Saturday, March 24th

We have arrived in the hot, wet city of Bangkok. This is our first trip to Thailand(泰国). All the different smells make us want to try the food. We are going to eat something special for dinner tonight. The hotel we are staying in is cheap, and very clean. We plan to stay here for a few days, visit some places in the city, and then travel to Chiang Mai in the North.

 Tuesday, March 27th

Bangkok is wonderful and surprising! The places are interesting. We visited the famous market which was on water, and saw a lot of fruits and vegetables. Everything is so colorful, and we have taken hundreds of photos already! Later today we will leave for Chiang Mai. We will take the train north, stay in Chiang Mai for two days, and then catch a bus to Chiang Rai.

 Friday, March 30th

Our trip to Chiang Rai was long and boring. We visited a small village in the mountains. The village people here love the quiet life--no computers or phones. They are the kindest people I have ever met. They always smile and say “hello”. Kathy and I can only speak a few words of Thai, so smiling is the best way to show our kindness. I feel good here and hope to be able to come back next year.

Music is magic! Music speaks louder than words and it is a “language” that the whole world can understand. A piece of music can produce a response in the heart and mind. Like feeling an electrical current or receiving a personal radio signal, music has a spiritual effect on a person. Different kinds of music influence people in different ways.

I have listened to music all my life. When I was twelve years old, the Beatles came to America and my whole world opened up. Maybe young people today cannot understand the influence of the Beatles when they exploded across America. Their influence changed the way we dressed, looked, acted and spoke even our culture. The Beatles arrived in America from the UK just under three months after the assassination(暗杀)of President John Kennedy, which had put America into a great depression. And the freshness and lively sprit of the Beatles was exactly what the country needed to refresh itself.

Music links the heart of the hearer with that of the composer. This means that it mixes the spirit of the composer with your spirit when you listen to it. And the music can take your spirit out of your body and transport you into another world. Music has a great way of touching people. Music can make you laugh, cry or shout. It’s also a great source of inspiration.

Try this one day and notice what happens: make yourself a cup of tea, sit on your sofa and play one of your favorite songs. Close your eyes, and soon you’ll find yourself creating vivid mental images---matching the music that you are listening to.

24. Music has magical power because it ______.

A. is a kind of language

B. can be played much louder than words

C. receives a personal radio signal

D. can influence a person’s spirit

25. One can learn from the second paragraph that the Beatles___________.

A. appeared at a special time in American politics

B. are not accepted by modern American people

C. were the biggest band in American history

    D. represented the roots of American culture

26. One will do all of the following while listening to music EXCEPT___________.

A. feeling very refreshed                     B. having emotional changes

 C. painting some vivid pictures               D. feeling inspired by the composer

27. It can be inferred from the passage that the author ___________.

A. has been influenced by the Beatles

B. enjoys drinking tea in his spare time

C. admires President John Kennedy very much

D. likes to match his own feeling with that of the composer

Meeting people from another culture can be difficult. From the beginning, people may send the wrong signal. Or they may pay no attention to signals from another person who is trying to develop a relationship.

Different cultures emphasize (强调) the importance of relationship building to a greater or lesser degree. For example, business in some countries is not possible until there is a relationship of trust. Even with people at work, it is necessary to spend a lot of time in “small talk”, usually over a glass of tea, before they do any job. In many European countries -- like the UK or France -- people find it easier to build up a lasting working relationship at restaurants or caf6s rather than at the office.

Talk and silence may also be different in some cultures. I once made a speech in Thailand. I had expected my speech to be a success and start a lively discussion; instead there was an uncomfortable silence. The people present just stared at me and smiled. After getting to know their ways better, I realized that they thought I was talking too much. In my own culture, we express meaning mainly through words, but people there sometimes feel too many words are unnecessary.

Even within Northern Europe, cultural differences can cause serious problems. Certainly, English and German cultures share similar values; however, Germans prefer to get down to business more quickly. We think that they are rude. In fact, this is just because one culture starts discussions and makes decisions more quickly.

People from different parts of the world have different values, and sometimes these values are quite against each other. However, if we can understand them better, a multicultural environment will offer a wonderful chance for us to learn from each other.

28. In some countries, eating together at restaurants may make it easier for people to _______.

A. get to know each other          B. share the same culture

C. keep each other company          D. develop closer relations

29. The author mentions his experience in Thailand to show that _________

A. the English prefer to make long speeches         B. even talk and silence can be culturally different

C. too many words are of no use                  D. people from Thailand are quiet and shy by nature

30. According to the text, how can people from different cultures understand each other better?

A. By recognizing different values.                B. By sharing different ways of life.

C. By accepting different habits.                  D. By speaking each other' s languages.

31. What would be the best title for the text?

A. How to Understand Each Other.                B. Multicultural Environment.

C. How to Build Up a Relationship.                D. Cross-Cultural Differences.

I always figured that comedians were the best kind of people to hang around with as a kid. They tell funny stories, make joke after joke, and happiness seems never to leave them. But time goes on, and we come to see these same people as clowns on the outside, but crying a river in the inside. Comedy from these people comes from a deep pain and sadness in their lives, or out of a deep-seated anger they have at the world around them.

Look at Richard Pryor, need I say more? Richard seemed to have everything. For Superman , he ended up getting more money than Christopher Reeve did. Yet he said while he was in his forties that the last truly happy moment he remembered in his life was when he was jumping around in the dirt while pretending to be a cowboy at the age of 10. This guy set himself on fire, and he played that for laugh while performing live at the Sunset Strip! Comedy was his constant weapon against pain, and he never held anything back.

The movie Funny People understand very well this gloomy field many comedians have to survive in. It stars Adam Sandler as George Simmons, a famous comedian in the movie. Simmons has it all a beautiful mansion overlooking the sea, a swimming pool, great cars, and so on. But in his eyes, we see that he is a sad man who has come to truly look down upon himself for what he has become. All the wealth he has collected only serves to separate him from the rest of the world and it makes him defensive when around total strangers who cannot see him as a normal person. But now , he hears from his doctor that he has a terminal disease and has only months left to live. Simmons reacts to this news as if someone took away his blood in the heart, and it makes him clearly see just how much he hates his life. So now he has to make every minute count. Then come a series of funny stories.

Comedy is just life as it is , isn’t it?

32. What can we infer about “comedians” according to the text?

A. Comedians like to get along with kids.

B. Comedians’ life is full of jokes.

C. Comedians often use their sad experience.

D. Comedians often cry in their daily life.

33. When was the happiest moment for Richard Pryor?

A. When he pretended to be a cowboy in the childhood.

B. When he played the part of Superman Ⅲ.

C. When he got more money than Christopher Reeve.

D. When he performed live at the Sunset Strip.

34. Why was George Simmons unhappy?

A. He had no friends at all.

B. He spent too much on his house.

C. He wasn’t accepted by the outside world.

D. He was hated by all the strangers around.

35. By saying “Comedy is just life as it is, isn’t it?”the author means_____.

A. life like comedy will make you happy

B. comedy comes from the sadness in real life

C. there is no happiness at all in real life

D. life is full of comedy in reality
