If the only sports you do are dancing your fingers across your keyboard, you could be in serious danger of more than just becoming overweight and out of shape.
Do you often feel sleepy, like something is weighing down on your head? Do you feel forgetful? Do you sometimes feel uncomfortable up and down your neck and lower back, and you can't explain why? Do you get sick often? It could be radiation (辐射) from your computer causing it. If you spend three hours or more a day in front of a computer (and at this point, who doesn't?), you are more easily harmed by the hazards.
We have got so used to using computers that we often neglect to think of them as dangerous sources of harmful radiation. A safe amount of radiation is 25 V/m (Volts/meter). Do you want to guess how much our personal computers give off?
Keyboard: 1000 V/m
Mouse: 450 V/m
Monitor: 218V/m
CPU: 170V/m
Notebook computers: 2,500 V/m
Ways of Protect Yourself from Harmful Computer Radiation
1 Decorate your desk with cactus plants, they take in radiation.
2 Drink two to three cups of green tea a day and eat an orange daily. The vitamins in tea leaves and oranges protect us from radiation and keep our eyes healthy as well.
3Use a screen filter for your monitor.
4 Avoid having metal objects nearby on your desk.
5 Put the back of the computer to the wall. Most of the radiation comes off the back.
6 Keep your monitor at least 50cm away from your face. 7. Keep your computer rooms ventilated .
8Eat healthily—-especially fruits and vegetables.
9 Don't fall asleep on your computer. Turn it off if you have to rest nearby.
The ways above are useful, why not have a try at once?
We are living in a time when the world is becoming a “village”. People travel around the world sightseeing, studying, working or volunteering. Perhaps in the near future, you will also become one of those people.
Spending time in a foreign country is an (excite) and life-changing experience. You see different sceneries, taste nice food and meet people with all kinds of backgrounds. And (important) thing of all, you explore and even become a part of the local culture.
Your stereotypes(成见) are broken down. You may find French people are not always “romantic”. (America) don't eat McDonald's all the time. And you won't get malaria(疟疾) from a mosquito bite(蚊子叮咬) in Africa.
, culture shock may hit you. Things you take for granted(认为理所当然) at home may no longer be that way in a foreign country. Not everyone thinks like you or does things the way you've always (do). Their tea tastes different. They don't talk (loud) in restaurants. Some might not care much about your life, you may even feel they are a bit cold. It is not better or worse. It is just different. you can do is to take in the differences, while trying to be respectful and humble(谦虚的). Each time you open up (you) mind a little more, you become a better person.
Dear Santa,
Thank you for all of the great gifts you give me this Christmas.
My parents can't seem to decide whether you gave the presents directly, or if you just helped them and my grandma pick out the right presents. So, if you are advising her, please tell her next year that I do not own a Wii.
I don't remember asking you for so many pairs of pants, but thank you for giving me the chance to try them on in the front of my whole family. I enjoyed them so much that I continued to wear them, with the tags (商标) still on.
My mom and the holiday movies are always quick to remind me that Christmas isn't about the presents. It's about togetherness. But without the presents, there's nothing to do to fill up this long, long day. So I think Christmas is about the presents, and I'm sure you agree.
If you do, I have some suggestions about ways that you could make the present part of the day last longer: using packing tape to wrap presents instead of Scotch tape(透明胶带). It took, like, ten minutes to open just one present.
My final suggestion is pretty simple: more presents! If it took the whole day to open all of the presents, then I wouldn't have that terrible time, because my mom says it's wrong to go play video games in my room, but there's nothing else to do outside of my room.
Anyway, thank you again and I look forward to seeing you next Thanksgiving. It's an iTunes gift card for you and hope you like it.
Merry Christmas!

Do you often listen to music at loud volumes? You should know that this habit is bad for your hearing, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).
Over 1 billion young people are at risk of hearing loss because of listening to loud noise for long periods of time, WHO said. Listening to music or watching a TV show at loud volumes can harm your hearing.
The United Nations has standards for safe listening. It is not safe to listen to sounds that are louder than 85 decibels (dB 分贝) for eight hours or 100 dB for 15 minutes. The sound of a busy road is about 85 dB and the sound of a rock concert can be about 100 dB.
Loud noise is harmful to the inner ear (内耳). Most of us are born with about 16,000 hair cells (听毛细胞) in our inner ears. These cells detect (探测) sounds. However, listening to loud noise for a long time can make these cells work too hard and cause some of them to die. This is what causes hearing loss.
Some people might think that their music isn't all that loud. But this can depend on where you are. For example, if you are in a noisy place like the subway, you might turn up your music too loud without realizing it. Later, when you listen to it at the same volume in a quiet place, you might feel uncomfortable.
WHO said the "safe level" for most sound is below 80 decibels for up to 40 hours a week. A level of 80 decibels is roughly equal to the noise of a subway.

