Have you ever had to overcome an extreme challenge in your life?
My teenage years had been insane. From schoolwork to athletics, I had always been running around. Everything was so difficult.
Throughout my hectic teenage years I have been faced with many extreme challenges that have required extreme focus and hard work to overcome. If it hadn't been for hard work, none of these challenges that I faced would have been conquered.
Two years ago, when I was a freshman in high school, I dealt with an extremely significant injury. This took place in my tennis tournament in January. In the climax of my match, I jolted my back to the left and soon after felt a sharp, painful shock run through my spine. I knew at that difficult moment I seriously injured my back. I was rushed off the court and my parents made an appointment with an orthopedist (矫形外科医生) for the next morning.
I walked into the office extremely nervous and suffering from excruciating pain. My tennis season for school started in three months and I absolutely needed to build up the strength.
After about twenty minutes of waiting in the office, which felt like an eternity, the doctor walked in to examine my Xrays. With a sorrowful face, the doctor looked into mine and my mother's eyes and said," There is a 50/50 chance that Lucas will be able to participate in this years tennis season. Lucas broke his L5 vertebrae in his lower back." My heart dropped and I felt a sadness come over me. The doctor said that I would be sitting out of physical activity for two and a half to three months.
Those three months were the longest three months of my life. I was so eager to get back to practices for the season. Every day, I would think about how it was going to be when I was fully healthy. I asked myself," Am I going to be out of shape? Should I even play this year? I probably won't have a successful season."
From that dreadful day on, I decided that I was going to put in the work to be back in top form and have a successful season.
Paragraph 1:
After I got the" all clear" from my orthopedist I was going to get to work.
Paragraph 2:
My hard work proved to be very effective.
On March 16, 2020 my left leg was injured. At that time, I thought it was a simple injury, but a medical doctor later told me that it was a serious fracture(骨折) and that I would have to be in bed for three months. It was shocking for me. I'd never spent more than 8 hours in bed before.
I am a full-time social worker and have many projects that require my active involvement(参加). I hardly had time to visit my home, but my fractured leg stopped all things. I had to stay at home for a long time. It was bad and also good. It stopped all my work, but it also gave me an opportunity to spend time with myself and my family.
I was sad and worried. How would I spend three months in bed? Who would care for me? Early in my injury and before my operation, one of my friends offered his room in a rented house. I was grateful for his kind support. He did all things for me. I didn't have any other choices.
I realized in my mind that I should be positive and change my lifestyle according to the situation. It was not so simple or easy. I needed to be more focused and calm. I began to practice thinking alone, read books, create more poems and talk with friends.
There were so many ups and downs in my confidence. So many times negative thoughts bothered me. I felt very sad, but I often got support from my family and friends. During this difficult period, lots of good things also happened to me. I spent so much time with myself that I had plenty of opportunities to read some good books and improve myself, while receiving good care from my friends and family.
After the operation on my leg, I realized I needed additional care to recover, so I had to stay at Kindness Home, near my family.

Jennifer, a senior high school student, was driving the old blue sedan(轿车) owned by her father. She lived on a farm about ten miles away from downtown and used the car back and forth every day.
Jennifer had driven into town that night to see a basketball game between Rockets and Warriors. Now she was on her way home, thinking about the game-winning shot by Harden. As she pulled away from the stadium, she noticed a red pick-up truck follow her out of the parking lot. A few minutes later the truck was still behind her.
"I guess we're going in the same direction," she whispered to herself. Anxious and suspicious, she began to watch the truck in her mirror. When she changed her speed, the driver of the truck changed his speed too! When she passed a car, so he did.
Then he turned on his high beams, flooding her car with light. He left them on for almost a minute. "He probably wants to pass me," she tried to comfort herself. But this time she was becoming uneasy. Usually, Jennifer drove home over a back road. It was a narrow and bumpy country road with no few lights, so not too many people went that way. But when she turned onto that road, so did the truck.
"I've got to get away from him," she was seized with sudden trembling and became deathly pale, feeling cold sweat flowing down her back, and without a second thought, Jennifer began to slam on the gas and picked up her speed. Then he turned his high beams on again. After a minute, he turned them off. Then he turned them on again and off again.
She changed gears(档位) and drove even faster, but the truck driver stayed right behind her. Then he turned his high beams on again. Once more her car was ablaze(明亮的)with light. "What is he doing?" she wondered. "What does he want?" Then he turned them off again. But a minute later he had them on again, and he left them on.

