The most popular martial arts (武术)today came from Asia, especially China. Some Chinese fighting styles were invented more than 3, 000 years ago. Many martial arts were invented because people needed to defend themselves or protect others. Nowadays, people learn martial arts as a way of keeping fit or as a competitive sport, but they are still very useful for selfdefence (防卫).

Martial arts are often referred to as either soft or hard. These terms imply a way of dealing with your opponent's (对手的)force. Soft martial arts, such as tai chi, teach you to use your opponent's own force to defend yourself. Soft styles use movements and timing to avoid, deflect and redirect their opponent's attacks (攻击). These martial arts are soft for the defender but not for the attacker! On the other hand, hard styles, such as kung fu, teach you to defend yourself using force. Techniques involve blocking, posturing and powerful punching and kicking. Hard martial arts techniques are more effective(有效的)if you are more skillful, more powerful and faster than your opponent.

Perhaps one of the best known Japanese martial arts today is karate. But did you know that it came from Fujian Province? in the century, a community of Chinese migrants(移民)from Fujian settled (定居)in what was then the kingdom of Okinawa. The Chinese migrants used to gather in a park to .enjoy cultural activities — one of which was kung fu. This soon caught the attention of local youths, who started learning kung fu from their Chinese neighbours.

In fact, Chinese influence in martial arts was not only kung fu. The very first Korean military (军事)training manual was based on a Chinese version. During the Japanese invasion (侵略)of Korea in the 16th century, the Korean army needed an effective way to train a large number of soldiers. They used a training methodology from a Chinese military manual called ji xiao xin shu, written by the famous Chinese general, Qi Jiguang, who had himself defeated Japanese army.

It's never hard to identify pictures from Instagram: They're usually bright-colored, shot with tasteful lighting, and the people and items are artfully arranged in the frames (画面). Instagram photos seem much similar to each other and to be effortlessly perfect.

Even though it has been here for less than a decade, Instagram — a photo and video-sharing platform started in 2010 in the US — has redefined fashion, travel, food, and even art, because almost everyone wants to make themselves and things look "effortless" and "perfect".

But every trend has its sell-by date, including the so-called "Instagram aesthetic (审美)". Once young people figured out that what appeared to be effortless was actually carefully staged, they lost interest immediately. To them, "trying too hard" is never cool.

This is why a new trend is growing on Instagram - one that wants to be "more authentic", Lexie Carbone from social media marketing firm mentioned. For example, people have been posting "Instagram vs reality" photos to show the real side of themselves. One Instagram user, 22-year-old Reese Blutstein, has attracted over 238,000 followers since she began posting unfiltered photos of herself in strange outfits (装束). "For my generation, people are more willing to be who they are," said Blutstein. "We are trying to show a real person doing cool things as a real person, not trying to create a persona (人设) that isn't actually you."

So perhaps the "Instagram aesthetic" is not coming to an end after all. It's just evolving — into a cooler and more honest version of itself.

  1. (1) What do the underlined words "sell-by date" in Paragraphs probably mean?
    A . end. B . direction. C . stage. D . fashion.
  2. (2) Why is the Reese Blutstein mentioned in the fourth paragraph?
A . To express people now want to be more real on Instagram. B . To explain the meaning of "Instagram vs reality". C . To indicate youngsters have lost interest in Instagram. D . To show people are crazy about taking Instagram photos.
  3. (3) What is the new trend of photos on Instagram?
A . Posting pictures in bright colors. B . Posting pictures of a person's true self C . Posting photos that are artfully arranged. D . Posting photos that remind people of the old days.
  4. (4) What can be a suitable title of this passage?
A . Instagram Aesthetic in Change B . Instagram Lifestyles of Youngsters C . A Popular Sharing Platform D . Reasons for the Popularity of Instagram

You probably take many steps to protect your computer from getting a virus, but what about your cell phone? Cell phones are basically mini-computers, so, believe it or not, they too can get viruses.

