Have you ever noticed that the more you have the more you want? Let's face it. Thinking our life is good enough doesn't come naturally to many people. When we have high expectations of everything in life we will run into disappointment. Only when we are aware that needs are different from desires can we live with satisfaction. Here are a few ideas to help you be happier with what you have and who you are.

Focus on what you are thankful for. Most people want things to be better than they are, or when things are going well, we forget to appreciate what we have. Learn to reflect on how much better things are than they could be. Focus on what you are thankful for. Write down 5 things you are grateful for right now.

When we hold onto regrets from decisions we have made, it can really poison our well-being. Many people regret something they can no longer change, which ends up holding them back from moving forward in a more positive manner. What happened in the past is done and gone, so work to stay present and be mindful of the current moment to find more joy and fulfillment.

When we use other people as the measuring stick for our personal success and quality of life we are likely to be less satisfied. Social comparisons can provide useful information when we try to learn from others, but they also hold our perspective in a discontented position. Compare yourself less with others so you can be satisfied more.

When you are focused on your big ambitions and future goals you might elide the daily pleasures that surround you. Learn to slow down and absorb the wonder and beauty around you. Stay present and focus on the task you're undertaking at the moment. Don't let the life pass you by because you're always on the go and distracted by ambition.

Practice looking at life through the lens of contentment and it will become more natural.

  1. (1) How can we live with contentment?
A . To change our lifestyle. B . To have a motivation in life. C . To give less attention to what we are grateful for. D . To realize the difference between needs and desires.
  2. (2) What's the main idea of Paragraph 3?
A . Make wise decisions. B . Know the present situation C . Let go of regrets. D . Remember the past.
  3. (3) The underlined word “elide”(in Paragraph 5) probably means “____”.
    A . enjoy B . change C . create D . neglect
  4. (4) What should you do to put yourself in a good mood?
A . Make time for simple pleasures. B . Learn from successful people. C . Focus on your future goals. D . Create chance to learn more.

Soda is refreshing and delicious, but it is not part of a healthy, balanced diet. Most sodas are packed with sugar. In fact, a can of soda can be hiding up to 10 teaspoons of sugar! The sugar does make soft drinks delicious, but definitely not nutritious. Too much sugar in a person's diet can lead to diabetes (糖尿病), heart disease, and tooth problems. One of the biggest sugary soda problems is that drinking much can lead to weight gain and even obesity.

There are diet options available for almost every kind of pop (汽水), which means that you don't have to drink all that sugar in order to enjoy a can of soda. Many studies have been done on whether or not aspartame (甜味剂), the sugar substitute in diet soda, is bad for you. Up to now, there are still conflicting opinions on this issue. The European Food Safety Authority recently concluded that aspartame is safe for most people, even in fairly large amounts. Aspartame still might not be good for you, though. Studies have shown that people who drink diet sodas may actually gain more weight than those who drink regular soda, perhaps because, strangely enough, drinks loaded with fake sugar may actually make you want to eat more.

Maybe you've decided it's time to cut down on your soda drinking, but what should you drink instead? Water is absolutely the healthiest thing that you can drink. Your body needs water to stay hydrated (水合物) and function properly, and water contains no calories or fat. Drinking fruit juice occasionally is not a bad thing, but you should be careful what juice and how much juice you're drinking. Fruit juices can contain almost as much sugar as pop!

As with most things to do with your health, moderation is really at the base of any healthy diet. You can totally drink soda, even the sugary kind just, make sure you're not drinking too much!

  1. (1) What can we know about sugar in Paragraph 2?
A . Sugar is a necessary material in making Soda. B . Sugar can make Soda delicious and nutritious. C . Too much sugar may cause health problems. D . Sugar can lead to much fat or even obesity.
  2. (2) What does the author think of aspartame in diet Soda?
A . He believes large amounts of aspartame is safe for people. B . He agrees that aspartame might not be good for health. C . He thinks that aspartame may do great harm to health. D . He insists that aspartame is much safer than sugar.
  3. (3) What does the author advise us to drink more?
    A . Tea. B . Fruit juice. C . Water. D . Pop.

