Building a bridge across the Straits(海峡)
On May 3rd, 2005, KMT chairman Lien Chan finished his eight-day visit to the mainland. Only two days later, another Taiwanese leader, James Song (Song Chuyu), visited the mainland again.
Song is the chairman of the People First Party(亲民党) in Taiwan. On his nine-day trip from May 5th to 13rd, he visited Xi'an, Nanjing, Shanghai and Changsha, as well as Beijing.
Song, 63, was born in Xiangtan, Hunan Province in 1942. He went to Taiwan with his father at the age of seven.
On May 9th, Song went back to Xiangtan to sweep his ancestor's(祖先的) tomb.
He also met President Hu Jintao when he arrived in Beijing on May 11th.
Song hoped his trip could build a bridge between the two sides. "We are here to build a bridge of trust, understanding and cooperation(合作) between Taiwan and the mainland." he said. The two parties in Taiwan both agree with the "One China" policy and are in favor of the final unification(统一) of China.
Things continue to get better since Lien's visit. Taiwan can now sell more fruit in the mainland. The mainland gave a pair of giant pandas to Taiwan.
More importantly, mainland people will soon be able to travel to the beautiful island.
Jeff Corwin is a scientist and author. He does these jobs with one life goal: to help save animals and their habitats. His latest book,100 Heartbeats: The Race to Save Earth's Most Endangered Species, is a collection of stories about animals on the edge(边缘) of extinction. Corwin recently talked to TFK kid reporter Sarah Horbacewicz.
Reporter: How would you describe your job? Corwin: My job is to travel around, look at animals and tell their stories. |
Reporter: When did you know this is what you wanted to do? Corwin: I knew that when I was 6 years old. My dad was a police officer, and we lived in the city. I really enjoyed the time when I could go to the quiet countryside. The day that I saw my very first wild snake, I knew that's what I would do for the rest of my life. I didn't know if I would be a teacher or a zookeeper, but I know I would have a life connected with (与……有关) nature. |
Reporter: Why did you write the book? Corwin: We're losing species (物种) very fast. I wanted to show people that while we are in a very serious situation, we are not at the point of no return. If we make big changes, we may have the chance to save what remains. |
Reporter: Is it true that humans are the reason that many of these animals are in danger? Corwin: Human beings have a powerful effect on every other living thing. The challenge is to make that effect a positive one. |

English has become a language that is most widely used in the world. So which country, not including English-speaking countries, speaks English best? And where does China rank (排名)?
Swedish language education company EF published their 2016 English Proficiency Index (熟练度指标) this month. The Netherlands (荷兰) ranked first, followed by Denmark and Sweden. The rankings are based on English reading and listening test results of 950,000 people from 72 countries and areas.
According to the index, the English proficiency in China is still low, ranking 39th. Out of the whole country, people in Shanghai are the best English speakers. They speak better English than Italians and French. Hong Kong and Beijing follow Shanghai as China's next best English-speaking cities.
"Shanghai and Beijing rank high because they are international cities," EF senior manager Christopher McCormick said. "However, across China, proficiency in English is different from east to west."
China has 400 million English learners, reported China Daily. However, the teaching of English in some areas is not very good. According to the People's Daily Online, there are seven primary schools in Shetianqiao town in Hunan, but only one English teacher. Many students still learn English by rote memorization.
Sebastian Magnusson, an officer at the Swedish embassy (大使馆) in Beijing, gave some advice. Swedish people speak English well and Magnusson himself is also fluent in Chinese. He said TV programs, movies and even computer games could be learning tools. "Do not limit it to textbooks. What matters most is to use what you've learned," Magnusson said.
For Schultz, a 77-year-old man, this is a chance of a lifetime. Schultz is part of a group of around 50 Germans who are on a bus journey along the ancient Silk Road.
Speaking of his journey, he says, "I have been deeply interested in the Silk Road since I was a child, but now I finally have a chance to experience it."
The two-month bus journey will take the group through Germany, Russia, and other 4 European countries. They will then enter China from the country's western part. It will be an unforgettable memory for them.
Nearly half of the 13,000-kilometer trip will be inside China. From Xinjiang in the west to Shanghai in the east, the German visitors will see more than 20 Chinese cities. "We have managed the trip of the Silk Road for around 10 years. An increasing number of people, not only from German-speaking countries, have been joining us," says Liu Guoqiang from China Tours.
Almost 26 million foreigners traveled to China in 2015, and about 5 million of them were from Europe. Beijing, Xi'an, Shanghai and the Yangtze River are traditional Chinese travel destinations for European tourists. Speaking of where he wants to go, Schultz says, "Compared with modern cities, the culture in western China attracts(吸引)me more."
As Shi Xiang, head of the China Tours, says, "Being a new brand to attract foreign visitors, the Silk Road is good for people to know more about China, especially the northwestern part of the country."