"Viruses and malware (恶意软件) should not be a major concern to the average consumer who uses their device to make phone calls, take pictures, and download a few well-known apps from the major app marketplaces," Tim Katsch Vice President of iDropped said. "If a user is downloading a lot of apps, changing and exploring settings within the device, and visiting a large number of websites from unknown sources, virus and malware protection should be kept on their mind." If your phone gets a virus it can mess up your data, put random charges on your bill, and get private information such as your bank account number, credit card information, passwords, and your location.

The most common way that you could get a virus on your phone would be through downloading an infected app. Viruses can also get on your phone when you click on strange links or open up an email that contains a virus. Connecting to an unsecured wireless network in a public place is also a way for hackers (黑客) to get private information from your device.

If you're still convinced that your phone might get a virus, there are anti-virus apps that you can download that will constantly scan your phone to make sure it hasn't developed a virus, Apps like these will also check things before you download them to ensure that they are safe. Another tip is to always look over your cell phone bill every month to make sure there aren't charges from apps that you never downloaded.

Technology is getting smarter, but so are hackers, and it's important to always be cautious with anything you do on your phone. Many people store a lot of personal information on their phones, and while that might make life a little more convenient, it can also do a lot of damage if hacked.

  1. (1) What can we learn from Tim Katsch's words?
A . The wireless network in the public places is safe to use. B . Viruses and malware will most probably attack average phones. C . Downloading a lot of apps will protect your phone from being hacked. D . The average consumer needn't worry much about a virus or malware.
  2. (2) What's the most common way that your phone gets a virus?
A . Downloading an infected app. B . Clicking on close friends' links. C . Connecting to your mobile data. D . Changing your private information.
  3. (3) What does the last paragraph convey?
A . Harm set, harm get. B . Every coin has two sides. C . Kill two birds with one stone. D . Technology makes life smarter.
  4. (4) What may be the best title for the text?
A . Anti-Virus Apps Make Your Cell Phone Safe? B . Viruses and Malware Damage Your Cell Phone? C . Worried About Your Cell Phone Catching a Virus? D . Ready to Fight Against the Hackers to Your Cell Phone?

When my friend Cathy sent me a text saying she didn't think we could be friends anymore, I felt awful. We were close friends who saw each other both in and out of the office.

But as we were a two-person team, after lots of lunch breaks and late nights in the office, I realized our differences complemented (互补) each other. She was the person I could count on for sound advice.

And in the way life often is, when we both left the company, our friendship changed somehow. I noticed the difference, but chalked it up to both of us being too busy. After all, some friendships fade.

So when Cathy called me out suggesting "we were good partners in the office, Mary, but maybe we aren't a good fit outside of it", I was shocked, and then ashamed. Because she was right, I had stopped being a real friend throughout the year.

I had two choices: go with what Cathy suggested or try to save our friendship. So I put my pride in my pocket and apologized.

I started texting every week or so, about conversation topics like book recommendations,   the computer game she was playing, and writing festivals we were thinking of attending. I initiated group outings. She met me halfway by being receptive to my invitations, and finally, we went out for one-on-one dinners.

Real friendships are hard work. You've got to make time to meet, keep in touch with texting, and remember little things like birthdays.

A. A big quarrel broke out between us.

B. I realized that I wasn't ready to see it end.

C. We accepted the fact that the friendship was over.

D. I sent her websites links to events she would find interesting.

E. We went from texting daily to only seeing each other in groups.

F. When we first met in the office, I thought we were quite different.

G. Only in this way can you keep your friendships from fading away.

Recently the students in our class have had heated discussion on whether people should keep pets at home in cities. We have two different opinion.

Some students thought it's a good idea to keep pets because many old people who live alone at home can get some comfort from them. Besides, get along well with animals will make our life interested. But, others are against the idea. In our opinion, if too many people keep pets at home, it will do damage to the environment. What is worse, pets may make too many noise and even attack people.

As for me, I'm in the favor of the former. I don't think it's bad for us to keep pets at home. But we must take some measures to prevent them from serious polluting our environment.
