Dear Mr / Ms,

I would like to suggest that the starting time be changed at our school. Classes at Sebastian Valley Middle School simply start too early in the morning. Getting eight to nine hours of sleep each night is almost impossible when classes begin at 7:30 am. In order to shower, dress, get organized, eat a quick breakfast, and meet the school bus by 6:45, I would have to get up at 5:45.

Early in the morning, students are too sleepy to learn well. Without enough sleep, young people cannot think clearly or enjoy learning. According to a report called “Are Students Getting Enough Sleep?” from Sebastian Valley Times, “Sleepiness disturbs concentration, reduces short-term memory, and causes bad feelings.”

Researchers have learned that teens normally fall asleep and wake up later than adults. Teens who stay up late at night have trouble getting up early in the morning. Studies show that some schools have already adjusted school hours to better match the teen sleep cycle (周期); as a result, students in these schools are learning better on the new schedule.

Some of my classmates argue that starting school an hour later will prevent them from taking part in after-school athletic programs. A solution would be to carry out these programs before school instead of after school. The students who are involved in sports and clubs would continue to arrive at the usual time. The rest of the student body could get a little more sleep and arrive an hour later.

Teens usually have a later sleep cycle, and learn and behave better when rested. So I would like to suggest that we have a meeting to discuss the problem and listen to all the students’ voice.

Thank you for considering this request!

Tom Sullivan, Grade 8

Mary Frye enjoyed writing poetry very much. She wasn’t interested in publishing her poems, and once in a while she passed one on to her friends. “I don’t think I have any great talent,” she said. But many people would disagree. One of her poems, especially, has given hope and comfort (安慰) to people for over 50 years.

When one of her friends lost someone close, Mary Frye wrote a poem, which seemed to spring from her heart, and gave it to the sad woman. That poem was later passed on to others, who, in turn, passed it on until it became an American classic. “If it helps one person through a hard time, I am satisfied,” said Mary, who received no pay for her work. It has been used at countless funerals (葬礼), translated and used in foreign lands.

Here is her original text, which has moved so many for so long:

Do not stand at my grave and weep, / I am not there, I do not sleep. / I am in a thousand winds that blow, / I am the softly falling snow. / I am the gentle showers of rain, / I am the fields of ripening grain. / I am in the morning hush, / I am in the graceful rush. / Of beautiful birds in circling flight, / I am the starshine of the night. / I am in the flowers that bloom (盛开), / I am in a quiet room. / I am in the birds that sing, / I am in each lovely thing. / Do not stand at my grave and cry, / I am not there. I do not die.

How many people are finding strength and comfort from a poem by a woman who always said she had no talent? And what if she had kept her poetry to herself? Don’t be afraid to use the talents you do have; it has been well advised. The woods would be very silent if only the birds with the sweetest songs were heard.

24. According to the text, Mary Frye _____.

A. translated many foreign poems

B. had many of her poems published

C. chose to make a living by writing poems

D. would share her poems with others sometimes

25. Which of the following can best describe Mary Frye?

A. Brave and determined.         B. Modest and talented.

C. Caring and honest.            D. Strict and patient.

26. What does the underlined word “I” in Paragraph 4 refer to?

A. The dead one.                          B. The living one.

C. The sad woman.                   D. Mary Frye.

27. What does the last sentence of the text imply?

A. Birds like to show off their talents in the woods.

B. Few poems can give comfort like Mary Frye’s.

C. We should not be too shy to show our talents.

D. The woods would be very silent without birds.

Michelle was a student at University of California, Los Angeles. She is here to tell us how she feels about the city.

What were the best things about Los Angeles?

One of my favorite things about Los Angeles is the weather. I hate the cold and it never really gets that cold there. Plus, most of the time it’s usually sunny, which is good because I love going to the beach during the summer. There’s so much to do at the beach, but my favorite thing in L.A. was having a picnic on the sand with my friends.

What were the worst things about being there?

