Can dogs and cats live in perfect harmony in the same home? People who are thinking about adopting a dog as a friend for their cats are worried that they will fight. A recent research has found a new recipe of success. According to the study, if the cat is adopted before the dog, and if they are introduced when still young (less than 6 months for cats, a year for dogs), it is highly probable that the two pets will get along swimmingly. Two-thirds of the homes interviewed reported a positive relationship between their cat and dog.

However, it wasn't all sweetness and light. There was a reported coldness between the cat and dog in 25% of the homes, while aggression and fighting were observed in 10% of the homes. One reason for this is probably that some of their body signals were just opposite. For example, when a cat turns its head away it signals aggression, while a dog doing the same signals submission.

In homes with cats and dogs living peacefully, researchers observed a surprising behaviour. They are learning how to talk each other's language. It is a surprise that cats can learn how to talk ‘Dog', and dogs can learn how to talk ‘Cat'.

What's interesting is that both cats and dogs have appeared to develop their intelligence. They can learn how to read each other's body signals, suggesting that the two may have more in common than we previously suspected. Once familiar with each other's presence and body language, cats and dogs can play together, greet each other nose to nose, and enjoy sleeping together on the sofa. They can easily share the same water bowl and in some cases groom (梳理) each other.

The significance of the research on cats and dogs may go beyond pets ─ to people who don't get along, including neighbors, colleagues at work, and even world superpowers. If cats and dogs can learn to get along, surely people have a good chance.

  1. (1) The underlined word "swimmingly" in Paragraph 1 is closest in meaning to ______.

A . They eat and sleep each other. B . They observe each other's behaviors. C . They learn to speak each other's language. D . They know something from each other's voices.
  4. (4) It is suggested in Paragraph 4 that cats and dogs ______.
A . have common interests B . are less different than was thought C . have a common body language D . are less intelligent than was expected
  5. (5) What can we human beings learn from cats and dogs?
A . We should learn to live in harmony. B . We should know more about animals. C . We should live in peace with animals. D . We should learn more body languages.

The practice of students endlessly copying letters and sentences from a blackboard is a thing of the past. With the coming of new technologies like computers and smart phone, writing by hand has become something of nostalgic(怀旧的) skill. However, while today's educators are using more and more technologies in their teaching, many believe basic handwriting skills are still necessary for students to be successful —both in school and in life. Virginia Berninger, professor of educational psychology at the University of Washington, says it's important to continue teaching handwriting and help children acquire the skill of writing by hand.

Berninger and her colleagues conducted a study that looked at the ability of students to complete various writing tasks—both on a computer and by hand. The study, published in 2009, found that when writing with a pen and paper, participants wrote longer essays and more complete senten3ces and had a faster word production rate.

In a more recent study, Berninger looked at what role spelling plays in a student's writing skills and found that how well children spell is tied to how well they can write. "Spelling makes some of the thinking parts of the brain active, which helps us access our vocabulary, word meanings and concepts. It is allowing our written language to connect with ideas." Berninger said.

Spelling helps students translate ideas into words in their mind first and then to transcribe (转换) "those words in the mind written symbols on paper or keyboard and screen," the study said. Seeing the words in the "minds eye" helps children not only to turn their ideas into words, says Berninger, but also to spot spelling mistakes when they write the words down and to correct them over time.

"In our computer age, some people believe that we don't have to teach spelling because we have spell checks," she said. "But until a child has a functional spelling ability of about a fifth grade level, they won't have the knowledge to choose the correct spelling among the options given by the computer."

  1. (1) What makes writing by hand a thing of the past?
A . The absence of blackboard in classroom. B . The use of new technologies in teaching. C . The lack of practice in handwriting. D . The popular use of smart phones.
  2. (2) Which of the following best shows the role of spelling?
A . Spelling improves one's memory of words. B . Spelling ability is closely related to writing ability. C . Spelling benefits the translation from words into ideas. D . Spelling slows down finding exact words to express ideas.
  3. (3) What does minds eye in paragraph 4 mean?
    A . Window. B . Soul. C . Picture. D . Imagination.
  4. (4) What conclusion could be drawn from the passage?
A . Computers can help people with their choice of words. B . Spell checks can take the place of spelling teaching. C . Handwriting still has a place in today's classrooms. D . Functional spelling ability develops fast in the fifth grade.

