Where Does the Garbage Go?

When you throw something in the dustbin soon a garbage truck will come to take it away. Then where does it go? That depends on where you live. Different towns deal with rubbish in different ways.

Recycling

A recycling truck picks up paper, cardboard, metal, plastic, and glass. These go to the recycling plant to be sorted and made into new things.

Incinerator

An incinerator is a huge furnace that burns rubbish to make heat and electricity. The ash that's left gets buried in a landfill. Rubbish ash can be harmful, so it has to be stored carefully. But it takes up a lot less room than just plain rubbish.

Compost (堆肥)

Food waste might go to a composter. In a compost heap (堆) , bacteria and worms break down dead plants and old food. They turn it into good, rich soil. Some people keep compost heaps in their gardens. Big commercial composters handle waste from restaurants and farms.

Landfill

Some rubbish gets buried in landfills. A landfill starts as a big hole. Trucks dump rubbish. Big earth movers push it into place and crush it down. They cover the rubbish with dirt to keep scavengers (食腐动物, 拾荒者) away. The bottom of a landfill is lined with a barrier to keep bad things from leaking (渗透) into the ground. Pipes carry away liquid.

Microbes that eat rubbish make methane gas. Landfills have openings to let the gas out so it doesn't explode. Some gain the methane. They use it to fuel garbage trucks or make electricity.

When the landfill is full, it's covered with earth. It might become a park.

It has been two months since I moved to China, but its digital advancement hasn't stopped impressing me ever since. One of the major things that I cannot imagine living without anymore is mobile payment. There are two major mobile payment apps here, Alipay and WeChat Pay. Both have similar payment features, though WeChat has more like a social media. That's why I will focus on this "super app".

So far, I've been shocked by how efficient life can be with WeChat. It is present in every aspect of people's daily life, from paying water and electricity bills, meals, cinema tickets to calling a taxi, following news, and chatting with friends. Most merchants have adopted it, from tiny local street food stalls to high-end (高端的) stores. A cashier may be surprised if you do not pay with WeChat or Alipay at the grocers or in restaurants. And it seems like the entire payment industry has encouraged this shift to mobile payment, equipping payment terminals with QR code scanners to simplify payments. Mobile payments are so common here that I realize that I can perfectly survive if I forget my wallet at home one day because most days I just don't take it out of my bag!

As mentioned earlier, WeChat is also a major social media platform with about one billion daily users, which is more than the entire population of European Union. So I have to say Chinese technological and digital development is a real miracle.

  1. (1) What impresses the author most since he came to China?
A . The rapid progress of digital technology in China. B . The living condition of the Chinese people. C . The similar features of Alipay and WeChat Pay D . The efficient life brought by WeChat.
  2. (2) What can be inferred from the second paragraph?
A . Nowadays wallet is unnecessary in China. B . Cashiers refuse to accept cash in China. C . Mobile payment are very popular in China. D . QR code scanners are very expensive in China.
  3. (3) What's the author's attitude to WeChat?
    A . Doubtful. B . Favorable. C . Opposed. D . Uncaring.
  4. (4) What is the main idea of the text?
A . Two major mobile payment apps. B . The development of mobile payment. C . The different opinions about mobile payment. D . The miracle of Chinese mobile payment.

Each year thousands of U.S. families open their homes and hearts to student visitors from all over the world. In a homestay, students can observe, learn and experience a new lifestyle and culture, while practicing English skills in a home environment.

Successful homestay experiences can help to ease homesickness. Often students feel that they have found a second family who loves and cares for them. This experience can also help students make a smooth transition into an American university or enable them to reach a future career goal.

Hosts involve their student guests in day-to day family activities and also include them in social gatherings such as summertime barbecues, holiday celebrations, or trips to local attractions.

Homestay hosts will reflect the variety of the region in which they live. They may be single parents, retired couples, widows, or families with young children. They will come from different socioeconomic and ethnic backgrounds. What they will have in common is a desire to share their homes and their time with international students.

Usually, international visitors enjoy staying with hosts who have family members of similar ages or with similar interests. The homestay coordinator will consider a student's needs, interests and requests before matching the student with a host.

Living in a homestay will always require an adjustment period. There may be simple house rules or guidelines about Internet usage, laundry, television viewing, meal times, cleanliness, and money matters.

Universities that offer homestays programs set certain standards for hosts. For example, at the University of Delaware, all hosts living more than one mile from campus must provide students with transportation to and from campus every weekday. Hosts must also provide each student with a private, furnished room and access to a shared or private bathroom.

