A kind of little cars may some day take the place of today's cars. If everyone drives such cars in the future, there will be less pollution. There will also be more space for parking cars in cities, and the streets will be less crowded. Three such cars can fit in the space now needed for one car of the usual size.
The little cars will cost much less to own and to drive. Driving will be safer too, as these little cars can go only 65 kilometres an hour. The cars of the future will be fine for getting around a city, but they will not be useful for long trips. Little cars will go 450 kilometres before needing to stop for more gas (汽油).
If big cars are still used along with the small ones, two sets of roads will be needed in the future. Some roads will be used for the big, fast cars and other roads will be needed for the slower, small ones.
It's been nearly 40 years since I became a member of the navy (海军). You may be wondering how I have won so many honors as a commander-in-chief (最高统帅). In fact, it all began from the half a year's basic training, which I will never forget. The training included midnight swims in the cold water, days without 1 and long painful runs in the soft sand. I always felt cold, wet, hungry and painful.
The training also needed to find those who could 2 in an environment of stress, mess, failure and hardships. To me, the basic training was a lifetime of challenges that lasted six months.
And today, I'd like to talk about one little thing.
Every morning in the training, my instructors (教官) would appear in our rooms. The first thing they did was to 3 our beds. The corners would be square if we did it right. The covers would be pulled tight, and the pillow would be centered just under the headboard.
It was a difficult task. But every morning we were required to make our beds 4. It seemed a little funny, but the wisdom of this simple act has been proved to me many times over.
If you make your bed every morning, you will have completed the first task of the day. It will bring you a small 5 of success, and it will encourage you to do another task, and another and another. And by the end of the day, one task completed will have turned into many tasks completed.
Making your bed will prove the fact. If you can't do the 6 things right, you will hardly be able to do the big things right.
Changing the world can happen anywhere and anyone can do it. I can make sure that it doesn't matter whether I ever 7 a day in uniform (制服,军服). Even now, I still start my day with making the bed to perfection. So if you have an awful day by accident, you will come home to a bed that is made—that you made—and a made bed gives you encouragement that tomorrow will be better.
In general, if you want to change the world, 8 off by making your bed. I hope all of you will have a brighter future!
Good morning everybody! I am very glad to stand here to share my topic.
When preparing for this topic, I just want to search some articles and copy them down. I read a lot of articles, some from the university teachers, some from the famous stars, and even from the students of my age. But after reading them, I gave up the idea, I even felt shameful. Because the topic I want to talk about today is a serious topic full of pride.
We know that our country is full of sunshine, and we are the future of our country. So my dream is to be the hope of our motherland. I don't want to talk about big events (大 事), I just want to call on young people to show the side of courage, good and confidence. We must learn to develop our own thoughts, correct the wrong ones and change our direction to the right side in future life. We should try our best to make our Chinese Dream come true.
Perhaps the strength (力量) of a person is small, but when he is connected with the motherland, he will be a big hero. Perhaps a dream is tiny, but when it becomes the dream of a country, it will be huge. Perhaps I can't change our country on my own, but if thousands and thousands of young people work for the dream together, our motherland will be stronger and stronger.
I'm looking forward to realizing our Chinese Dream with all of the young people. Thank you for listening. That's all.
My friends and I joined a two-day survival(生存)training class in the mountains. The first day was really1, there was so much to do! Arriving at the campsite, we were divided into two groups and given a tent, some food, a 2and a compass. Standing next to a small river, Fanny suggested camping in the grassy area nearby. However, our instructor, Mr. Lee, pointed out that it might flood (淹没)if it rained. In the end, we found a3 area. Putting up the tent was really hard. Luckily, Mr. Lee helped us a lot.
By the time we had put up the tent, everyone was really hungry. "We wouldn't have got hungry if we had brought some snacks," Peter said. We all told him to4complaining and help us start a fire to cook our food instead.
The next day, woken by a strange noise, Peter went to see what was5." Some cows have eaten out breakfast." he shouted "That's all because you didn't 6the food properly last night." We tried our best on next7—using the map and compass to get success.
