This could be the perfect gift for the partner, who embarrasses you on the dance floor. Smart socks, which can teach to dance, may be the answer for anyone with two left feet.
The socks have been developed as a running tool to help runners improve their skills. Thanks to the socks, users can accurately record not only how far and fast they run but also how well. It means the user maximizes their performance, and reduces damage to body and prevents hurt. The hi-tech socks are made of special fibers that watch the movements of your feet. They look, feel and can be washed like normal clothes.
Sensors record each movement and send it by an ankle transmitter(脚踝发射器) to a smartphone. Then a "virtual coach" application shows the information and can tell the user what they are doing wrong, and help to improve skill in any task with feet.
The socks should be useful to athletes and weekend joggers. "People think running is so easy and of course everybody can do it but not necessarily safely and well," Dr. Davide Vigano said. A recent study showed that between 60 and 80 percent of runners got hurt per year. This is pretty much more than any other human activity. Researchers say the technology can also be developed to teach people how to dance, play sports such as golf, or even to help to teach women to walk better in high heels.
Mr. Vigano said, "People could all benefit from the idea. We have had interest from all sorts of sports, like skiing, football, cycling and golf. Anything where you have to use your feet can use it. It could even be put in high heels to help women walk in them safely. "
Socks are just the start, and the technology could be used in gloves, hats and boots. The socks, anklet and software package, are expected to be sold for around £120, which will go on sale in March.
Dogs are considered by many to be man's best friend and with millions of dogs owned by families in the US, it is highly likely that many dogs are in need of some amount of training. Since dogs can hear sounds at much higher frequencies (频率) than humans, there is a wonderful tool for the training of a dog. It is an app (应用程序) called the Dog Whistle. This isn't your typical whistle in that it produces sounds at a frequency that is unable to be heard by humans. This unique app will allow you to train your dog without the need of a dog whistle.
The Dog Whistle free app was created by an app developer Maoli Wang specifically for dog owners who are looking for a way to communicate with their dogs in order to be able to either train them or alert (使警觉) them when the noise around is too great for them to hear you call them. By simply fixing the app on your iPhone, it will immediately turn itself into a dog whistle.
The app includes a very powerful system that is able to create different tones ranging from 16,000 to 40,000 Hz in order for a dog to be able to hear it. The app also has an on-screen sound meter in order for the user to monitor the sound level being produced. In that way, they can decide on which frequency works best for their dog. What's more, the app easily produces the requested tones at the frequencies necessary to be used to communicate with your dog by simply tapping the screen of your phone.
The app was designed to be used in place of a dog whistle in order to get your dogs attention when it is too noisy around them. The sound produced through the app is at a level that only dogs are able to hear and they will respond to the sound. If you own a dog and are having behavioral issues with them, you would surely benefit from the Dog Whistle free app available by clicking here.
Whenever the sun dropped and the blue sky came up, my father and I used to climb the mountain near my house. Walking together, my father and I used to have a lot of conversations through which I learned lessons from his experiences. He always told me, "You should have goals like climbing the mountain." Without the mountain-climbing that we both enjoyed, we couldn't have enough time to spend together because my father was very busy. I really got a lot from the mountain-climbing. It gave me time to talk with my father and to be in deep thought as well as develop my patience.
Once we climbed a very high mountain. It was so challenging for me because I was only ten years old. During the first few hours of climbing, I enjoyed the flowers and trees, and the birds' singing. But as time passed, I got a pain in both of my legs. I wanted to quit climbing, but my father said to me, "You can always see a beautiful sky at the top of the mountain, but you can't see it before you reach the top. Only there can you see all of the nice things, which is just like your life."
At that time, I was too young to understand his words. But later after that, I got to know the meaning of hope in life. I found myself standing at the top of the mountain, and the sky was as clear as crystal.
It warmed my heart today to walk into the Thirsty Camel downtown in the Thanksgiving Day, for a quick lunch before a haircut and library trip. Ihan, a food shop owner, said that he was refusing to take money today because it was Buy Nothing Day. To increase awareness(意识) of the strange's over-spending nature of our society, Ilan suggested a trade for food today. He simply asked that you offer something of equal personal value for the meal you received.
At first I was really uncomfortable, wondering if it would be fair to exchange a yet to be determined "I Owe You" (IOU) for food? What could I give him of equal value? After all, his food is the best in the town!
We ended up writing our IOU's with promises of a book, some paintings and the offer of work in a variety of ways if he needs it.
I think the idea isn't that the trade is "equal" so much as the importance of the kind of transaction. We put thought into our offer and we had an even greater understanding for the meals we ate.
