From the loss of wildlife to rising sea levels, we’re all well aware of the problems that climate change could cause.
But while it may seem like such issues won’t affect most of us directly, it looks like future generations could grow up without something that many of us now take for granted: chocolate.
According to an essay published by the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, changes to the climate in the regions that produce cacao – the plant from which chocolate is produced – may mean that it will soon become extinct.
Most of the world’s cacao grows in countries close to the equator(赤道), with over half of it growing in the African nations of Ghana and Ivory Coast.
It’s predicted that by 2050, climate change will have accelerated the rate at which temperatures in these countries rise, making it extremely difficult for cacao to grow there.
The problem doesn’t lie in increased heat, however, but in lower humidity (湿度), as it’s believed that rainfall will stay at the same level if the temperature rises.
“In other words, as higher temperatures squeeze more water out of soil and plants, it’s unlikely that rainfall will increase enough to offset the moisture(水分) loss,” Michon Scott, the essay’s author, wrote.
To help fight this problem, researchers from Berkeley University in the US are working on changing the DNA of cacao plants to allow them to survive in dryer conditions by using geneediting technology, according to US News.
In the meantime, US company Mars, one of the world’s biggest manufacturers of chocolate products, announced in January that it would spend $1 billion (6.33 billion yuan) to help reduce the effects of climate change.
“This is a world issue, and it requires everyone to work together,” Mars spokesperson Barry Parkin told Business Insider.
The message here is that if we all do our part, we may be able to prevent some of the worst impacts of climate change. Or if we’re unlucky, chocolate will become a thing of the past.

Rats that eat high levels of a natural sugar known as fructose(果糖) seem to age faster than other rats-and the same could be true for people who eat too much sweet junk food, Israeli researchers said Monday.
Fructose, found naturally in honey and fruit, is used widely in foods ranging from soft drinks to yogurt. But while its sweet taste is popular, the sugar could cause wrinkles, the researchers said. Dr. Moshe Werman and Boaz Levi of the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology fed large amounts of fructose to laboratory rats. Writing in the Journal of Nutrition, they said the fructose-fed rats showed changes in the collagen(胶原蛋白) of their skin and bones. Collagen basically holds the body together. The loss of collagen is what causes loose skin and deep wrinkles in older people.
The process affected, Werman’s team said, is known as cross-linking(交叉相连) . “Too much cross-linking makes the skin stiff, and these are the conditions that encourage wrinkled skin,” Werman said in a statement. He said the same could be true of people, although this has not been shown. “Americans are eating more and more processed foods such as baked goods, canned fruits, jams and dairy products that contain fructose,” Werman said. Other studies have shown that taking in high fructose may cause diabetes(糖尿病).
The rats Werman worked with were fed much more than the average adult person might eat in a day, which is standard in such experiments. The rats were fed 12.5 grams of fructose per kg of weight every day for a year.
【1】In the experiments, if a rat was 0.25 kg , it may have been fed about grams of fructose every day for a year.
A.3 B.4
C.5 D.6
【2】Why do older people have deep wrinkles according to the passage?
A.They don’t drink enough water every day.
B.Collagen in their body is lost.
C.They don’t take enough exercise every day.
D.Their daily foods do not contain enough fructose.
【3】What can we learn from the passage?
A.The fructose-fed rats only showed changes in the collagen of their skin.
B.Too much cross-linking makes the skin soft.
C.The amount of sugar the rats in Werman’s lab ate was larger than an ordinary adult might eat in a day.
D.It hasn’t been shown that taking in high fructose may cause diabetes.
【4】The best title for the passage should be “ ” .
A.Sugar-it could reduce collagen
B.Collagen-it could age you
C.Collagen-it could cause wrinkles
D.Sugar-it could age you

Secret codes (密码) keep messages private. Banks, companies, and government agencies use secret codes in doing business, especially when information is sent by computer.
People have used secret codes for thousands of years. 【1】Code breaking never lags (落后) far behind code making. The science of creating and reading coded messages is called cryptography.
There are three main types of cryptography. 【2】For example, the first letters of "My elephant eats too many eels" spell out the hidden message "Meet me."
【3】You might represent each letter with a number, for example. Let’s number the letters of the alphabet, in order, from 1 to 26. If we substitute a number for each letter, the message "Meet me" would read "13 5 5 20 13 5."
A code uses symbols to replace words, phrases, or sentences. To read the message of a real code, you must have a code book. 【4】For example, "bridge" might stand for "meet" and "out" might stand for
"me." The message "Bridge out" would actually mean "Meet me." 【5】However, it is also hard to keep a code book secret for long. So codes must be changed frequently.
A. It is very hard to break a code without the code book.
B. In any language, some letters are used more than others.
C. Only people who know the keyword can read the message.
D. As long as there have been codes, people have tried to break them.
E. You can hide a message by having the first letters of each word spell it out.
F. With a code book, you might write down words that would stand for other words.
G. Another way to hide a message is to use symbols to stand for specific letters of the alphabet.

Years ago, all my parents were involved in a serious car accidents. Uncle Bob took on the role as a father to him. I lived with him during that period. He allowed me stay with him though his home was not really bigger. He showed his care and love for me by pay attention to my health, education and what I needed at that time. I really appreciated the time he spent with me. We used to go on the trips together. We would just spend days either playing our guitars and reading our favorite car magazines. I always felt gratefully towards him. He was like a father figure who will always give me encouragement.