Almost everyone has heard the expression, "the calm before the storm". It is usually used to describe a peaceful period just before a very stressful situation or a tense argument.

British sailors coined the phrase in the late 1600s. They noted that before certain storms the seas would seem to become static(平静的) and the winds would drop. But why is it often so calm before a storm?

According to the US website How Stuff Works, a calm period occurs because many storms, tornadoes and hurricanes draw in all the warm and wet air from the surrounding area. As the air rises into the storm clouds, it cools and acts as "fuel for the storm, like petrol in a car". Once the storm has taken all the energy it can from the air, it is pushed out from the top of the storm clouds and falls back down to ground level. As the air goes down, it becomes warm and dry. Warm and dry air is stable, so once it covers an area, it causes a calm period before the storm.

This same process also causes the "eye of the storm" in hurricanes and tornadoes. In these conditions, the calm occurs in the center of the storm because of the strong circling winds.

The Weather Network has a tip for working out how far away a storm is, First count how many seconds there are between a flash of lightning and a clap of thunder, roughly three seconds equal one kilometer. So, for example, if you count nine seconds, the storm is about three kilometers away. A good judge is that if your count is below 30 seconds, you should seek shelter straight away.

However, due to the complexity of storm system, not all storms are proceeded (领先) by calm. Given the right conditions, some storms announce themselves with heavy rain and icy winds. So, your best bet is to keep yourself updated with weather reports for any predictions regarding a coming storm in your area. That's the most reliable and sensible way to predict the next display of nature's temper.

  1. (1) What does the 3rd paragraph mainly tell us?
A . How a storm comes into being. B . Why research is done on storm clouds. C . Why a peaceful period occurs before a storm. D . How dangerous a storm can be in certain situations.
  2. (2) How far away is the storm if you count 18 seconds between a lightning flash and a thunder clap?
    A . Three kilometers. B . Four kilometers. C . Five kilometers. D . Six kilometers.
  3. (3) What can we learn from the text?
A . Storms have a big influence on life. B . It is not always quiet before a storm. C . Weather reports may fail to predict a storm. D . Heavy storms don't usually last for a long time
  4. (4) Where is the text probably taken from?
    A . A science report. B . A weather report. C . A touring guide. D . An advertisement.

While the novel coronavirus is dangerous for everyone, it is particularly so for the first respond-ere who are being exposed to the illness daily. In the US alone, almost 5,500 nurses, doctors, and other healthcare professionals have been infected with COVID-19. Unfortunately, of these, dozens have succumbed to the disease. Now, hospital workers worldwide may get some relief thanks to Spot, a semi-autonomous four-legged robot developed by Waltham, Massachusetts-based robotics company, Boston Dynamics.

Starting in early March, Boston Dynamics started receiving inquiries from hospitals asking if our robots could help minimize their staff 's exposure to COVID-19,” the company writes in a blog post. In response, the company reconfigured (改装)the 3-foot tall robot to operate as a mobile telemedicine platform, enabling healthcare providers to determine a patient's condition remotely.

The first four-legged robot dog” was working in the Brigham and Women's Hospital of Harvard University on April 9, 2020. Equipped with an iPad “face” and a two-way radio that allows for real-time conversation, Spot helps doctors to speak to patients without coming in contact with them.

“With current practice at local hospitals, patients suspected to have COVID-19 are asked to line up in tents outside to answer questions and get initial assessments for temperature. This process requires up to five medical staff, placing those individuals at high risk of being exposed to the virus, Boston Dynamics explains. With the use of a mobile robot, hospitals are able to reduce the number of necessary medical staff at the scene and conserve their limited PPE (personal protective equipment) supply.” The company says the doctors can even use Spot to talk to patients from the safety of their own homes.

