Sam is a fourth-year student at Harvard Medical School, but poetry is still a big part of his life, now with a new teacher,Rafael Campo, who believes poetry can benefit every doctor’s education and work. Rafael is a physician, professor and a highly respected poet.
“Poetry is in every encounter(邂逅)with my patients. I think healing is really in a very great way about poetry. And if we do anything when we’re with our patients,we’re really immersing(使沉浸于)ourselves in their stories, really hearing their voices. And,certainly, that’s what a poem does,”he said.
Rafael worries that something important has been lost in medicine and medical education today:humanity, which he finds in poetry. To end that,he leads a weekly reading and writing workshop for medical students and residents(住院医生).
He thinks medical training focuses too much on distancing the doctor from his or her patients, and poems can help close that gap.
Third-year resident Andrea Schwartz was one of the workshop regulars. She said. “I think there’s no other profession other than medicine that produces as many writers as it does. And I think that is because there’s just so much power in doctors and patients interacting when patients are at their saddest. ”Not everyone believes that’s what doctors should do,though.
Rafael said,“I was afraid of how people might judge me,actually. In the medical profession,as many people know,we must always put the emergency first. But,you know, that kind of treatment,if it’s happening in the hospital, very regrettably, sadly, results in a bad outcome. The family is sitting by the bedside. The patient hasn’t survived the cancer. Don’t we still have a role as healers there?”
In a poem titled“Health”,Rafael writes of the wish to live forever in a world made painless by our incurable joy. He says he will continue teaching students, helping patients and writing poems, his own brand of medicine.
【1】What do we know about Rafael Campo?
A.He works as a doctor. B.He is under medical care.
C.He is a literature professor. D.He knows little about poetry.
【2】What does the author try to show in Paragraph 2 ?
A.The importance of medical training.
B.The effect of poetry in medical treatment.
C.The similarity involved in poetry and medical work.
D.The present relationship between patients and doctors.
【3】What does Andrea Schwaflz think of poetry?
A.It comforts patients’family.
B.It contributes to medical work.
C.It has nothing to do with doctors.
D.It keeps doctors away from patients.
【4】What is Rafael Campo’s view on poetry?
A.It requires a lot of spare time.
B.It can provide a useful tool for doctors.
C.It has little effect on patients’conditions.
D.It should be included in emergency treatments.

A huge 42 percent of marriages in the UK end in divorce, the highest rate in Europe. What is happening in the UK to cause such a phenomenon? Many consider the family to be the basic building block of society. If marriages and families are falling apart, is the UK society also falling apart? Is the UKs cultural identity breaking down? The UK of today is one of the most multicultural countries on earth. There are exotic sights and sounds on the street corners of every British city. British cuisine is now one of the most diverse around. Everyone speaks with a different accent.
Is such diversity a good thing? Well, it makes the UK a very exciting place to live in. There are new ideas everywhere. There is great freedom to be who you want to be, and most people will not criticize you for who you are. Yet such freedom seems to come at a cost. Some British people regard ethnic minorities (少数民族) as coming to the UK to steal jobs. When the economy does badly, this feeling increases as unemployment rates rise. So, it could be argued that the breakdown of marriages in the UK is in some part because of the pressures put upon families by wider problems in British society. Many people become stressed when those problems arise, and that can then make their family life unhappy as well.
Another possible reason for the high divorce rate might be that marriage no longer has the same value or meaning for British people as it once did. Church attendance in the UK has been falling for the last 50 years, suggesting fewer people consider marriage a holy thing. Since 1991, there has been a drop of 50 percent in people getting married in church rather than a register office.
Then there is the financial side. In the past, married couples paid lower government taxes than single people. That tax incentive (激励) policy, which used to reduce a couples tax by up to 500 in a year, has now disappeared, making the cost to keep a marriage higher.
However, the 42 percent UK divorce rate isn’t the highest rate in the past forty years! Meanwhile, some measures are being taken to strengthen marriage in the UK by the government.
【1】According to the text, all the following account for the high divorce rate except .
A.Desire for freedom. B.Social problems.
C.Change of values. D.Financial pressures.
【2】What does the underlined word “exotic” probably mean in paragraph 1?
A.amazing B.foreign
C.local D.familiar
【3】What can be inferred from the text?
A.Cultural diversity has brought people freedom to criticize others.
B.The rising of the divorce rate indicates the society is falling apart.
C.The tax incentive policy once contributed to steady families to some degree.
D.More British people would get married in the church rather than in a register office.
【4】What’s the writer’s attitude towards the present situation of the divorce rate in UK?
A.Pessimistic. B.Unconcerned. C.Doubtful. D.Optimistic.

Money might not grow on trees, but scientists have confirmed that gold is found in the leaves of some plants. Researchers from Australia say that the presence of the particles (颗粒) in a eucalyptus (桉树) tree’s leaves shows that deposits (矿藏) are buried many meters below. They believe that the discovery offers a new way to find the valuable metal in difficult-to-reach areas.
Dr Mel Lintern said: “We have found a lot of the easy particles in Australia in this way. Now we are trying to find the more difficult ones that are buried tens of meters below. And the trees are providing us with a method to be able to do this.”
Using a vast machine that uses X-rays to explore matter in detail—they found gold in the leaves and small thin branches.
“We need 500 eucalyptus trees growing over a gold deposit to have enough gold in the tress themselves to make a gold ring,” said Dr Lintern. However the presence of the particles pointed to richer deposits buried more than 30m below. He added, “We believe that the trees are acting like a pump(水泵). They are bringing life-giving water from their roots, and in doing so, they are taking smaller gold particles up into the leaves.”
The scientists said that research on plants could offer a better and simpler method to discover gold deposits. Dr Lintern said: “Not only do we believe it is a way of saving the exploration cost, because exploring for these deposits can be quite expensive, it also reduces the damage to the environment because we are taking a very small amount from the trees themselves, as well as the leaves and branches on the ground. The plant-analyzing(分析) method is certain to work!”

D.the roots can take water and deposits up into the leaves
【3】Which of the following cannot describe the planting-analyzing method?
A.useless B.cheap C.environmentally-friendly D.simple

B.is confident of the plant-analyzing method
C.is very satisfied with what he has achieved in mining
D.is tired of discovering gold deposits in the wild

Michelle was 5 years old when she heard her mom and dad talking about her little brother Jack, only an infant (婴儿). He was very sick and they were completely out of money. Only a very costly operation could save Jack, but there was no one to whom they could turn for the money needed. She heard her daddy say to her tearful mom, “Only a miracle can save him now.”
Hearing the words, Michelle went to her bedroom and took all the coins from her little money box. After counting the coins three times, she slipped out of the room and made her way to the drug store 6 blocks away…
She waited for a long time before the pharmacist (药剂师) turned around and asked her, “What do you want?”
“Well, it’s about my brother,” Michelle answered, “He’s really sick. And I want to buy a miracle.”
“I beg your pardon?” said the pharmacist.
“His name is Jack. And he has something very bad growing inside his body. And my daddy says only a miracle can save him now. So how much does a miracle cost?”
“We don’t sell miracles here, little girl. I am sorry, but I can’t help you.” the pharmacist said.
“Listen, I have the money to pay for it.” With these words, Michelle poured out all the coins from her pocket.
At this time, a well-dressed man behind Michelle stooped down stairs and asked the little girl, “I am selling the miracle you want. Tell me how much money you have.”
“One dollar and eleven cents,” Michelle answered in a low voice, “That’s all the money I have. But I can get some more if I need to.”
“Well,” smiled the man, “a dollar and eleven cents. The exact price of a miracle for your little brother. Show me the place where your brother lives.”
