    China has a very long history. It has many great traditional skills that have a wide influence (影响). Here we mainly talk about kites.

    The earliest mention of a kite in ancient China dates back to the 5th century BC. It was made of wood and used as a rescue signal (求救信号).

    At the time between 770 and 221 BC, Chinese kites were actually called "muyuan". They were first invented in Shandong Province for military purposes (军事目的). The kites were used to send important messages during the Chu-Han War. During the Tang Dynasty, kites were made of lighter materials, such as bamboo, silk and paper. At that time, people began to fly kites for other purposes. It was believed that letting go of the kite could remove bad luck and illness.

    Today, kite-flying is an interesting and healthy activity in China. There are large kite-flying festivals held throughout the country, and kite makers can show off their skills during the festivals.

    Not all inventions are made by scientists. Kids can also make history with their inventions.

    The state flag of Alaska was designed by 13 year 一 old Bennie Benson in 1926. His design was chosen from a flag 一 designing competition. It became the official flag in 1959. Bennie won a $ 1,000 scholarship (奖学金) and a watch.

    Frank Epperson invented the Popsicle in 1905 when be was only 11 years old. It was called the Epsicle at that time. Frank left his drink outside the door overnight with a stick in it. That night the temperature dropped and everything was frozen, including Frank s drink. That didn't stop him from tasting it, so today we have Popsicles to eat,

    In 1642 Blaise Pascal designed the first counting machine when he was about 19. The machine was for his father, a tax collector, to make his job easier. Blaise named it the Pascaline. He made about 50 of them, but nobody was interested in it. People thought it would take jobs away from therm. 300 years went by, and the calculator (计算器) finally became a success. In 1968, the programming language, PASCAL, was named after him.

    Cars are lots of fun, but they could also be dangerous. We have to be careful when we drive them or ride in them.

    It's always a good idea to wear your seat belt when you're in a car. Why? Think about this example: You put an egg on a skateboard and give it a push. If the skateboard hits a stone, it will stop, but the egg won't. It will fly through the air, hit the ground and break.

    Now, think what will happen if you tie the egg to the skateboard. When the skateboard hits a stone， the egg won't go flying. It will stay safe on the skateboard.

    Volvo，a famous carmaker, made the seat belts widely used in the 1950s.

    Air bags are also very important for car safety, because sometimes a seat belt isn't enough. If the car is going really fast and runs into something, seat belts could even hurt the people who wear them. Most new cars have air bags in front of and next to the seats. When a car hits something, its air bags will come out quickly in less than one second to keep the people inside safe.

    When people talk to each other, write letters or make phone calls, words of the spoken from or the written form can send any massage they want to pass on.

    But besides words, do you know any other ways you can use to communicate with people? Rich expressions on your face can be one of them. A smile on your face shows that you are happy. Tears in your eyes tell others that you are sad or excited. Body languages can do the same job. When you put your hand up in class，the teacher knows that you want to say something or you may have some questions to ask. You shake your head from side to side and people know you are saying "no" or refuse others' requirements. When you nod, people will understand that you are saying "yes" or agree to others' opinions or suggestions.

    Other forms can also carry different messages. For example, a sign at the bus stop gives passengers information on which bus to take. The flag language made by soldiers can pass different orders. Sound from the school bell tells the students and the teachers when to begin or end a class. A photographer can use the photos he has taken to tell others about what he thinks of the world around him. Music and films also convey the feelings and ideas of the musicians and the directors.

    So next time when you see a piece of art or listen to some music，take it as communication with its creator and try to get the meaning behind it.

    Where in the world can you take an hour's train ride, and pass a forest, a London street, a scene from the Wild West, and a burning building that never burns down? There's only one place, and that's Hollywood, in California. The scenes you see from the tourist train are film sets(布景) in the Universal Studios, one of the oldest and largest movie companies in the USA.

    A visit to Universal Studios brings back memories of great days of Hollywood, the films and the stars. But they are only memories. Hollywood isn't quite the same as it used to be. Costs have gone up and confidence has gone down. Movie-makers are afraid to spend their money on expensive new ideas. Instead, they repeat old ones.

    The film industry is changing fast. Teenagers still go out to the movies. The theatre is a good place to meet friends away from home. But older people mostly stay home to watch series, like Dynasty, and they have become as important to Hollywood as expensive movies. These "soap opera", as they are called, show rich, powerful families living in beautiful homes and wearing beautiful clothes. But the actors and actresses are nearly all middle-aged, like many of the people who watch them.

