Coffee is a necessary part of Italian culture and since arriving here over six months ago, I have definitely drunk a lot of it! Of course, coffee is also very popular in the UK, but coffee culture in Italy is a completely different story. In Italy, when you order a coffee in a cafe or a bar, you are presented with a tiny, bitter espresso(蒸馏咖啡). This is “normal coffee” for Italians and they are not so interested in the huge coffees that we drink in the UK. In addition, while takeaway coffee is extremely popular among Englishmen, it is not very common at all in Italy, especially in nontouristy areas. Generally, Italians prefer to drink their tiny coffees while standing at the bar and, for many, this short break is an important part of their day. Typically, breakfast at a bar in Italy includes a coffee and a pastry(油酥糕点). I have been spoiled for choice with lovely cafes in the Italian town I'm living in. These cafes sell a series of mouthwatering pastries—either plain or filled with cream, chocolate, jam or Nutella—as well as delicious coffee. Cappuccinos are very popular at breakfast time and, for me, a creamy cappuccino and a pastry is the perfect way to start the day. I think it's a nice way to head to bar to buy a coffee and a pastry for breakfast before working and it's relaxing to take more time to enjoy such breakfast at the weekend. Finally, I have found that coffee in Italy is so much cheaper than coffee in the UK. Apollo, a 5monthold pit bull puppy(比特犬), is getting extra hugs today, after saving his owner's girlfriend from a terrible attack. According to the New York Post, 18yearold Maya Fairweather was visiting her boyfriend, Carlos Guzman, at his apartment in the Red Hook neighborhood in Brooklyn New York, on Monday night. Around 10 pm, the teen decided to take Guzman's puppy, Apollo, for a walk. Once she reached a nearby Park, Fairweather let the pit bull off his rope so he could run around on the grass. Meanwhile, she kept a close watch on him, listening to music through her headphones. “I felt someone pulling my headphones,” she told the New York Post. “I thought it was my boyfriend joking me, so I turned around and smiled—but it wasn't my boyfriend.” Instead it was an unfamiliar man, who started attacking Fairweather, pushed her to the ground and tried to control her arms. After struggling with the attacker for a few moments, the girl was saved by her protective puppy. Apollo raced to the scene and bit the attacker's leg. The puppy bit down so hard that the stranger was forced to take his attention off Fairweather to try to shake the dog off. The girl used the moment of distraction(分散注意力)to run across the street and escape. Finally, Apollo set the attacker free, who ran away. “He was protective,” Fairweather said about the dog's heroic deed. “I think it would have been a lot worse. I wouldn't have been so lucky.” After that, Fairweather, who was not harmed during the attack, returned to Guzman's apartment with Apollo. Guzman's sister took Fairweather to a local police station to report the attack. The police are now searching for the man. Many people believe eating healthily is expensive—and more costly than buying junk foods. But our new research, published in the BMC Pubic Health, shows this isn't the truth. Most of the Australian family food budget(预算)is being spent on junk foods and drinks that are high in fat, sugar and salt. Less than 7% of Australians eat healthily. The Australian adults get at least 35% of their energy from junk foods and drinks. As a result, two-thirds of adults (63%) and one-quarter of children are overweight. We used the Australian Health Survey 2011—2013 and the suggestions of the Australian Dietary Guidelines to model healthy diets for a family of two adults and two children every two weeks. We collected food prices in supermarkets and stores in high and low-socioeconomic(社会经济地位低的)areas in Brisbane, and compared the diet prices with family incomes. In both areas, a family of two adults and two children spend about 18% more on present diets than would be required to buy healthy diets. About 58% of the food budget for present diets is spent on junk foods, including takeaway foods(14%), and sugary drinks(4%)． In the low-socioeconomic area, a family of two adults and two children spend $640. 20 every two weeks on their present diets, but could buy a healthy diet for $560. 93 every two weeks. In the high-socioeconomic area, these numbers are $661. 92 and $580. 01. Supermarket food prices were about 3% higher in the high-socioeconomic location.
