A young couple moved into a new neighborhood. The next morning, they  (eat) breakfast, when the young wife saw her neighbor hang the wash outside.

"That laundry is not very clean," she said to her husband. "The neighbor doesn't know how to wash correctly. Perhaps she needs  (good) laundry soap." Her husband looked on, but remained  (silence). Every time her neighbor hung her wash  (dry), the young woman would make  same comments. About one month  (late), the young woman was surprised to see a nice clean wash on her neighbor's line and said to her husband, "Look! She has learned how to wash correctly. I wonder  taught her this?"

The husband said, "I got up early this morning and cleaned our windows!"

Can you see how it might be a good idea to check first to see if your windows are clean? What we see when  (watch) others depends on the purity of the windows  which we look.

Before we give any criticism, it might be a good idea to check our state of mind and ask  (we) if we are ready to see the good rather than just look for something wrong in the people we met.

A new study of 8,000 young people in the Journal of Health and Social Behavior shows that although love can make adults live healthily and happily, it is a bad thing for young people. Puppy love, (早恋) may bring stress for young people and can lead to depression. The study shows that girls become more depressed than boys, and younger girls are the worst of all.

The possible reason for the connection between love and higher risk of depression for girls is “loss of self”. According to the study, even though boys would say “lose themselves in a romantic relationship”, this “loss of self” is much more likely to lead to depression when it happens to girls. Young girls who have romantic relationships usually like hiding their feelings and opinions. They won't tell that to their parents.

Dr Marianm Kaufman, an expert on young people problems, says 15% to 20% young people will have depression during their growing. Trying romance often causes the depression. She advises kids not to jump into romance too early. During growing up, it is important for young people to build strong friendships and a strong sense of self. She also suggests the parents should encourage their kids to keep close to their friends, attend more interesting school activities and spend enough time with family.

Parents should watch for signs of depression-eating or mood changes-and if they see signs from their daughters or sons, they need to give help. The good news is that the connection between romance and depression seems to become weak with age. Love will always make us feel young, but only maturity gives us a chance to avoid its bad side effects.

  1. (1) What's the main idea of the passage?
A . Romance is a two-edged sword for adults. B . Parents should forbid their children's love. C . Romance is good for young people. D . Puppy love may bring young people depression.
  2. (2) Which of the following is more likely to have depression?
A . Careless parents whose children are deep in love. B . Young people who have a strong sense of selfishness. C . Young girls who always hide their feelings and opinions. D . Young boys whose parents watch for their behavior.
  3. (3) What can be inferred from the passage?
A . The older a woman is, the less likely she seems to lose herself in romance. B . Lacking love can lead young people to grow up more quickly. C . Early love makes young people keep close to their friends and parents. D . Parents should help their children to be aware of the signs of depression.
  4. (4) What's the author's attitude towards puppy love?
    A . confused B . disapproving C . neutral D . scared

According to a recent study, a new genetically modified rice can prevent infections of HIV, the virus responsible for the disease AIDS.

The study reports the newly-developed rice produces proteins that attach directly to the HIV virus. This process prevents the virus from mixing with human cells. The scientists say it can remove the effect of the virus and block its spreading.

The Joint United Nations Program on HIV/AIDS reports that worldwide, nearly 37 million people were living with HIV in 2017. The organization says the largest number of those are in developing countries. Nearly two-thirds of HIV cases are in Africa. Now there is no cure for HIV/AIDS though there have been developments in oral drug treatments to slow the progression of the disease.

The new study predicts the rice-based method will lead to long-term use of the anti-HIV treatment across the developing world. Researchers said the "groundbreaking" discovery is "realistically the only way" that anti-HIV combination treatments can be produced at a cost low enough for the developing world.

They say the easiest and most cost-effective way to use the rice will be to make it into a cream to be put on the skin. The HIV-fighting proteins can then enter the body through the skin. People all over the world could grow the rice and make the cream themselves. This would prevent the cost and travel required for many patients to receive treatments and medicine.

The process of changing the genetic structure of food crops has been debated for some time. Critics of genetically engineered crops believe they can harm people. The scientific team says further testing is needed to ensure that the genetic engineering process does not produce any additional chemicals that could be dangerous to people.