Though Spot has already proved extremely helpful, the robotics manufacturer believes it can be even more so. The engineers are currently working onteaching” the robot to perform tasks like temperature checks. The company is also developing new technology that will allow Spot to aid in the disinfection (消毒)of hospitals as well as other public areas.

There exist a number of advantages of wearing school uniforms. The idea may seem disagreeable at first, but considering all the positive effects coming from wearing uniforms you would be more likely to enjoy them.

Teachers love school uniforms because it helps provide an orderly learning environment. Having students dressed in uniforms may teach them how to present themselves in a neat and professional manner. It gives students the opportunity to learn how to dress like young ladies and gentleman. And they can focus their attention on academics rather than style.

Purchasing (购买) school uniforms is easy and needs less hesitation and consideration. No matter what the school's policy is, there are only few basic pieces to the clothes that are necessary, so it won't break the bank. A few wardrobe clothes can last a long time. Parents could also enjoy an easy morning, as it will take less time to choose a set of clothes for the school day.

Students wearing uniforms will feel less pressure about what to wear or not to wear when their classmates are dressed similarly. Getting dressed before school becomes less of a complex thing when students are limited in their choices, so there shouldn't be any trouble about choosing an outfit for the day and getting ready quickly. Some students may not like the lack of individuality (个性) with a uniform, but some school dress code policies may offer them the opportunities to show their unique styles.

As Internet users become more dependent on the Internet to store information, are people remembering less? If you know your computer will save information, why store it in your own personal memory, your brain? Experts are wondering if the Internet is changing what we remember and how.

In a recent study, Professor Betsy Sparrow conducted some experiments. She and her research team wanted to know the Internet is changing memory. In the first experiment, they gave people 40 unimportant facts to type into a computer. The first group of people understood that the computer would save the information. The second group understood that the computer would not save it. Later, the second group remembered the information better. People in the first group knew they could find the information again, so they did not try to remember it.

In another experiment, the researchers gave people facts to remember, and told them where to find the information on the Internet. The information was in a specific computer folder (文件夹). Surprisingly, people later remember the folder location better than the facts. When people use the Internet, they do not remember the information. Rather, they remember how to find it. This is called "transactive memory (交互记忆)"

According to Sparrow, we are not becoming people with poor memories as a result of the Internet. Instead, computer users are developing stronger transactive memories; that is, people are learning how to organize huge quantities of information so that they are able to access it at a later date. This doesn't mean we are becoming either more or less intelligent, but there is no doubt that the way we use memory is changing.

  1. (1) What can we learn about the first experiment?
A . Sparrow's team typed the information into a computer. B . The two groups remembered the information equally well. C . The first group did not try to remember the information. D . The second group did not understand the information.
  2. (2) In transactive memory, people ___.
A . keep the information in mind B . change the quantity of information C . organize information like a computer D . remember how to find the information
  3. (3) What is the effect of the Internet according to Sparrow's research?
A . We are using memory differently. B . We are becoming more intelligent. C . We have poorer memories than before. D . We need a better way to access information.

What you do after studying could have a big effect on how well you learn and remember. Today on Education Tips, we will explore two no-cost ways that can help you improve your learning: wakeful rest and sleep.

When many students finish studying, they often go straight to another activity. Perhaps they look at their phone or computer. They might even play a video game or watch television. But research suggests that resting after your study may help you remember what you have studied.

The basic idea is this: by stopping your activity after the study, your brain gets a chance to rest. Resting is difficult when you are playing computer games.

While this might sound unusual to you, many studies have explored the benefits of resting after learning—what is called "wakeful rest".

A 2019 study found that both young and older adults were able to better remember information they learned after doing wakeful rest.