The pursuit of longevity has long been on people's minds, prompting an abundance of research on the effects of food and diet on the human lifespan. According to recent research from the UC Irvine Institute, drinking coffee and wine could help you live longer.

The 90+ Study evaluated more than 1,600 people over the age of 90 for their lifestyle habits and other qualities that might have contributed to their longevity.

Participants were visited every six months, when they were given various tests. Researchers also collected information about the participants' diets, lifestyles, and medical histories.

They found out that two of the habits that helped preserve lives the most are drinking alcohol and coffee. “I have no explanation for it,” admitted Dr Claudia Kawas, “but I do firmly believe that moderate (适度的) drinking improves longevity.” So should we all be drinking more coffee and wine? While that would be great news, the research may not be as definitive as it seems.

“Most studies about alcohol consumption, including The 90+ Study, are observational, so we  can only say that something about drinking is associated with health and longevity,” registered dietitian Jennifer Markowitz told The Daily Meal.

“I'd be curious to see if the coffee and alcohol drinkers shared other important habits or lifestyle factors that might also play into their longevity.”

In other words, it might not be the wine and coffee that's helping people live longer, but the two substances do have some considerable health benefits. “Wine and coffee are packed with antioxidants(抗氧化剂) which are known to protect our bodies from damage caused by free radicals,” explained registered dietitian Keri Gans to The Daily Meal. “Research on antioxidants has shown several heath benefits, including the possibility they may lower the risk of type 2 diabetes, improve cognitive function, decrease the risk of dementia, and lower the risk of heart disease.”

Moderate drinking can be beneficial according to other studies—so long as it's moderate.

  1. (1) What's the passage mainly about?
A . Antioxidants having a positive effect on the lifespan. B . The effects of food and diet on the human lifespan. C . Advocating drinking wine and coffee in our daily life. D . Moderate drinking helping people live longer.
  2. (2) The information was collected about the participants in the 90+ Study except ________.
    A . food consumption B . lifestyle C . hobbies D . medical history
  3. (3) How can the wine and coffee benefit people's health?
A . They provide people with essential nutrition. B . They are rich in antioxidants. C . They protect free radicals in human bodies. D . They can bring relief to pain.
  4. (4) What can we infer from the passage?
A . Not all the people participating in the study are over 90. B . Most studies about alcohol consumption are based on observation. C . Over-drinking can also be beneficial according to other studies. D . Antioxidants can cure type 2 diabetes.

A new study suggests that people who drank a certain amount of alcohol(酒)had a lower risk of cancer and death than those who drank more or none during a nine-year period. And with each additional drink a week, the risk of cancer and death from any cause increased, the scientists reported.

However, the study found only an association between alcohol and cancer and death, and did not prove cause and effect, the researches said. What sets the new study apart, said lead study author Andrew Kunzmann, is that previous studies looked at cancer and death separately. “What our study does is combine the two outcomes together and we find that lighter drinking is associated with the lowest risk of cancer or death,” Kunzmann said.

But Kunzmann noted that the participants(参与者)were all older adults. That means that “we're not really showing what happens in younger people if they drink,” he said. Also, it's difficult to account for other lifestyles that could have affected the results. “These could also influence health. But the results did take into consideration differences in diet, smoking and education among participants,” Kunzmann noted.

The researchers said that they hope their study sparks conversation about reducing the suggested alcohol intake in countries' guidelines. “We're not telling people what they can or can't do or what they can or can't drink,” Kunzmann said. “We're just trying to give them reliable evidence so that they can make their own informed, healthy decisions.”

  1. (1) What is the finding of the new study?
A . Nondrinkers are least likely to have cancer. B . Drinking helps lower the risk of cancer. C . Lighter drinking is helpful to health. D . Heavy drinkers are at more risk.
  2. (2) Which of the following best explains “previous” underlined in Paragraph 2?
    A . Future. B . Present. C . New. D . Former.
  3. (3) What is the main idea of Paragraph 3?
A . The result is of little value. B . The research has its limitations. C . The participants are all adults. D . The influence of diet is included.
  4. (4) What does the researchers suggest people do about drinking?
A . Make their own decisions. B . Reduce the amount they drink. C . Have additional drinks occasionally. D . Drink according to the countries' guidelines.