The survival training was a great experience in our life, we could survive anywhere!
What is the population of China? There are more than a billion and three hundred million people in China. It is almost one fifth of the world's population. How to control the population growth is a big problem. Some people think 1 control the population growth. But I don't agree 2 them, because where there's a will, there is a way.
The question is that we should make it 3 how serious the population problem is. Our farmland is becoming less and less to everyone. We have already got too many mouths to feed. 4 we control the population growth, many people will die 5 hunger. Too fast population growth has been and will be bad for our nation. Though laws(法律) have been 6 to control the population growth, in some places 7 is done to carry out the law. We should make people 8 that it is foolish to bring too many children into the world. They should9do what they have been doing for many years.
We are fighting against the rapid population growth. Yes, the fighting won't end10everyone knows its importance and does something for it. Let's go on working hard on it together.
As everyone knows, animals are our friends. Of all the animals, we find that dogs are friendly to1.
Dogs are always staying2human beings. They are in different colours and3. There are many different kinds of dogs too. Hunting dogs can4people get more prey (猎物). The seeing-eye dogs can help 5people a lot. The police dogs can help the police.
Today it is6to imagine life without dogs. Maybe everyone is happy to see dogs. Dogs are good at7and smelling. Some dogs can find the people who are trapped (困) 8the broken houses. Some dogs can help take care of the houses of their owners (主人).9someone strange comes close to the house, they will bark to frighten (吓唬) him. Even some dogs can help look after small kids when their10are not at home.
In a word, dogs are our best friends among all animals.
BookCrossing is the act of passing a book on all over the world. That is, the world becomes a big library. Lovers of the same book can share the book and their ideas about it. You can visit the BookCrossing website and get an ID label(标签) for the book you want to share. After labeling it, you can pass the book on by leaving it in a public place, for example, on a park bench or in a coffee shop. When someone finds your book and is interested in it, he will take it, and then he can visit BookCrossing website and enter the ID of the book to show someone has taken it. So when you go home and check the website, you'll know who is reading it. What's more, you can talk on the website about your book with those people.
Who first started BookCrossing? It was Ron Hornbaker. He thought of the idea in March 2001 and set up the website in April 2001. Now there are more than
1.9 million BookCrossers and over 13 million books traveling in 132 countries.
Do you want your books to get out and touch the lives of others? Try Book Crossing. You will find it fun and exciting to "follow" your books as they travel around the world.
A. Luoyang shovel(铲) —This tool was invented in China. It has a half-cylindrical(半圆形的) shape with the help of an extended rod(延长杆) and an attached rope. Archaeologists(考古学家) shove it in the ground and then pull it up to do some surveys.
B. Brushes—To avoid breaking artifacts while excavating, great care must be taken. A variety of brushes are used to remove the dirt from around the artifacts. Stiff brushes are used to remove larger material, while softer ones help remove finer material.
C. Drones—They can take pictures and videos of a whole site, which is quite useful in many ways. Before digging, it gives a wider view of a whole site and allows archaeologists to see things clearly from ground level. during the digging process, it can take low-altitude(低空的) and vertical(垂直的) shots quickly, which makes it easier to map the remains later.
D. Compasses—Archaeologists usually work in the wild. They use a compass to tell direction.
E. Tape measure—Tape measures are used to make sure that the size of each unit in a dig site and the depth of each level are as exact as possible.
F. Watering cans—When the ground is dry, it's hard to draw line in the soil to create units. Archaeologists use watering cans to sprinkle(喷洒)water on the ground to keep the soil wet.
Anny works in a remote(偏远的) and wild site. She has no sense of direction and easily loses her way back.
Jack wants to collect soil samples(样本) to make some surveys so that he can see if there are tombs underground.
In an archaeological site, Tony found an ancient bowl covered with thick mud. He wanted to clean it carefully.
While digging, Steven found that the soil was too dry to dig.
After five hours of working, a knife which was made in Tan Dynasty was found at last. Carl wondered to know its size.