  1. (1) What does the author intend to do in paragraph 3?
A . Stress the urgency of HIV treatments. B . Provide some data about HIV. C . Remind readers of HIV prevention. D . Introduce HIV to the public.
  2. (2) In which way will the rice be used at the lowest cost?
A . By transforming it into proteins. B . By adding it to an oral drug. C . By attaching it to the HIV virus. D . By processing it into a cream.
  3. (3) What can we infer about the genetic engineering process?
A . It can prevent infections of HIV. B . It can produce dangerous chemicals. C . It still requires perfecting. D . It applies to the developed world.
  4. (4) From which is the text probably taken?
    A . A biology textbook. B . A health magazine. C . A social webpage. D . A first aid brochure.

I do love your chicken!"

She then asked for the restaurant's forgiveness, since she felt someone else had already forgiven her. She said, "Anyway, God has forgiven me and I hope you will too. I will not be so quick to take so much next time." Lady, you are MORE than forgiven! You are on your way to being great!

Darwin noted that some human emotional expressions might have started as part of a physiological function: for example, exposing the teeth to bite food. The function, however, took on meaning and became a form of communication which signals anger.

The same may be true for the animals. Baby monkeys cry for attention. They also cry to signal to an adult that they want to be carried.

"Chimpanzees do make upset voice when they are being weaned (断奶) by their mothers or have lost their mothers or another individual, " says Anne Pusey, a professor at the University of Minnesota. "They whimper (呜咽) and cry and scream. When we hear these calls, the emotion involved seems obvious. However, they do not weep in the sense of producing tears. "

The Iowan researchers can cause the same crying sounds by producing large decreases and then increases in blood flow. The blood flow also goes down when baby rats get cold. Thus, they conclude baby rats cry in the same way that we sneeze. Of course the rat baby could be crying because he's cold and wants his mother to know.

  1. (1) According to the first paragraph, what kind of emotion does "exposing the teeth" express?
    A . Disappointment. B . Excitement. C . Anger. D . Happiness.
  2. (2) Which is one probable reason why young chimpanzees might be crying?
A . They meet their brother. B . They have nothing to eat. C . They are being breast-fed. D . They are parted from their mother.
  3. (3) Under what circumstance will baby rats cry just like humans' sneeze?
A . Their blood flow is decreased. B . They feel cold and long for affection. C . Their blood flow is increased. D . Their mother brings them back home.
  4. (4) Where is the passage most likely taken from?
    A . An animal journal. B . A physiology book. C . A health magazine. D . A cultural newspaper.

An increase of just 2℃ in global temperatures could make the world considerably drier and more desert-like, new research has warned.

More than a quarter of the world's land surface, home to more than 1.5 billion people, would become more arid and droughts and wildfires could be widespread. Limiting global warming to 1.5℃ would dramatically reduce the percentage of the Earth's surface affected, scientists found.

"Aridification (干旱化) would emerge over 20 to 30 percent of the world's land surface by the time the global temperature change reaches 2℃",said Dr Manoj Joshi from the University of East Anglia's School of Environmental Sciences and one of the study's co-authors.

The research team studied projections from 27 global climate models and identified areas of the world where aridity will greatly change. The most affected areas are parts of South East Asia, Southern Europe, Southern Africa, Central America and Southern Australia. These areas are home to more than .20 percent of the world's population — that's over 1.5 billion people.

The study looked at the current rate of global temperature increase and compared it to data from before the industrial revolution. The world has already warmed by 1℃since then. Two thirds of the affected regions could avoid significant aridification if warming is limited to 1.5℃, researchers found.

The Paris Agreement, which was first signed in 2015, is an international agreement to control climate change. It hopes to hold the increase in the global average temperature to well below 2℃ and to pursue efforts to limit the temperature increase to 1.5℃.

But the local protectionism makes it possible that the world may become drier and the horrific scenes of the Californian wildfires may become more common. The fire burned more than 440 square miles of Ventura and Santa Barbara counties and destroyed more than 1,000 structures after breaking out in early December.