Sticking to your body's natural sleep-wake cycle is one of the most important strategies for achieving good sleep. If you keep a regular sleep schedule, you will feel much more refreshed and energized than if you sleep the same number of hours at different times. This holds true even if you change your sleep schedule by only an hour or two. Try the following ways to help you stick to your body clock, and you will have a better sleep.

Keeping a regular sleep-wake schedule helps set your body's internal clock and improve the quality of your sleep. Start by setting realistic bedtime that will work with your lifestyle. If you're getting enough sleep, you should wake up naturally without an alarm. If you need an alarm clock to wake up on time, you may need to set earlier bedtime.

Avoid sleeping in — even on weekends or nights you've stayed up late. If you need to make up for late night, choose a daytime nap rather than sleeping in. This way allows you to pay off your sleep debt with disturbing your natural sleep-wake rhythm.

Be smart about napping. As mentioned above, napping is a good way to recharge and make up for lost sleep hours. But if you tend to have trouble falling asleep or staying asleep throughout the night, napping can make things worse. Besides, limiting them to 15 to 20 minutes in the early afternoon is a good idea.

A. Never sleep after dinner.

B. Consistency is vitally important.

C. Try to go to sleep and get up at the same time every day.

D. Don't turn to sleeping pills every time you can't sleep quickly.

E. If sleeplessness is a problem for you, consider ridding naps altogether.

F. Choose a time when you normally feel tired, so that you will fall fast asleep.

G. The more your weekend / weekday sleep schedules differ, the worse the jet lag-like symptoms you will experience.

The World Bank is warning that the West Africa Ebola outbreak could seriously harm the economies (经济)of Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone unless action is taken quickly. World Bank President Jim Yong Kim spoke to reporters recently to discuss the effects of the Ebola spread.

"Our findings show that if the virus(病毒)continues to spread, the economic cost to these countries could grow eight times by 2015. This would be a big catastrophe to their already weak economies," said Kim.

Mr. Kim says, "saving lives and preventing new spread" is most important. The bank has given $117-million for an "immediate help." The World Bank President says the SARS outbreak between 2002 and 2004 showed how a disease could damage economies. 800 people died from SARS and the economic losses were up to $40-billion.

Mr. Kim says SARS and the H1N1 outbreak of 2009 taught that fear and avoidance resulted in about 90-percent of the economic losses. That means the disease is causing two levels of economic damage.

"There are two kinds of contagion(传染). One is connected with the virus itself and the second is connected with the spread of fear about the virus," said Kim.

The World Bank thinks the losses to the economies of Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea will be big .Mr. Kim says losses could be about $97-million at the moment.

Mr. Kim says fast action is necessary. He says getting the disease under control is still far away. That is because there are not enough health care workers in the affected areas. The World Bank President says the most important measure is to act quickly in order to limit economic losses.

  1. (1) What does the underlined word mean in the second paragraph?

    A . effort B . disaster C . warning D . result
  2. (2) If quick action is not taken to stop the spread of Ebola, the economic losses could reach about _______by 2015.

    A . $800-million B . $97-million C . $117-million D . $40-billion.
  3. (3) What's the main idea of the whole passage?

A . Ebola is a serious and infectious(传染的)illness. B . Large numbers of people have died from Ebola. C . People in the West Africa are in great fear of the spread of Ebola virus. D . Ebola will harm economies in the West Africa seriously without quick action.

“An apple a day keeps the doctor away.” Similarly, if we drink a little more water every day, we may find that we need to go to the doctor a lot less often. A healthy diet is made up of water and a great many different kinds of foods. We know that healthy foods like fruits, vegetables and fish, are important as they provide us with energy and fiber, without giving us too much fat and sugar. But why is water important?

The human body needs water to survive. Water is important as it carries poisons and waste out of our bodies. However, doctors advise us to drink plenty of water, much more than the small amount we need to stay alive.

Some doctors believe that water is important for our health in all kinds of ways. They believe that a great many illnesses and health problems start as a result of dehydration(脱水)—a lack of water in the body. Most people are dehydrated at least some of time, although they probably don't know it. It is surprising to learn that if we feel thirsty, we are already in the first stage of dehydration. In fact, we are advised to drink water before we feel thirsty.