If you want to give "wakeful rest" a try, here are a few simple things to do. Rest quietly for five to ten minutes. Do not look at your phone, read stories or play games. It is really that easy!

Besides wakeful rest, sleep is also important for learning. The Division of Sleep Medicine at Harvard Medical School (HMS) notes that sleep helps people to learn in two ways. A report on the school's website explains that "a sleep-deprived person cannot focus attention well and therefore cannot learn well". It also says, "Sleep itself helps us to memorize and that memorizing is very important for learning new information."

The National Sleep Foundation (NSF) suggests that adults between the ages of 20 and 64 get between 7 and 9 hours of sleep per day. Teenagers may need a little bit more, and people over the age of 65 may need a little less.

Try to get some "wakeful rest" after a study. Then try to get a good night's sleep. That's it—a simple, no-cost way to help you remember what you learn.

  1. (1) What is paragraph 3 mainly about?
A . The importance of sleep. B . The good ways to get a rest. C . The reason for having a rest. D . The types of resting activities.
  2. (2) Which activity might be recommended shortly after studying?
    A . Reading a newspaper. B . Playing a video game. C . Sitting there doing nothing. D . Having a nice sleep at night.
  3. (3) How long should teenagers sleep each day according to NSF?
    A . Less than 7 hours. B . Just 7 hours. C . No more than 9 hours. D . Around 9 hours.
  4. (4) What can be a suitable title for the text?
A . Low-cost Tips on Working B . Good Things to Do After Your Study C . Why Do We Need to Have a Good Sleep? D . How Long Should We Rest After Learning?

Human beings have used tools for a very long time. In some parts of the world you can still find tools that people used more than two million years ago. They made these tools by hitting one stone against another. In this way, they broke off pieces from one of the stones. These chips of stone were usually sharp on one side. People used them for cutting meat and skin from dead animals, and also for making other tools out of wood. Human beings needed to use tools because they did not have sharp teeth like other meat eating animals, such as lions and tigers. Tools helped people to get food more easily.

Working with tools also helped to develop human intelligence. The human brain grew bigger, and human beings began to invent more and more tools and machines. The stone chip was one of the first tools that people used, and perhaps it is the most important. Some scientists say that it was the key to success of mankind.

Since 1960 a new kind of tool has appeared. This is the silicon chip (硅芯片). It is smaller than a finger nail, but it can store lots of information. It is an electronic brain. Every year these chips get cleverer, but their size gets smaller, and their cost gets less. They are used in watches, calculators and intelligent machines that we can use in many ways. In the future we will not need to work with tools in the old way. Machines will do everything for us. People will have plenty of spare time. But what will they do with it?

Human beings used stone chips for more than two million years, but human life changed very little in that time. We have used silicon chips for only a few years, but life is changing faster every day. What will life be like twenty years from now? What will the world be like two million years from now?

  1. (1) From paragraph 1, we can know ________.
A . why early human beings cut skin from dead animals B . how early human beings discovered the tools C . what early human beings used the tools for D . what food early human beings stored
  2. (2) The stone chip is thought to be the most important tool because it ________.
A . was very important to the development of mankind B . led to the invention of machines in the early time C . developed cooking abilities of mankind D . was one of the first tools of mankind
  3. (3) The silicon chip is mentioned in the passage to ________.
A . show the changes of tools B . introduce a new kind of tool C . give an example of using tools D . compare the effects of two kinds of tools
  4. (4) At the end of the passage the author seems to suggest that life in future is ________.
    A . out of order B . less colorful C . hard to predict D . full of meanings

In 2016, China released guidelines forbidding weird(古怪的) construction, shifting their focus to the "economic, green and beautiful". Now a new plan certainly fits the bill—Liuzhou Forest City, designed by the Italian firm Stefano Boeri Architetti, will be under construction in southern China.

The 175hectare, selfcontained neighborhood will contain more than 70 buildings—including homes, hospitals, hotels, schools and offices—all of which will be covered with 40, 000 trees and almost a million plants. This is the first experiment of the urban environment that's really trying to find a balance with nature.

