One Sunday, my family had gathered at my parents’ house to feast upon Mom’s wonderful cooking.During the normal dinner chatter, I noticed that my father was slurring (说话含混) his words. No one mentioned this during dinner, but I felt compelled to discuss it with my mother afterward. We decided that there was something seriously wrong and that Dad needed to see the doctor. Mom phoned me two days later.“The doctor found a brain tumor (肿瘤).It’s too large at this point to operate.Maybe they can do something then, but the odds are long.” Even with the treatment, my father’s condition worsened, and the doctor finally informed us that this condition was terminal(晚期的).During one of his stays in the hospital, we brought our baby daughter Chelsey with us when we visited him.By this time he had great difficulty speaking.I finally figured out that he wanted Chelsey to sit on his stomach so he could make faces at her. Watching the two of them together, I realized I was living an experience that would stay with me forever.Though grateful for the times they could share, I couldn’t shake the feeling of a clock ticking in the background. On the visit to my parents’ home during what we all know was my father’s last days, my mother took Chelsey from my arms and announced, “Your father would like to see you alone for a minute.” I entered the bedroom where my father lay on a rented hospital bed.He appeared even weaker than the day before. “How are you feeling, Dad?” I asked.“Can I do anything for you?” He tried to speak, but he couldn’t make out a word. “I’m sorry, but I can’t understand you,” I said. With great difficulty he said, “I love you.” We don’t learn courage from heroes on the evening news.We learn true courage from watching ordinary people rise above hopeless situations. In many ways my father was a strict, uncommunicative man.He found it difficult to show emotion. The bravest thing I ever saw him do was overcome that barrier to open his heart to his son and family at the end of his life. 41.Which of the following statements is TRUE? A.The writer accompanied his father to a medical examination. B.The writer’s father got worse after the removal of the brain tumor. C.The writer was quick to notice the strange condition of his father. D. The writer’s father had known about his illness before the writer discovered it. 42.What does the underlined sentence “the odds are long” mean? A.There’s little possibility for Father to recover. B. It takes a long time for Father to recover. C.Father needs love and care from his family. D.They need a proper time to operate on Father. 43. How might the writer have felt when he saw his father make faces at Chelsey? A. Disappointed B. Glad C. Surprised D. Bitter 44.The father had never said “I love you” to the writer before because______. A.he was not used to openly showing his emotions B.he was not so attached to the writer C.he thought there was no need to tell the writer D.he believed in strictness and punishment 45.What does the writer attempt to tell us? A.Life is short, so live your life to the fullest. B.Don’t wait to see a doctor till it is too late. C.Bravely express your love for your family. D.We don’t often value health until we lose it.

Tens of thousands of ancient pictures carved into the rocks at one of France’s most important tourist sites are being gradually destroyed. Scientists and researchers fear that the 36,000 drawings on rocks in Mont Bego in the French Alps are being damaged so rapidly that they will not survive for future generations. The mountain, believed to have once been a site for prayer, is scattered (散布) with 4,000-year-old drawings cut into bare rock. They include pictures of cows with horns, cultivated fields (耕地) and various gods and goddesses. But as the popularity of the site increases, the pictures are being ruined by thoughtless graffiti (涂鸦). Jean Clottes is the chairman of the International Committee on Rock Art. He says, “People think that because the pictures have been there so long they will always continue to be there. But if the damage continues at this rate there will be nothing left in 50 years.” He describes seeing tourists stamping on the drawings, wearing away the rock and definition (清晰) of the artwork as they do so. Some visitors, he says, even cut off parts to take home as souvenirs. “When people think they can’t take a good enough photograph, they rub the drawings to get a clearer picture,” he said. “The drawings are polished by the weather, and if the sun is shining and the visitors can’t see them properly they simply rub them to make them look fresher.” Other researchers describe how people arrive carrying long sticks with sharp ends to scratch (刮) their own drawings, or even their names, in the rocks. But experts are divided over the best way to preserve the drawings. Henry de Lumley, director of the Museum of Natural History in Paris, believes that the only way to save the site is to turn the whole mountain into a “no-go” area, preventing the public from going there except on guided tours. Otherwise, he says, not only will the site be completely destroyed but important research work will be reduced. Clottes disagrees, “The measure suggested by Henry de Lumley is the most severe, and while it is the most effective, it is also certain to bring about protests from people who live there,” he said. “The site was classified as a historic monument years ago by the Ministry of Culture, and we must do as much as possible to save what is there.” David Lavergne, the regional architect, also wants to avoid closing the site. “Henry de Lumley’s idea isn’t ideal,” he said. “Our department feels that the best solution is to let people look at the site, but because the area is very big it is difficult to prevent visitors from damaging it. I would prefer that everyone was able to look at it, but the main problem is money. We do not have the funds to employ the necessary number of guards. We may have to consider charging a fee. It doesn’t seem to be possible to get the government support.” In Nice, Annie Echassoux, who also worked on researching the site, is alarmed that as the mountain becomes easier to reach — tourists can now avoid the three-and-a-half-hour walk by hiring vehicles — the damage will increase rapidly. She thinks that the only solution is to rope off the area and provide guides. “You can’t say the plan can’t go ahead because there is no money,” she said. “That is not good enough. Money must be provided because the Ministry of Culture has classified this area as a historic site. If we don’t take steps, we will be responsible for losing the drawings for the next generation.” 