These doctors think that health problems such as headaches, high blood pressure and asthma(哮喘) could be helped if people drink more water. They also believe that drinking more water can help people who are overweight. Water contains no calories so it will not make us put on weight. If we drink water, we will probably drink less sugary soft drinks such as Coca-cola. Doctors also believe that drinking more water may stop people from overeating. They say that many people think that they are hungry when they are, in fact, thirsty. Doctors suggest, therefore, that we eat less food and drink more water. There are still many health problems that cannot be solved by drinking water, so we should not stop going to seeing the doctor completely. However, if we make a decision to drink water every day, we may find that we need to go to the doctor a lot less often.

  1. (1) From the text, we know water can carry_________.

A . people eat too much sugar B . water is not important for our health C . we should go to the doctor less often D . some health problems are caused by a lack of water

A . they think they are thirsty and eat less B . they think they are hungry and eat too much C . water has no calories D . it makes them thirsty
  4. (4) Which of the following isn't mentioned in the passage?

A . Drinking more water may stop people from overeating. B . Some healthy problems start because of a lack of water. C . The amount of water a person should drink in a day. D . Fruit provides us with energy and fibre.

Medicine is the most noble of all the arts, but owing to the ignorance of those who practice it, and those who inconsiderately form a judgment of them, it is now far behind all the other arts. Their mistake appears to me to arise principally from the fact that there is no punishment for the practice of medicine except disgrace, and that does not hurt those who are familiar with it. Such persons are like the figures introduced in tragedies, for as they have the shape, and dress, and appearance of an actor, but are not actors, so also physicians are many in title but very few in reality.

Whoever is to acquire a competent knowledge of medicine ought to process the following advantages: a natural character; instruction; a favorable position for the study; early tuition; love for labor; leisure. First of all, a natural talent is required, for Nature leads the way to what is most excellent; then instruction in the art takes place, which the student must try to adopt by reflection, becoming an early pupil in a place well adapted for instruction. He must also bring to the task a love of labor and perseverance to ensure the instruction takes root.

Instruction in medicine is like the culture of the productions of the earth. For our natural character, is, as it were, the soil; the principals of our teacher are, as it were, the seed. Instruction in youth is like the planting of the seed in the ground at the proper season. Diligent study is like the cultivation of the fields; and it is time which passes on strength to all things and brings them to maturity

Having brought all these essentials to the study of medicine, and having acquired a true knowledge of it, we shall thus, in travelling around, be respected physicians not only in name but in reality. Inexperience is a bad trait, and does harm to those who possess it, nurturing either timidity or audacity(胆大安为). For timidity reveals a want of powers, and audacity a lack of skill. Physicians who are eager for power or those who are undertrained are not a blessing to a community.

Those things which are sacred or noble, are to be delivered only to sacred persons; and it is wrong to import them to the profane until they have been initiated in the mysteries of the science.

  1. (1) Based on paragraph 1, which of the following best characterizes bad physicians?
A . They are greedy. B . They are pretenders. C . They are difficult to contact. D . They are the minority.
  2. (2) According to paragraph 2, what must accompany the personal quality of a physician?
    A . A good education. B . A supportive family. C . Approval from the authority. D . Popularity in the community.
  3. (3) If the author of the passage were to use a heading for each paragraph, which heading would fit best before paragraph 3?
    A . An Herbal Treatment. B . Medicine and Gardening. C . The Growth of a Physician. D . Understanding Agriculture First.
  4. (4) Based on the underlined sentences in paragraph 5, what is the relationship between the words "sacred" and "profane"?
A . The two words are exactly the same in meaning. B . The two words are similar in meaning. C . The two words are of the same root. D . The two words are opposites.

"An apple a day keeps the doctor away" is one of the most common sayings in the English languages. This is because apples were one of the first foods that medical professionals recognized as healthytheir benefits became obvious when  quite simply, doctors found that people who ate apples were sick less often than those who did not. Today we have a more specific understanding of why apples are so beneficial to overall health.

