Five Things Nobody Told Me about College

As I type this, I am in my university dorm room. A year ago, when I was awaiting to hear the results of my college applications, I often went to websites for some type of insider look on what college would be like. However, there's only so much that prep books, websites, and older friends can teach. Here are the top 5things nobody told me about college:

Nobody entering a university knows exactly what they want to study. If they tell you otherwise, they’re lying and will probably change what they want to purse within the first quarter of attendance. During my first quarter at University of California, Riverside (UCR), I thought that I wanted to study Political Science with its focus on International Affairs, so that's what I applied for. However, once I worked with statewide and local government, I realized that a better fit for me would be Public Policy, and now I am in the process of changing my area.

In college, there are so many good chances for you to meet your expectations. However, there is a very important difference between wanting to do something and applying for something. In order for you to take advantage of the conferences, research, internships, and fellowships that your university offers, apply! Step into your academic advisor's office, introduce yourself, and begin making the valuable connections that are necessary to help during the rest of your college career. Great things happen when you step out of your comfort zone, and you would be surprised on how many chances exist if you just ask.

College is where you meet your bridesmaids, neighbors, and potential bosses. The relationships you develop now will probably be linked to the ones you value later, so be wise about the people who you invest yourself in. You are only one person, and you do not have time to waste on people who would rather cause drama or mess up with your purpose. Surround yourself with uplifting individuals who challenge you to be better while loving you for who you are, and be patient to the people who are the complete opposite of that description.

As a first-year, I was afraid to make any noise towards campus issues that I noticed. It was not until I became involved in student government that I gained the confidence to handle projects that I created with the help of ASUCR Office of the President. During my first quarter, I spoke directly to the Chancellor, asking him for support towards my initiatives, met with the Vive Chancellors, and cooperated with my teaching assistances to begin my undergraduate research protect. Nothing good will happen when you are silent.

At my high school, there were about only four active club and organizations that students could be a part of. Imagine my surprise when I stepped foot onto UCR's campus, where over 400 organizations exist, ranging from political organizations to karate club. You are not paying all or your tuition(学费)to merely go to class, study, pass tests and graduate. Make something worthy out of your experience. Create that you will want to tell your grandchildren one day. It all begins here, by signing up to join an organization.

There are plenty of beauty schools throughout the country that can help you to start a career in cosmetology(美容业). Nowadays, young people may not be able to afford a four-year college. Students can look forward to attending a beauty school program which will only take a few months to complete and start their career right away to earn money.

Money is the root of all evil (邪恶) and new study claims there may be some truth behind the saying. Scientists at the University of California Berkeley, US, announced on February 27 that rich people are more likely to do immoral things, such as lie or cheat, than poorer people. The scientists did a series of eight experiments. They published their findings online in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNA《美国国家科学院院刊》).

They carried out the first two experiments from the sidewalk near Berkeley. They noted that drivers of newer and more expensive cars were more likely to cut off other cars and pedestrians at crosswalks. Nearly 45 percent of people driving expensive ears ignored a pedestrian compared with only 30 percent of people driving mow modest cars.

In another experiment, a group of college students was asked if they would do immoral things in various everyday situations. Examples included taking printer paper from work and not telling a salesperson when he or she gave back more change. Students from higher — class families were more likely to act dishonestly.

According to the scientists, rich people often think money can get them out of trouble. This makes them less afraid to take risks. It also means they care less about other people's feelings.

Finally, it just makes them greedier. “Higher wealth status seems to make you want even more, and that increased want leads you to bend the rules or break the rules to serve your self- interest,” said Paul Piff, lead scientist of the study.

Piff pointed out that the findings don't mean that all rich people are untrustworthy or all poor people honest. He said the experiments were to show how people living in different social situations express their instincts(本能)and values in different ways.

  1. (1) By saying “money is the root of all evil”, the author wants to       .
A . link wealth with bad behavior B . draw readers' attention to the research C . show how the saying proves the findings D . defend rich people who do immoral things
  2. (2) According to the scientists, which is NOT the factor that makes rich people immoral?
A . They welcome risks. B . They have more desires. C . They believe money talks. D . They become more selfish.
  3. (3) Why did the scientists do the experiments?
A . To show how social status affects people's morality. B . To show people's instincts and values in different ways. C . To test whether the saying “money is the root of all evil” is true. D . To show the difference between higher - class people and lower - class people.
  4. (4) What does the passage really want to show us?
A . The poor are respectable. B . Money is the root of all evil. C . All rich people are untrustworthy. D . The rich are more likely to act badly.

