As I stuck in the mud (泥), with my bike on top of me, I wondered what had forced me to come here. Madagascar is not a good place for a cycling holiday: one of the world's poorest countries, only 11 percent of roadway is paved (铺). South of the town of Antalaha, where I started, the road was in worse condition.
I appeared from a week in the wilderness and reached the start of the Route National 5 at Maroantsetra, but my dream of a smooth road and speed was suddenly destroyed by mud. The "worst road in the country" changed my bicycle into a burden (负担) for days. Finally, I was claimed by the road. Tired. Alone.
As I wiped (擦) the mud from my face and looked upwards, I was greeted by a Malagasy man. He helped me stand up and smiled playfully while he pointed to my bike, which sat next to his. I started again. But I fell again in the mud. Angrily, I told him to go on, but if he understood he showed no sign of it. His smile forced me back onto the bike. We continued like this for hours. But I fell less. Studying my quick guide, slowly I learned. As we passed through a village, a group of children saw me and shouted loudly. His only words were: "Their parents tell them while people steal and eat them. Funny, no?"
I tried to ask why, but he had already set off. I tried to catch up; as I got closer, he took it as a challenge and sped up. We raced along the road. I rode a little faster and I was just behind, about to catch up with him. With a smile, he sped up and was away, leaving me breathless.
All of us spend a large part of our lives at home — eating, sleeping, relaxing and communicating with our family members. Our home is a shelter for us, away from the noisy, busy, and polluted world outside — a place where we can let down our hair and dress casually. Ecofriendliness (环保) is a hot word today and we all know we should make our environment as ecofriendly as possible. This is not only good for our health, but also good for the outward environment. Here are some easy and helpful tips to make your home ecofriendly.
Kitchen
Plan the kitchen to be bright and airy so that you don't have to turn on the lights at daytime. Don't make wasteful use of the gas. Keep all ingredients for cooking ready before lighting the gas. Turn it to low when not required — always using it on "high" burns a lot of gas.
Indoor plants
Plants are extremely ecofriendly and can be used to make your home look lively. Apart from adding life to home, they give out O2, thus making the air inside fresh. You can keep plants in your home, but be sure to show them some sunlight regularly. Also, if they are kept outside, clean their leaves with a wet cloth, as dust may be added to them. A home decorated (装饰) with plants looks attractive. Plants are a natural home decorating gift that shows concern about the environment. A green plant is a wonderful gift which will protect the earth and is sure to be appreciated.
Saving water
Most of the time, we take water for granted — we keep water running while brushing our teeth or washing clothes. Needless to say, this is a huge waste of natural resources (资源). Try to recycle water. For example, the water used for washing vegetables can be used for watering plants; the soapy water used for washing clothes can be used to clean the bathroom and kitchen.
As we all know, friendship is of great importance in our daily life. A friend can give us help and share our difficulties and happiness. But how to make friends is still difficult for some of us.
Be friendly to others. You should try to make a stranger feel at home wherever he happens to be. Think more of others than of yourself and never judge a person by his appearance and clothes.
Be reliable. If you and your friends agree to meet somewhere, don't be late. If you're not going to make it on time or make it at all, call them as soon as you realize it. Be someone that people know they can depend on.
Listen carefully to what people say, remember important details about them (their names, their likes and dislikes), ask questions about their interests, and just take time to learn more about them.
Encourage and support your friends: A true friend always gives encouragement to his friends. Never make fun of or laugh at your friends in front of others. Never leave your friends when they are in trouble. You should come to support them.
A. Be a good listener.
B. A friend to all is a friend to none.
C. When you say you'll do something, do it.
D. He will stay with them in good as well as bad times.
E. The following information can give you some tips.
F. Smile at others and you are sure to get a smile in return.
G. A true friend should always share the same interest with you.
Jack Brown, an office worker, lives in Washington. He inherited (继承) a million dollars when he was 23, but he wasn't happy at all. When his college friends were looking for their jobs, he didn't have to. Jack decided to live a simple life like everyone else. He gave $ 10,000 of his money to a charity (慈善机构) to help poor children live a better life. Today he is 36. He still wears cheap shoes and clothes and drives a small car only, but he is very happy.