Apples can help keep your levels of bad cholesterol (胆固醇) down. The pectin (果胶) in apples helps you to maintain cardiovascular health and reduce LDL cholesterol(which is the "bad" kind). Apples themselves do not add cholesterol to your diet and are full of water and fiber to help prevent the cholesterol in other foods you might digest. According to Health Diaries, people who eat two apples per day may lower their cholesterol by as much as 16 percent.

Apples are naturally low in calories and high in water content. Eating an apple can satisfy your hunger and keep you from reaching for high-sugar, high-calories snacks. By eating apples, you will be more able to maintain a healthy weight because they fill you up, potentially stopping you from eating food that encourages a waistline increase.

Apples contain respectable levels of boron (硼) which helps build healthy bones, and can also prevent diseases like arthritis. Apples are rich in vitamin C, which is known to help build immunity.

Studies have shown that apples can decrease the risk of breast cancer, colon cancer, and liver cancer. One theory is that the apple skins are responsible for this, so be sure not to peel your apple before you eat them, as you could remove some of the health benefits.

  1. (1) By eating apples we can get many benefits EXCEPT     .
    A . lowering the cholesterol B . keeping a healthy weight C . building immunity D . preventing heart disease

Teenagers who spend hours in front of the television may have a poorer diet as young adults.

A study, which included nearly 1, 400 high school students, found those who watched TV for five hours or more per day had less healthy diets than peers (同龄人) five years later. Why does this happen? Should the parents take any measures?

On the one hand, people who spend a lot of time in front of the TV, especially teenagers, may snack more, and that may affect their long-term diet quality.

On the other hand, TV ads for fast food, sweets and snacks tempt teenagers to eat more of those foods. And TV time might also replace exercise time for some kids.

Lead researcher Dr. Daheia J. Barr-Anderson, of the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, told Reuters Health a clear correlation between TV time during high school and diet quality in young adulthood. While the heaviest TV viewers were eating the most junk food, those who'd watched less than two hours per day had the highest intake (吸收) of fruits, vegetables, whole grains and high-calcium food. In her opinion, parents should limit and monitor TV viewing.

As far as I am concerned, children should watch no more than two hours of television per day. And parents should set a good example by eating right, being physically active and curbing their own TV time.

  1. (1) What's the best title for this passage?
A . People should keep away from TV to keep healthy. B . Teenagers' TV time may affect their diets later. C . Why do teenagers like TV". D . Parents' own habits may affect children later.
  2. (2) According to the passage, heavy TV viewers tend to ________.
A . eat more fruits B . eat less junk food C . take in fewer vegetables D . take in high-calcium food
  3. (3) What suggestion does the author give the parents?
A . They must watch TV with their children. B . They should forbid the children to watch TV. C . They should pay attention to nutrition in diets. D . They can't do what they don't want their children to do.
  4. (4) The underlined word "curbing" in the last paragraph can be replaced by ________.

More primary care doctors in a community (社区)appear to lead to improved life expectancy for people living there, though a lack of such physicians across U.S. could be a cause of concern for overall population health in years to come.

For the study, researchers looked at physician counts per 100,000 people in a range covering 2005 to 2015 in the U. S., along with life expectancy and specific causes of death. They found that an increase of 10 primary care physicians per 100,000 population was associated with a 51. 5-day increase in life expectancy, while an increase of 10 specialty physicians per 100, 000 population increased life expectancy by 19. 2 days. An increase in primary care physicians also was associated with reductions of many deaths including heart diseases and cancers.

Along with those findings, though, the study said many communities did not have primary care physicians in 2015, with the decline in supply more prominent in rural areas than their urban areas. Many believe that a well-functioning health care system requires a solid foundation of primary care, however, payment difference between primary care and technical specialties continue to dispirit the U. S. primary care physician workforce.

"Higher pay and lifestyle preferences lead most students to choose non-primary care fields, even when their hearts say primary care," the study said. "We must turn this trend around with practical changes in physician payment policy; no amount of superb primary care training or creative practice reform will prevent further declines in primary care physician, which will lead to worsening health for the United States."

The study's researchers conclude that future research should focus on the "quality and cover of primary care, types of primary care physician training and service offerings, and effective access rather than just supply".