In 1945, Guido and his son are forced onto a train and taken to a concentration camp. Despite being a non-Jew, Dora demands to be on the same train to join her family. Despite being surrounded by the misery, sickness and death at the camp, Giosue does not question this fiction because of his father's convincing performance and his own innocence. Guido keeps the story right until the end when, in the chaos(混乱)of shutting down the camp as the Americans approach, he tells his son to stay in a small box until everybody has left, this being the final competition before the tank is his. Guido tries to find Dora, but is caught and killed by a Nazi soldier. As he is taken away to be shot, he maintains the fictions of the game by marching in a goose-step on purpose…

Are you a different person when you speak a foreign language? That's just one of the questions the New Yorker's writer and native North Carolinian Lauren Collins explores in her autobiography, about her tough efforts to master French after marrying a Frenchman whose name —Olivier—she couldn't even pronounce properly. When in French ranges from the humorously personal story to a deeper look at various theories of language acquisition and linguistics (语言学).

The couple met in London “on more or less neutral ground: his continent, my language.” But the balance shifted when they moved to Geneva for Olivier's work. The normally voluble (健谈的) Collins found herself at a loss — “nearly speechless.” The language barrier, and her dependence on her husband for simple things like buying the right cut of meat worsened her mixed feelings about “unlovely, but not ridiculous” Geneva. She comments, “Language, as much as land, is a place__To be cut off from it is to be, in a sense, homeless.

Her sense of alienation (疏离感) leads to an examination of America's miserable record when it comes to foreign languages, “Linguists call America 'the graveyard of languages' because of its singular ability to take in millions of immigrants and make their native languages die out in a few generations,” Collins writes. Educated in Wilmington, N.C., and at Princeton, she could — like the vast majority of Americans — only speak their mother tongue.

Eight months after she moved to Switzerland, Collins gives up on the natural acquisition of language and finally attends a French course. As she struggles with grammar and vocabulary, Collins notes smartly that vert (green),verre (glass), ver (worm), vers (toward), and vair (squirrel) compose a quintuple homonym (同形异义). “Although it's difficult, French can try” she says.

French is actually considered among the easiest languages for an English speaker to learn, especially compared to Arabic or Mandarin Chinese. Collins, whose notably rich English vocabulary includes glossolalia (nonsense speech) and shibboleth (catchword or slogan), finds plenty of terrific French words to love. She writes, “English is a trust fund, an unearned inheritance (遗产), but I've worked for every bit of French I've banked.”

Unlike Jhumpa Lahiri, who became so hooked on Italian and used it to write In Other Words, Collins's goals for learning French were more modest, “I wanted to speak French and to sound like North Carolina.” She also wanted to be able to deal with chimney sweeps and butchers, communicate with her in-laws, and “to touch Olivier in his own language.” She admits that she feels different speaking French. ''Its austerity (朴素) made me feel more confused.”

Readers looking for the romantic spark of classic cross-cultural love stories featuring an outgoing American and a shy Frenchman will find flashes of it here. Among the many cultural differences the couple argue over are her enthusiastic American habit of applying the verb love to express enthusiasm for shoes, strawberries, and husbands alike. But there's far more to Collins, book than fantastic comedy, and those who have experienced linguistic crossings themselves tend to find particular resonance (共鸣) in its inquiry into language, identity, and transcultural translation.

Arranged by chapters named for verb tenses, When in French works its way from The Past Perfect (Le plus-que-parfait) to The Present (Le Present) and The Conditional (Le Conditionnel). Collins ends on a delightful note with Le Futur—fitting for a new mother about to move with her hard-won French husband, French language, and Swiss-born daughter to the French-speaking city of her dreams, Paris.

