When the morning sun looks in through your bedroom window, do you jump out of bed? Or do you roll over and groan? Enough sleep can make the difference between a great day and a terrible one!

A good night's sleep doesn't just happen. You need to prepare for it.  First, go to bed at the same time every day, and get up at the same time. If you

haven't gotten a good night's sleep, don't oversleep the next morning. Get up at your regular time. Sleeping late for just a couple of days can change your body clock to a different cycle. You don't want that if you have a set daily schedule!

Also, avoid big meals at night.  Your stomach works hard to digest those fatty foods, and that may keep you up.

Your body produces a chemical called melatonin (褐黑色素) that helps you sleep. Light affects the amount of melatonin your body makes . So at night turn off your TV and computer. Also, don't read from a backlit device like an iPad. Some scientists think that the light from those devices stops your body from making melatonin.

Maybe you can't sleep or you wake up in the middle of the night.  Get up and do something relaxing elsewhere. Then go back to bed when you bed when you-feel sleepy. If you worry a lot, make a list of things you need to do the next day. Do that an hour before bed. That way you get your worrying out of the way before you go to bed.

A. It produces more in the evening and less in the daytime.

B. Don't just lie in bed.

C. So stay away from smart phones and iPads.

D. Various experts have given tips to help.

China is one of the first countries to breed a medical culture. In comparison with Western methods, traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) adopts a vastly different approach. For thousands of years, Chinese people have accumulated rich experience in fighting all sorts of diseases, therefore forming a unique medical theory under the guidance of ancient Chinese philosophies (哲学).

The core behind TCM is that the human body's life is the consequence (结果) of the balance between Yin and Yang. Yang functions to safeguard us against outer harm, and Yin is the inner base to store and provide energy. When the balance between the two aspects is disturbed, people fall ill.

One of the traditional techniques of TCM, acupuncture (针刺疗法) means insertion of needles into superficial (表面的) structures of the body—usually at acupoints (穴位)—to restore the Yin Yang balance. It is often accompanied by moxibustion (艾灸疗法), which involves burning mugwort on or near the skin at an acupoint.

Acupuncture and moxibustion have aroused the interest of international medical science circles. And TCM is gradually gaining worldwide recognition. The WHO issued a document in 2002 that appealed to more than 180 countries to adopt TCM as an alternative in their medical policies. In 2010, acupuncture and moxibustion of traditional Chinese medicine were added to the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by the UNESCO. Presently, TCM has been back in the news for its effectiveness in improving the cure rate of the COVID-19 since its outbreak in January 2020.

  3. (3) Why does the writer write this text?

Most people who own iPhones use them as their alarm clocks―making it very easy to check emails one last time before falling asleep and hard to ever feel away from work and social networks.

Several years ago, my boss fainted due to exhaustion after staying up late to catch up on work. She banged her head and ended up with five stitches (缝针) and became what she calls a "sleep evangelist (传教士)." Now she leaves her phone charging in another room when she goes to bed and encourages her friends to do the same.

"I sent all my friends the same Christmas gift―a lovely alarm clock―so they could stop using the excuse that they needed their very attractive iPhones by their beds to wake them up in the morning." she said.

If your phone wakes you up in the morning, it may also be keeping you up at night. A 2008 study showed that people exposed to mobile radiation took longer to fall asleep and spent less time in deep sleep. "The study indicates that during laboratory exposure to 884 MHz wireless signals, components of sleep believed to be important for recovery from daily wear and tear are severely affected," the study concluded.

A quarter of young people feel like they must be available by phone around the clock, according to a Swedish study that linked heavy cellphone use to sleeping problems, stress and depression. Unreturned messages carry more guilt when the technology to deal with them lies at our fingertips. Some teens even return text messages at midnight.

Most of us choose not to set limits on our nighttime availability. Nearly three quarters of people from the age of 18 to 44 sleep with their phones within reach, according to a 2012 Time poll. That number falls off slightly in middle age, but only people aged 65 and older are leaving the phone in another room as common as sleeping right next to it.

  1. (1) Why did the author's boss start to enjoy sleeping?
A . Her friends encouraged her to sleep on time. B . Mobile phones couldn't wake her up on time. C . Her friends sent her a lovely clock to wake her up. D . She got hurt due to working too late.
  2. (2) Why did the author's boss give her friends alarm clocks as Christmas gifts?
A . Alarm clocks don't give off any radiation. B . Alarm clocks are better at waking her friends up. C . She advised them to replace phones with alarm clocks. D . She used alarm clocks to remind them not to work too late.
  3. (3) What can we learn from the 2008 study?
A . Mobile radiation makes people unable to fall asleep. B . Mobile phones can release 884 MHz wired signals. C . Sleep can help people fight against radiation. D . Components of sleep can be seriously affected by wireless signals.
  4. (4) What is the best title for the passage?

Healthy Habits That Stick

Here are five rules that helped me develop good habits.

Pick habits you honestly want to have

I didn't choose habits I thought I should add because of what anyone else was doing.  It was about listening to myself.

Build your habits in your own way

When I started to build up an exercise routine, I only went when I wanted to go. For me, that was around 2 p. m. every day. If I wanted to do 20 minutes on the bike, I'd do only 20 minutes and then leave.

Start small

I knew that if I tried to take on too much, I'd find a way to make an excuse. I started with two minutes of exercise, which were finally built up to 10, then 20 minutes. I realised that just doing something, no matter how small, meant I was more likely to do it again the next day.

Bekind to yourself

When I got a cold and missed several days of exercise, I didn't beat myself up. Instead of punishing myself, I tried to love myself—and that had a more enjoyable and lasting effect.

Celebrate every small victory

When I began keeping a diary every morning, I put a number in the corner of each page to show how many diaries I had written.  Finally, after I filled up a notebook, I celebrated buying a new notebook.

A. If I missed a day, I let it go.

B. I can make exercise less boring.

C. So my daily purposes were very small.

D. I celebrated my pen running out of ink.

E. It wasn't about keeping up with other people.

F. I should celebrate my success with my friends.

G. It also meant that I would do whatever I wanted to do once I got there.

While 1 was sitting in the living room, the days that I spent with my mom crowded in on me. We had a very Tom and Jerry relationship. She was a strict trainer; I was naughty. She would ask me to buy groceries, and I wouldn't come right home because I'd be using the change from the milk and bread to play video games at the supermarket. I loved video games. I was a master at Street Fighter. I could go forever on a single play. I'd drop a coin in, time would fly, and the next thing 1 knew there'd be a woman standing behind me with a belt. It was a race. I'd take off out the door and through the dusty streets of Eden Park, climbing over walls. It was a normal thing in our neighborhood:

Everyone knew: The child would come through like a bat out of hell, and his mom would be right there behind him. She could go fast in high heels, but if she really wanted to come after me, she'd kick her shoes off while still going at top speed. She'd do this strange move with her ankles and the heels would go flying and she wouldn't even miss a step. When 1 was little she always caught me, but as I got older I got faster. So it was not easy for her to catch me.

Paragraph 1: When speed failed her, she used her wisdom.

Paragraph 2: If given a chance, I would let my mom run in front of me.

改错:Next time that I plan to travel in London, I'm going to take a plane.