We all know that water is tasteless. But it happens from time to time: you pick up the bottle of water you didn't finish yesterday, and it tastes strange. Most often, you tend to drop the bottle in the trash bin, believing that the water has gone bad. But is it true?

According to Time, of course not, taste has little to do with quality of water.

According to Time, when water is exposed to the air for 12 hours, carbon dioxide interacts with the H2O in the water, and the pH value lowers slightly. As a result, the water has a different taste.

"But it's most likely safe to drink," Norwegian expert Truls Krogh told Science Nordic. "If the water is covered and of good quality to start with, in principle it can last a thousand years. That's because when water is fresh, it contains little organic matter. As long as water is held in clean glasses or bottles, no pollutants will enter it to harm our health."

People in countries like the US, the UK and Australia usually drink tap water. According to Time, if tap water is drunk within six months, the chlorine (氯气) in the water will be enough to kill any bacteria and keep it safe to drink.

However, there are also some exceptions. If you accidentally put your fingers into water or store water in unclean containers day after day, microorganism (微生物) will enter the water.

With the help of surrounding temperature, and sunlight streaming through windows, these microorganisms multiply quickly. Sooner or later, the water will be in the charge of the unfriendly bacteria. And if you drink the water too often, then you're more likely to be ill.

And what about water in plastic bottles? Heat and plastic are a bad combination, US researcher Kellogg Schwab stresses. When plastic bottles are used at high temperatures, they produce a chemical called BPA. BPA is something that affects hormones (荷尔蒙) and research has tentatively linked it to "several health damage, including heart disease and cancer", Time reported.

Schwab suggests replacing disposable (一次性的) plastic bottles with the refillable containers made of metal or glass to deal with BPA.

  1. (1) The purpose of the first paragraph is to ________________.
    A . show an example B . draw a conclusion C . analyze a phenomenon D . introduce a topic
  2. (2) Which of the following may Truls Krogh agree?
A . If the water tastes different, we shouldn't drink it. B . The water held in a clean container is likely safe to drink. C . Although kept fresh, water may still have much organic matter. D . Covered water can last for a thousand years.
  3. (3) What can we infer from the passage?
A . BPA does little harm to our health. B . Tap water is always safe to drink. C . Microorganisms are easy to produce in the heat. D . Disposable plastic bottles have been banned already.
  4. (4) What can be the best title of the passage?
A . Why Water is Tasteless B . How to Get Clean Water C . Does Water Really Go Bad? D . Learn to Protect Water

Even though one out of three American children live within a mile of their school, almost not half of those students often bike or walk to class, scientists report.

Children who live in the South, in country areas, or who have college-educated parents, are among those least likely to bike or walk to school, notes the report, which is published in July.

Sarah Martin and her workmates at the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) studied materials from more than 7, 000 children between 9 and 15 years of age.

They found that almost 35 percent of the children lived within one mile of their schools. Children between 11 and 13 years old were more likely to walk or bike than 9-year-olds. Children whose parents had a high school education were more likely to bike or walk than children with college-educated parents.

"The majority of children are missing an opportunity to increase daily physical activity," Martin said in a prepared statement.

According to the CDC, nearly one in five (18. 8 percent) children between 6 and 11 years old are overweight. Increased daily physical activity is one of the methods the CDC gives to help deal with obesity (肥胖)in children.

Martin said that there are all kinds of reasons why children in city areas might be more likely to bike or walk. They said the fact is that schools may be in mixed-use neighborhoods where it is more possible to bike or walk, compared with other places where there may be fewer safe sidewalks.

  1. (1) Sarah Martin and her workmates found that         .
A . younger children would like to bike or walk to school B . older children are much stronger than the younger children C . kids whose parents received less education walk more D . some children are becoming much lazier than others
  2. (2) According to the CDC, many children are overweight because they         .
A . eat too much every day B . have unhealthy meals C . are too busy to travel D . take less physical activity
  3. (3) From the passage, we can infer that         .
A . children should receive a better education B . some children don't bike or walk because there are fewer safe sidewalks C . it is unnecessary for children to walk to school D . children in country areas have more chance to bike or walk than those in cities
  4. (4) What section of a newspaper may this passage be taken from?
    A .  Education. B . Culture. C . Sports. D . Health.

