Watson entered Mr Smith’s office. The boss was a hard man. He fired people who didn’t do well without giving them a second chance. “Watson,” said Mr Smith, “this past year your department (部门)hasn’t earned money. We’re going to drop that department. It’s finished. I’m sorry but you’ll have to go.” “But sir, if I just had a little more time. For the moment I need the job to keep my son at Riverside School.” “What’s that?” said the boss. “Riverside! I didn’t know you had a boy there. That’s an expensive school for a man with your salary.” “I know, sir. But he likes it there so much! He’s a star athlete and the best boxer in the school. The boys call him Champ(冠军) there.” The boss sat perfectly still for a long time—a faraway(恍惚的)look in his eyes. Then, suddenly, he said,“We’ve got to close your department, Watson. But you’ll take over a new job in another department. It means longer hours may be more pay. Now get out. You’re here for life.” Watson got out, with surprise on his face. Then the boss took a letter from the top drawer of his desk. It was Herbie’s last letter from Riverside School—written a few days before he died. He had read it over and over again with sick pain. The letter read: I can’t say the boys here are any nicer to me than the others were. I guess it’s the same everywhere when you’re a cripple(跛脚的人). But don’t worry about me, Dad. They’ve got a good chemistry department here. And there’s one boy here who is really great. He’s a track star and boxing champ and just tops in chemistry. The boys call him Champ. He made them stop throwing my books around. And he knocked a boy down who hit me. He is the best friend I ever had. Dad, when I grow up, I want to do something for Champ. America is a mobile society. Friendships between Americans can be close and real, yet disappear soon if situations change. This can be quite difficult for us Chinese to understand, because friendships between us flower more slowly but then may become lifelong feelings, extending (延伸) sometimes deeply into both families. Americans are ready to receive us foreigners at their homes, share their holidays, and their home life. They will enjoy welcoming us and be pleased if we accept their hospitality (好客) easily. Another difficult point for us Chinese to understand Americans is that although they include us warmly in their personal everyday lives, they don’t show their politeness to us if it requires a great deal of time. This is usually the opposite of the practice in our country where we may be generous with our time. Sometimes, we, as hosts, will appear at airports even in the middle of the night to meet a friend. We may take days off to act as guides to our foreign friends. The Americans, however, express their welcome usually at homes, but truly can not manage the time to do a great deal with a visitor outside their daily routine. They will probably expect us to get ourselves from the airport to our own hotel by bus. And they expect that we will phone them from there. Once we arrive at their homes, the welcome will be full, warm and real. We will find ourselves treated hospitably. For the Americans, it is often considered more friendly to invite a friend to their homes than to go to restaurants, except for purely business matters. So accept their hospitality at home! 29.The writer of this passage must be ______. A.an American B.a Chinese C.a professor D.a student 30.When we arrive in America to visit an American friend, we will probably be ______. A.warmly welcomed at the airport B.offered a ride to his home C.treated hospitably at his home D.treated to dinner in a restaurant 31.The underlined words “generous with our time” in Paragraph 3 probably mean ______. A.strict with time B.serious with time C.careful with time D.willing to spend time 32.A suitable title for this passage would probably be “______”. A.Friendships between Chinese B.Friendships between Americans C.Americans’ hospitality D.Americans’ and Chinese’s views of friendships

One animal which is still alive, but has almost disappeared from the world, is the Chinese river dolphin or baiji. The baiji is a beautiful animal with a graceful body and a long nose. It is blue-grey with a white underside, weighs between 100 and 160 kilogrammes , and can grow up to eight feet long. It lives in the middle and lower parts of the Yangtze River. Most dolphins live in the sea so the baiji is very unusual. It is one of only five kinds of river dolphins in the world. In the past , there were many stories about the baiji. One story said that the dolphin was really a beautiful princess who had drowned in the river .Another said it was a kind of horse that could gallop(急速行进) across water, carrying God on its back. Sadly, the situation today is very different. Many millions of people live in the Yangtze River Basin and the river is busy, noisy and polluted. The baiji is almost blind and moves around using sounds. With so many boats and people using the river, the animals cannot find their way around. They are unable to find food, or find each other. Year by year, the number of baiji in the river becomes smaller and smaller. A lot of work is being done to help the baiji. One section of the river has been made into a kind of nature park, where the bajij can be safe. Fishermen work together with scientists and tell them when they see a bajij, or if they find an injured one. Injured animals are taken to a research center and nursed back to be healthy. However , in spite of these measures , scientists estimate(估计) that the mumber of the bajij still alive in the river may be less than 100. If things continue as they are, the lovely creature will disappear in the next 25 years. 33.Which description about the baiji is WRONG ? A.It has already died out from the world. B.It is blue-grey with a white underside. C.It lives in the middle and lower parts of the Yangtze River. D.It is one of only 5 kinds of river dolphins in the world. 34.The reasons why the baiji is disappearing are the following EXCEPT . A.many millions of people live in the Yangtze River Basin , making there noisy and polluted B.the baiji is blind because of the pollution and can’t find the way around C.the boats and people are noisy , making the animals cannot find their way around by sounds D.they are unable to find food or find each other by sounds since the river is noisy 35.What can we learn from the passage ? A.People like to live in the Yangtze River Basin with animals swimming in the river. B.The animals dying out are being hunted by human beings. C.People can take some measures to save the animals dying out. D.There are more bajij living in a nature park now.

If you have ever been discouraged because of failure, please read on. Often achieving what you plan to do isn’t the important thing. 36 Two brothers decided to dig a deep hole behind their house. While they were working, a few older boys stopped by to watch. “What are you doing?” asked one of the visitors. “We plan to dig a hole all the way through the earth!” one of the brothers volunteered excitedly. The older boys began to laugh, telling the younger ones that digging a hole all the way through the earth was impossible. After a long silence, one of the diggers picked up a jar full of spiders, worms and a wide variety of insects. 37 Then he said quietly and confidently, “Even if we don’t” 38 And that is what a goal is for –to cause us to move in the direction we have chosen, in other words, to have us digging! But not every goal will be fully achieved. Not every job will end successfully. Not every relationship will endure. Not every hope will come to pass. Not every love will last. 39 So when you fail to reach your aim, perhaps you can say, “Yes, but look at what I found along the way! Look at the wonderful things which have come into my life because I tried to do something !” It is in the digging that life is lived. 40 A.And I believe in the end it is joy in the journey that truly matters. B.He opened the jar and showed the wonderful things contained in it to the laughing visitors. C.Here are some reasons for you. D.Not every dream will come true. E.Let me explain. F.Their goal was far too high, but it did cause them to dig. G.He broke the jar into pieces.