Nowadays, it's of great importance to reduce, reuse and recycle, especially in the clothing industry. Every year, about 80 billion items of clothing are made around the world. That's enough to fill over a million football stadiums. It takes about 800 litres of water to make one pair of jeans. With the water, you can take a shower for 285 times. No wonder the fashion industry is the second largest water polluter in the world. Actually, 95% of thrown-away clothing can be recycled to make something new.
As a new industry, clothing rental (租赁) is popular among those who want to protect the environment. But is renting clothes more environmentally-friendly than buying them? In an article for Elle, Elizabeth Cline writes that it's not as sustainable (可持续的) as it seems.
Take shipping for example, which has to go two ways if an item is rented— receiving and returning. Cline writes, "An item ordered online and then returned can send out 20 kilos of carbon ( 碳) each way, and increases up to 50 kilos for rush shipping. However, a pair of jeans bought in a store and washed and worn at home can send out 33.4 kilos, according to a study done by Levi's."
Then there's the burden (负担) of washing, which happens to every item when it's returned. For most rental services, this usually means dry-cleaning, a polluting process. The stain removers ( 去污剂) used for washing can produce harmful waste and air pollution.
Lastly, Cline fears rental services will increase our liking for fast fashion, because it's so easy to get clothes. There's something called "share-washing" that makes people think of wasting not a big deal.
Renting clothes is still preferable to buying them and throwing them away after a few years. However, there's an even better step — wearing what we've already had.

Traveling is one of the most important parts of my life. Last January, I went to visit Paris for the first time. My hotel was in the north of Paris, so I started my city walk from that area. After walking for an hour, I finally reached the well-known Eiffel Tower (艾菲尔铁塔). To tell the truth, it didn't look as fascinating as I had expected. It seemed to be nothing but a tall thing made of brown iron. I just took some pictures and then walked away.
While I was sitting to rest, an old man's voice caught my attention, "Bonjour" ("Hi" in English)!"I turned around and saw an old French man. He might be my grandfather's age. I replied with "Bonjour!" He couldn't speak much English, so we talked in English and French, and used body language. Traveling alone made me alert when strangers came to me. I tried to avoid talking about any personal information and even thought about running away. Luckily, not all strangers are dangerous. This man was friendly. He was hanging around in the city center for the weekend. Finally, he became my tour guide and took me to lots of interesting places. We said goodbye when it became dark.
When I was about to go back to the hotel, something shiny in the dark sky drew my attention. It was the Eiffel Tower! The ugly iron Eiffel Tower suddenly became a diamond (钻石) in the dark night. It was truly amazing. Up to now, I have visited Paris three times. And still, whenever I go to Paris, I find something interesting that makes me go back again and again.
This is a light-hearted book filled with colorful pictures. The book mainly tells that all feelings are OK, which is important for children to understand. This is a great introduction to talking about feelings. The funny pictures and simple words are perfect for young children. |
|
This book is more likely to catch boys' attention, although girls may enjoy it too. The basic message is that everyone has feelings. The pictures in this book are of superheroes that look disappointed, sad, embarrassed and so on. The final page is beautiful: a dad and his little son are reading together. They're tough guys "who love each other very much". |
|
This book invites children to imagine that everyone carries a bucket(桶) filled with good feelings. We can help fill people's buckets by doing kind things. One of the many good things about the book is that it talks about the fact that we should fill our own buckets by taking care of ourselves. It also talks about the fact that doing nice things for people makes us feel good. |
The three books can help you teach your children about their feelings and how to manage them. As a primary school teacher, I've used them to teach my students about different feelings. Helping children learn to express and manage their feelings can lead to an increase in confidence(自信心).

There are seabirds as well as land-birds. The most ordinary seabird is the seagull(海鸥). It has a white body, a white head, and a yellow beak(喙). There is a spot of red at the very end of the beak. All gulls have very strong wings so that they can fly far out to sea. If a gull flies out too far, and is too tired to fly back to the shore(海滨), it does not get scared, for it can sit and rest upon the waves(海浪). A seagull's wings do not get wet because all its feathers(羽毛) have a kind of oil over them, so that when the water gets on to the feathers it just runs off again. Seagulls can even sleep on the waves. Seamen know a lot about seagulls and they never kill them. When the seagulls fly a long way out to sea, seamen say that it means fine weather is coming. When the seagulls stay near the shore, seamen say that there will be much wind and rain, and perhaps a storm, for the seagulls know more about the weather than seamen do.
