or make mistakes online.

C. Repeat the process till you feel sure that you'd feel comfortable saying the words to the person's face.

D. Everyone was new to the network once.

E. The basic rule is simple: treat others in the same way you would want to be treated.

F. When you send short messages to a person online, you must say something beautiful to hear.

G. You should either ignore the person, or use your chat software to block their messages.

Tom is (扩大) his story into a novel.

Dear John,

My name is Amber and I want to share my story with you because what you've shared about life and positive energy has changed my life. This past year has been one of the hardest for me. I felt I was stuck in a position that had nothing to do with what I wanted to do with my life. In January, after two years of being together, my boyfriend left me.

I read your blog every morning as I drink my coffee at work, but it wasn't until this March that I told myself "no more negativity" as you taught readers in your blog.

Since then I've got into new habits at work to keep my energy positive. When people walk in the front door, I'm the first face they see, so I smile big when I say "good morning" to them, especially on Mondays. Instead of waiting for someone to ask me for help, I offer it with an open mind. The CEO noticed my change and offered me the executive assistant position that I wanted.

One of the biggest things I've taken to heart from your blog is changing my opinions on my job. Yes, it was not an important position, but when I was passionate (热情的) about it, I could make my life fulfilling.

All in all, I have to thank you somehow for having the passion to help others because it truly is inspiring to me. So thank you so much, John. My life has changed because your words pointed me in the right direction, Take care!

Sincerely ,

Amber

For long, there was a little boy with a bad temper. His father gave him a bag of nails and told him that every time he lost his temper, he would hammer a nail in the back fence.

The first day the boy had driven 37 nails into the fence. Then it gradually dwindled(逐渐减少) down. He discovered it was easier to hold his temper than to drive those nails into the fence. Finally the day came when the boy didn't lose his temper at all.

He told his father about it and the father suggested that the boy now pull out one nail for each day when he was able to hold his temper. The days passed and the young boy was finally able to tell his father that all the nails were gone. The father took his son by the hand and led him to the fence. He said, “You have done well, my son, but look at the holes in the fence. The fence will never be the same. When you say things in anger, they leave a scar just like this one. You can put a knife in a man and draw it out. It won't matter how many times you say I'm sorry, the wound is still there. A verbal (言语的) wound is as bad as a physical one. Friends are a very rare jewel, indeed. They make you smile and encourage you to succeed. They lend an ear, they share a word of praise, and they always want to open their hearts to us.     It was the first snow of winter—an exciting day for every child but not for most teachers. Up until now, I had been able to dress myself for recess(课间休息), but today I would need some help. Miss Finlayson, my kindergarten teacher at Princess Elizabeth School near Hamilton, Ontario, had been through first snow days many times in her long career, but I think she may still remember this one.

I managed to get into my wool snow pants. But I struggled with my jacket because it didn't fit well. It was a hand-me-down from my brother, and it made me wonder why I had to wear his ugly clothes. At least my hat and matching scarf were mine, and they were quite pretty. Finally it was time to have Miss Finlayson help me with my boots. In her calm, motherly voice she said, "By the end of winter, you will be able to put on your own boots." I didn't realise at the time that this was more a statement of hope than of confidence.

I handed her my boots and stuck out my feet. Like most children, I expected the adult to do all the work. After much wiggling and pushing, she managed to get the first one into place and then, with a sigh, worked the second one on too.

I announced, "They're on the wrong feet." With the grace that only experience can bring, she struggled to get the boots off and went through the joyless task of putting them on again. Then I said, "These aren't my boots, you know." As she pulled the offending boots from my feet, she still managed to look both helpful and interested. Once they were off, I said, "They are my brother's boots. My mother makes me wear them, and I hate them!" Somehow, from long years of practice, she managed to act as though I wasn't an annoying little girl. She pushed and shoved, less gently this time, and the boots were returned to their proper place on my feet. With a great sigh of relief, seeing the end of her struggle with me, she asked, "Now, where are your gloves?"

I looked into her eyes and said, "I didn't want to lose them, so I put them into the toes of my boots."

  1. (1) According to the passage, the little girl got          from her brother.
A . the wool snow pants and the jacket B . the jacket and the boots C . the jacket and the hat D . the boots and the gloves
  2. (2) What made it so hard for the teacher to help the little girl put her boots on?
A . The gloves in the toes of the boots. B . The slowness of the teacher. C . The wrong size of the boots. D . The big feet of the girl.
  3. (3) Which of the following sentences from the passage best indicates that the teacher is very considerate?
A . In her calm, motherly voice she said, "By the end of winter…"(Paragraph 2) B . With the grace that only experience can bring, she struggled to.… (Paragraph 4) C . she still managed to look both helpful and interested. (Paragraph 4) D . she managed to act as though I wasn't an annoying little girl. (Paragraph 4)

No poem should ever be discussed or “analyzed”,until it has been read aloud by someone,a teacher or a student.Better still, perhaps,is the practice of reading it twice, once at the beginning of the discussion and once at the end,so the sound of the poem is the last thing one hears of it.

All discussions of poetry are,in fact, preparations for reading it aloud, and the reading of the poem is,finally, the most telling “interpretation” of it,suggesting tone, rhythm, and meaning all at once.Hearing a poet read the work in his or her own voice,on records or on film,is obviously a special reward. But even those aids to teaching can not replace the student and the teacher reading it or,best of all, reciting it.

I have come to think,in fact, that time spent reading a poem aloud is much more important than “analyzing” it,if there isn't time for both.I think one of our goals as teachers of English is to have students love poetry.Poetry is “a criticism of life” and “a heightening(提升)of life”.It is “an approach to the truth of feeling”,and it “can save your life”.It also deserves a place in the teaching of language and literature more central than it presently occupies.

I am not saying that every English teacher must teach poetry. Those who don't like it should not be forced to put that dislike on anyone else. But those, who do teach poetry must keep in mind a few things about its essential nature, about its sound as well as its sense, and they must make room in the classroom for hearing poetry as well as thinking about it.

  1. (1) According to the passage,to have a better understanding of a poem, the best way is

A . to discuss it with others B . to analyze it by oneself C . to hear it read out D . to practice reading it aloud
  2. (2) What does the last sentence in the third paragraph imply(暗示)?

A . The teaching of poetry should have been much more stressed. B . The teaching of poetry is more important than the teaching of any other subject. C . One cannot enjoy life fully without an understanding of poetry. D . Poetry is the foundation of all languages and literature courses.
  3. (3) The underlined phrase “make room” in the last paragraph can be best replaced by“   ”.

    A . build a booth B . provide equipment C . leave a certain amount of time D . set aside enough space
  4. (4) Which of the following is NOT mentioned as a function of poetry?

    A . Extending your life. B . Saving your life. C . Criticizing life. D . Heightening life.
