Ya Ting had taken me under her wing after hearing me speaking Chinese in a hotel in Lijiang. She had been hitchhiking(搭便车旅行) around China for months. She invited me to travel with her, which was how we ended up on the side of the road looking for a ride to the Tiger Leaping Gorge.Within 20 minutes, we had our first ride. The driver couldn’t take us all the way and ended up dropping us at a freeway crossroads. As a new hitchhiker, I thought that would be the end of our luck, but almost immediately we got another ride.
Our most unforgettable ride was when a twenty-something kid picked us up.He couldn’t take us the whole way so his uncle bought us lunch and a bus ticket for the rest of the journey. He felt it was his duty to help us find a way to complete our trip.It brought tears of joy and thankfulness to my eyes. This was the first time I understood how guests are respected(受尊重) in China.
A few weeks later, we said goodbye.I thought we had been so lucky because we had been a local(本地人) and a foreigner travelling together. But now Ya Ting was no longer around to do the talking, nor did I have someone to depend on if something went wrong. When I stood by a highway in Sichuan, I knew all about the difficulties before me.Now I was just a strange foreigner on her own who suddenly had to manage with poor Chinese.
After about 30 minutes, a couple picked me up and took me the whole eight hours to Chengdu. We ate lunch on the way, and they refused to allow me to pay for any of it, which I had come to learn was typical(特有的) of Chinese culture. This made me believe that people weren’t being friendly because of Ya Ting.

Just the other day,I was driving my son to the parttime job that he had at a workshop for the disabled. The sky was very dark.A cold rain was pouring down. The world seemed silent and sad with both people and animals taking shelter from the storm.I turned on the car radio for music to make me calm. When I did, however,Karen Carpenter's sweet voice came out, singing,“Rainy days and Mondays always get me down.”I turned off the radio. That was not the song I wanted to hear on such a day.Still, the song kept playing in my head as the showers(阵雨)continued throughout the day.
Later that afternoon,I was walking out of the bathroom when I saw my son turn on the television.A classic movie was playing and suddenly I heard these musical tones(曲调)coming from Gene Kelly's voice,“I'm singing in the rain, just singing in the rain. What a glorious feeling.I'm happy again.I'm laughing at clouds,so dark up above. The sun's in my heart and I'm ready for love.”
At that moment I saw that God in his lovingkindness had reminded me once again that all of life is a choice to love.Rains and problems will always come.We can let them get us down or we can choose to sing.We can let the showers soak our souls(灵魂)or we can use them to help our souls grow.We can allow the darkness to make us sad or we can use it to awaken the sunshine and love in our hearts.
What are you going to do when the rains of life fall down upon you?I choose to sing.I choose to sing with all the love that God has put in my heart.I choose to share my sunshine even in the darkest days and never let my music die within me.May you do the same.

It was somewhere between spring and summer my mom and I were driving through the countryside Back then I was 13 years old and always felt unhappy with Mom. But little did I know that this trip was going to be a special one.
A pot of flowers sat in the back seat, whose heavenly scent filled the car. Suddenly, in the middle of nowhere, my mom pulled over. “What are you doing?” I cried, fearing that the car had broken down and we’d be stuck there, so far from home. But that wasn’t the case. My mom hopped out of the car, grabbing the flowers from the back seat. “It’ll just be a minute” she called back through the open windows.
My eyes impatiently skimmed the edge of the road before settling on a little sign showing that it was a nursing home. I looked back to the building, somewhat annoyed, as my mom reappeared—empty-handed.
Before she started the car, curiosity drove me to ask, “Do you know someone there?” She shook her head. “Then what did you do with the flowers?” She smiled slightly, “I gave them to the receptionist (前台接待员).” “What?” She laughed at my confusion. “I told the receptionist to give the flowers to whoever needed them, especially who hasn’t gotten any in a while.”
I kept silent for a moment. Not long after we continued our driving, I spoke again,“Did you leave your name?” To this she answered instantly, “No. Leaving flowers there for someone who will appreciate them makes me feel good, which is enough of a thank for me.”
Suddenly, still thinking about Mom’s deeds, I heard something burst loudly. It was our car that broke down! Nothing could be worse, because neither my mom nor I understood how to repair it, and we didn’t know where the garage was. It also seemed impossible to wait for any passer-by, since we had seen so few along the way.
We were worrying about what could be done. ______________________________________
As we drove along, a flower shop came into sight on the road. ________________________