If we want to grow as people, we can't just depend on our own evaluation (评价) of how we're doing. We also need to know what other people think about our performance. Receiving feedback (反馈) from others can help us see the larger picture and show us a way forward to success. However, someone has to give that feedback, and sometimes, that someone will be you. How should you deal with this?
First things first—if you notice a situation in which some feedback would be helpful, give it as soon as you can. If you wait until the matter disappears from the person's mind. they might not understand what you're trying to tell them. Take the person to a safe, comfortable place and offer your advice in private.
When you're giving feedback, it's important to keep in mind that no one likes to be told they're doing a bad job. Make sure you give an equal (相等的) amount of good feedback to balance out (平衡) anything bad. Like the saying goes, "A spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down.
All good feedback shares something in common. First, it should help achieve a goal. It's less useful to tell your friends that their dish tastes "interesting" than it is to suggest adding a little salt. Feedback should also look toward the future. You can't change what's already happened, but you can prevent it from happening again. Tell your friends they should take more notes in class instead of talking about how they should have studied harder for the big history exam they failed.
Finally, don't think your suggestion is the only correct way to deal with a situation. You might even end up with some feedback on your feedback. Don't take it personally--it can only help you give better advice next time

Many studies worldwide show that girls have more friendships than boys. In fact, many teenage boys can't name a single best friend. When they, they often think for a while before answering, "My best friend? I can't that. I am busy with my homework, and I have so many different friends that it is hard to choose just one best friend."
Girls, however, can usually answer the question , "A best friend? Of course. We have a lot to share with each other. We get much more from talking, daydreaming."
We have to realize: boys share activities, while girls share feelings. The qualities (品质) that boys and girls consider important in a friend seem to be the same, regardless of (无论) the basis of these friendships. The important thing to remember is that both of them are friendships. We all need friends in our lives.
INTRODUCTION It's hard to believe that I wrote Number the Stars more than twenty years ago. It seems like yesterday that I answered the phone on a snowy January morning and received the news that it had won the 1990 Newbery Medal(美国纽伯瑞儿童文学奖). I think readers of every age may match themselves with the important persons in the books they love and ask themselves: Would I have done that? What choice would I have made? And ten-the age of Annemarie in Number the Stars-is an age when young people are beginning to develop a strong set of personal ethics(道德观;价值观). …They are beginning to realize that the world they live in is not always good and safe. So they follow a story about a ten-year-old girl who is caught in a dangerous situation, and she must make decisions. Young readers become cheerful when Annemarie takes a deep breath, enters the woods, faces the danger, stands up to the enemy and wins her victory. Today, the book has been published in many countries and translated into many languages. It found its way into the hands and hearts of children who had read about but never experienced war… Books do change lives, I know; and many readers have told me that Number the Stars changed theirs when they were young, that it made them think about both. Cruelty (残酷;残忍) and courage. "It was something that shaped my idea of how people should be treated, "wrote a young woman recently, telling me about her own fourth-grade experience with the book. The Danish friend who first told me the story of her childhood, and who became the Annemarie in my book, is an old woman now. So am I. We both love thinking of the children reading the story today, coming to it for the first time and realizing that once, for a short time and in a small place, a group of prejudice-free (不存偏见的) people created a touching story of love and kindness towards others. My Dad
He comes home, has a shower,
And eats dinner, every day.
Now he is sitting in his favorite chair,
Too tired to laugh or play.
He reads his book or newspaper,
To learn what is new today.
Soon he will go to bed.
He is a boring man, my dad.
Then I see him working,
On the building site.
He is high up in the clouds, higher than a kite.
He is walking bravely on a narrow piece of wood,
Not afraid, not afraid like me.
He is a superman, my dad.

A famous designer(设计师)and a university student produce a new cup called Vessyl. They have spent several years1it. The smart cup can not only tell Coca Cola from Pepsi Cola,2also tell people whether they should drink water or not.