  1. (1) Which of the following statements is NOT the reason why Collin studied French?
A . She is eager to understand her husband in his own language. B . She aims at dealing with everyday life affairs in French. C . She wants to communicate with her husband's relatives freely. D . She tries to apply French to serve her writing career.
  2. (2) What does she mean by her comments “Language, as much as land, is a place. To be cut off from it is to be, in a sense, homeless.” in paragraph 2?
A . Understanding the language of a country helps you find the sense of belonging there. B . If you understand the language of one country, you can get a house easily there. C . You should forget your native language in order to get a home in a foreign country. D . Language, as well as land, is a place on which you can build your own home.
  3. (3) What can be inferred from Paragraph 3?
A . Only English-speaking people can immigrate into America. B . Other languages except English are forbidden in American's universities. C . American culture replaces immigrants' native languages gradually. D . So many immigrants may die very soon in America.
  4. (4) Who can find particular resonance (共鸣) in When in French?
A . Those who have to learn a foreign language. B . Those who have suffered from linguistic crossings. C . Those who became addicted to French. D . Those whose native languages have died out.
  5. (5) Which of the following has the closest meaning to the underlined word “Le Futur” in the last paragraph?
    A . The past. B . The Present Perfect. C . The Future. D . The Present Continuous.
  6. (6) This text would be probably found in ________.
A . science section of a local newspaper B . literature section of a science journal C . biography section of a social magazine D . review and recommendation of a magazine

When I was in the eighth grade, one caring teacher of mine taught me several useful little techniques. He told me to keep a notebook nearby when I was reading and that I should try to figure out what the main idea of every paragraph was so that I could understand the passages better. It seemed awfully boring at that time, but I decided to give it a try anyway.

It didn't take long before I started reading a book called How to Read a Book that would completely change how I thought about the written word. Thanks to these techniques, I learned to get the most out of reading. I kept applying them over the years until I finally came up with a lot of little techniques for reading a book.

I also eventually came to learn that there were a lot of different kinds of reading. For example, when I read a Stephen King novel, the interesting plot made me completely relaxed. Then there's reading to learn new things, which is what I do when I read personal finance books. There's also reading to understand and grow, which is easily the hardest and the most rewarding. The last kind of reading involves taking a piece of literature or a nonfiction book that you might read for simple pleasure and transforming it into something life-changing, or something that causes you to question some of your deeply-held ideas and beliefs.

How to Read a Book really focuses on the latter two: books that you read to learn about a new topic or to learn a skill, and books that you read to learn about yourself. If you've ever been drawn to read to really improve yourself, this book is well worth the time to read even if it's a bit dry at times. Let's dig in.

  1. (1) The writer's teacher gave him some reading techniques so that __________.

A . he could become interested in reading B . he could increase his reading speed C . he could learn more from what he read D . he could remember all the books he read
  2. (2) The writer said that he read a Stephen King novel for _________.

A . fun and pleasure B . personal development C . learning new things D . changing his former beliefs
  3. (3) The writer wrote the passage to _________.

A . encourage readers to improve themselves by wide reading B . thank the teacher who once helped him improve his reading C . give an introduction to a very practical finance book D . advise people to read a personal development book

When introducing American universities, some of the first institutions to mention are the Ivy League schools. Originally, the Ivy League was an athletic conference made up of 8 private institutes of higher learning in northeastern United States. However, as time went on, these schools also became known for their excellence in academics besides athletics. Included in the Ivy League schools are Brown University, Columbia University, Cornell University, Dartmouth College, Princeton University, University of Pennsylvania, Yale University, and Harvard University. These 8 schools have been recognized as some of the best colleges and universities in the United States.

Harvard University is a private institution located in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The university includes a number of graduate and professional schools, as well as a college for undergraduates. In 2012, Harvard ranked number one in US News' ranking of national universities again. Founded in 1636, Harvard is the oldest institute of higher education in the United States. It can be said that first there was Harvard, then the United States of America. Also, Harvard's library contains the oldest collection of books in the United States as well as the largest private collection in the world. Harvard has also been described by Forbes Magazine as one of the "billionaire universities" as of their recent list of 469 billionaires, 50 received a degree from Harvard.

Harvard College (the institute for undergraduate students) is one of the most famous schools in the United States. It offers over 40 undergraduate fields of study, including astrophysics(天体物理学), mathematics, neurobiology(神经生物学), etc. And the financial aid program there is amazing. Even though the tuition is about $ 37,576, and there are other expenses throughout the year, about 70% of undergraduate students received financial aid. Out of those students, over 90% of them had their full need met. And the policies for international students are the same for U.S. citizens.