The idea behind the project is to combine as many plants with the architecture as possible. The plants are expected to absorb almost 10, 000 tons of carbon dioxide and 57 tons of pollutants per year, and produce 900 tons of oxygen a year, while also decreasing the air temperature and providing a new habitat for displaced wildlife. Solar panels(控制板) on the roofs will collect renewable energy to power the buildings.

The project comes on the heels of Stefano Boeri Architetti's Vertical Forest, two residential towers in Milan covered in the equivalent(等同物) of five acres of forest.

"We started to imagine if it was possible to create an urban environment by planting many trees in the city,"Boeri said. China, in his eyes, provided the perfect background for such an ambitious project.

But the project's completion is a long way off. Construction is set to begin in 2020.Boeri said there is still a lot of planning and research required before a projected completion date can be set. He remains, however, optimistic about the project, and confident about its aim." I really think that bringing forests into the city is a way to reduce climate change," he said.

  1. (1) What can be concluded from the first two paragraphs?
A . A ban will be stopped quickly. B . An Italian company will pay for the new plan. C . A new neighborhood will satisfy the guidelines. D . All strange buildings in China have been torn down.
  2. (2) What benefit will this project bring about?
A . Purifying the air around. B . Controlling the climate of the area. C . Providing habitats for all the wildlife. D . Supplying solar energy to the world.

According to a new review of research about good moods (心情) and physical activity, people who work out even once a week or for as little as 10 minutes a day tend to be more cheerful than those who never exercise. And any type of exercise may be helpful.

The idea that moving can affect our moods is not new. A number of past studies have noted that physically active people have much lower risks of developing anxiety than people who rarely move. But that research centered on the relationship between exercise and mental problems. Fewer past studies explored links between physical activity and positive emotions, especially in people who already were mentally healthy, and those studies often looked at a single age group or type of exercise.

So for the new review, researchers at the University of Michigan decided to collect and analyze various past studies of working out and happiness. They began by combing research databases for relevant studies. Most of those were observational, meaning that the scientists simply looked at a group of people, asking them how much they worked out and how happy they were. A few of the studies were experiments in which people started exercising and researchers measured their happiness before and after. The number of participants (参与者) in any one study was often small, but together, they represented more than 500,000 people ranging in age from teenagers to the old.

For most of them, the Michigan researchers found, exercise was strongly linked to happiness. Every one of the observational studies showed a beneficial relationship between being physically active and being happy. The type of exercise did not seem to matter. And the amount of exercise needed to influence happiness was slight (微小的). In several studies, people who worked out only once or twice a week said they felt much happier than those who never exercised. In other studies, 10 minutes a day of physical activity was linked with cheerful moods.

  1. (1) Paragraph 2 mainly focuses on         .
A . the benefits of working out B . the risks of developing anxiety C . the effects of positive emotions D . the limitations of the past studies
  2. (2) How did the Michigan researchers carry out the new review of research?
A . By getting more age groups included in the research. B . By recording the types and amounts of exercise people take. C . By measuring participants9 happiness after they take exercise. D . By gathering and analyzing past studies of exercise and happiness.
  3. (3) Which of the following is in line with the finding by the Michigan researchers?
A . Those who never exercise are more likely to suffer mental problems. B . The type of exercise plays an important role in influencing happiness. C . There is a strong connection between physical activity and good moods. D . People working out daily feel happier than those exercising once a week.

Learners of English, especially self-taught learners may have trouble in understanding speeches by native speakers. The following ways might help improve their listening ability.

First of all, do things step by step. It is not good to listen to something beyond your level. Better choose a suitable course and start with the first book. Go on to the second book only after you are sure you understand the first one.

Secondly, stick to (坚持) one course of study. Don't change books often. Never let your attention be attracted (吸引) by another course just because it seems to be more "fashionable".

