My mother had guest soaps in the bathroom. In a home with very few luxuries (奢侈品), those tiny roses of grape purple and lemon yellow represented something special to her; they were something she wanted to keep nice for our guests. So she kept them in a covered glass container, where they would be safe from the many sets of little fingers in our household that needed washing. Those soaps decorated the shelf in the bathroom for as long as I can remember. There they stayed, displayed until dust caked in the container, and the roses lost their beauty. But they were never used.
Fast forward to my adult life. When we were visiting my in-laws, it was casually given. No big deal; everyone got one. It was just a bar of soap, wrapped in beautiful paper with a lovely label showing that this soap had been made not by machine but somebody who just happened to be my new brother-in-law. That soap was only a few dollars, but I carried the weight of it for years. It was guest soap.
It was too pretty to use. It was proudly set out to be looked at, but not used, for about a week. My practical husband did not see the point of it cluttеrіng up (胡乱填满) thе countertop. An empty childhood bedroom where there was a glassed-in display shelf was the new home for the soap.
I loved this room. Bright and sunny, it was filled with furnishings and things I loved. When I got sick, it became my recovery room. I could rest there surrounded by happy memories. As I got better, I took inventory (盘点) of my life, and of my surroundings. And, I saw the soap.
I saw something that was meant to be used, not admired. I took that carefully wrapped soap off the shelf and opened it with a sense of childish delight. Then I ran it under water. As I concentrated on the bubbles (气泡) building between my hands, I felt all my troubles washing away with those tiny bubbles. It became a moment of pure joy.
So, from now on, I will use the guest soap. And while I’m at it, I might as well use the good towels too.

While the Internet has met the needs of sight and sound, it has not reached touch, taste, and smell yet.
Several groups are trying to break those barriers. Immersion is developing a system called “TouchSense”. With the plug-in they provide for free at their site and the correct type of mouse, one can actually “feel” the sensation of different things online.
The sense of smell is not far down the line either. Another company, DigiScents is developing technology that will allow folks to literally download smells. The sense of smell plays an important role in further involving the user in the virtual world.
But what does this all mean to society? Will people be so won over by the technology and the experiences there that they will forget about the “read world”?
There are several books, games and TV series based on the idea of “cyberaddiction”. For example, a popular science fiction book, Neuromancer by William Gibson, goes to great lengths to describe the addiction of living in a VR (Virtual Reality) world. A movie, Strange Days, has a person dealing in recorded emotions and experiences to sell to a VR addicted market.
But can those things really happen? I believe so. I believe if we don’t watch ourselves we will fall into that state of addiction where VR becomes “Better-Than-Life”. The world around us is filled with so many painful things that the Internet and the temptation (诱惑) to escape through VR are quite strong.
Over the last couple of years as I’ve run various games online, I’ve seen more and more people join in and participate. People are more accepting of “playing” in these virtual worlds.
The world is different now and the Internet, all it has to offer and all it will offer in the future, will increasingly become our lifelines. If we’re not careful, fiction will become reality. The addiction is already there.
【1】What can we know about DigiScents’ technology?
A.It will encourage people to focus on themselves.
B.It will drag more and more people into cyberaddiction.
C.It will allow people to experience different senses together.
D.It will make more and more people interested in technology.
【2】What do the works in Paragraph 5 have in common?
A.They are set in imaginary computer-based societies.
B.They are about people using VR for marketing.
C.They are famous for their well-made plots.
D.They are popular with young people.
【3】What might be the author’s attitude to the new cyber technologies?
A.Curious. B.Doubtful.
C.Cautious. D.Appreciative.
【4】What’s the best title for the text?
A.The effect of virtual reality B.How will we treat VR addiction
C.How to survive in the virtual world D.Reach out and touch someone online