Harvard College is very selective, as it only admits about 6% of their applicants. For admission into Harvard College, it is required that students take the SAT or the ACT, as well as SAT Subject Tests. Harvard will also look at other factors during admission such as your application essay, high school transcript, work experience, GPA (Grade Point Average), your interview, recommendations, and most importantly, your character and personal qualities.

  1. (1) What are the Ivy League schools famous for?

A . Athletics and location. B . Academics and history. C . Financial aid and training. D . Athletics and academics.
  2. (2) Why is Harvard called one of the "billionaire universities"?

A . Because nearly one ninth of the billionaires once studied in Harvard. B . Because there are 50 billionaires in Harvard. C . Because people can get a lot of money from Harvard. D . Because 469 billionaires sponsor Harvard.

Have you ever wondered what the longest word in the English language is? Believe it or not, there's no simple answer to the question. You might think it would be as easy as opening a dictionary and looking for the longest word. However, it's far more complicated (复杂的) than that.

Over time, many people have suggested many different words for the title of the longest word in English. How can that be? That's because the first thing that people have different opinions on is what should be considered a word. Some of the words were simply made up to be the longest! For example, there is one really famous long word that most kids know. It comes from Disney's movie Mary Poppins: supercalifragilisticexpialidocious, which means wonderful. But since that 34-letter word was made up simply to be sung as a song in a movie, should it count?

How about long words that actually describe something in the world? Scientists have come up with several possible choices. The name of a virus(病毒) totals 1,185 letters. There's also a protein(蛋白质) whose name totals 1, 909 letters. Should these win the title? "Not so fast!" say some people. Are these words ever actually used? Can they even be pronounced? And are they meaningful just because they are made up to be long?

If you're wondering about some long words in common English, here are some examples. Those words include uncharacteristically (20 letters), deinstitutionalization(22 letters) and counterrevolutionaries (also 22 letters) Or perhaps the word "smiles" is the longest word in English. Sure, it has only six letters, but there is a "mile between the first and the last letters!

  1. (1) Why does the author mention the underlined questions in Paragraph 3?
A . To ask for readers opinions. B . To compare different ideas C . To describe the condition D . To show people's doubt
  2. (2) How does the author sound in the last paragraph?
    A . Proud B . Humorous C . Excited D . Surprised
  3. (3) What is the text mainly about?
A . English words change a lot as time goes by. B . Long words are often used in scientific fields C . It is hard to decide what the longest word is. D . Why we can't understand some English words

Sometimes you'll hear people say that you can't love others until you love yourself. Sometimes you'll hear people say that you can't expect someone else to love you until you love yourself. Either way, you've got to love yourself first and this can be tricky. Sure we all know that we're the apple of our parents' eyes, and that our Grandmas think we're great talents and our Uncle Roberts think that we will go to the Olympics. But sometimes it's a lot harder to think such nice thoughts about ourselves. If you find that believing in yourself is a challenge, it is time you should build a positive self-image and learn to love yourself.

Self-image is your own mind's picture of yourself. This image includes the way you look, the way you act, the way you talk and the way you think. Interestingly, our self-images are often quite different from the images others hold about US. Unfortunately, most of these images are more negative than they should be. Thus changing the way you think about yourself is the key to changing your self-image and your whole world.

The best way to defeat a passive self-image is to step back and decide to stress your successes. That is, make a list if you need to, but write down all of the great things you do every day. Don't allow doubts to occur in it.

It very well might be that you are experiencing a negative self-image because you can't move past one flaw or weakness that you see about yourself. Well, roll up your sleeves and make a change of it as your primary task. If you think you're silly because you aren't good at math, find a tutor. If you think you're weak because you can't run a mile, get to the track and practice. If you think you're dull because you don't wear the latest trends, buy a few new clothes. But remember, just because you think it doesn't mean it's true.

The best way to get rid of a negative self-image is to realize that your image is far from objective, and to actively convince yourself of your positive qualities. Changing the way you think and working on those you need to improve will go a long way towards promoting a positive self-image. When you can pat (拍) yourself on the back, you'll know you're well on your way. Good luck!