Here, a reporter is interviewing the 12-year-old singer, Mara Justine, who's one of the youngest contestants of America's Got Talent.
Reporter: Why did you choose to compete on America's Got Talent instead of one of the other singing competitions?
Mara: Well, America's Got Talent actually called me because I had auditioned before, when I was 9 or 10. I guess they looked over those videos. They asked me to audition again.
Reporter: How does it feel to be one of the youngest people on the show?
Mara: There are a lot of other people with more experience, but I just try to do my best. I always go on to the stage thinking good thoughts, never bad thoughts.
Reporter: Who is your role model or idol(偶像)? What inspires you?
Mara: For singing, my idols are Aretha Franklin and Christina Aguilera, but a role model to me would be my mom. I love her with all my heart—she encourages me to believe in my dreams.
Reporter: What are your other hobbies?
Mara: I love playing video games, and I usually go to the park with my family. We usually play basketball. We also like to play tennis!
Students aiming to(以…为目标)enter Tsinghua University(清华大学) this year had better have the ability to swim or prepare to learn swimming and pass a swim test since the well-known university will not present the certificate(证书) to their students if they cannot swim.
On Monday March 27 th, Beijing Daily News reported that new students at Tsinghua University will have to take swimming courses. If they fail in the swimming test during their study, they won't receive their degrees if they cannot swim before their graduation(毕业).
Why does the university relate the swimming ability with degrees? Liu Bo, the head of the Sports Science and Physical Education, said, "As a survival skill, students can keep themselves safe from danger when they are in water. Students can also benefit a lot from swimming, since it is helpful in improving students' physical abilities as a water sport."
Whether it's summer or not, swimming can keep yourself up, energetic, and active. Regular swimming is a good way to keep people healthy. Swimming also does the job of making your skin soft, younger, and healthier. Playing with water makes people feel young, and it washes away all the negative feelings that you have. People can also get pleasure from swimming.
Moreover, it also relaxes people's mind in some ways. Now a great deal of people suffer from stress coming from study, work, family, and other aspects of life. According to surveys, 74% of people say that the feeling of stress has greatly reduced, and in fact, some of them do not feel the pressure (压力)when they are in the water.

Both the ticket money and the donated money would be sent to the 9 areas and some of the children would go back to school. Now many charity shows are held in our country, not only to support education in poor areas 10 to help people in trouble. I hope the whole world will become more and more beautiful with kind people's help.
Since the outbreak of the novel coronavirus began in Wuhan in Dec 2019, China has mobilized (调动) the power of the whole country. Now, epidemic (疫情) control and prevention efforts are starting to take effect.
According to a key meeting held on Feb 21, the spread of the epidemic is being contained. On Feb 24, mainland areas outside of Hubei reported nine new infections (感染), the first single- digit (个位数) increase in weeks, according to the National Health Commission.
Vaccine (疫苗) development is also progressing. Some vaccines have been tested on animals, according to the Ministry of Science and Technology. "If vaccine development is compared to building a house, we have laid the foundation (地基) and the building is starting to emerge (出现) from the ground," Zeng Yixin, deputy director of the National Health Commission, said to China Daily.
However, the turning point of the epidemic is yet to come. After millions of people return to work in major cities, the number of new infections should be kept low for two weeks. This is expected to be a turning point in China, according to the Shanghai Institutes for International Studies. But the situation in Hubei is still serious.
The situation outside of China is concerning. As of 4 pm on Feb 27, the total number of confirmed (确诊) infections in South Korea had risen to 1,766, Xinhua reported. Italy had reported 470 confirmed cases as of Feb 26, as well as 12 deaths. Singapore, Japan and Iran have also found cases.
"The window of opportunity (the best time to contain the outbreak) may be closing," said WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus. He called on the international community to act quickly to control the epidemic before the window closes completely.