Thirdly, listen to the English news program over the radio from time to time. Better go through the news stories in the Chinese-language newspaper first. That will make it easy for you to understand the English news on the radio.

Call it a mobility system or a wheelchair—it can be seen at the Tokyo airport moving on its own. It is helping with social distancing while fighting the spread of the coronavirus. It also helps older passengers and those who otherwise need assistance walking the last few steps to the boarding gate.

The mobility system seats one person and runs on its own without hitting anything. It has a preprogrammed path of about 600 meters at Tokyo's Haneda International Airport. It was shown on Monday by WHILL, the company behind the technology.

WHILL Chief Executive Satoshi Sugie said robotics and selfdriving technology reduce the need for a human at the wheel. They are good for these times of "living with" coronavirus. The ride lasts several minutes. It travels from the security area to the boarding gate at a speed of 3. 5 kilometers per hour. But many people hope the technology can help in other places, such as hospitals or parks. The technology uses sensors and cameras to see a clear path and avoid hitting those walking toward it. It could also help Japan free up laborers. Japan, like many other nations, suffers from a labor shortage. The technology could free a worker to do another job.

Tests have been carried out at several airports since last year, including John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York. The company hopes to put it in airports around the world.

The person on the machine can start or stop it through a simple controller. It runs on batteries and is programmed to return to where it started when its passenger gets off. Anyone needing help walking long distances can use it at Terminal One at Haneda airport. It is called the lastmile mobility, says WHILL.

  1. (1) What do we know about the mobility system?

A . Sensors and cameras. B . The speed of the machine. C . The path of the ride. D . The distance of the ride.
  4. (4) What can we infer from the last two paragraphs?
A . The system runs completely on its own. B . The system has been put into use in the US. C . WHILL will continue to test the system in airports worldwide. D . The system is controlled by a passenger to return to the start.

The news that all teachers were expected to attend camp with their students left me feeling unsettled. For the first time in more than 20 years, I would need to spend three days in the early autumn bush with 120 14-year-olds.

I love spending time with teenagers. But I teach Grade 12 English and am 51 years old. There is a difference between a literary seminar on King Lear, no matter how lively it may be, and late-night party in a campground. Besides, my idea of "outdoors" is biking on the Ottawa bike paths or sitting in the backyard with a cup of tea and a good book.

Eventually, we turn down a long dirt track that dives into a forest. I read the schedule and note the impressive minute-by-muinute detail for the next 72 hours. I've never faced such a structured time since, well, when I went to camp in Grade 9. I think of home.

The next morning, I arise early. It is 7 a.m. Time for the polar bear dip. Everyone asks if I am going to swim. I respond with lame excuses and then wander, like a Grade 8 boy at the edges of a middle-school dance. Kids charge in, great plumes of water rising up around them as they shout with joy. My colleagues link arms, count down and run into the water bravely. Toweling off, the swimmers discuss the water temperature. The regret that I knew I would feel starts to kill me. I

will now forever be the guy who did not take part in the polar bear dip. I walk slowly up to the dining hall and decide that from that moment on I will commit fully to camp life. My unwillingness to do anything is replaced with a burning desire to do everything.

At 7 a.m. the next morning, I am the first person on the beach in my bathing suit. I dive into the water. I scream about how good it feels. Toweling off afterward, I talk to anyone within earshot about the temperature of the water.

Later that day, the camp winds down. Something has happened in this camp. To the students, for sure, but also to me. When the last camper leaves, I give the camp director a big hug.

  1. (1) How did the author feel before the camp?
    A . Angry. B . Disappointed. C . Anxious. D . Excited.
  2. (2) What's the author's purpose of mentioning the literary seminar in Paragraph 2?
A . To stress its liveliness. B . To explain its topic. C . To introduce his preference. D . To show its similarity to camping.
  3. (3) Why does the author decide to devote himself to camping?
A . He hates to be regret-stricken. B . He is fed up with making excuses. C . He desires to show off his swimming skills. D . He is encouraged to do so by his colleagues.
  4. (4) What happened to the author at the end of the camp?
A . He has used up his energy. B . He misses home very much. C . He turns into a camp director. D . He has become a camp lover.

