Telephone calls in the UK and USA are very similar, with most differences being minor and almost everything being mutually (相互) understandable. However, there are a few interesting differences in how British and Americans speak on the phone, including some potential misunderstandings.
Answering the phone in the UK and USA
The standard way of answering a work phone in English is some part of "Good morning/ afternoon/ evening…Limited/ Corp…Department…Section…speaking. How can/ may I help you?" The only thing that differs in that is that "How can I help you?" is more common in Britain and "How may I help you?" is more standard in the US.
With a home phone or mobile, just answering the phone with "Hello?" is standard in English. If you can see who is calling and know them well, it has become more common to greet them by name straightaway instead, e. g. "Hi Steve. Thanks for calling me back". More informal greetings in that situation would be "Yo, Steve" or just "What's up?" in the US and "Alright Steve?" in the UK, with Americans perhaps more likely to use these kinds of more informal phrases. Americans are also more likely to use affectionate phrases like "Hi Honey" or "What's up, bro?", with the British phrase "Alright, mate" being both less common and not actually being so friendly.
Polite language at the beginning of calls in the UK and USA
"Thanks for…" and "Sorry for…" are not only equally likely in different forms of English, but seem to be very popular at the start of phone calls worldwide. The only small UK/USA difference is the rather cute British verb "ring" in "Thanks for ringing me back" and "Sorry to ring again so soon, but…". The more standard language "Thanks for calling me back" and "Sorry to call again so soon, but…" are used in both the UK and USA.
【1】Which of the following is the American way of answering a work phone?
A.Good morning. Bibury Systems. How can I help you?
B.Hello. This is Bibury Systems. How can I help you?
C.Good morning. Bibury Systems. How may I help you?
D.Hi. Friend. This is Bibury Systems. How may I help you?
【2】If Tom says "Alright Steve?" on the phone, what can we infer from it?
A.Tom and Steve are good friends.
B.They must be from America.
C.They are both at home.
D.Tom is very polite to Steve.
【3】Which of the following can best describe the underlined word "affectionate"?
A.Being happy and polite.
B.Showing love and care.
C.Being loosely connected.

Missing their daughter, my parents came to visit me in the South West of France over my February break. As a little surprise for them I planned a trip to a small village called Niaux to see the famous ancient cave paintings.
These cave paintings, drawn between 30,000 to 12,000 years ago, were made by some of the first modern human beings! Advances in science and technology have enabled scientists and historians to carbon date (碳定年代) the paintings accurately, and to discover the tools they used to draw the paintings, as well as the materials they used. My dad had studied these caves at university as a student of history but he had never had the chance to see one himself. So, I decided this had to change!
We travelled there by train. Many caves which contain prehistoric paintings are no longer open to the public. As the carbon dioxide that we breathe out and the bright light will do damage to the paintings, so for many caves now, visitors can only see reconstructions (复原) of the original paintings. However, Niaux is an exception. By limiting the number of people allowed in the cave at a time and limiting the light used to light up the paintings, the paintings in Niaux have been preserved so that visitors can see the originals. They were incredible! We saw paintings of bison and mountain goats and deer painted on the walls as clearly as though they had been done yesterday. They were actually drawn around 14,000 years ago!
Many people believe that these paintings were drawn as part of an almost religious activity, while others believe they show the daily life experiences of the men and women who lived in these caves all those years ago. Maybe we will never know for sure…but one thing is for certain…those cavemen were far better at drawing than I am!
【1】Why did the author surprise her parents by visiting the cave paintings?
A.Because she wanted her parents to relax.
B.Because the paintings are of great value.
C.Because her parents are both interested in art.
D.Because her father had studied the paintings.
【2】How do people protect the cave paintings in Niaux?
A.By preventing tourists from visiting them.
B.By allowing visitors to see reconstructions.
C.By controlling the number of tourists and lighting.
D.By stopped tourists from taking pictures of them.
【3】What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A.The author knows nothing about drawing.
B.Cave paintings were used for entertainment.
C.The purpose of the paintings will be clear soon.
D.The author has great admiration for the cavemen.
【4】What is the text mainly about?
A.A tour of ancient cave paintings.
B.The preservation of ancient art.
C.The civilization of cavemen.
D.A way to show respect for parents.

