About 30 years ago, two art thieves dressed as police officers made their way into the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston and stole multiple artworks, including a Vermeer painting that was one of only 36 by the artist. With an estimated value of over $200 million, “The Concert” remains one of the most expensive missing items on the FBI's list of stolen art. With the rest of Vermeer's masterpieces spread across 17 collections in seven countries, people have never had the opportunity to see all of Vermeer's works in one place. And since some of his works are now too fragile to travel, they'll have to remain where they are forever.
But now, you can experience all of Vermeer's known artworks in one place for the first time. They're available in Pocket Gallery, a brand new function on the Google Arts & Culture app. You can pull out your phone and step into a virtual exhibition space to see all of his 36 works — including the missing masterpiece and the famous “Girl with a Pearl Earring.”
The Art Camera was set up in several galleries around the world, creating the highest-ever resolution (分辨率) pictures of eight of Vermeer's masterpieces. You can also dive into “in painting tours” and explore expert opinions that shed light on Vermeer's art or mysterious life — you can hear from Tracy Chevalier, author of the bestseller “Girl with a Pearl Earring” and read essays on the artist's life and art.
Visit g.co/meetvermeer, join the conversation with MeetVermeer or download the app on either iOS or Android to try out Pocket Gallery.

Following efforts to limit plastic bags, the push by environmentalists against straws (吸管), has gained attention in recent months, partly because they're seen as unnecessary for most. Companies including Starbucks and Disney are promising to get rid of plastic straws which can be difficult to recycle because of their size and often end up as trash in the ocean. A handful of U.S. cities recently passed or are considering bans. And the push may bring attention to other items people may not have considered — like festive balloons.
“The issue of balloons has really broadened the marine debris (海洋垃圾) issue,” says Emma Tonge of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. “People might not realize balloons are a danger”, she says, “because of their ‘light’ image”. Balloons are not among the top 10 kinds of debris found in coastal cleanups, but Tonge says they're common and especially dangerous to marine animals.
Already, a few states restrict balloon releases to some extent, according to the Balloon Council, which represents the industry and advocates for the responsible handling of its products. That means never releasing them into the air, and ensuring the strings have a weight tied to them so the balloons don't accidentally float away. Lorna O'Hara, executive director of the Balloon Council, agrees that marine creatures might mistake balloons for jellyfish and eat them. But she says that doesn't mean balloons are necessarily causing their deaths.
Some states such as California ban balloon releases for other reasons. Pacific Gas & Electric, which serves northern and central California, says metallic balloons often get caught in power lines and have caused 203 power cuts in the first five months of this year, up 22 percent from a year ago.
【1】Why does the author mention plastic bags and straws in Paragraph 1?
A.To investigate the cause of plastic pollution.
B.To bring up the topic of balloon pollution.
C.To call on people to use less plastic products.
D.To make a comparison between balloons and straws.
【2】What does Emma Tonge say about balloons?
A.They are a threat to land animals.
B.They are too light-colored to be noticed.
C.They can be a cause of coastal pollution.
D.They rank among the top 10 kinds of marine debris.
【3】Which of the following might Lorna O'Hara agree with?
A.Balloons do little harm to fishes.
B.Balloons should be made stronger.
C.The sale of balloons should be banned.
D.It is irresponsible to release balloons into the air.
【4】Why does California ban balloon releases?
A.Balloons waste electric power.
B.Balloons contribute to air pollution.
C.Balloons affect people's normal lives.
D.Balloons do more harm than plastic bags.

Vaping can be just as damaging to your health as smoking. But the minute you kick the habit, you’ll feel a difference.
Vaping is the use of electronic cigarettes — e-cigarettes. Vaping became mainstream in the United States in the late 2000s. When e-cigarettes first hit the market, people believed they were a safer choice to tobacco cigarettes. We now know, however, that vaping, like smoking cigarettes can be quite damaging to your health and equally addictive.
Kids and teenagers are especially attracted to vaping, thanks to attractive flavors. Vape use in high school students rose by 900 percent between 2011 and 2015. Quitting vaping can be difficult, just like trying to stop smoking. There are some immediate, though often temporary, negative effects. The positive ones soon outpace the negative, however.
In as little as 20 minutes, your heart rate returns to normal, your blood pressure drops, and your circulation starts to normalize. Your breathing may improve, too. Daily e-cigarette doubles a persons risk for a heart attack. If you quit, however, the risk begins to fall very quickly. Also, vaping, like cigarette smoking, can blunt your senses, reducing your ability to smell and taste. After just 48 hours without vaping, you may begin to notice your ability to taste and smell food has improved. Nicotine affects more than your brain: new research suggests nicotine can raise your blood sugar, too.
Smokers often have a troublesome cough or make a breathless sound when they breathe that many refer to as a smokers cough. Smoking even e-cigarettes can badly harm your lung health and make fighting off infections difficult. Quitting, however, will help your lungs recover. After one month, your lung capacity improves. There will come a day when the bad habit of vaping won’t have any lasting influence on your body and your health.
【1】What did Americans think of e-cigarettes?
A.They were cheaper. B.They were less harmful.
C.They were more fashionable. D.They were environment-friendly.
【2】What makes vaping popular among kids and teenagers?
A.Its colour. B.Its price. C.Its shape. D.Its taste.
【3】What does the underlined word “blunt” in paragraph 4 mean?
A.dull. B.sharp. C.improve. D.benefit.
【4】What does the author intend to do by writing the text?
A.Introduce the wide use of e-cigarettes. B.Point out how e-cigarettes harm the old.
C.Encourage people to refuse e-cigarettes. D.Compare e-cigarettes with traditional ones.

Too much stuff
Do you have too many pairs of shoes or old gadgets (小玩意) lying around your home? I’m sure many of us have too much stuff that we don’t really use but takes up lots of space. 【1】 However, deciding which items to get rid of can be tricky especially if you believe that physical possessions are the most important thing in life. Also, some people are sentimental (伤感的) about letting go of their personal property. But if you haven’t got room in your house to move, it’s time to decide what your prized possessions are and what is just junk. 【2】. You could also make some money by using websites where people are willing to pay for second-hand goods.
【3】. Bea Johnson, author of Zero Waste Home, has tried to simplify her life. She says, “We’ve asked really tough questions, and evaluated every single thing that we have. There is nothing that we overlooked. I even came to look at my vegetable peeler for example and asked myself, ‘Do I really need that vegetable peeler?’”
Of course, if you’re a shopaholic or a fashion victim it’s hard to stop buying. 【4】. He says, “I’m not anti-stuff — stuff is good. I’m anti too much stuff and I’m anti the wrong stuff. Don’t go out and buy that labelled good that you think is going to make people think something more of you. That’s not going to make you happy.”
This sounds like good advice. It’s good to evaluate what we have and what we really need. 【5】: my CD collection, even though I now download my music, and my childhood teddy bear. What about you? Have you got something that you just can’t throw away?
A.Spring cleaning is a hard job