Dunhuang is the top tourist city in China. Its key points of interest and natural sights are shockingly beautiful and able to tug at one's heart. The Pearl of the Silk Road, Dunhuang, opens her arms to welcome tourists from all over the world.

Mogao Caves

Located 25 kilometers southeast of Dunhuang, Mogao Caves is regarded as the best Buddhist spot in China, perhaps in the whole world. The artistic features of the treasured Buddhist murals (壁画) represent perfectly the artistic style of the Northern Wei (386-543) Sui (581-618) and Tang (618-907) dynasties.

Yumenguan Pass

Situated 90 kilometers northwest of the city, the Yumen Pass was an important gateway to the western region in ancient times. Yumen Pass, Hecang Town and Han Great Wall (Han Dynasty) are the major sights in this area. Since the Yumen Pass is a distance from Dunhuang, one can have a feel of the desolation (荒凉) of western China.

Crescent (新月) Lake

Five kilometers southwest of the city, the Crescent Lake lies in the arms of Echoing-Sand Mountain, appearing clear and beautiful. The lake is crescent-shaped, hence the name. It's surrounded by quicksand. Although it's quite windy sometimes, the lake has never been covered by the sand. It's really a marvelous scene in the desert.

Echoing-Sand Mountain

Five kilometers south of the city, Echoing-Sand Mountain is the accumulation of years of sand in the size of rice. Each time the wind blows, there is a sound from the mountain and when there is a breeze, the sound is like musical instruments, hence the name. The most marvelous experience is when after climbing to the top, although quite tough, one can slide down to the foot of the mountain, a wonderfully amusing experience!

  1. (1) Which attraction is suitable for tourists interested in Buddhism culture?
    A . Mogao Caves. B . Yumenguan Pass. C . Crescent Lake. D . Echoing-Sand Mountain.
  2. (2) In what way did Crescent Lake get its name?

Giant pandas (大熊猫) are no longer endangered, Chinese officials have said, decades of work to save the creatures helped drive their population in the wild up to  1, 800. The species will be listed as vulnerable (易危物种),Cui Shuhong, director of the Department of Natural Ecological Protection of the Ministry of Ecology and Environment, said at a press conference on Wednesday.

China has spent half a century attempting to boost the population of its famous animals, creating panda reserves across several mountain ranges in an effort to save them from extinction. They were taken off the endangered list by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) in 2016.

Since the 1970s, Chinese officials have worked on a campaign to drive up their numbers. To prevent habitat loss, officials created specially designed nature reserves in areas where their main food source, bamboo, is plentiful. In 2017, China announced plans for a 10,476-square-mile reserve, which is three times the size of Yellowstone National Park.

"China has established a relatively complete nature reserves system," Cui said on Wednesday as he announced the move. "Large areas of natural ecosystems have been systematically and completely protected, and wildlife habitats have been effectively improved."

Pandas are known in China as an umbrella species, which means experts believe measures to protect them would help protect other species, as well as the larger ecosystem. Cui added that the populations of some other rare and endangered species are gradually recovering as well. "The number of species such as Siberian tigers, Amur leopards, and Asian elephants has increased significantly." he said.

  1. (1) What has happened to giant pandas?
A . They will never be protected in future. B . Their nature reserves will decrease sharply. C . They are not listed as endangered species. D . They have to face the worsening situations.
  2. (2) What's the meaning of the underlined word "boost" in paragraph 2?
    A . Increase. B . Maintain. C . Cancel. D . Copy.

A . They can improve the production of umbrellas. B . Protecting it is beneficial to a larger ecosystem. C . They are not at the top of food chain in nature. D . Protecting it means endangering other species.
  4. (4) Where is the text most probably taken from?
    A . A novel. B . A business plan. C . A guidebook. D . A newspaper.
