I went out to breakfast this morning to meet a friend. Everything was lovely. But what wasn’t so lovely was the lady who took our order. She spoke in a way that was frustrated, unhappy, certainly not friendly, and sort of rude.
When it came to my turn to approach her and order. I thought to myself, “What can I do here to make her day?” Surely there must be something I can sincerely compliment(称赞)her on. Then there it was and I knew instantly. Or more so heard instantly. It was her voice. She had the most unbelievably well-spoken and clear voice. It was so good. That was it. That was what I would compliment her on.
So after she took my order and gave me the same unfriendly attitude I told her. “I hope you don’t mind me saying but you have the most amazing voice. It’s so clear, well-spoken and sounds so professional.” I told her how she honestly had one of those voices that would be perfect for announcements or even radio. Her whole face lit up. She smiled (the first time I had seen her do so) and as I left and walked away, I noticed her whole attitude change. The customer behind me received a totally different kind of service. A happier one. All because of what I did. Something so simple!
There was a time when this sort of thing would have embarrassed the hell out of me. Or I’d have been way too shy and awkward to say such a thing. Not now. Now I must! Why? Because I have the power. The power to completely change someone’s day by something as simple as a few kind words and being kind. And you have this power too. We all do.

From Mozart to Metallica, tons of people enjoy listening to various types of music while they paint, write, or draw. Many believe that music helps boost creativity, but an international study conducted by English and Swedish researchers is challenging that belief. Their findings indicate music actually stymies creativity.
To come to their conclusions, researchers had participants complete verbal insight problems designed to inspire creativity while sitting in a quiet room, and then again while music played in the background. They found that background music “significantly damaged” the participants’ ability to complete tasks associated with verbal creativity. The research team also tested background noises such as those commonly heard in a library, but found that such noises had no impact on subjects’ creativity. The tasks were simple word games. For example, participants were given three words, such as dress, dial, and flower. Then, they were asked to find a single word associated with all three that could be combined to form a common phrase or word. The single word, in this case, would be “sun” (sundress, sunflower, etc). Participants completed the tasks in either a quiet room, or while exposed to three different types of music; music with unfamiliar lyrics, instrumental music, or music with familiar lyrics.
“We found strong evidence of damaged performance when playing background music in comparison to quiet background conditions,” says co-author Dr. Neil McLatchie of Lancaster University.
Dr. McLatchie and his colleagues theorize that music interferes with the verbal working memory processes of the brain, blocking creativity. Also, as far as the library background noises having seemingly no effect, the study’s authors believe that was the case because library noises create a “steady state” environment that doesn’t disrupt concentration. It’s worth mentioning that even familiar music with well known lyrics damaged participants’ creativity, regardless of whether or not it caused a positive reaction, or whether participants typically studied or created while listening to music.
“To conclude, the findings here challenge the popular view that music strengthens creativity, and instead demonstrate that music, regardless of the presence of semantic (语义的) content (no lyrics, familiar lyrics or unfamiliar lyrics), consistently disrupts creative performance in insight problem solving,” the study reads.
【1】Why are Mozart and Metallica mentioned at the beginning?
A.To prove they are very creative. B.To introduce the topic of the text.
C.To show the importance of music. D.To offer some background information.
【2】What does the underlined word “stymies” in the first paragraph probably mean?
A.Blocks. B.Boosts.
C.Inspires. D.Strengthens.
【3】If the participants were given the words fire, place and book during the game, a proper answer could be .
A.man B.store
C.work D.birth
【4】What do we know about the study?
A.The tasks were very difficult for participants to finish.
B.All participants were exposed to two different types of music.
C.Music with famous lyrics didn’t harm participants’ creativity.
D.Library background noises hardly affected participants’ creativity.

For the latter part of the 1900s, most alcohol advertising on TV was banned. During this time, the number of minors(未成年人) drinking alcohol declined. Several years ago the ban was lifted and alcohol ads returned to television. Since then the number of minors drinking alcohol has grown.
A study conducted by the University of California Berkley shows that alcohol ads increase the abuse of alcohol, positive attitudes to it, and consumption of it in minors. Congressman Wolfe from Virginia also finds that alcohol advertising increases drunk driving and alcohol abuse in under-age individuals. A survey completed in California and South Dakota schools finds that teens that are frequently exposed to alcohol advertising often begin consuming it in the next year or so.
Adolescence is a time of brain development when anything that provides a thrill, like alcohol, is an attraction. And minors drink alcohol mainly to be like their friends. From a very early age, children want to fit in. Other than socializing, some doing that just try to cope with problems or stress. However, drinking alcohol will bring about many problems. Getting rid of these ads would lessen the under-age individuals’ urges to consume or abuse alcohol.
The companies who produce the ads say they target audiences well into adulthood by using older actors. They call it “Responsible Advertising”. The truth is that these companies well know that their ads are played in front of minors. They even try to appeal to teens by using music, animals, and humor which according to several studies are all the things that under-age individuals respond to in an advertisement. Do these companies really believe that simply stating “consume responsibly” and showing no visible consumption of alcohol really cover their actual intentions?
After all these studies and surveys are taken into account, one conclusion is clear: the companies who make the ads know very well that they are supporting underage drinking and alcohol abuse. People can stand up against these companies by addressing Congress to take action and re-ban these ads. If enough people voice their concerns, they can do just that.
【1】The author mentioned the findings in the second Paragraph___________.
A.to show alcohol ads’ negative effects on minors
B.to tell us the danger of minors’ drunk driving
C.to tell us the harm of minors’ drinking alcohol
D.To show the Congressman’s attitude towards minor’s consuming alcohol

A.the reason why alcohol ads attract minors
B.the reason why minors tend to drink alcohol
C.the way that alcohol affects minor’s life
D.the way that minors handle problems with alcohol
【3】What can we infer from the passage?
A.Minors tend to do what they are forbidden to.
B.Minors know little about “consume responsibly”.
C.The ad companies’ target consumers actually include minors.
D.The ad companies employ older actors mainly to attract adults.
【4】What is the passage mainly about?
A.The phenomenon about the alcohol consumption.
B.The reasons for minors’ consumption in alcohol.
C.Alcohol advertising and its effects on minors.
D.The reasons for banning alcohol consumption in minors.