The world’s most popular animals are in more danger than we realize, according to a new study. A survey of the Public’s Knowledge suggests many people are unaware that the animals they consider “inviting” are under threat in the wild. These include lions, elephants, tigers and other animals which frequently appear in branding and advertising.
The idea of “inviting” species has come up recently in Conservation Biology, explains Dr. Franck Courchamp, the study’s lead author. “There is a regular claim that the most ‘inviting’ species are attracting most of the time and resources. I started wondering whether this was true and followed by better results in conservation,” he told BBC News.
Using an online survey available in four languages, researchers asked the public to name the wild species they considered most attracting. They also looked at how frequently animals were represented on zoo websites, and on the covers of Disney and Pixar films. Additionally, the team had volunteers in France catalogue their meeting with virtual (虚拟的) populations of the 10 most “inviting” animals over the period of a week. They saw an average of 4.4 lions in cartoons, magazines and other sources each day, suggesting that people are likely to see two to three times as many “virtual” lions in a year as there are lions in West Africa. “Mostly I think because people see giraffes and lions every day of their life, they unconsciously think they are in abundance,” Dr. Courchamp said.
Despite their abundant media representation, nine of the animals on the list are classed as vulnerable, endangered or critically endangered on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List. When researchers asked survey participants whether they thought these animals were endangered, almost half of the participants thought that critically endangered gorillas (大猩猩) were not under threat.
As for this, Dr. Courchamp proposes a solution. Companies would donate money to Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) in return for using the animals in their branding or advertising. “I think it’s not so unrealistic,” says Dr. Courchamp. “There are already some companies that do that. Jaguar is in partnership with Panthera, an organization protecting wild cat species. Lacoste also made a campaign recently where they replaced their logo with images of endangered species.”
【1】What is the text mainly about?
A.The ten most attracting animals.
B.The importance of saving wild animals.
C.Animals’ images needing more attention.
D.Animals’ attraction harming their conservation.
【2】According to Dr. Courchamp, survey participants’ views are unconsciously affected by _____.
A.the media B.their preferences
C.the IUCN Red List D.other participants’ opinions
【3】How might the researchers feel about survey participants’ answers?
A.Relieved. B.Surprised.
C.Frightened. D.Excited.
【4】What is Dr. Courchamp’s solution?
A.Raising people’s environmental awareness.
B.Asking big companies to organize campaigns.
C.Funding conservation by trading animals’ images.
D.Appealing for cooperation in NGOs for animal protection.

Speech students are often amazed at how easily their teacher can pick out a speaker’s main points. Of course, the teacher knows what to listen for and has had plenty of practice. But the next time you get an opportunity, watch your teacher during a speech. 【1】.When note-taking is done properly, it is a great way to keep rack of a speaker’s ideas.
The key words here are when done properly. 【2】. Some try to write down everything a speaker says. They view note-taking as a race. As the speaker starts to talk, the note-taker starts to write. But soon the speaker is winning the race. Some people go to the opposite extreme. They know they can’t write down everything. 【3】. Every once in a while the speaker rewards them with a joke or a dramatic story. Then the note-taker seizes the pen, writes down a few words, and sits back to await the next exciting point. By the end of the lecture they have little or no record of the speaker’s important ideas.
As these examples show, most inefficient (效率低的) note-takers suffer from one or both of the two problems: 【4】 , and they don’t know how to record what they do listen for. The solution to the first problem is to focus on a speaker’s main points and evidence. But once you know what to listen for, you still need a sound method of note-taking.
Although there are a number of systems, most students find the key-word outline best for listening to classroom lectures and formal speeches.【5】.
Perfecting this system of note-taking requires practice.
A.Notice how brief the notes are
B.They don’t know what to listen for
C.Unfortunately, many people don't take notes effectively
D.Chances are she or he will be listening with pen and paper
E.The speaker pulls so far ahead that the note-taker can never catch up
F.Therefore, they wait for the speaker to say something that catches their attention
G.This method briefly notes a speaker’s main points and supporting evidence in rough outline form