    Though it is soap operas that are keeping the film-makers of Hollywood in business, big films are still being made in America. But more and more of them are made outside Hollywood. New York is the most important new centre, but there are many others as well. Movie-makers have realized that they don't need Hollywood any more. Modern cameras and real houses take the place of expensively made copies in a studio. Other states, especially Florida and Texas, are working hard to take the film business away from California. They are offering better working conditions and lower cost.

    But Hollywood is fighting back. The state of California is trying hard to keep its best-known industry.

Once upon a time, there lived a strange bird. The bird had1heads but only one stomach.

Many hundreds of years ago, a native (土著的) American chief named Shenandoah lived with his people in what is now the state of Virginia. Very l is known about Shenandoah, but the soft sound of his name was given to a river. One day there was a loud crashing sound at one end of the lake. The lake began to disappear. Its water rout of the vallev through a break (裂口) in the mountain side. The waters ran on and on until they j another river, which today is known as the Potomac.

At last, the lake was gone. In its place was only a river. It is this way today. The lake is gone, but the beautiful Shenandoah River runs on.

    On Feb. 26th, 2020, when an Italian went to work with a mask to prevent COVID-19, his workmates thought he was "causing panic(恐慌)". You might wonder why the East and the West have different ideas about wearing masks.

In the West, people wear masks only when they get sick. People see masks as a tool(工具) to protect sick people and prevent the disease from spreading, so healthy people don't need to wear masks. Wearing masks in public easily makes them feel "worried" and "shy". They are "afraid of being looked at differently."

However, it's common in Asia. During the 2003 SARS epidemic, masks were widely used in China and East Asia. Many Chinese also like to wear masks to stay warm in winter or protect against air pollution.

In Japan, wearing masks shows your politeness when you get a cold or the flu. Some masks even have different colors and drawings. Young women may wear masks when they don't have their makeup on. Many pop stars in Asia also use masks to protect their privacy(隐私). This makes people in the East wear masks more often when epidemics break out(爆发).

But as the number of COVID-19 cases keeps on growing around the world, people in the West are changing. Many healthy people are starting to wear masks now to protect themselves.

Smashed cucumber (拍黄瓜)salad is one of the most popular cold dishes in China. You can find the green dish anywhere from restaurants to homes.

Ways to be a great tourist

Smile and have fun.

This is the most important when you are on holiday. Leave your problems at home. It is free to smile. Have fun, and this is why you come here.

Ask questions.

Don't just sit there and wonder about things. Ask your guide.

We know you are on holiday and everybody wants to have fun stay up a bit late and have a few extra beers but please don't always be the last one on the coach. Your guide and fellow travellers won't be happy if they have to sit on the coach waiting for the one who is always late.

  Some countries are at war, some countries have a president you don't like and some countries do things in a different way than you are used to. Be open-minded about these things and get along well with your fellow travellers.

Reduce your waste.

Waste management can be a major issue when we are travelling and we as travellers often unknowingly pollute the environment.       For example, say no to plastic bags from shops. Instead, put your items in a backpack or a cloth bag.
 

Online shopping, mobile payment and bike-sharing have left a deep impression on the 26-year-old Japanese man Haruki. He decided to write a book to share his 19-year e of living in China with the people of his country.

Haruki was b in Tokyo, Japan in 1995, and graduated from Xiamen University in 2019. Then he went back to Japan to work. He found many Japanese knew little about China and r it was necessary to open a window for the Japanese to understand the changes in China, so he decided to write a book to give the true information of China to the Japanese people.

He recalled that when his Japanese friends came to China to travel, they were surprised to see that bike-sharing was p in China. And people didn't take cash out to shop. I , they used digital w, such as Wechat Pay and Alipay.

The book was published in 2021. He hopes his book can provide Japanese readers with a look at the real China.

These days it's common for you to get a pop-up which lets you (put) the App in "teen mode (模式)" every time you begin to use Apps like QQ or Tiktok? A lot of Apps, especially video Apps, have added this feature (功能) to protect teenagers. It's said that it will bring teenagers (good) experiences than before and make sure they're using the Apps in a healthier way. For example, Apps like Tiktok have the feature to prevent teenagers from watching videos for long and with the feature, they might only be allowed (watch) for 40 minutes. The videos that teenagers can watch are made sure to be safe and even educational. There are no advertisements and teenagers cannot pay any m for the videos. In QQ's teen mode, teenagers can only talk to people on their contact lists. (they) chat records show pinyin, which is useful for primary school students.

However, the teen mode does not work for all Apps, a to a recent report by the National Consumer Council. There aren't any (different) between the teen mode and the normal mode in some Apps. And in some video Apps, the teen mode won't start users watch videos for 40 minutes. But users can get past it b clicking (点击) " I know " and continue watching.

Though you can learn a lot from short videos, it's n to control the time.
