Mark Bertram lost the tips of two fingers at work in 2018 when his hand became trapped in a fan belt. “It’s life-changing but it’s not life-ending,” he says. “Doing work is harder now. Everything is just a little different.”
After two surgeries and occupational treatment, Bertram decided to make light of his condition by asking Eric Catalano, a tattoo artist, to create fingernail tattoos. The idea made staff in the studio laugh—until they saw the final result. “The mood changed,”Catalno recalls from his Eternal Ink Tattoo Studio in Hecker, Illinois. “Everything turned from funny to ‘wow’.”
When Catalano posted a photo of the tattoos, a pair of fingernails looked so real that no one could believe their eyes. He had no idea the image would eventually be viewed by millions of people around the world.
The photo pushed Catalano, 40, further into the world of paramedical tattooing. Now people with life-altering scars come from as far away as Ireland to visit his shop. They enter Eternal Ink looking for the artistic healing they saw online. Using flesh-colored inks and a needle, Catalano transforms his clients' view of themselves.
Leslie Pollan, 32, in Oxford, Mississippi, was bitten on the face by a young dog in 2014. She experienced countless surgeries to correct a scar on her lip. “Plastic surgery gave me no hope.” she says. “So I looked for other options.” She finally traveled six hours for a meeting with Catalano. He hid Pollan's lip scar, giving her back a piece of her confidence. “You don’t understand until you've been through it,” Pollan says. “it made me have a different attitude to life.
Catalano performs up to eight reconstructive tattoos each “Wellness Wednesday”. “Every time I see that emotion from my customers, I’m sure this is something that I can’t stop doing.” Catalano says.

News that the biggest mammal is returning in numbers to Antarctica signals(标志)a protection victory. In reality, such victories of the hunted over the hunter were a fantasy in the cruel world of industrial whaling.
The blue whale had almost died out from the Southern Ocean by the time a ban (禁令) on hunting it was introduced in 1967. Sightings of the largest mammal ever to live on the Earth had been extremely rare in the region since then. Not any more. A survey of coastal waters around the island of South Georgia in the sub-Antarctic, has obtained remarkable, uplifting results. In just over three weeks, in the krill-rich(富含南极磷虾的)waters of what was once their main feeding ground, the movements of 55 Antarctic blues were recorded by the British Antarctic Survey. The finding was described as, “truly, truly amazing” by one cetacean specialist.
The blue whale belongs lo the category of those animals which stir up the public emotions and help drive environmental campaigns. Three years ago, the Natural History Museum fixed a 25m skeleton (骨架)of a blue and named it Hope, intending to stimulate humans to better coexist with nature.
The more general comeback of the whale can be an inspiration for victories yet to be won. It could also act as an added power to take measures immediately on the climate emergency. Warming oceans, which destroy food chains are becoming a deadly threat. Ecological wrongs can be righted with enough will and organization.
Of the 55 blue whales identified, some were seen but others were only heard through recorded audio. Awareness of ecological wrongs is not enough. We must make sure the Antarctic blue is hack to stay.

【3】Why was the skeleton of a blue named Hope?
A.To help specialist support the campaign.
B.To study the immediate effect on blue whales.
C.To stimulate humans to make full use of nature.
D.To inspire humanity to live harmoniously with nature.
【4】What is the author's opinion on protecting blue whales?

B.Men has achieved a complete success.
C.Warming oceans can hardly cause any threat.
D.The protection won't attract the public attention.

I was on the phone with a friend the other day, and she was sharing how she was overwhelmed (难以忍受的).She had too much going on — too many to-dos at work and at home, too many projects calling for her attention and too many employee issues that required her input. She felt unable to focus on anything long enough to bring it to an end.
As we talked it through, I was reminded of my computer when it freezes because it has so many windows open. Sometimes, I'm working on too many things, and my computer stops, as if paralyzed (瘫痪的),as if overwhelmed.
If our computer freezes when we’re handling too many tasks at once, then it’s no surprise that we would too. There’s too much data flowing around, too many ideas circulating, too many problems waiting to be solved. Too many windows open.
We need to learn to close some windows, to acknowledge that we can’t focus on everything at once, and that we'd be more effective if we focused on one thing at a time. We need the faith that we can step away from the projects we closed out right now.
Sometimes it feels like we have no choice, that everything is a crisis at this moment and nothing can be dropped, or even postponed. But there is usually something that can be put off or someone who can step in and take away some of our burden. We can manage expectations. We can choose. We can be more realistic about what we can get done, by when and how well.
We don't expect our electronics to run as well when too many windows arc open. Why should we expect that of ourselves? We need to close a few windows to overlook a few projects and to perhaps even power down for a few minutes so that we’re fresh and able to effectively handle all that comes our way.
【1】How does the author introduce the topic?
A.Raising questions. B.Relating an experience.
C.Offering a report. D.Giving a definition.
【2】What can be inferred from the text?
A.We can concentrate on everything at a time.
B.We can drop or postpone nothing in our life.
C.We can turn to someone to get rid of our burden.
D.We can power down and leave all things unsolved.
【3】What does the underlined word refer to in the last paragraph?
A.Running electronics well. B.Leaving many computers open.
C.Managing many things at a time. D.Handling the computer effectively.
【4】What’s the passage mainly about?
A.Why we are overwhelmed.
B.What we expect to manage.
C.How to run a frozen computer well.
D.How to handle overwhelming tasks properly.

Running is free, requiring no equipment and the scenery can be absolutely beautiful.【1】The number of recreational runners in Australia has doubled from 2006 to 2014. Now more than 1.35 million Australians run for fun and exercise.

The recent research published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine was based on data acquired by 14 earlier studies that studied the habits and longevity of six groups.【3】Running was associated with a 23 percent lower chance of death from cancer and a 27 percent less likely to die of any cause. Running just once a week, or for 50 minutes a week, reduces the risk of death at a given point in time.
However, research found no evidence that benefits increase with greater amounts of running.【4】Running is an ideal activity for them. But it shouldn't discourage those who enjoy running longer and more often. Even lasting running, for example every day or four hours a week, is beneficial to health.
Nor do the benefits necessarily increase by running at high speeds.【5】So running at your own “most comfortable pace” is the best for your health.

I am always careful in my daily life. However, once in a hurry, I sometimes make careless mistakes. Although a worrying incident occurred to me this morning, I found my heart full of warmth.
I stayed up late last night, for I had to finish a plan for a project and handed it over to my boss the next morning. I got up later than usual, tired and hungry. Thinking of the possibility that I would be scolded by my boss, I drove as fast as I could along the road without breakfast. About 10 minutes later, my stomach began to growl so I stopped to get a hot chocolate at a convenience store. I didn't have the correct credit card on me and went back to my car to get it. When done, I locked my car door in the old-fashioned way, using the manual lock. You know where this is going, yep, there were my car key and cell phone inside the car!
I went inside the store and they let me use their phone to place some calls. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to get in touch with anyone who could help. I dare say, at that moment nobody would understand better than me what the saying meant, “if you are not inside a house, you don't know about its leaking”. I could do nothing but stay in the store hopelessly. Looking around anxiously. I found a note on the wall saying, “Sign up for a roadside assistance program.”
Suddenly my eyes lit up. “Maybe someone can offer me help now.” I thought to myself. I went over to the assistant quickly and asked her to help dial the number on the note. After what seemed like forever—but in real time it was less than an hour, I started to pray for help. Also, I called my boss and told him what was the matter with me. I started to regret that I could have got up earlier this morning and I needn't have got off my car to get my breakfast. “Can’t you be more careful? Mary!” I laughed at myself.