A study shows exposure (暴露) to more light during the day and less light at night is important for people to get healthy sleep because it helps to keep the right body clock. The results suggest that in the office environment, being exposed to either sunlight or electric lights that are rich in short wave blue light may be important for the health of workers.

To see whether the office workers get enough light to regulate (调节) their sleep wake cycle, researchers found the participants (参与者) in five government office buildings across the United States. A total of 109 people working at the offices wore light-measuring devices (仪器) for one week to do an experiment in summer, and 81 of these participants reduplicated the experiment in winter once again. The office workers wrote down their sleep and wake time. They also answered questions of their mood and sleep quality at the end of each study period.

Researchers found that people who were exposed to lots of sunlight during the morning hours, between 8 am and noon, fell asleep more quickly at night compared to those exposed to low light in the morning. Office workers who were exposed to high levels of light all day, from 8 am to 5 pm, also fell asleep more quickly.

Poor-quality sleep has been linked to health problems. Researchers say there are many easy things we can do during the day to increase our exposure to sunlight, such as looking out of the window and walking out for light during the day, especially during the morning and lunch time.

  1. (1) Where did the participants of the experiment work for?
    A . The government. B . The car factory. C . The local school. D . The airline company.
  2. (2) What does the underlined word "reduplicated" in paragraph 2 mean?
    A . Reused. B . Released. C . Repeated. D . Requested.
  3. (3) What can people do to make themselves fall asleep more easily?
A . Eat much food. B . Drink lots of water at night. C . Talk with friends before sleeping. D . Expose themselves to sunlight during the day.
  4. (4) What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A . Looking outside at night is helpful in falling asleep. B . Staying outside all day is bad for people's health. C . The quality of sleep influences people's health. D . The sunlight makes people hungry during the day.

Daily life has its satisfactions: The perfect reply to a friend's text message; The first after-work drink; The sound of another government U-turn. But do any really compare to the joy of going to sleep? That moment when the mess of 21st-century existence disappears into the non-judgmental hug of a bed?

Somehow we have pushed this pleasure to the back of the queue. A third of American adults report sleeping less than the recommended seven hours. Many of us feel under-rested. For some, the problem is modern life; emails, to-do lists and screens. For other people, it's the demands of work or family. Then there are those who can't sleep when they try. In 1895 the Earl of Rosebery resigned after barely a year as British prime minister, unable to overcome his insomnia(失眼眠症). Up to 1 in 10 adults meet the criteria for insomnia.

Stressing ourselves out about a lack of sleep can make the problem worse. In his book Overcoming Insomnia and Sleep Problems, Oxford professor Colin Espie writes about "orthosomnia", where people are so focused with sleeping well that they become too anxious to do so. The marketing of sleeping aids adds to this.

Espie says we each have a sleep pattern that, like a shoe size, we figure out through trial and error. Genetically, some humans are larks(百灵鸟) and some are owls; the larks may just have better cardiovascular(心血管的)health. For an owl to try to fight their natural schedule, and sleep earlier, wouldn't necessarily help.

Once we weren't urged to sleep until we were dead. Now we are told to sleep or we'll be dead. Nowadays sleep is becoming something that people hope to excel at. About that I'm unconvinced. A good night's sleep is a great pleasure. As far as possible, it should also remain a simple one.

  1. (1) What does Paragraph 2 mainly tell us about sleep problem?
A . The criteria for insomnia. B . The dangers of poor sleep. C . The causes of inadequate sleep. D . The sleep situation of American people.
  2. (2) What can we learn about "orthosomnia" in Paragraph 3?
A . It is caused by extreme anxiety. B . It will worsen the sleep problem. C . It refers to the sleep environment. D . It can be improved by sleeping aids.
  3. (3) What can we infer from Espie's words?
A . Sleep pattern is related to humans' gene. B . The owls have better cardiovascular health. C . The sleep pattern of the larks is healthier. D . It is necessary to fight our natural schedule.
  4. (4) What does the underlined phrase "excel at" mean in the last paragraph?
    A . Figure out. B . Be good at. C . Give way to. D . Compete with.