We don't buy a lot, especially at this upcoming time of year. We don't give gifts at all in fact. The holiday time is spent enjoying each other's company and doing things together with family and friends. This is what seems most sensible.
Ilan is a good person. We are all lucky to have someone like this in our community.
The Israeli farmers who pioneered the revolutionary technology known as drip irrigation (滴流灌溉) weren't trying to solve one of the world's most urgent problems. They were just trying to survive. They lived in the desert, and they didn't have enough water to grow their crops.
In its simplest form, it was little more than a pipe with holes in it. But behind each hole was a hi-tech dripper that let out just the right amount of water. Snaked along a row of crops so that the holes were positioned directly above the roots, the pipe could direct each precious drop of water directly to the plants, getting a bigger harvest while using a very small amount of water.
Over time, the farmers improved upon the technology, perfecting the drippers that regulated the flow of water, and connecting the pipelines to computers that could determine exactly how much water each plant needed and when.
If the global population kept growing, the rest of the world would increasingly resemble their little community in the desert. So they began selling their irrigation systems in other parts of the world, eventually expanding to more than 110 countries. Netafirm, the company says it's lifting people out of poverty and conserving water at a time when the importance of doing so has never been clearer.
The mass adoption of drip irrigation won't save the world by itself. To avoid the coming catastrophe, nearly everybody will, in some way, have to do more with less, perhaps through accepting and using other new technologies. Otherwise, it's going to get ugly.
Drivers who drive a little too close to cyclists on the road could soon be caught on the spot. A new technology adopted by legal departments in Ottawa could help carry out legal distance between bikers and cars on the road.
The device, which is fixed on a bicycle's handlebars like a bike bell, uses sonar(声呐) technology to measure the distance between the bike and passing cars. The device will make a loud noise if the car is within one meter of the bike, the legal limit in the city of Ottawa, allowing the police rider to radio ahead to his colleagues so that the driver can be pulled over. "The safety of all road users is extremely vital, including cyclists. These cycling changes are directed at encouraging cycling, promoting road safety, and sharing the road," said Rob Wilkinson, coordinator of the Safer Roads Ottawa Program.
The authorities started the program last week with a single sonar device. One police officer rode the bike bearing the device around the city on Tuesday to prove the effectiveness(有效性) of the technology. Within a few minutes of riding, the device was beeping, registering that two drivers had violated the one-meter distance requirement. The drivers were pulled over and given brochures informing them that they had broken the safe distance law.
Wilkinson noted that the device is not currently being used to issue fines, which can go up to $110, and that there are no plans to use it for enforcement(执法)in the future. At this point, its main use is to spread awareness about the safe distance law, which was passed last September in an effort to encourage rider safety and reduce deadly crashes.
When school closes, poor pupils lose the last social institution-one that educates, feeds, and sometimes clothes them-whereas richer pupils are gaining relatively more advantages. Disruptions to schooling tend to lower achievement while increasing inequality.
A new industry of"Learning Pod", where a group of families pool cash to pay for an in-person tutor, is deepening that inequality. Scoot Education, whose normal business is providing substitute teachers for schools, quickly developed a sideline in learning pods in California. For younger pupils, the total cost of a pod, shared among all parents, is $349 a day, which is beyond what a poor family can afford."Rich families can always find a way to educate their children, even if COVID-19 pandemic had not started," says Sarah Cohodes, a professor at Teachers College at Columbia University.
Thus, if there would be no extraordinary interventions in the closing of schools, the long-run effects on those poor students are predictable.
A team of five education scholars recently calculated that American schoolchildren in 2020 learned 30% less reading and 50%less maths than they would in a typical year. Despite that, the top third of pupils posted gains in reading. Data from Opportunity Insights, an economic-research team at Harvard University, shows that after lockdowns began in March pupils from low-income neighbourhoods fell permanently behind on online maths coursework, while those from richer areas quickly rebounded.
Then there is the problem of access to online classes. Nearly half of native American pupils and 35% of black and Hispanic ones do not have access to either a computer or the internet at home, compared with 19%of whites. Worsening mental health among poorer families will also hurt achievement. Elizabeth Ananat of Barnard College and Anna Gassman-Pines of Duke University surveyed part-time workers in Philadelphia who had young children; half were showing their anxiety or depression for children's schooling.

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, or UNESCO, meets each year to choose the latest additions to its World Heritage list. Today, let's have a quick look at some of the latest additions.
Ruins of Liangzhu City(China)
The ruins of Liangzhu stand for an early state with a collective (集体的) belief system based on rice growing, dating from 3,300 to 2,300 BC. The ruins, UNESCO says, are a "good example of one of the earliest urban civilizations (文明)" They also include a water conservation (保护) system and different kinds of burying grounds.