  1. (1) You need to build a positive self-image when you ________.
A . dare to challenge yourself B . feel it hard to change yourself C . are unconfident about yourself D . have a high opinion of yourself
  2. (2) How should you change your self-image according to the passage?
A . To keep a different image of others. B . To make your life successful. C . To understand your own world. D . To change the way you think.
  3. (3) What is the passage mainly about?
A . How to prepare for your success. B . How to face challenges in your life. C . How to build a positive self-image. D . How to develop your good qualities.
  4. (4) Who are the intended readers of the passage?
    A . Parents B . Adolescents C . Educators D . People in general

In some countries where racial prejudice is acute, violence has so come to be taken for granted as a means of solving differences that it is not even questioned. There are countries where the white man imposes his rule by brute force; there are countries where the black man protests by setting fire to cities and by looting and pillaging. Important people on both sides, who would in other respects appear to be reasonable men, get up and calmly argue in favor of violence—as if it were a legitimate solution, like any other. What is really frightening, what really fills you with despair, is the realization that when it comes to the crunch (关键时刻), we have made no actual progress at all. We may wear collars and ties instead of war-paint, but our instinct remain basically unchanged. The whole of the recorded history of the human race, that tedious documentation of violence, has taught us absolutely nothing. We have still not learned that violence never solves a problem but makes it more acute. The sheer horror, the bloodshed (流血), the suffering mean nothing. No solution ever comes to light the morning after when we dismally contemplate the smoking ruins and wonder what hit us.

The truly reasonable men who know where the solutions lie are finding it harder and harder to get a hearing. They are despised mistrusted and even persuaded by their own kind because they advocate such apparently outrageous things as law enforcement (执行). If half the energy that goes into violent acts were put to good use, if our efforts were directed at cleaning up the slums and ghettos, at improving living standards and providing education and employment for all, we would have gone a long way to arriving at a solution. Our strength is sapped by having to mop to the mess that violence leaves in its wake. In a well-directed effort, it would not be impossible to fulfill the ideals of a stable social programme. The benefits that can be derived from constructive solutions are everywhere apparent in the world around us. Genuine and lasting solutions are always possible, providing we work within the framework of the law.

Before we can even begin to contemplate peaceful co-existence between the races, we must appreciate each other's problems. And to do this, we must learn about them: it is a simple exercise in communication, in exchange information. "Talk, talk, talk" the advocates of violence say, "all you ever do is talk, and we are none the wiser." It's rather like the story of the famous barrister who painstakingly explained his case to the judge. After listening to a lengthy argument, the judge complained that after all this talk, he was none the wiser. "Possibly, my lord," the barrister replied, "none the wiser, but surely far better informed." Knowledge is the necessary prerequisite to wisdom: the knowledge that violence creates the evils it pretends to solve.

Developing healthy eating habits starts from childhood, therefore it is important for parents to teach and provide children with a healthy diet. DPHSS administrator of the Bureau of Nutrition Services, Charlie Morris told KUAM News, "A healthy diet for a child consists of a lot of fruits and vegetables in the diet limiting the amount of simple sugars in the diet and high fat food and highly processed(加工的) food."

This means staying away as much as possible from food such as chips, cookies, candies and sugary drinks, as all children need to have meals which involve a well-balanced diet. Community nutritionist(营养学家) Thelma Romoso said, "The fruit, the vegetable, the grain, the protein, and also the milk, the diary product, so for the fruits it's easy for a mother to go into the two plus three concept of fruits and vegetables or five a day."

This concept means that there are at least two servings of fruits a day, three servings of vegetables a day which can be served for lunch and dinner. As for protein parents can make a variety of dishes from chicken, beef, fish or even dried beans to make sure the child gets three servings a day.

Morris said that the child's hunger level controls how much is eaten and the parent controls what and when the meal is offered, saying, "Mom needs to ensure that the food offered is good food for the child to eat and throughout the day depending on how active they are, snacks(零食) are not a bad thing, so the mom should offer good kinds of snacks."

When it comes to preparing your child's lunch and snacks for school, make sure to keep in mind that the food you provide should not only be a source of energy but also be nutritionally beneficial such as fresh fruits, and whole grain bread. But parents must be sure to remember that a good nutritional diet must be balanced with physical activity, namely it is important that children get outside and run around and play and get activity in addition to eating a good diet.

If you're a student, developing the following skills will help you achieve success in school and in life.

