A Brief History of Time by Stephen Hawking is worth reading, especially for those who love science, space, physics, and the universe (宇宙). About half of Hawking's text is rather hard to understand, which must be the reason why he added pictures to newer editions. Some of the "abstract (抽象)" things are hard to imagine, so the pictures help you understand.

This book is based on theoretical physics (理论物理). Most people read the cover and think that it will be way over their heads, but it's not. There are two ways to read it. You can read the chapter overviews, which are basic and you'll still learn a lot, but it won't be too difficult. Or, you can read the full details (细节) in each chapter, which is how you'll learn the most.

This book makes references (参考) to other physicists, history, and current social and economic issues (问题), and explains how each of us is involved in the universe. Dr. Hawking also openly says "I think" about things. He gives his view on matters and shows the facts to help you see what you think the answer is, so it seems as if (好像) he was talking directly to you.

The reason why I love this book more than any other physics "text" is because Dr. Hawking wrote it like a novel. He's telling a story, the story of the universe, and it's just fun to read!

I always want to know how and why something is, and in this book Dr. Hawking always answers this question as best he can. If he can't give you a definite answer, he'll tell you what he thinks and help you develop your own opinion. I truly hope that you will read this unusual book.

  1. (1) Stephen Hawking added pictures to A Brief History of Time to         .
A . make it more attractive to readers B . make it easy to understand C . help you to develop your imagination D . show you more about the universe

A . higher than their heads B . rather difficult for them to understand C . very easy for them to read D . too high for them to reach
  3. (3) If you         , you'll learn the most about the book.
A .  read the full details in each chapter B . read the chapter overviews C . draw pictures according to the book D . read the cover of the book
  4. (4) What makes you feel as if Dr Hawking was talking directly to you?
A . He tells me what he thinks and helps me develop my own opinion. B . He openly says “I think” about things. C . He always answers how and why something is as best he can. D . He gives his view on matters and shows the facts to help me see what I think the answer is.
  5. (5) According to the writer, A Brief History of Time is         .
    A . expensive B . boring C . interesting D . confusing
  6. (6) We can get the idea from this passage that         .
A . Hawking doesn't answer all the questions about the universe B . the book can't make references to other physicists C . the book doesn't deal with the economy but science D . Hawking can talk to everyone face to face

Laugh at yourself. Learning to laugh at yourself is one of the biggest differences between happy people and depressed (沮丧的) people. If you can turn hard moments, mistakes, and shortcomings as chances for a good laugh at yourself, those things will affect you less.

Laughing at yourself helps to tell the differences between "who you are" and "what you do." Everyone possibly makes a mistake sometimes, and it doesn't have to define (定义) you as a person. Laughing at yourself communicates to both you and the people around you that it's okay.

Don't worry about the sound of your laugh. Everyone's laugh is different, if yours is polite and the source (来源) of legitimate (合理的) joy, you don't need to worry about having an "ugly" laugh. There's no such thing.

If you're worried about laughing and often worried what people will think of you, it's hard to really have fun. If you're with the kind of people who make fun of someone for laughing, find new friends.

Take your time. Even a busy person should learn to spare time for himself and spend time just staying alone. Doing these will help you relax and keep you calm and ready to laugh.

Make sure you do something you enjoy each day. Relax by playing a record and smiling to yourself, having your favorite drink. Keep control of your mood.

Try to add 15 minutes to your day where you can do something like watch a comedy TV play or look at humorous photos online. Try to put this in your timetable right after the most stressful part of your day if you can.

The Art of Paper

Chen Zijiang is a paper cutting expert whom I interviewed for my article on Chinese Art. Paper-cutting is something that he learned to do from an early age.

"It is a Chinese folk art with a long history," Mr. Chen told me, "Paper cuts of animals have been found in tombs. " He added that by the Southern Song Dynasty, paper-cutting had become an important part of everyday life.

They are paper cuts for decoration, for religious purposes (宗教目的) and for design patterns.

Paper cuts for decoration are often seen, on windows and gates. They are also used on presents. A present for parents whose child has recently been born might show a paper cut of children, for example. Paper cuts which show the Chinese character for double happiness are often used to celebrate weddings.

Paper cuts for religious purposes are often found in temples

The third kind of paper cuts are these used to make patterns on clothing. They are also sometimes used to decorate jewelry (珠宝) boxes. .