I disliked having to drive everywhere to get around because the city is so spread out. Los Angeles has a lot of traffic and sometimes it takes a long time to get somewhere close by just because the streets are so crowded. Also, a lot of people complain about the pollution.

Did you have any problems there?

Just the normal problems of living in any city, like watching out for pickpockets (扒手). Some people think Los Angeles has a lot of crime, but I think it’s as safe as any other city. Also, many people think driving is difficult because there is a lot of traffic and road rage (路怒症), but it just takes a little practice and a lot of patience.

What are the people like in Los Angeles?

There are all types of people in Los Angeles since the city is pretty diverse. For the most part, though, most of the people are friendly, calm and relaxed. Some people say that everyone in Los Angeles is beautiful, but I think that’s just a stereotype (模式化的印象).

Would you go back to Los Angeles?

Certainly. Los Angeles is one of my favorite cities in the world. I love the fact that it has all the nightlife and shopping of a big city, but also has access to beaches, parks, mountains and other places you can’t usually find in large cities. Between the weather and the beaches and all the fun things to do, it’s a great place to be.

28. We can learn from the text that Michelle _____.

A. hates the heavy traffic in Los Angeles           B. dislikes the cold weather in Los Angeles

C. thinks Los Angeles is small and crowded            D. enjoys driving everywhere in Los Angeles

29. What’s Michelle’s impression of the people in Los Angeles?

A. They get angry easily.             B. All sorts of people live there.

C. They are patient and amusing.       D. Everyone is kind and beautiful.

30. How does Michelle find Los Angeles?

A. Safe but noisy.             B. Relaxing but busy.

C. Polluted and dangerous.      D. Diverse and interesting.

31. We learn from the text that _____.

A. Michelle was born in Los Angeles        B. Michelle loved the life in Los Angeles

C. Los Angeles has many traffic accidents D. Michelle has no plan to return to Los Angeles

Taylor Crowe used to play happily with his toys and recite his alphabet. By age 2, he was starting to learn to make sounds. But something happened in the third year of his childhood. He started losing his language abilities and would have emotional outbursts. Taylor’s parents noticed that he became very shy, and did not make eye contact (接触) when spoken to. He seemed to be in his own secret world.

Today, nearly 1 out of every 110 children born in the U.S. suffers from autism. Taylor Crowe was actually one of these sufferers. Autism is a complex neurological (brain) condition that affects a person’s ability to communicate and socialize. These children often repeat words or actions, and they are extra sensitive to sights, sounds and touch. They may have a sudden period of uncontrolled anger and can be seen beating their hands.

Scientists believe that children with autism have highly developed visual areas in their brain which explains why many of them, including Taylor, are exceptionally good artists. But, unfortunately, this comes at a trade-off — the brain’s ability to communicate, make decisions, plan and complete a task is reduced.

Through immediate treatments and specialized instructions, children with autism are taught behaviors such as keeping eye contact with others, responding when spoken to and becoming aware of themselves. Some children are able to grow up to lead a full and active life. For Taylor, it was years of hard work, but he has shown marked improvement and is well on his way to becoming better. It appears that the earlier parents and caregivers provide special care, the easier these children can get close to normal lives.

Autism is a reminder that each of us is different. Every child with autism is still a child; every person with autism is still a person. The next time you come across a child with autism, try reaching out and connecting with the child inside.

32. At the age of three, Taylor Crowe _____.

   A. was unable to see things clearly      B. would become angry very easily

  C. started to learn to read the alphabet   D. lost his language abilities completely

33. It seems that autism _____.

A. helps sufferers achieve in other fields   B. spreads rapidly across the U.S.

C. is caused by uncontrolled anger        D. cannot be cured now

34. In the last paragraph, the author tries to _____.

A. explain what causes autism

B. ask us to respect and accept those with autism

C. tell us how to prevent autism

D. make us realize the importance of being healthy

35. What would be the best title for the text?

A. A brief history of autism        B. Autism and brain development

C. Children with autism in the U.S.  D. Taylor Crowe: a life with autism
