Marmi, my big sister, was eagerly looking for a pup(小狗) to look after and love all her life, so she would ask Mummy many times for a pup of her own, but the answer was always no. You see, my mum is not very fond of dogs, never has been, and always says they're too big a responsibility. She's just not a dog person. Well, that didn't stop my sister from looking or hoping for a dog. She used to search online for her favourite breed(品种). Until one day Marni found some Cavapoo pups advertised for sale. She immediately showed Mummy and begged to go and see them. Not sure how my sister persuaded her, but to our surprise, Mummy said we could go and have a look at them but not to get high hopes. Marni rushed everyone in the car before Mummy changed her mind. Off we sped to the advertised breeder's house which luckily wasn't too far. We got to the house and I bet I could hear my sister's heart dancing with excitement. As we rang the doorbell, we could hear cute little barks coming from inside. We went in and saw lots of little black pups excitedly jumping around. There were other people there too, so we needed to choose one fast if you know what I mean. It was rather crowded but the breeder let us hold and cuddle(搂抱) the pups. The breeder handed a little confident pup to Marni. The little pup seemed an old friend with my sister. But after a lot of cuddles, Mummy said we had to go and would have to think about it.

Once there was a slave named Androcles, who was so badly treated by his master that he resolved to run away from him. He therefore secretly left his master's house and hid himself in a forest, some miles distant from the city.
After wandering about for some time, he came to a large cave, and overcome by hunger and tiredness, he lay down in it, and soon fell fast asleep.
He was suddenly awakened by the roar of a wild beast; a great lion stood right at the mouth of the cave. There was no way he could escape!
Androcles expected nothing else than to be at once torn to pieces, but to his great surprise, the lion came gently towards him, without showing any signs of anger. It gave forth a low and mournful (悲哀的) sound, as if it were begging for his assistance. As the lion approached him, he noticed that one of its feet was swollen.
He then went up to the lion, took hold of the wounded paw (爪子), and examined it as a surgeon would examine a patient. He was not long in finding out the cause of the swelling; for he saw in the ball of the foot a very large thorn (刺). The slave pulled out the thorn, and pressed out of the wound a quantity of matter, which gave the lion immediate relief.
Then, the lion began to show his gratitude by every means in his power. He jumped about like a playful spaniel (西班牙猎犬), wagged his great tail, and licked the hands and feet of his physician. From that moment Androcles became his guest; the lion always shared his prey.
The slave continued to live like this for several months. At length, wandering carelessly through the woods, he was seized by a company of soldiers who were sent by the master to search for him.

Wrapping paper flew everywhere as Cali opened her gift. The box had a picture of a pretty girl. She was wearing white ice skates and turning around a frozen pond.
Cali looked up at her aunt and uncle with her big brown eyes. "Figure skates? Wow! How nice of you!
But," the little girl hesitated, "… but I don't know how to skate." She looked embarrassed. "Don't worry," said Aunt Lisa. "That's the fun part — learning how to do it!"
"That's right," said Uncle George. "We will take you to the ice rink (冰场) and all go skating together."
"I don't know…" said Cali. She wasn't too sure she was going to be able to do it. Sometimes she had a hard time learning new things. She looked again at the happy girl on the box. It did look like fun. Cali imagined herself moving and turning on the ice like a real figure skater. "Okay," she agreed. "Let's do it!"
The next day Cali went to the skating rink with her aunt and uncle. Her eyes twinkled and her face lit up with excitement as she looked at the other skaters around her. She sat down on the bench and slipped her feet into the skates. Holding the strings in her fingers, she could not figure out how to tie them up. "I don't know how to do it," she said. She felt sad that this was another thing she couldn't do.
"Let me show you." Her aunt bent down on one knee, explaining how to put the strings around the small hooks ( 钩 子 ). Then she tied them into a tight bow. "Now, you do the other skate yourself. I'll help you if you need it." Cali bent over the skate and did what her aunt had showed her. Her tongue stuck out of the side of her mouth as she paid attention. After a few tries, she worked out how to cross the strings around the hooks. Her aunt helped make sure the strings were nice and tight. "You did it!" smiled her aunt, patting Cali on the back.

Paragraph 1: "Time to hit the ice," her uncle said.
Paragraph 2: Oof! She fell down, hard.
It was a cold December day. After saying goodbye to his neighbour, David, Tom set out for a run with his dog, Taz. As a professional athlete, Tom often went for training runs by himself and had done this particular route many times before, but that day something unusual happened to him.
About an hour later, Tom hit some black ice. He found himself slipping down the rock face, which became steeper (陡峭的) and steeper until suddenly he was in free fall. He fell 60 feet into the canyon (峡谷) , landing on grass and dry branches. If he'd missed them, there was, no way he would have survived. He could feel his legs, so he knew he wasn't paralyzed (瘫痪的) but he was in great pain. Taz had managed to find his way back to Tom, so Tom knew there must be a way out of the canyon, but he couldn't stand or even crawl (爬). He later learned that he had broken his right leg.
Tom shouted for help, and tried to pull himself forward. Every inch was an effort. It took him five hours to go a quarter of a mile. Eventually it got so dark that he couldn't see where he was going. He decided to stay next to a river which he could drink some water from. All he had on him were his jogging clothes, a water bottle, two boxes of medicine, a bar of chocolate, and a shower cap which adventure racers often wear to prevent heat loss.
At night, the temperature dropped below freezing. Tom couldn't go to sleep or he would die, so he stayed awake lifting his head a few inches over and over. Throughout the night, Taz curled up next to him and kept him company. The next morning, he couldn't move any more. He tried to stay positive. He was sure somebody would find he was missing or hear him screaming for help. But there was nobody around.
Paragraph 1:
As time went by, Tom felt himself growing weaker and he knew he must take action.
Paragraph 2:
About three hours later, Taz returned and Tom heard an engine in the distance.
I always dreamed of giving someone a surprise, one that will be remembered for a lifetime. Well, thanks to a little determination, some luck, and some help of Christmas Spirit, my dream became a reality.
My family is Canadian, although my sister moved down to Australia a few years ago to further her study. She was graduating just before Christmas. However, due to my own school schedule back home, I would not be able to make it in time for her graduation. She was understandably disappointed, and I felt guilty that I was not able to be there for her on this most special occasion.
While I was talking to my school advisor about my term paper the week before my sister's graduation, our conversation changed toward Christmas plans. When I mentioned that I would be missing my sister's graduation by less than 48 hours, she said, "Well, if you want to go, I have no problem with it, so go ahead!"
On hearing the words, I couldn't believe my luck! I nearly jumped for joy. "Just make sure you get permission from administration(管理部门)", she added. What she said immediately made my heart sink. The administration at my school was well-known for refusing any sort of time-off requests, let alone last-minute requests, which would undoubtedly draw nothing but anger. I almost didn't bother asking, because I knew it would be hopeless and a waste of time. Plus, I knew the answer already: no. But something in me decided to try, just in case. Maybe it was the hope that the Christmas Spirit would somehow affect the administrative office at this time of year.
When I returned home to find the reply from the administration in my email box, I prepared myself for disappointment.