Time management. High-school students have an average of 35 hours per week of class time and college students have an average of 15 to 18 hours per week. Manage your free time wisely and you'll make full use of each day.

Good study habits. If you've got them, it's great. If not, there's still time to develop them.

Good study habits include the following:

Always be prepared for class, and attend classes regularly.

Finish homework in a timely manner.

Review your notes daily rather than study for tests the night before.

Set aside quiet time each day for study, even if you don't have homework or a test the next day!

Good note-taking. You can't possibly set down everything the teacher says since we talk at a pace of about 225 words per minute. But, you do need to set down the important materials. Note-taking should be in a way that's the most helpful to you. You can try writing notes on different colored cards. If you really have a problem with note-taking, you might ask your teacher if you can record daily lessons. Do whatever it takes.

Review of daily notes. Don't wait until the night before the test to review your notes. Go over your notes each day while the lecture is still fresh in your mind. Add any missing pieces. Compare your notes with a classmate's notes. Review your notes each day to improve your learning and build towards your final goal: mastery of the subject or skill.

"No matter where you are or what time it is there's something going on at a Hard Rock Cafe. All over the world our cafes not only serve great food, but they serve up great music." Hard Rock Cafes around the world symbolize the timeless energy, originality and unifying (团结的) spirit that have helped to shape rock music over the last century.

Founded by two Americans, the first Hard Rock Cafe (HRC) opened its doors to the public on June 14, 1971, in London. Today, HRC has become a global phenomenon with more than 180 cafes in different countries.

HRC has also become the world's leading collector and exhibitor of rock 'n' roll memorabilia. It all started when Eric Clapton, a regular at the first HRC, asked the staff if they could hang his guitar on the wall to mark his favourite stool (凳子) as "his spot". They did and one week later, a package from Pete Townshend arrived with a guitar and a note with the message, "Mine's as good as his! Love, Pete."

Ever since then, Hard Rock Cafes have been collecting pieces of rock memorabilia and covering their walls with them. Their collection is rotated from restaurant to restaurant and provides the world's most comprehensive "visual history" of rock 'n' roll. These treasures include an awe-inspiring collection of classic guitars and other instruments, posters, music, etc.

Throughout its history, HRC has been governed by a special service philosophy: "Love All — Serve All." Since it was established, HRC has taken part in a wide variety of humane activities around the world. Following its idea of being more than just a restaurant, HRC tries to connect its business and its passion to make the earth a safer, healthier and better place to live.

You may have been told in the past that reading to your children can help their development. Now an organization is trying to stress it even more.

The American Academy of Pediatrics is now having doctors encourage parents to read aloud to their children, even at the earliest stages. They say it is an important part of the brain's development in the first three years of a child's life.

"Although reading to our children can be a simple thing, it has a huge effect on our children. It can encourage our children to read later on in life and give a good start to their education. It can enhance the vocabulary and other communication skills. We can continue to do something that doesn't take a lot of time and energy to tell the children that love of reading is so important when they are babies," said Dr Heidi Stoltenberg at Mayo Clinic Health System.

Reading to your children is very important. Stoltenberg said it is never too early to start. "It may seem kind of unusual because we don't necessarily think babies are at an age when you would read to them, but immediately when you come home from the delivery (分娩) of your baby is a great time to start that," Stoltenberg said.

Studies have shown that the poverty level plays a major role in parents who read to their children. Many times, that is simply because the families cannot afford books or other things to read. There are many resources (资源) in our area to help those families get reading materials. The United Way of Freeborn County, and many others across the region, have teamed up with Dolly Parton's Imagination Library. Many local hospitals, including Mayo Clinic Health System in Albert Lea and Austin, also take part in Reach Out and Read.

  1. (1) What does the underlined word "enhance" in the third paragraph mean?
    A . Choose. B . Receive. C . Increase. D . Prevent.
  2. (2) What is Stoltenberg's opinion of reading to babies?
A . She thinks it is completely meaningless. B . She believes babies may get hurt if you do that. C . She insists that the parents turn to some experts. D . She holds that reading to babies should start as early as possible.
  3. (3) What's the main difficulty for parents to read to their children?
A . Being short of time. B . Being short of money. C . The bad family environment. D . The poor education background.
  4. (4) What does the text mainly talk about?
A . The importance of reading to children. B . New ways to develop children's reading ability. C . Reasons that influence children's reading habits. D . Necessity of paying attention to children's brain development.