Up to now Jack has helped some children from poor countries all over the world, by sending them each $ 200 a month. The money was used for the children's study, food, medicine and clothing. Jack receives a report each year on the children's progress (进步). They can write to each other, but usually the children do not speak English.
When Jack first heard about these children, he wanted to help them. "It was nothing special," he said. "Until I went to these countries and met the children I was helping, l didn't know anything about their lives." Once Jack went to meet a little girl in Africa. He said that the meeting was very exciting. "When I met her, I felt very, very happy." he said, "And I saw that the money was used for a good cause. It brought me happiness. I want to do everything I can to go on helping those children."
Have you ever wondered how the trainers at Sea World get the 19,000pound whale to jump 22 feet out of water and perform tricks? They get that whale to go over a rope farther out of the water than most of us can imagine. .
So how do the trainers at Sea World do it? The first thing they do is reinforce (强化) the behavior that they want repeated—in this case, to get the whale to go over the rope. , in a position where the whale can't help but do what's expected of it. Every time the whale goes over the rope, it's given positive reinforcement and gets fed with fish. But what happened when the whale goes under the rope? Nothing—no criticism, no warning and no feedback. .
Positive reinforcement is the key of that simple principle that produces such splendid results. And as the whale begins to go over the rope more often than under, the trainers begin to raise the rope. It must be raised slowly enough so that the whale doesn't starve.
. Make a big deal out of the good and little stuff that we want consistently. Secondly, under criticize. People know they need help when they mess up. , people will not forget the event and usually will not repeat it.
So we need to set up the circumstances so that people can't fail. Over celebrate, under criticize...and know how far to raise the rope.
A. This is a great challenge
B. And the whale stays right where it is
C. If we figure out a way to motivate the whale
D. They start with the rope below the surface of the water
E. If we under criticize, punish and discipline less than expected
F. Whales are taught that their negative behavior won't be acknowledged
G. The simple lesson to be learned from the whale trainers is to overcelebrate

Getting rid of dirt, in the opinion of most people, is a good thing. However, there is nothing fixed about attitudes to dirt.
In the early 16th century, people thought that dirt on the skin was a means to block out disease, as medical opinion had it that washing off dirt with hot water could open up the skin and let ills in. A particular danger was thought to lie in public baths. By 1538, the French king had closed the bath houses in his kingdom. So did the king of England in 1546. Thus began a long time when the rich and the poor in Europe lived with dirt in a friendly way. Henry Ⅳ, King of France, was famously dirty. Upon learning that a nobleman had taken a bath, the king ordered that, to avoid the attack of disease, the nobleman should not go out.
Though the belief in the merit (好处) of dirt was longlived, dirt has no longer been regarded as a nice neighbor ever since the 18 century. Scientifically speaking, cleaning away dirt is good to health. Clean water supply and hand washing are practical means of preventing disease. Yet, it seems that standards of cleanliness have moved beyond science since World War Ⅱ. Advertisements repeatedly sell the idea: clothes need to be whiter than white, cloths ever softer, surfaces to shine. Has the hate for dirt, however, gone too far?
Attitudes to dirt still differ hugely nowadays. Many firsttime parents nervously try to warn their children off touching dirt, which might be responsible for the spread of disease. On the contrary, Mary Ruebush, an American immunologist (免疫学家), encourages children to play in the dirt to build up a strong immune system. And the latter (后者) position is gaining some ground.
Dino Impagliazzo cuts onions like a professional cook. The old man makes a great vegetable soup,
1 most of his customers can't even 2 a piece of bread.
Impagliazzo, the founder of the RomAmoR association (协会), began cooking for the homeless fifteen years ago. The 3 came to Impagliazzo when a homeless man asked him for 4. "I realized that perhaps instead of giving him a bill to buy sandwiches, 6 some sandwiches would be better, and thus began our 7," Impagliazzo said.
He started out by making sandwiches from his home, and then moved on to hot meals. 8, his organization moved to a fully-equipped kitchen. Volunteers can now be found cooking up food on a(n) 9 basis. Impagliazzo 13 food materials from local stores. The workers there greet him warmly and are always 14 to make a contribution.
Finally, Impagliazzo's 15 has earned him the title of Rome's "chef of the poor".
If you'll be taking vacation time in the coming year and plan on flying, here are some useful tips for buying a cheap ticket.