  1. (1) What should we do to prevent aridification?
A . We should limit the temperature rise to 2℃. B . We should limit the temperature rise to 1.5℃. C . We should limit the industrial development. D . We should limit the global population.
  2. (2) Which country is most likely to be affected by aridification?
    A . China. B . Russia. C . Canada. D . Philippine.
  3. (3) Why does the author mention the Californian wildfires in the text?
A . To show the harm of aridification. B . To emphasize the loss of the fire. C . To support the local protectionism. D . To tell us wildfires are common.
  4. (4) What is Dr Manoj's attitude towards the global temperature change?
    A . Indifferent. B . Approving. C . Concerned. D . Unclear.

When it comes to friends, I desire those who will share my happiness, who possess wings of their own and who will fly with me. I seek friends whose qualities illuminate(照亮)me and train me up for love. It is for these people that I reserve the glowing hours, too good not to share.

When I was in the eighth grade, I had a friend. We were shy and “too serious” about our studies when it was becoming fashionable with our classmates to learn acceptable social behaviors. We said little at school, but she would come to my house and we would sit down with pencils and paper, and one of us would say: “Let’s start with a train whistle today.” We would sit quietly together and write separate poems or stories that grew out of a train whistle. Then we would read them aloud. At the end of that school year, we, too, were changing into social creatures and the stories and poems stopped.

When I lived for a time in London, I had a friend. He was in despair (失望) and I was in despair. But our friendship was based on the idea in each of us that we would be sorry later if we did not explore this great city because we had felt bad at the time. We met every Sunday for five weeks and found many excellent things. We walked until our despairs disappeared and then we parted. We gave London to each other.

For almost four years I have had a remarkable friend whose imagination illuminates mine. We write long letters in which we often discover our strangest selves. Each of us appears, sometimes in a funny way, in the other’s dreams. She and I agree that, at certain times, we seem to be parts of the same mind. In my most interesting moments, I often think: “Yes, I must tell….”We have never met.

It is such comforting companions I wish to keep. One bright hour with their kind is worth more to me than the lifetime services of a psychologist(心理学家),who will only fill up the healing(愈合的)silence necessary to those darkest moments in which I would rather be my own best friend.

4. In the eighth grade, what the author did before developing proper social behavior was to ______.

A. our exploration of London was a memorable gift to both of us

B. we were unwilling to tear ourselves away from London

C. our unpleasant feeling about London disappeared

D. we parted with each other in London

6. According to Paragraph 4, the author and her friend _______.

A. call each other regularly                                  B. have similar personalities

C. enjoy writing to each other                              D. dream of meeting each other

7. What is the best title for the passage?

A. Unforgettable Experiences                               B. Remarkable Imagination

C. Lifelong Friendship                                         D. Noble Companions

Everyone knows that good time management skills are important to students if you want to do well in school.  36  The skills listed below are quite important.

You should have the ability to say “no”. A party this weekend? A cool club to join? An overnight trip on Saturday? A quick pizza with your classmates that turns into 3 hours of just hanging out? Learning to say “no” can save you a lot of time. But it is not easy to say “no”. You should develop some good skills in saying “no”.  37  .

You shouldn’t spare time for all the fun activities. High schools are amazing because there is always something fun for you to take part in. Unfortunately, you cannot spend time on all of the fun activities.   38     You can go there when you finish your homework. In this way, you needn’t feel guilty about enjoying yourself.

39   Some students like putting off things. This is a bad habit. You may end up with too many tasks one day. If you have a task, don’t wait to get started until the last week, because you may not know what to do at all if you have too many tasks and you may end up in crisis.

40   Staying up a little too late? Maybe not eating a healthy dinner every night of the week? In order to keep in good health, you have to check on time so as to be energetic. Practicing a little self-care can really go a long way towards making sure you can have enough passion (激情) for your work with your limited time while in school.

A. You should keep your health in check.

B. Choose the one that you like most.

C. Try your best to get rid of your bad habits.

D. You should avoid putting off your tasks.

E. But what skills are needed for good time management?

F. Here are some tips to help you learn to say "no".

G. It is very good for your time management.