Jaipur City(India)
Also known as the Pink City, Jaipur is an amazing achievement in urban planning and building. Founded in 1727, it is now recognizable for its large public squares, palaces, markets and pink buildings. UNESCO says Jaipur's urban planning shows an "exchange of ideas from ancient Hindu as well as modern Mughal and Western cultures".
Architecture (建筑) of Frank Lloyd Wright(United States)
UNESCO also recognized the work of famous American architect Frank Lloyd Wright. The group added eight of his buildings to the World Heritage list. They include the Guggenheim Museum in New York City, Hollyhock House in Los Angeles, California and Unity Temple in Chicago, Illinois. The World Heritage Committee said in a statement that Wright's work "had a strong influence on the development of modern architecture in Europe". The Guggenheim is Wright's most famous building. It was completed in 1959, the same year Wright died.
Holidaymakers planning to hit the beach in Ibiza this summer will need to wear face masks even when they're sunbathing on the beach.
Previously, the Balearic Island had exempt (免除) sun-seekers from wearing face masks on beaches, provided they were social distancing. However, new rules have come into force from the Spanish central government which will make mask-wearing compulsory for anyone visiting outdoor public spaces - including beaches and pools. The new face mask policy also applies regardless of whether there is social distancing in place (1. 5m in Spain); so someone who is lying on a towel sunbathing away from others will still be required to wear a face mask. Those who break the rules could face fines of up to €100.
There will be some exemptions such as children who are under six, and adults with illnesses that could cause them breathing difficulties.
The decision comes as Spain has been noting a gradual rise in Covid-19 cases. And it's not just Ibiza which will be affected - the new rules will be enforced in the Canary Islands and mainland Spain too, including popular tourist destinations such as Costa del Sol.
However, the Balearic Islands government is protesting against the new rules, arguing that the regulations could put people off holidays especially during the hot summer months. Earlier this month Spain ended a travel ban for British people, which had been in place since December due to a mutant strain of coronavirus (冠状病毒的突变株) found in the UK. It's hoped that some international travel could begin again from May.
What do you think of Spain's new face mask rules? Let us know in the comments below.
Once called "the bridge that couldn't be built," today it is one the seven wonders of the modern world. This magnificent span, perhaps San Francisco's most famous landmark, opened in 1937 after a four-year struggle against non-stop winds, fog, rock and treacherous tides.
The world-famous Golden Gate Bridge is easily recognized by its International Orange color. The bridge was built at a cost of $35 million in principal and $39 million in interest and 11 workers' lives. The bridge, with its twin towers reaching skyward 746 feet, was once taller than any building in San Francisco. It took more than 10 years to make a plan due to powerful opposition, but only four years in actual construction, the Golden Gate Bridge brought the communities of San Francisco and Marin counties closer together.
Pedestrians (行人) including wheelchair users and bicyclists can go on the sidewalks of the bridge during daylight hours but skateboards and roller skates are not permitted.
If you can't visit the bridge in person, do the virtual bridge walk and don't forget to check out the view from the top of the south tower.
If interested in biking across the bridge, the Presidio offers bike rentals and electric bike share opportunities, plus a recommended bike path through Crissy Field. For more information, visit the Presidio online.
If you are planning to stay in San Francisco, there are plenty of hotels nearby or with views of the Golden Gate Bridge.
My challenge for you is this: to read a book for 15 minutes every single day for a month.
Let me explain a bit, by telling you where the challenge came from. I have many things in common with my dad, like music taste and sense of humor, but sadly reading isn't one of them. I can happily spend a whole day with a book, but my dad can't read a book for longer than about 5 minutes. He reads emails, websites and papers for work, but not books. He's busy, so I think sitting down to read for just 15 minutes a day is a good way to relax and to introduce him to reading.
My dad is not the only person who avoids books. I know lots of people would rather relax on their computers or in front of the TV. Everyone is different and has their own interests, but I think there are lots of benefits to reading, which screen-based activities don't have.
Firstly, it's better for your eyes. Looking at screens can be very stressful for your eye muscles, and clearly you should avoid looking at screens for an hour before bed, to get a good night's sleep.
One thing I personally love reading, is being transported to another world—I would often forget the time or things around me! Reading is a great way to switch off before you go to bed, because you think more about the world of the book, rather than the real world, so you can truly relax. I know you can be transported to a different world in a film or a TV show, but I think books do it better.
I also enjoy hearing what people are doing and finding out what they think. Reading gives me the chance to get to know hundreds of new people! It also teaches you to see things from other people's point of view, and understand other people's decisions or opinions. With a book, you can hear everything a character is thinking or feeling—you really can be inside someone else's head!