Dear Alpha,
Can you help me, please? I have tried to stop smoking several times. I am OK for two days and then I feel really sick and irritable and I have to start smoking again. I know smoking is a bad habit, but I just can't seem to give it up. Do you have any useful tips?

One time, the teachers at a school wanted to teach the students about airplanes. While all airplanes can fly, some are able to fly farther than others. This is because not all airplanes are built the same. For example, a fighter plane looks very different from a plane that people fly in when they want to go on a holiday. The teachers wondered how they could make students understand this.
Then, the science teacher, Mr Moose, decided that the school should have a paper airplane contest. Every student would design a paper airplane. They would stand in a line in the playground behind the school. The students would take turns throwing their airplanes. The student whose airplane went the farthest would win.
When Mr Moose announced the paper airplane contest to the students, they were very excited. A student named Paul, who was on the school sports team, said to everyone else that his airplane would win. “I am the strongest, ” Paul said, “so I will be able to throw my airplane the farthest. ”
However, while Paul was saying this, another student, Brian, was thinking how he could win. Brian did not play any sports and was not very strong. But he loved airplanes and really wanted to win the contest.
Brian realized what he had to do. He went to the store and bought a big stack (叠) of paper. When he got home, he took the paper into his backyard. He took a piece of paper and folded an airplane. It didn't go very far, so Brian took another piece and folded (折叠) another airplane and threw it. This airplane went a little farther. Brian kept folding different kinds of airplanes and throwing them. Some went very far and some did not. Finally, when Brian had used all the paper, he walked up to the airplane that had flown the farthest and picked it up.
The next day was the contest. All the students lined up. Everyone took turns. After a while, everyone had thrown except Paul and Brian. Paul went first. With a loud yell, he threw the airplane into the sky. It went farther than every other airplane. Everyone cheered.

Finally, it was Brian's turn.
Brian won because he tried out many solutions to the problem of how to make an airplane fly very far.
WHAT KEPT THE NEW CHIMNEY(烟囱) WAITING
A new chimney was going to be built on Grandpa's house, and the boys were in a state of great excitement. They were always excited when something was going on. “This would be splendid,” Wayne said.
“Mike is coming, you know, to mix the mud and carry it up the ladder to the builder. He will tell us stories in the mornings,” Wayne told Casper.
“Yes,” said Casper, “and, Wayne, let's go get his tools and play we are his helpers, carrying his tools for him. Come on.” “Come on!” shouted Wayne. “The tools are placed against the kitchen wall, where he left them when he brought the things over.” On the way to the kitchen, they saw Grandpa bringing old Molly, their finest horse, to the big, blue cart(马车).That meant a beautiful ride down to the farmland. The boys forgot all about playing tool carriers. They climbed in and rode away.
“Mike is coming tomorrow, you know, Grandpa, and the builder,” said Casper. But dear old Grandpa shook his white head.
“Not tomorrow, boys. You will have to wait a bit longer. I sent word to the builder and Mike last night that they couldn't come for a few weeks longer. I have decided to put off building the chimney.”
Both the boys were disappointed.
Grandpa did not speak again at once. He was driving old Molly carefully out at the side of the cart road. The boys saw a little crippled(跛脚的) butterfly in the wheel track trying hard to spread its wings. That was why Grandpa turned off(拐弯). Grandpa's big heart had room enough in it for every live thing.
Back in the track again, further on, Grandpa said:“When we get home, boys, I will show you why we have to wait for the new chimney. You will agree with me, I know.” And Grandpa's eyes shone.