When people3liquid(液体)into this smart cup, a few seconds(秒)later, it can check this kind of liquid and tell them what it is. "My partner and I want people to7healthy. In modern society, people are usually8busy to do exercise, or even drink enough water every day. They have much9. We produce this smart cup so that people can make a choice10," the designer said.
Gardening is popular in many parts of the world. It brings us sweet smelling flowers, fresh fruit and different vegetables. But you can get more from your garden.
Gardening helps to keep healthy. Today's people sit indoors for too long and don't get much exercise. When you garden, you have to move around. It's a good chance for you to exercise your body by watering flowers or doing some digging. Besides, when you are in your garden, you can feel the warm sunshine. This means you are getting Vitamin D. It helps your bodies use calcium(钙), which is necessary to keep your bones (骨骼) strong. Gardening can also help us to understand the meaning of "No pains, no gains."
Gardening is a great way of meeting people. And it's also a good way of building relationships. Most people love to talk about their hobbies, and so do gardeners. And most enjoy sharing advice and stories about their gardens.

You are watching a film in which two men are having a fight. They hit one another hard. At the start they only fight with their fists. But soon they begin hitting one another over the heads with chairs. And so it goes on until one of the men crashes through a window and falls thirty feet to the ground below. He is dead!
Of course he isn't really dead. With any luck he isn't even hurt. Why? Because the men who fall out of high windows or jump from fast moving trains, who crash cars or even catch fire, are professionals. They do this for a living. These men are called stuntmen. That is to say, they perform tricks.
There are two sides to their work. They actually do most of the things you see on the screen. For example, they fall from a high building. However, they do not fall on to hard ground but on to empty cardboard boxes covered with a mattress (床垫). Again, when they hit one another with chairs, the chairs are made of soft wood and when they crash through windows, the glass is made of sugar! Although their work depends on trick of this kind, it also requires a high degree of skill and training. Often a stuntman's success depends on careful timing. For example, when he is "blown up" in a battle scene, he has to jump out of the way of the explosion just at the right moment.
Naturally stuntmen are well paid for their work, but they lead dangerous lives. They often get badly injured, and sometimes killed. A Norwegian stuntman, for example, skied over the edge of a cliff (悬崖) a thousand feet high. His parachute (降落伞) failed to open, and he was killed. In spite of all the risks, this is no longer a profession for men only. Men no longer dress up as women when actresses have to perform some dangerous action. For nowadays there are stuntwomen, too!
After a terrible experience, most survivors(幸存者) can be expected to recover over time, particularly with the support of family and friends. Some families will be able to return to their normal life quickly, while children will need time to recover from the loss of a loved one or a pet or from the closing down of their school.
Children often turn to adults for information, comfort and help. Parents should try to remain calm, answer children's questions honestly and remain understanding when they see changes in their children's behavior.
Children react(反应) differently depending on their ages and former experiences. Some will keep silent, while others will have bad dreams. Parents should watch each child's reactions, spend time talking, letting them know that it's OK to ask questions and to share their worries. Although it may be hard to find time to have these talks, parents can use regular family mealtimes or bedtimes for them. They should answer questions honestly and ask their children for their opinions and ideas. Issues may come up more than once and parents should remain patient when you answer the questions again. For young children, parents, after talking, might read a favorite story or have a family activity to help them calm down. Parents should also tell children they are safe and spend more time with them. They could play games outside or read together indoors. Most importantly, be sure to tell them you love them.
Shyness means feeling afraid when other people are around you. Some children were shy when they were born. Some become very shy later because of their life experiences. In fact, everybody gets shy sometimes. It is just how much they feel shy. Most people have red faces and talk in broken sentences when they are shy. Some won, t go to a restaurant because they are too nervous to order and pay for their food. Some are afraid of meeting new people, so they seldom go outside. This kind of shyness can be bad for a person.
If shyness doesn't stop you from doing what you want to do, being shy isn't a big problem. Some experts say shy people are good at working because they think more and talk less. But remember not to let good opportunities pass you by just because of shyness. If you have to sing a song at a birthday party or give some performances in front of others, just do it. There, s nothing for you to be afraid of.