The virus that causes COVID-19 can hang around on plastic packaging and plastic medical equipment for up to three days after polluting, a study suggests.
The researchers looked at how long the virus that causes the new coronavirus can survive on different things from cardboard to copper. The results show that the COVID-19 virus appears to survive longest on plastic and steel, where it can survive for two to three days. It did the least well on copper, lasting up to four hours, and can survive on cardboard for a day—up to 24 hours.
As well as looking at the virus' survival ability on certain things, the team looked at how long the virus can remain active in the air. Tests suggest it can remain in the air for up to three hours, explaining how mass gatherings can lead to multiple infections. This also means it is spread through people's coughs and sneezes in small drops that can remain present in the air and on surfaces.
The virus has been difficult to control and has caused a higher number of deaths than the SARS outbreak of 2003. The study's authors say there may be many reasons for this including the rate that asymptomatic carriers can spread the virus before symptoms develop. According to the WHO, it is not known how long the new coronavirus survives on surfaces but it seems that they can survive for several hours and days. The exact amount of time a virus can last depends on conditions like temperature and the amount of water in the air.
The WHO states: "If you think a surface may be infected, clean it with soap or something that can kill the virus and protect yourself and others. Clean your hands with an alcohol-based hand rub or wash them with soap and water. Avoid touching your eyes, mouth, or nose.”
【1】On which thing does the COVID-19 virus have the shortest survival time?
A.Copper. B.Plastic. C.Wood. D.Cardboard.
【2】What might be a suggestion to prevent multiple infection?
A.Don't cough in public. B.Avoid mass gathering.
C.Stay away from virus. D.Don't touch strangers.
【3】Why is the COVID-19 virus difficult to control according to the study's authors?
A.Because people know little about this virus. B.Because the weather conditions are changeable.
C.Because this virus can survive for a long time D.Because there are some asymptomatic carriers.
【4】What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A.It is necessary to clean every surface. B.Cleaning hands can protect your mouth and eyes.
C.The COVID-19 can be infected through contact. D.Drinking alcohol can prevent the COVID-19.

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Ever since a 2009 cycling accident put him in a wheelchair, Dan Black of Chepstow, Wales, has had one dream—walking.
He has adapted to his limitations, but he longs for the freedom and activity he once had. His mother says he "goes to bed dreaming he can walk and run." Which is why he was excited to learn about cutting edge stem cell research being done in China, and a treatment that could possibly lead to the recovery of his legs.
But there are two big problems between Dan and his dream First, the research is so cutting edge that it may be years before the treatment is an actual, real possibility for him. And second is the most practical of all considerations: money. The procedure would doubtless cost tens of thousands of dollars—maybe more.
And these are not all for Dan. He lost the use of his legs and his right arm in the accident. He requires around the clock care, so it's hard for him to find a job. His lifestyle is, according to his mother, "terrible". Coming up with the money he will need for those treatments—when and if they are available—was a source of great concern to the young Welshman.
Encouraged by love and concern for Dan, friends worked hard through a series of fund-raising activities over a period of five years to get more than 20,000 pounds for the procedure. Dan was moved by this extraordinary kindness and felt he could really start looking toward the day when he could turn his dream of walking again into a reality.
Then he heard about Brecon, a 5-year-old who also lives in Chepstow and suffers from spastic diplegia cerebral palsy, which severely limits his ability to walk. Dan learnt that a new surgical procedure being done in the United States could allow the little boy to walk unaided. But the surgery would require more than 60, 000 pounds—money Brecon's parents were having a hard time raising.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
"It appears that Brecon can walk if he gets his operation, but I can't right now." Dan said to himself.
