Today almost everyone knows computers and the Internet. If I ask you “What is the most important in your life?” Maybe you will say “Computers and the Internet.”
The first computer was made in 1946. It was very big but it worked slowly. Today computers are getting smaller and smaller. But they work faster and faster. What can computers do? A writer has said, “People can’t live without computers today.”
The Internet came a little later than computers. It is about twenty-five years later than computers. But now it can be found almost everywhere. We can use it to read books, write letters, do shopping, play games or make friends.
Many students like the Internet very much. They often go into the Internet as soon as they are free. They make friends on the Internet and maybe they have never seen these friends. They don’t know their real names, ages, and even sex. They are so interested in making the “unreal friends” that they can’t put their heart into study. Many of them can’t catch up with others on many subjects because of that.
We can use computers and the Internet to learn more about the world. But at the same time, we should remember that not all the things can be done by computers and the Internet.
【1】When the computer was invented, it was_____.
A.large and worked quickly B.small and worked slowly
C.large but worked slowly D.small but worked quickly
【2】The Internet was born about in _____.

【3】Which of the following is TRUE?

A.studying B.shopping C.thinking D.playing
【5】The underlined part in Para. 4 can be replaced by “_____”.
A.concentrate on B.reflect on C.recover from D.graduate from
【6】What does the writer think of the Internet?
A.It is wonderful. B.It can make students study harder.
C.It is not good for students. D.It is helpful, but we can’t do everything on it.

Dear Mary,
How are you? I saw you posted some wonderful photos of the coastline near your hometown. You’re really getting into your photography! Right now I’m taking a break to write you an email.
Remember you said you’d like to come over to the UK sometime this year? Well, I was thinking that this year you might like to come to the Edinburgh Festival with me in August. I’ve got an aunt with a flat in the city center who could put us up.
Do you know much about the festival? It’s very famous — the biggest, most popular arts festival in the world! There are lots of things going on — art exhibitions, concerts of all kinds, modern dance, a book festival, etc. The thing it’s most famous for is the newest and most exciting theatre. People come from all over the world and perform in their own languages.
In Scotland you have the best of both worlds: culture and wild land. After the festival, we could hire a car and go up to some of the islands off the west coast, like Skye. The weather can be changeable in August, but the landscape is beautiful, with empty beaches and rocky mountains. It’s the perfect place for you to take photos. Afterwards, we could head back to the east coast and visit my friend Rob in St. Andrews. It’s really pretty and Rob’s enjoyable to be with. You’d get on well with him.
So, why don’t you have a think about it and then get back to me? Take your time, there’s no rush.
Speak to you soon.
Yours,
Sophie

Last year I had a wonderful experience. I went on a student exchange program to Japan. It was an exciting time of my life and I learned many things about the school system in Japan. I was in Grade 11, which is second year of high school in Japan, but I was younger than most of my classmates. That’s because Japanese children enter first year of elementary school in April following their sixth birthday. I started school when I was still five years old.
In Japan, children attend elementary school for six years, where they study Japanese, arithmetic, science, social studies, music, crafts, physical education, and home economics (simple cooking and sewing skills). During their three years in middle school, English is added to this list. Most schools have access to computers and the Internet.
The classes in my school seemed rather big to me, around 30 students in a typical high school class. We ate lunch in the classroom, instead of a cafeteria and enjoyed a healthy, nutritious meal prepared by the school or by a local “school lunch center” instead of eating the same, dry sandwiches every day. I really like the Japanese interpretation of school lunches. I also enjoyed the field trips and activities. At Japanese schools, there are many school events during the year, such as field day when students compete in tug-of-war, field trips, and arts and cultural festivals.
【1】Why did the writer go to Japan last year? (no more than 8 words)
【2】Please list at least two subjects Japanese students learn at elementary school.(no more than 5 words)
【3】When do Japanese students start to learn English ? (no more than 8 words)
【4】What is the Japanese interpretation of school lunches in the writer’s eyes?(no more than 15 words)
【5】Which of the two school systems in the passage do you prefer? Please explain why. (no more than 20 words)