In modern society there is a great deal of argument about competition. Some value it highly, believing that it is responsible for social-progress and prosperity. Others say that competition is bad; that it sets one person against another; that it leads to unfriendly relationship between people.

I have taught many children who held the belief that their self-worth relied on how well they performed at tennis and other skills. For them, playing well and winning are often life-and-death affairs. In their single-minded pursuit of success, the development of many other human qualities is sadly forgotten.

However, while some seem to be lost in the desire to succeed, others take an opposite attitude. In a culture which values only the winner and pays no attention to the ordinary players, they strongly blame competition. Among the most vocal are youngsters who have suffered under competitive pressures from their parents or society. Teaching these young people, I often observe in them a desire to fail. They seem to seek failure by not trying to win or achieve success. By not trying, they always have an excuse: "I may have lost, but it doesn't matter because I really didn't try." What is not usually admitted by themselves is the belief that if they had really tried and lost, that would mean a lot. Such a loss would be a measure of their worth. Clearly, this belief is the same as that of the true competitors who try to prove themselves. Both are based on the mistake belief that—one's self-respect relies on how well one performs in comparison with others. Both are afraid of not being valued. Only as this basic and often troublesome fear begins to dissolve (缓解) can we discover a new meaning in competition.

  1. (1) What does this text mainly talk about?
A . Competition helps to set up self-respect. B . People hold different opinions about competition. C . Competition is harmful to personal quality development. D . Failures are necessary experience in competition.
  2. (2) Some people favor competition because they think it ________.
    A . pushes society forward B . builds up a sense of pride C . improves social abilities D . develops people's relationship
  3. (3) The underlined phrase "the most vocal" in Paragraph 3 refers to those who ________.
A . try their best to win B . highly value competition C . are strongly against competition D . mostly rely on others for success
  4. (4) Which viewpoint does the author agree to?
A . Self-worth relys on winning. B . Competition leads to unfriendly relationship. C . Winning should be a life-and-death matter. D . Fear of failure should be removed in competition.

If you do not use your arms or your legs for some time, they become weak. When you start using them again, they slowly become strong again. Everybody knows this. Yet there are many people who do not knew that one's memory works in the same way. When someone says that he has a good memory, he really means that he keeps his memory in practice by exercising it regularly. When someone else says that his memory is poor, he really means that he does not give it enough chance to become strong.

If a friend complains that his arms are weak, we know that it is his own fault. But if he tell us that he has a poor memory, many of us think that his parents are to blame, or that he is just unlucky, and few of us realize that it is really his own fault. Not all of us can become very strong or very clever, but all of us can improve our memory by the same means —- practice.

Have you ever noticed that people who cannot read or write usually have a better memory than those who can? Why is this? Of course, because people who can't read or write have to remember things: they cannot write them down in a little notebook. They have to remember dates, prices, names, songs and stories, so their memory is exercised all the time.

So if you want a good memory, learn from those who cannot read or write: practice remembering.

  1. (1) What does the underlined word "them" refer to?
A . Your memory B . your hands and feet C . your mind D . your arms or your legs
  2. (2) According to the passage, few people know that ______.
A . a person's memory becomes weak if he does not practice remembering things B . Arms or legs become weak if they are not used for some time. C . When they start using their arms or legs again, they slowly become strong again D . it is their own fault if their arms or legs are weak
  3. (3) Why do people who can't read or write have a better memory?
A . Because they are cleverer than those who can read or write. B . Because they are not cleverer than those who can read or write. C . Because a little notebook helps them get a better memory. D . Because they practice remembering frequently.
  4. (4) If you want a good memory, how can you do?
A . to practice remembering often B . to keep notes C . To study hard D . to improve your IQ

We are all busy talking about and using the Internet, but how many of us know the history of the Internet?

Many people are surprised when they find that the Internet was set up in the 1960s. At that time, computers were large and expensive. Computer networks didn't work well. lf one computer in the network broke down, then the whole network stopped. So a new network system had to be set up. It should be good enough to be used by many different computers. If part of the network was not working, information could be sent through another part. In this way, computer network system would keep on working all the time.