The homestay coordinators carefully screen host applicants to make sure they have a passion for hospitality and an interest in other cultures. Coordinators will also interview and visit applicants to determine the suitability of the living space and meet the family members. Regular meetings, phone calls, and emails keep the hosts up to date in order to keep high standards of operation within the homestays.

  1. (1) What benefits do students who live in a homestay have?
A . They can experience a new lifestyle and culture. B . They can practice their English skills day and night. C . They can be admitted to American universities. D . They can reach their future career goals easily.
  2. (2) What do homestay hosts have in common?
A . A big house to hold holiday celebrations. B . Enough space for having summertime barbecues. C . A desire to share their homes and time with students. D . Time for taking trips to local attractions with students.
  3. (3) What will be taken into consideration before matching the students with the homestay?
A . The hosts' needs, interests and requests. B . The students' needs, interests and requests. C . The hosts' socioeconomic and ethnic backgrounds. D . The students and their family's education backgrounds.
  4. (4) What are the last 3 paragraphs about?
A . Making house rules or guidelines. B . Setting certain standards for hosts. C . Screening host applicants. D . Adjusting to the household.

We all have a favorite little spot to eat. Maybe it's a noodles cart or a sandwich shop. Well, it seems that you don't have to make that difficult choice now. A new Netflix documentary (纪录片) series, Street Food, aims to tell the world about all of our favorite little spots.

Released on April 26, 2019, the series takes viewers through nine Asian countries and regions in search of local communities and their cuisines, from Tom Yum in Bangkok, Thailand, to snails in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. Despite the series' title, Street Food is actually about people.

"At its heart, the show explores how and why some people end up selling noodles, sweets or rice on the street, and the answers aren't always easy," wrote Zach Johnston of news website UPROXX.

Take Toyo from Osaka, Japan, as an example. He's locally famous for serving food and jokes. "He seems like the happiest man alive," writes Calum Henderson in the New Zealand Herald, "until he talks about his father and starts crying." Toyo learned how to cook as a child, out of necessity. His father didn't care about feeding him. Without any money, Toyo would cook weeds and leaves he found in the fields near his school. Today, Toyo has a job that he loves. What about the people who love to eat street food?

"In India, there's this Nihari stew (炖菜)," recalled the series' creator Brian McGinn in an interview with the website Mashable. "Every morning, hundreds of people line up for this stew in this alleyway (小巷)…as everyone tries to be one of the people who are going to get some of this stew before they run out." Moments like these can be found throughout the series, showing that street food is important to local cultures and communities. McGinn says food is a way to look at and understand people's lives. "It's not just nice food shots," Gelb told Mashable. "It's the story, the context and the character that make the food more delicious, more meaningful and more powerful."

  1. (1) What does the documentary mainly talk about?
    A . Spots. B . People. C . Viewers. D . Countries.
  2. (2) The author takes Toyo as an example to show that__________.

Looking through photos on WeChat or reading updates on Weibo can be considered as a waste of time. What's more, everyone else seems to be having more fun or achieving greater success or getting more likes for their photos than you are.

Yet social media is how many people stay connected with long-distance friends or cousins they'd otherwise see only once a year.Researchers have come up with a few easy-to follow tips.

Limit when and where you use social media.

Consider turning your media notifications (通知) off or putting your phone in airplane mode during meals, important conversations or important meetings. Try not to keep your phone or computer in your bedroom or use social media right before bed; studies show that using phones or iPads at this time affects your sleep.

Instead of mindlessly looking through TikTok or watching Weibo stories, try to be mindful every time you use social media.

Do you check WeChat first thing in the morning because you want to read the breaking news or because it's a habit? Does viewing photos of your friend's vacation make you happy?

Each time you check social media, think about why you're doing it, how it makes you feel, and whether that's really what you want.

Pay more attention to your real-life relationships.

Over time, people have more and more online friends and organizations that are no longer connected with them. So unfollow or hide them.Humans have a need for connection. Spending time with friends in person and building networks offline can be protective for your health.

A. Be mindful while using social media.

B. This can make you feel unhappy or uneasy.

C. Pay attention to what you do and how you feel.

D. Using social media can have a bad influence on in-person communications.

E.More and more real-life relationships have been replaced by online connections.

F.Remember that online connections cannot take the place of real-life relationships.

G.So how can people get the benefits of social media without letting it harm their health?