Why do people lie? Many psychologists agree that lying can start from childhood. There are various reasons why children make false statements. They usually tell untruthful stories to cover up the mistakes that they have done in the past. Lying is also a way to avoid receiving punishments from parents. If parents fail to reprimand their children for making up false stories, then there is a possibility that they will continue to lie during their teenage years.

Teenagers lie because they want to be accepted by their friends. This is the main reason why they create stories that are not true just to become presentable and acceptable to other people. In some instances, teenagers tell untruthful statements to avoid criticisms from their families and friends.

As teenagers grow, lying becomes one of their habits. Their knowledge on making up untruthful stories becomes more developed. People lie in workplaces if they fail to meet the deadlines and if they fail to accomplish and do their tasks efficiently. Some of the common lies made in workplaces are getting sick and having emergencies at home. The danger involved in frequent lying is when it becomes a character. Frequent lying causes the development of the condition known to doctors as pathological lying.

Pathological lying is a mental health condition, which is associated with individuals who have the urge to tell untruthful statements. Patients suffering from it make up stories about everything and anything. These individuals pretend to meet the standards of other people who they want to please. These patients cheat other people because it gives them an unexplained pleasure. One of the best ways of treating pathological liars is to help them tell true statements and stories at all times. This may be hard for them, but as they are accustomed to it, they will start to realize that they will be more accepted by their families and other people if they stop themselves from making up false stories.

  1. (1) What does the underlined word "reprimand'' in Paragraph 1 mean?
    A . satisfy B . criticize C . discourage D . praise
  2. (2) Why is Pathological lying a disease?
A . Because the patients can't help lying. B . Because the patients lose interest in everything. C . Because the patients are critical about themselves. D . Because the patients have the urge to please others.
  3. (3) What are patients suffering pathological lying most likely to do?
A . They really want to play jokes on others. B . They often suffer from some other diseases. C . They usually want to show off themselves by making some statements. D . They always like making up pleasing stories.
  4. (4) How does the writer explain pathological lying?
A . By showing some typical examples. B . By predicting the future consequences. C . By analyzing its causes and development. D . By listing a group of phenomena.

Two years ago, Wendy Hasnip, 47, experienced a brain injury that left her speechless for two weeks. When she finally recovered, she found herself talking with what seemed to be a French accent. "I phoned a friend the other day, and she spent the first ten minutes laughing," Hasnip said at the time. "While I have nothing against the French, this is not me."

Hasnip suffered from foreign accent syndrome, a rare condition in which people find themselves speaking their own language like someone from a foreign country. The condition usually occurs in people who have experienced a head injury or a stroke—a sudden loss of consciousness, or movement caused by a blocked or broken blood vessel in the brain.

The condition was first identified during the Second World War in a Norwegian woman whose head was hit by shrapnel during an attack by the German military. The woman recovered but was left with a German-sounding accent, to the horror of fellow villagers who shunned her after that.

Researchers at Oxford University have now discovered that victims of foreign accent syndrome suffer from damage to several parts of the brain. The combined effect of that damage makes victims lengthen certain syllables, mispronounce sounds, and alter their normal voice. Those changes in speech add up to what sounds like a foreign accent, says one of the researchers, Jennifer Gurd, an expert in the scientific study of nerves and relevant diseases.

Another researcher, John Coleman, an expert in language, says victims of the syndrome don't acquire a true foreign accent. Their strangely altered speech only resembles the foreign accent with which it has a few sounds in common.

  1. (1) When Wendy Hasnip spoke her native language with a French accent, she felt ___.
    A . upset B . excited C . scared D . satisfied
  2. (2) Foreign accent syndrome usually occurs in people ___.
A . who were once hit by shrapnel during a military attack B . who were once attacked by horrible fellow villagers C . whose blood vessels were once blocked or broken D . whose brain was once damaged in several parts
  3. (3) The word "shunned" in Paragraph 3 is closest in meaning to "___".
    A . got rid of B . laughed at C . stayed away from D . laid blame on
  4. (4) What can we infer from the passage about foreign accent syndrome?
A . It can't be cured at present. B . It helps victims pick up a foreign language. C . It will disappear in the end. D . It is just a change in the length of syllables.