So give it a go! Take 15 minutes when you are waking up, going to bed, eating lunch, or having a coffee. If you read a lot, why not try 15 minutes of an English book, or pass the challenge on to someone else? Good luck, and happy reading!
The way of greeting someone comes in different forms. Kissing and hugging are normal in some European and Arab countries. Maoris in New Zealand greet each other by rubbing against their noses. However, the most common physical way of greeting people nowadays is handshake. It has become so ubiquitous that you may never have thought about its origins. It's like a part of human nature.
The modern handshake as a form of greeting is hard to trace. The Quakers are traditionally seen as originators. But as Dutch sociologist Herman Roodenburg——the chief authority for the history of handshaking一wrote in his publication A Cultural History of Gesture, "More than in any other field, the study of gesture is one in which the historian has to make the most of only a few clues. " Another well-known evidence of the early tradition of shaking hands took place in the early 17th century. A Scotsman living in England, named James Cleland, suggested that the practice of the u good old Scottish shaking of the two right hands" should be observed, instead of things like bowing down to everyone's shoes and kissing hands.
If you ask why shaking hands is the most preferred way of greeting over other gestures, the most well-known explanation is that handshaking prevents the right hand from holding a weapon. In the 19th century it was argued that shaking hands without removing gloves was quite rude and required an immediate apology.
Shaking hands seems like a gesture that has been around forever. However, in 1880's France, a society had been formed to abolish the handshake as a ''vulgar" English novelty. And now in the US that gesture may fall away in favor of the fist hump. While the fist bump is a cooler way to greet someone, the reason may have been more practical. According to survey participants, they did not want to shake hands because they were afraid of catching and spreading bacteria.
Founded in 1966, Seacamp, the first program dedicated to(致力 于)the education of youth in marine(海洋的)sciences, is the result of a cooperative effort of parents, scientists, businessmen and camp leaders. Preservation practices and a respect for the marine environment are the philosophy of the Seacamp.
Seacamp's tropical(热带的)marine location in the lower Florida Keys enables it to offer a truly unique marine science program. This program is the heart of Seacamp. Young scientists participate in a variety of courses under the guidance of academically trained marine science instructors and biologists. All science activities include studies in both the field and the laboratory. Each session, 140 to 160 campers come to Seacamp, mostly from the US, but also from across the world. There are about 30 international campers each summer from an average of twelve countries. Many Seacamp program graduates have gone on to careers as environmental educators and marine scientists.
One of Seacamp's unique aspects is that campers create their schedules. In addition to science classes, campers choose from a variety of programs to ensure that there is something interesting and exciting for everyone. Campers interested in journlism may work on the camp newspaper, SEASCOPE, which is published periodically during camp sessions. Arts activities are also included. Photography allows campers to take home memories of friends, wildlife, and underwater experiences.
Seacamp teaches the fun and skills of sailing. It's an excellent way for future marine scientists to become familiar with the winds, tides and currents that are of primary concern in oceanography. Basic Red Cross certification is offered to beginners in sailing. The Red Cross course in advanced lifesaving is taught at Seacamp. The course is designed to increase the campers' ability to recognize and avoid dangerous water conditions and practices and to use self-rescue skills to get out of dangerous situations.
Parents may bring campers by car to Big Pine Key. Counselors(顾问)also meet participants at the Miami International Airport on the opening day of camp and accompany them to Big Pine Key on a bus. The fee for roundtrip service is $ 90. To join the Seacamp adventure, interested campers should contact Seacamp for an application.
We love to talk about camp! For more information or to ask any questions you might have, please give our friendly staff call and we'll be glad to help!

Physical education, or PE, isn't required for all high school students. In some schools, it isn't offered for different reasons. But should high school students receive physical education? The answer is certainly "Yes."
Today many people don't do sports. But as is known to all, doing sports is very important for an adult. Teaching teens the importance of a healthy lifestyle and making fitness plans now can help teens put exercise in the first place as an adult.
The American Heart Association says that 10 million kids and teens suffer from being fat. The increase in activities that don't get teens to move around, such as computer games, means many teens don't get their required exercise. PE classes act as a public health measure to encourage physical activities and help teens have healthy weights.
Not doing sports increases teens' risk of developing many diseases. An active lifestyle offers a good way of protection from these health problems. As much as 75 percent of health-care spending goes toward treating medical conditions that can be hindered by lifestyle changes, according to the American College of Sports Medicine.
According to the President's Council on Fitness, Sports and Nutrition (PCFSN), students who performed five hours of physical activity each week improved their academic performance. Students from programs with no physical activity, who used the extra time for classroom study, did not perform better on tests than those who gave up some study time in support of physical education.