At first the Internet was only used by the government, but in the early 1970s,universities, hospitals and banks were allowed to use it, too. However, computers were still very expensive and the Internet was difficult to use. By the start of the 1990s, computers had become cheaper and easier to use. Scientists had also developed software that made" surfing" the Internet more convenient.

Today it is easy to get online and it is said that millions of people use the Internet every day. Sending email is more and more popular among students.

The Internet has now become one of the most important parts of people's life.

Physical education, or gym class, isn't required for all high school students. In some schools, it isn't offered for some different reasons. But should high school students have physical education? The answer is certainly "yes".

Today many people don't do sports. But as is known to all, doing sports is extremely important for an adult. Teaching teens the importance of a healthy lifestyle and making fitness plans now can help teens put exercise in the first place as an adult.

High school isn't that easy. Many students are under a lot of stress. Stress can be harmful to a student's studies and life. Doing sports can help them deal with stress better, helping them live a happier life at school.

The American Heart Association says that 10 million kids and teens suffer from obesity. Teens should get 60 minutes of physical activity per day to control their weight and to help their bones get stronger. The increase in activities that don't get teens to move around, such as video games and computer activities, means many teens don't get their required exercise. Physical education classes act as a public health measure to encourage activities and help teens have healthy weights.

Inactivity increases teens' risk of developing many diseases. An active lifestyle offers a good way of protection from these health problems. As much as 75 percent of health-care spending goes toward treating medical conditions that can be hindered by lifestyle changes, according to the American College of Sports Medicine.

According to the President's Council on Fitness, Sports and Nutrition (PCFSN), students who performed five hours of physical activity each week improved their academic (学业的) performance. Students from programs with no physical activity, who used the extra time for classroom study, did not perform better on tests than those who gave up some study time in support of physical education.

  1. (1) According to Paragraph 3, what role does physical education in high school play?
A . Helping teens learn to make good plans. B . Relieving the stress faced by teens at school. C . Making teens attach importance to exercise later. D . Getting teens to encourage adults to exercise.

When it comes to praising your child for their actions, parents walk a fine line between being helpful or harmful to their child's development. However, if you've got some rising kids in your home that need to learn to brush their teeth, don't worry. Ifs just fine to praise them.

"Our study does suggest that praise can be a really positive feature of parenting. Praise wins the gold when compared to boring instruction, at least when it comes to dental hygiene (口腔卫生). You can't go wrong if you say ‘good job!' when your child successfully brushes their own teeth," said Julia Leonard, an assistant professor of psychology at Yale University.

The study followed 81 three-year-old just learning to brush their teeth. Parents were required to video their child's tooth-brushing endeavors(尝试) for 16 nights, hitting record as they handed the brush to their child and pushing stop when they took it back.

That allowed researchers to capture all of the parent's praise "Well done! Good job!"—and instructional endeavors such as "Brush the backs of your teeth." and "Hey, don't stop. You're not done yet." After uploading the videos, parents were told to score their child's mood (extremely bad to extremely good) and their own stress levels during the nightly endeavor. Those scores ranged from a scale of 0 (easy-peasy) to 10 (I'm pulling all their teeth out now).

Interestingly, a child's tooth brushing success was directly related to the level of praise in the parents' talk. Children brushed longer on days when their parents used more praise and less instruction. The work is the first to show that parent praise relates to child's persistence (坚持不懈).

However, the study could not show a direct cause and effect, only an association, Leonard stressed. "We don't know that praise causes kids to brush longer. We just know it's associated with more brushing, she said. More research is needed to see if the study's findings could be applied to other tasks that require a child's persistence.

  1. (1) What can be inferred from Julia Leonard's words?
A . Praise can make children honest. B . Praise can make a positive effect on children. C . Saying "good job!" to children can be wrong. D . Praise always fails when compared to boring instruction.
  2. (2) How did Julia Leonard get data for her research?
A . By interviewing kids. B . By using old databases. C . By collecting recordings from parents. D . By asking parents to do questionnaires.
  3. (3) According to this passage, what did the research find?
A . Over-praising didn't lead to ideal results. B . Praise caused kids to brush longer directly. C . Praise helped to build a good habit — persistence. D . Instruction had greater effects on tooth brushing.
  4. (4) Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A . More Instruction, Longer Brushing B . The Power of Parents C . The Benefits of Building Persistence D . Parents: Show your kids praise