50. Jean Clottes says that people who visit the mountain____. A. do not believe the drawings are old. B. believe they are allowed to paint there C. think the drawings should be left alone D. think the drawings will not disappear 51. According to Jean Clottes, some of the visitors to the area have____. A. helped to clean the drawings B. taken bits of the rock home C. been unable to take photographs D. misunderstood what the pictures mean 52. Henry de Lumley is eager to ____. A. set up research projects B. protect public rights C. keep out individual visitors D. ban traffic in the area 53. Which word best describes Annie Echassoux’s attitude towards saving the historic site? A. Supportive. B. Disappointed. C. Worried. D. Hesitant. 54. This passage has been written about Mont Bego to ____. A. advertise the closing of the site B. warn visitors about the dangers of the site C. encourage scientists to visit the site D. describe fears for the future of the site

Martin was returning to work in his London office after spending two weeks with his brother in New York.He was coming back with a heavy heart. It was not just that it was the end of a wonderful holiday; it was not just that he invariably suffered badly from jet lag (时差) ; it was that Monday mornings always began with a team meeting and, over the months, he had grown to hate them. Martin was aware that colleagues approached these meetings with hidden matters; they enjoyed game-playing; and he knew that people were not being honest and open. The meetings themselves were bad enough-there were all the complaints afterwards at the meeting like “I could have improved on that idea, but I wasn't going to say". “They usual people saying the usual things.” “I was thinking of making a suggestion—but I couldn’t be bothered.” As this morning's meeting began, Martin prepared himself for the usual dullness and boredom. But, as the meeting progressed, he became aware of a strange background noise. At first, he thought that he was still hearing the engine noise from the aircraft that had brought him back to London. He had had to sit over the wing and the engine noise was terrible. But, as he concentrated on the noise, it became a little clearer. He realized-to his amazement-that he could actually hear what they were thinking at the same time as they were speaking. As he concentrated still harder, he found that he could actually hear what they were thinking at the same time as they were speaking. What surprised him, even more than the acquisition(获得)of this strange power, was that he discovered that what people were saying was not really what they were thinking. They were not making clear their reservations(保留意见).They were not supporting views which they thought might be unpopular. They were not contributing their new insights. They were not volunteering their new ideas. Martin found it impossible not to respond to his new knowledge. So he started to make gentle interventions(干涉),based more on what he could hear his colleagues thinking than on what he could hear them saying. “So, John are you really saying…” “Susan, do you really think that?” “Tom, have you got an idea on how we could take this forward?” They was aware that his colleagues were unsettled (不安的) by how insightful these interventions were. Encouraged now, Martin forgot his usual discomfort at participating in such meetings and began making comments of his own. However, he became aware that some of his colleagues were looking at him surprisedly. One or two even had a gentle smile playing on their lips. Only gradually did it dawn on him –they could hear his thoughts and he was not really saying what he was thinking. They looked at him, puzzled. In truth, he felt rather proud of his newly-acquired talent. As the meeting progressed, Martin became aware of changes to the tone and style of the event. It was clear to him that each member of the meeting was learning how to hear the thoughts of the others and this was slowly changing how they interacted with one another. The game-playing started to fall away; people started to speak more directly; views became better understood; the atmosphere became more open and trusting. The meeting ended. As people left the room, Martin found that he could still hear what they were thinking."That was the best meeting we've ever had." "All meetings should be like that." "In future, I'm going to say what I think" . 55. It is known from the first paragraph that Martin _____ . A. just came back from his business trip in New York B. was found to suffer from a serious heart disease during the trip C. had a good time during his fortnight's stay in New York D. didn't like his work in his London office 56. Why did Martin hate his company's team meeting? A.It had to be held every Monday morning. B.The meeting was a complete waste of time. C.He couldn’t control the meeting that was out of order. D.The meeting atmosphere wasn’t open and trusting. 57. What do we know about this Monday morning's meeting from the passage? A.Martin realized what he really needed. B.Martin was angry at the dullness of the meeting. C.Martin led people to express their real thoughts. D.Many members played games at the meeting. 58. The underlined part “his newly-acquired talent” in Paragraph 5 means that Martin could _____. A. still hear the engine noise of the plane though he was back. B. hear what the meeting members were thinking based on their words. C. clearly hear what the members of the meeting were saying D. actually control the thoughts of the members of the meeting 59.It is inferred from the last two paragraphs that towards the end of the meeting Martin would hear such words as “ _____”. A. I was thinking of making a suggestion-but I couldn't be bothered B. I have got an idea on how we could take this forward.I think we should… C. The usual people say the usual things, so I have no other new ideas D. I could have improved on that idea, but I wasn't going to say 60. What is probably the best title for the passage? A. A Meeting of Minds B. Lessons in Leadership C. Martin and His Team D. The Value of Meeting