A. They are usually put up during holidays to bring good luck.

B. They are also used as offerings to the dead.

C. Dragons are very popular patterns for these designs.

D. They can date back to the time of the Northern and Southern Dynasty.

Jazz is a type of music. Some people say that jazz is America's only true art form. That's because it began there. Hundreds of years ago, black people worked as slaves (奴隶) and made up songs to pass the time. It wasn't called jazz then, but the way the slaves were playing and singing music was special.

The music of America's black people began to be called jazz in the early 1900s.

What makes jazz special is improvisation(即兴创作). That means making the music upon the spot(当场).No music in front of you. No long discussion with other people in your band.

“It's free. It's beautiful, "says Geoffrey, a sixth-grader at Stratford Landing Elementary School. Geoffrey is such a good musician that he has performed at the Kennedy Center.

Geoffrey says, "It's easy to express your feelings through jazz. You should focus on being creative and using your imagination in jazz."

Washington, D.C. is a very important place in the history of jazz. It has a famous jazz piano player: Duke Ellington.

Born in Washington in 1899, Ellington as a child wanted to play baseball instead of the piano. But his parents played the piano, so he started playing the piano when he was seven years old.

In 1920, he played small shows at the Howard Theater. When he was 24, he moved to New York, but he didn't forget his hometown. He called his band the Washingtonians and later he returned to perform at the Lincoln Theater.

What can you do to help yourself get out of stress or worry? If you're an artist, you keep making art. And if you have never considered yourself an artist, now it is the time to take up an artistic hobby such as drawing or painting. It is never too late to start. Everyone can do it. If you can hold a brush or crayon, you can create art.

Creating art heals (治愈) not only the mind and spirit but also the body since all of these are connected. As you draw or paint, your breathing slows, your blood pressure lowers, and your mind lets go of daily problems. This slowing down allows you to fully experience the moment. The process not only relaxes you but also brings a feeling of joy, increasing your energy and enthusiasm (热情) for life.

Making art also allows you to play, freeing you to find out and try out new materials and methods. It also lets you express pleasure by seeing beauty where others may not. Creating art provides you a special chance to express your anger or upset, as well as your personal ideas.

Although the process of making art is the most important part, your finished product is significant too. Your painting or drawing will remind you of the lessons you learned while making it, and you may feel energetic just by looking at it.

If you don't know how to begin, here are some ways to start creating art. If possible, set aside a small table with your brushes and watercolors so you can get creative whenever you get inspiration. Without thinking much about it, just choose colors that you like and start painting with them, or cut pictures with those colors out of magazines and glue them down, combining (结合) them with paints. The act of enjoying the colors and working on the color combinations will give you something to focus on instead of the stresses of your daily life.

  1. (1) What do you need to do if you start making art according to Paragraph 1?
A . Ask a teacher for help. B . Start as early as possible. C . Be a young artist first. D . Just have a brush or crayon.

    A . Expensive. B . Useless. C . Important. D . Unexpected.

A . You must be very careful while choosing colors. B . You can begin painting whenever you get inspired. C . You can get brushes and watercolors for preparation. D . You may use magazines to make color combinations.
  5. (5) What's the writer's purpose of writing the text?
A . To tell us how to be an artist. B . To introduce the history of art. C . To encourage us to make art. D . To teach us how to choose colors.

One Day

One day I counted your fingers and kissed each one.

One day the first snowflakes fell, and I held you up and watched them melt on your baby skin.

One day, we crossed the street, and you held my hand tight.

Then, you were my baby, and now you are my child.

Sometimes, when you sleep, I watch your dream, and I dream too...

That someday you will dive into the cool, clear water of a lake.

Someday you will walk into a deep wood.

Someday you will run so fast and so far, your heart will feel like fire.

Someday you will swing high, so high, higher than you ever dared to swing.

Someday you will hear something so unhappy that you will fold up with sorrow.

Someday you will call a song to the wind, and the wind will carry your song away.

Someday I will stand on this porch and watch your arms waving to me until I no longer see you.

Someday you will look at this house and wonder how something that feels so big can look so small.

Someday I will watch you brushing your child's hair.

Someday, a long time from now, your own hair will glow silver in the sun.

And when that day comes, love, you will remember me.
