As I think of our friendship, I begin to see.
Mere words can’t describe what you mean to me.
When this cold world gives me lonesome and blue,
I look up to see my angel, my sweet angel, you.

You dry the tears that fall from my eyes.
You bring me sunshine to brighten my sky.
You rescue me when I’m scared and alone.
And take my hand to lead me home.

No matter the miles that keep us apart,
We’re always together in each other’s heart.
Sometimes we take for granted, I fear,
The ones who are so close and dear.

We got so caught up in life and things we must do.
Sometimes we forget to stop and say I love you.
If ever you felt I forgot or didn’t care,
Let me stop right now; my true feelings I’ll share.

You’re the sun in my sky, the bed where I lie.
the home where I’m safe, the field where I play.
You are everything I am, everything I do.
So what I am saying is __________!

If we think of Earth’s natural resources (自然资源) as a bank account (账户), then we have already used up most of the “money” that Earth saved. Have you ever heard of Earth Overshoot Day (EOD, 地球生态超载日)? The Global Footprint Network (全球足迹网络), a nonprofit (非营利的) organization based in the United States, Belgium and Switzerland, calculates (计算) this day. It keeps records of how many new resources the earth can create in one year and how much water, land, fish and forest human beings use, as well as how much CO2 we’re emitting (排放) in one year.
It has been marking EOD since 1971. At first, it was somewhere between September and October. In 2018, EOD was marked on August 1st, and in 2019 it was on July 29th. Each year, the human population grows and more resources are used. That’s why EOD has moved forward by more than two months over the last 20 years.
Human beings are now using natural resources 1.75 times faster than they can be renewed (再生). This has affected the environment in a bad way. For instance, wildfires are becoming more frequent (频繁的). Cities around the world are running out of water. Up to 1,000,000 species (物种) could die out because of human activities. However, humans are taking some small steps to deal with the problem. Countries like China and India are trying their best to green the planet. But there’s still a very long way to go.

When it comes to shopping for clothes, my mother and I have always disagreed on what fits (适合) me well. To me, if it zips (拉上拉链), it fits. My mom, however, usually says I need a bigger size. When I was a teenager, I wanted to dress like my friends, but my body size made it impossible. When mom told me something didn’t suit me, or I needed a bigger size, all I heard was that my body was wrong. To avoid arguments, we stopped going shopping together.
This continued until I got engaged (订婚) last year and needed to buy a wedding dress. Maybe I could buy it alone, of course, but my mom is the most important person in my life. The idea of looking for a wedding dress without her seemed just inappropriate (不恰当的). Although the experience of taking her with me sounds pretty scary, I would still like to try it.
And so the day came. As I tried on a simple white dress, I saw tears in my mom’s eyes. “You look beautiful!” she told me. Nothing could have shocked me more. This one didn’t zip up at the back and I did actually need a bigger size, but my mother didn’t say that. She just told me how beautiful I looked. At that moment, all the arguments in the past were erased off (抹去).
We didn’t buy a dress that day. We decided to see more, which I would never have predicted. A few weeks and many shopping trips later, we found the perfect dress. We all mess up (把事情搞砸). We’re humans and it’s not always easy to get along well with everyone all the time. Sometimes we hurt people’s feelings, so we apologize.
Apologies are one of the tools we use to build good relationships. When you say “I’m sorry”, it’s because you probably feel bad that something you did or said hurt another person. Saying you are sorry is more than just words. You’re also saying that you respect the other person and you care about his or her feelings. After apologizing, you might feel a little better. The other person probably will, too. When you apologize in a caring way, you can feel good because you are trying to make things right again.
When we find ourselves in any of the following situations, an apology can probably make a big difference.
●If you hurt or teased (嘲弄) someone, even you didn’t mean it.
●If you lost or broke something that belonged to someone else.
●If you did something you knew was wrong-like telling a tie or breaking a rule on purpose.
●If you didn’t do something you should do-like keeping a promise.
When someone apologizes to you, you may welcome it and be ready to forgive (原谅) and moved on. Or you might not feel like being friendly right away. You don’t have to be friends just because someone apologizes. It’s polite to accept and acknowledge (承认) the apology, but anything more is up to you!
