As I walked with my tour group along the city wall, we approached the open gate slowly Peering through the gate we saw in the distance one of the most iconic buildings of Italy: the Leaning Tower. Finally, we were in Pisa.
The first interesting piece of information our tour guide told us was that the Leaning Tower was simply a bell tower. For such a world-famous building to have such a common function was quite surprising. Yet the building does have one remarkable claim to fame: it is where Galileo performed his experiments about falling bodies.
Our next stop was the Cathedral. It looked almost Middle Eastern in its outward appearance. Inside it was unlike any other cathedral I’d ever seen. After we walked around and explored every corner of the building, our guide pointed out one of the most impressive parts of it — the ceiling. A series of carved wooden squares overlain with gold made the ceiling a spectacular accent to an already amazing structure.
After a quick bite in a cafe, we headed back towards the buses and returned to Florence where the choir students whom I was traveling with had an evening performance in a local church. The church was filled and the performance went off without a hitch, making for a nice end to an overall pleasant day in Italy.
【1】What surprised the author about the Leaning Tower?
A.It was a famous building. B.It was located in Pisa.
C.It was used as a bell tower. D.It was where Galileo worked.

C.It ended in success. D.It started behind schedule.
【4】Where is the passage from?
A.A diary. B.A brochure. C.A report. D.A novel.

Being physically fit at age 18 is linked to a higher IQ, a new study finds. The researchers also show that fitness predicts greater educational and professional achievements later in life. Earlier studies have found links between physical fitness and intelligence(智力)in animals, children and older adults. But the relationship in young adults hasn’t been clear.
In the new study, researchers used data(数据)to examine over 1.2 million young men born in Sweden between 1950 and 1976. All the men had their physical fitness and intelligence assessed(评估) at age 18. The researchers compared this information to details of later achievements in academic(学术), social and economic aspects from other national databases and made some findings.
Fitness in the 18-year-olds was strongly linked to scores on intelligence tests. “Being fit means that you have good heart and lung capacity and that your brain gets plenty of oxygen, ’’ says Dr. Michael Nilsson of the University of Gothenburg. “This may be one of the reasons why we can see a clear link with fitness.” The researchers also found that fit teens were more likely to get a university degree later in life. Fitness at age 18 was also linked to landing better jobs, with Higher pay or management responsibilities.
The findings point to the importance of encouraging physical fitness in teens. “If so, physical education is a subject that has an important place in schools,” says Dr. Maria Aberg of the University of Gothernburg.

When I was four years old, my master started training me hoping I could be a good horse. There was so much for me to learn. I learned to trot and gallop steadily. I was taken to another farm next to the railway to get used to the thundering sound. My master never whipped me because I was always learning hard and well. Soon Mr. Gorderu my new master, came and took me to his house.
One autumn day, Mr. Gorden had to go to a distant town on business. On the way there was a lot of rain with a strong wind. When we came to the river, the water was so high that it nearly reached the wooden bridge. In one low part of the road the water was half-way up to my knees.
After Mr. Gorden finished his business, it was late in the afternoon. The wind was much stronger. As we went through the wood, I heard him say, “I wish we were out of this wood.” Indeed, I thought so, but just then there was a great noise of wood breaking, and a big tree came crashing down through the other smaller trees and fell across the road right in front of us! It was frightening and I stopped immediately.
We had no choice but to go back to the crossroads and take the longer road round to the wooden bridge. It was nearly dark now. We could see water over the middle of the bridge. The moment my feet touched the first part of the bridge, I was sure something was wrong, and I stopped suddenly.