When to buy
If you're going to buy tickets for domestic (国内的) flights, check prices on Tuesday afternoons. This is an old tip but still useful because most U. S. carriers continue to release sales on Tuesday morning, and competitors quickly drop their fares to match the better deals.
When to fly
Weekdays continue to be generally cheaper times to fly than weekends for most flights. In the U. S. , the cheapest days are typically Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday. A good itinerary (旅行计划) for the expensive U. S. spring break travel period is scheduled from Tuesday to Saturday; it will save you money (in most cases).
Where to fly
We continue to see good deals to Boston and Denver and more and more nice prices to Chicago, Seattle and Washington, D. C. . As for Europe, there have been surprising deals throughout the fall and those will continue into the winter.
Direct flights vs connecting flights
Compare the price of direct flights with that of connecting flights. Sometimes adding a stop to your route will save you money, and it might be enough to endure the extra long flying day. An example: San Francisco to Raleigh: $553 for a direct flight, $362 with one stop.
You'd better think twice about the direct flight for San Francisco to Raleigh.
Compare, compare, compare
Stifle the impulse to go to your favorite airline site to purchase tickets without doing any comparison. Example: Let's say you want to fly from New York to London and figure your favorite U. S. legacy carrier will get you there for the best price—$554 for a round trip.
However, the comparison site also shows a cheaper flight from the same legacy carrier ($521). See what you're missing when you fail to do comparison?
Thanks to a program called Hunger: Not Impossible (HNI), hungry people could have access to fresh, healthy food in their neighborhood by texting one simple word: Hungry. On one hand. people in charge of the program learn that each year 42 million Americans go hungry including 15. 9 million children. On the other hand, grocery stores, restaurants, and food providers throw out 60 million tons of unused food. HNI had a solution—connectivity.
HNI started fundraising and developing partnerships. Then they make plans with organizations and charities to help locate people who suffer from food insecurity. And they reached out to technical experts at Salesforce who developed an easy-to-use text-driven platform using a chat box. With all the elements in place, a simple text started the goodwill rolling.
When a needy person types in "Hungry" and sends the text message to HNI. they receive a message, back showing the closest locations that are offering free food. They also get a text displaying different menu options. They simply select a restaurant, choose the meal, then heads to the takeout counter where they pick up their free meal alongside paying customers. No questions are asked and dignity is preserved. The pilot project began in Venice Beach, California, providing over 250 meals to more than 50 youth in three weeks. HNI then grew to Bentonville. Arkansas, Klamath Falls Oregon? and St; Louis. Missouri.
"Providing food is the first step in transforming lives for the best." Michelle DiBattiste, operations and volunteer manager at Safe Place for Youth said in the press release, "By satisfying that initial survived instinct of finding food. Hunger: Not Impossible provides necessary space for personal growth, self-realization and finding stability. If there were less hungry people in the world, the crime rate would be reduced? there would be fewer homeless people, and the cost of healthcare would cut down. "

"Were you Mark's math teacher?" an old man came to my office and asked. I nodded. "Mark talked about you a lot. I want to show you something," he said, taking a wallet out of his pocket. "They found this on him when he was killed in the battle. We thought you might recognize it. "
Opening the wallet, he carefully removed two worn pieces of notebook paper that had obviously been taped, folded and refolded many times. I knew without looking that the papers were the ones on which I had listed all the good things each of Mark's classmates had said about him. And that happened 20 years ago.
Mark was in the third grade class I taught. All 34 of my students were dear to me, but Mark was one in a million. Very neat in appearance, he had that happytobealive attitude that made even his occasional misbehavior delightful.
Mark also talked without stopping. I tried to remind him again and again that talking without permission was unacceptable. What impressed me so much, though, was the sincere response every time I had to correct him for misbehaving. "Thank you for correcting me, Sister!" I didn't know what to make of it at first but before long I became accustomed to hearing it many times a day.
One morning my patience was growing thin when Mark talked once too often. I made a new teacher's mistake. I looked at Mark and said, "If you say one more word, I am going to tape your mouth shut!"
It wasn't ten seconds later when Chuck shouted, "Mark is talking again." I hadn't asked any of the students to help me watch Mark, but since I had stated the punishment in front of the class, I had to act on it.
Paragraph 1:
I walked to my desk and took out a roll of tape.
Paragraph 2:
One day I decided to do something different when Mark talked again in class.
