It was a bad time for me. I was low emotionally and tired physically. Probably because of this I hadn't shaved for a few days. Also, because I had been doing some repairs at my daughter's house, I was dressed quite scruffily. Boarding the bus to go home, I saw it was almost full so I found a rail(扶手) to lean against.

That's when a young woman, sitting with her child, stood up and offered me her seat."Wow!" I thought. Out loud I said, "Do I look that old and tired7" She replied," You look like you've had a tough day." I thanked her sincerely and stayed standing.

A moment later a man rose from his seat at the back of the bus and made his way towards me, squeezing past several people on the way. Then he told me about his addiction problems, asked my advice, and just chatted about life for a few minutes. Then he went back to his seat. Very random!

Watching him go, I also looked at the bus-load of people between me and his seat. He hadn't chosen to talk to those strangers. He chose to talk to this stranger, for whatever it meant to him and whatever comfort it brought him. Why?

That's when it occurred to me. I must have Looked Like I had been where he was. I probably looked like a man who would understand a difficult life. I was humbled and uplifted at the same time by the realization that even when we are at our lowest, we can still help others-if we look like we might be able to meet them where they live or walk a while in their world.

Back in 2003 an 86-year-old man drove his Buick through a crowded farmers’ market. Nine people were killed. More than fifty-four people were hurt, fourteen with serious injuries. When he finally stopped, the 86-year-old man got out his car and screamed at people to get out of the way. No alcohol or drugs were found in his system. Apparently, he was just old and confused.

This is a frightening accident, and it is not a rare one. There are many examples of elderly drivers driving into swimming pools, houses, storefronts, or worse.

In our teenage years, we all heard driving is not a right; its a privilege. That is still true, and there comes an age when driving is no longer a privilege that can be allowed. After a certain age, eyesight and dementia(痴呆) are very serious concerns. Undoubtedly, these age-related problems affect some older adults’ driving ability. By the time a person is between eighty-five and ninety years old, his or her driving privilege should be examined.

Licensing laws vary greatly from state to state, and it’s time for a national law on the maximum age limit for driving. The motivation for this law is safety. Another option is to start with laws that ban anyone over the age of eighty-five from driving after sundown, because driving conditions are not as safe as daylight hours. Still another option that may allow elderly drivers to continue driving could be new technology like a voice warning system that cautions drivers on busy streets or at traffic lights. Finally, since there are laws against driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs, shouldn’t some prescription drugs also be included? The average age of 85-year-old is undoubtedly taking at least one prescription drug daily.

The thought of an 86-year-old driver with failing eyesight running down the road in a two-ton piece of metal is unsettling to us all. Driving at an advanced age is not only challenging for the elderly drivers, but also it’s dangerous for the rest of us.

29. The first paragraph is written in order to show_________.

A. the harm of driving at an old age        B. the importance of traffic safety

C. traffic accidents are on the rise          D. many elderly drivers are careless

30. The author suggests that there should be new laws against driving __________.

A. over eighty-five                      B. between sunset and dawn

C. with the help of voice warning systems    D. under the influence of prescription drugs

31. The underlined word “unsettling” in the last paragraph is closest in meaning to “_________”.

A. disappointing     B. worrying     C. touching     D. interesting

32. Which of the following would be the best title for the text?

A. How to keep old people safe on the road?

B. Are drivers well protected by licensing laws?

C. Should there be an age limit for elderly drivers?

D. Is driving a right or a privilege for an old person?

He came on stage and bent to the audience before he began his performance. If you have ever been to his concert, you know that getting on stage is no small  41  for him. He was  42  with a serious disease as a child, and so he walks with the aid of two walking-sticks.

The audience sat quietly  43  he made his way across the stage to his chair and began his play. But this time,  44  went wrong. Just as he finished the first few pieces, one of the strings on his violin  45  . We thought that he would have to stop the concert. But he didn’t.  46  , he waited a moment, closed his eyes and then  47  the conductor to begin again.

The orchestra began and he played with such  48  and such power as they had never heard before. Of course, anyone knows that it is  49  to play a harmonious work with just three strings. I know that, and you know that, but that night the violinist  50  to know that.

When he finished, there was a(n) awesome silence in the room. And then people rose and cheered. There was an extraordinary outburst of  51   from every corner of the auditorium. He  52    , and then said in a quiet tone, “You know, sometimes it is the artist’s task to  53   how much music you can   54  make with what you have left.”

This powerful  55   has stayed in my mind ever since I heard it. Perhaps that is the  56   of life — not just for artists but for all of us. He had  57  all his life to make music on a violin of four strings, but  58   , in the middle of a concert, he found himself with only three strings; so he made music with three strings, and the music he made that night was more   59  , and more memorable.

So, perhaps our  60  on the stage of life is to make music, at first with all that we have, and then, when that is no longer possible, to make music with what we have left.

Dear Bob,

I’m writing to apologize for having forgotten to return the “the Beatles” CD to you when I left Canada. I was in such hurry that I packed everything in my luggages without checking carefully. Had I paid more attention then, I wouldn’t have made such stupid a mistake.

Now everything must be done to solve the problem because I understood you cherish the CD enormously. I can either send it to you by express mail or alternative compensate you in a reasonable price. If you do not mind, I may bring it back to you next time when I go to Canada.

Please let me know what solution you prefer at your earliest convenience. Felt extremely guilty, I really hope you will accept my sincere apology.

                                                                  Faithfully yours,
