My father was 44 and knew he wasn't going to make it to 45. He wrote me a letter and hoped that something in it would help me for the rest of my life.
Since the day I was 12 and first read his letter, some of his words have lived in my heart. One part always stands out. “Right now, you are pretending to be a timekiller . But I know that one day, you will do something great that will set you among the very best.” Knowing that my dad believed in me gave me permission to believe in myself. “You will do something great.” He didn't know what that would be, and neither did I, but at times in my life when I've felt proud of myself, I remember his words and wish he were here so I could ask, “Is this what you were talking about, Dad? Should I keep going?”
A long way from 12 now, I realize he would have been proud when I made any progress. Lately, though, I've come to believe he'd want me to move on to what comes next: to be proud of, and believe in, somebody else. It's time to start writing my own letters to my children. Our children look to us with the same unanswered question we had. Our kids don't hold back because they're afraid to fail. They're only afraid of failing us. They don't worry about being disappointed. Their fear-as mine was until my father's letter-is of being a disappointment.
Give your children permission to succeed. They're waiting for you to believe in them.
I always knew my parents loved me. But trust me: That belief will be more complete, that love will be more real, and their belief in themselves will be greater if you write the words on their hearts:“Don't worry; you'll do something great.” Not having that blessing from their parents may be the only thing holding them back.
【1】We learn from the text that the author ________.
A.lost his father when he was young
B.worked hard before he read his father's letter
C.asked his father's permission to believe in himself
D.knew exactly what great thing his father wanted him to do

A.Children need their parents' letters.
B.Children are afraid to be disappointed.
C.His children's fear of failure held them back.
D.His father's letter removed his fear of failing his parents.
【3】Which of the following is TRUE of the author?
A.He got no access to success.
B.He wrote back to his father at 12.
C.He was sure his parents loved him.
D.He once asked his father about the letter.
【4】The main purpose of the text is to ________.
A.describe children's thinking
B.answer some questions children have
C.stress the importance of communication
D.advise parents to encourage their children

It is true that quite a few most respected scientific authorities have confirmed that the world is becoming hotter and hotter. There is also strong evidence that humans are contributing to the warming. Countless recent reports have proved the same thing. For instance, a 2012 summary about the climate science by the Royal Society noted that, 'The global warming over the last half- century has been caused mainly by human activity.'
You may not believe that humans could change the planet's climate, but the basic science is well understood. Each year, billions of tons of greenhouse gases are released into the atmosphere because of human activity. As has been known for years, these gases hold heat that would otherwise escape to space, wrapping the planet in an invisible blanket.
Of course, the earth's climate has always been changing due to “natural” factors such as volcanic eruption or changes in solar, or cycles concerning the Earth's going around the sun. According to the scientific research, however, the warming observed by now matches the pattern of warming we would expect from a build-up of greenhouse gas in the atmosphere — not the warming we would expect from other possible causes.
Even if scientists did discover another reasonable explanation for the warming recorded so far, that would give birth to a difficult question. As Robert Henson puts it, 'If some newly discovered factor is to blame for the climate change, then why aren't carbon dioxide and the other greenhouse gases producing the warming that basic physics tells us they should be?'
The only way to prove with 100% certainty that humans are responsible for global warming would be to run an experiment with two identical Earths — one with human influence and one without. That obviously isn’t possible, and so most scientists are careful not to state human influence as an absolute certainty.
【1】In most scientists' opinion, the global warming is mainly caused by _______.
A.solar activities B.volcanic activities
C.natural factors D.human factors
【2】The passage is developed by _______.
A.giving typical examples B.following the order of space
C.analyzing a theory and arguing it D.comparing and finding differences
【3】We can reasonably know from the passage that _______.
A.'natural' factors also contribute to changes of earth’s climate
B.greenhouse gases also have some benefits to the earth
C.there is another planet that is exactly the same as the earth
D.increasing temperature can not be proved with 100% certainty
【4】Which of the following can be the best title?
A.Are All the Scientists Really Scientific?
B.Where Is Global Warming Leading Us to?
C.Are Humans Definitely Causing Global Warming?
D.What's Relation of Global Warming and Greenhouse Gases?

Too often we accuse others of not listening, pretending that we ourselves are faultless, yet in our hearts we know that many of the mistakes we make come about because we haven't listened carefully enough. We get things wrong because we haven't listened carefully enough. We get things wrong because we haven't quite understood what someone meant when they were talking to us. Anyone who has ever taken the minutes of a long meeting will know how hard it is to remember — despite the benefit of notes — exactly what everyone said. But success depends on getting things right — and that means listening.
Listening is not the same thing as hearing; it is not an effort actively. It demands attention and concentration. It may mean quizzing the speaker for additional information or for clarification — it is always better to ask than to continue regardless and get things wrong. However, if you allow your mind to wander onto something else, even for a few minutes, you'll miss what the speaker is saying — probably at the very moment when he or she is saying something critical. And not having heard, you won't know you've missed anything until it's too late.
The most common bad habit we have is to start thinking of what we are going to say about the subject long before the other speaker has finished. We then stop listening. Even worse, this often adds rudeness to inattentiveness, as once you have decided what to say there is a fair chance you will interrupt to say it. Good listeners don't interrupt. In fact it is often worth explaining the main idea of what you have just been told before going on to make your own points. Nobody is offended by this and it shows that you have listened well.
Above all be patient and accept that many people are not very good communicators. It's helpful to remember that the ways people move and position themselves while they are speaking can reveal a great deal about what they are saying. Equally important you should put yourself in the other person's place, both intellectually and emotionally; it will help you to understand what they are getting at and form a response. But don’t be too clever. Faced with a know-all, many people keep quiet because they see no point in continuing.
【1】In the last paragraph, the underlined part 'what they are getting at' means _______.
A.what they imply B.what they like
C.what they attack D.what they achieve
【2】According to the passage, what is the author's opinion?
A.If you want to be a good listener, you should be very clever and emotional.
B.Speakers won't continue talking when their listeners explain what they've heard.
C.If you don't want to get things wrong, it’s important to be a good listener.
D.It's hard to be a good listener because listening tests you on your intelligence.
【3】We know the following from the last paragraph EXCEPT _______.
A.a number of people are not good at communicating
B.body gestures can tell a lot about what people are saying
C.we should think of others more while having a talk
D.faced with a know-all, we should try our best to be clever
【4】What is the lesson we can learn from this passage?
A.Don't accuse others of not listening while talking with them.
B.Don't get anything wrong if you miss what the speaker is saying.
C.Listening inattentively may cost you the loss of your success.
D.Think carefully of what you're going to say before the speaker finishes.

Parties and social gatherings no longer excite us the same way they once did. 【1】 At parties, more people are on their smartphones than on their drinks. According to a recent International Data Corporation study, well over half of all Americans have a smartphone and reach for it the moment they wake up, keeping it in hand all day. In addition, too much of society is using smartphones while driving and as a result getting into car crashes. Thirty-four percent of teens admit texting while driving. 【2】People’s attachment to their smartphones is unbelievably becoming more important than the lives of themselves and others.
Just as drivers dismiss the importance of focusing while on the road, many people also fail to recognize the significance of human interaction. We are starting to get used to people seemingly talking to themselves: everywhere. 【3】 It is actually sending a message to that friend: the person I am texting is more important than you. In addition, relying on our smartphones to make friends does not give us the same advantage as being able to make new friendships in the real world.【4】
As many people risk their lives and the lives of people around them just to send a text or mindlessly check their messages, smartphones are in many ways more dangerous to people. This technology is seriously preventing social achievements and weakening the value of communication.【5】
A.It is true that we can make new friends using smartphones.
B.This is not due to a lack of desire to socialize, but the smartphone.
C.Overdependence on the smartphone gives rise to many problems.
D.And they confirm that text messaging is their number one driving interruption.
E.Face-to-face conversations will give us much stronger communication skills in the long run.
F.When with their friends, some people pointlessly check or send text messages in the presence of a friend.
G.Not only is the smartphone affecting our desire to interact face to face but it is also lowering society’s ability to communicate.

In general, our houseparents are annoying for boys students in dormitories. I didn't begin to like our houseparents until one night in last week. I was asleep when my alarm clock drops onto the floor and was broken into pieces. After the while, the houseparent on duty opened the door and rushed in. Instead of blaming me, he asked me anxiously who was going on. Before making sure I was OK, he asked me to go back to sleep and cleaned up itself. Since then, I completely changed my opinion of our houseparents. They were like our parents, keeping all of us safely.
