Dubai is the commercial capital of the oil-rich United Arab Emirates in the Persian Gulf. But officials want to turn it into the world’s “smartest” city. Earlier this year, Dubai announced plans to be the world’s first city to use self-driving taxis. In June, it placed the first robot police officer at shopping centers and places popular with visitors. Dubai police officials now say they plan to use self-driving vehicles to patrol (巡逻) city streets by the end of the year.
Dubai will be the first in the world to use the O-R3 vehicle, according to the Singapore company that builds it. The company, OTSAW Digital, recently signed an agreement with the Dubai Police force to supply the driverless robots.
The vehicles look a lot like most other automobiles, but are much smaller. They are equipped with cameras, machine learning tools and 3D technology to help them operate independently. The robots automatically charge themselves when power gets low.
The vehicle’s cameras can scan faces and record registration information to check for criminals and possible illegal activities. A police official said the robot can recognize people in any area. It will be used to “identify suspicious objects and follow suspects.” “We seek to increase operations with the help of technology such as robots,” said Dubai’s police chief. “We always search for the best technology to serve our police work for a safer and smarter city.”
The O-R3 can communicate with computers at police centers in different locations. The patrolling robot is able to send data and video to the centers, where operators can control the vehicle remotely. The vehicles can also work together with drones (无人机) that can be launched from the back of the robot. The drones can then follow the vehicles and provide more support from the air.
The CEO of OTSAW Digital, Ting Ming Ling, says the use of such vehicles is designed to help humans with their jobs, not replace them. “Eventually, robots exist to improve the quality of human lives, where men take on high value jobs while robots perform the low skilled ones,” he said.
【1】What does the underlined word “them” in paragraph 3 refer to?
A.Learning tools. B.O-R3 vehicles.

A.To take the place of the work of human beings.

D.To keep an eye on people’s behaviors in the city.
【3】What does the drone do?
A.Gather more information for O-R3 vehicle.
B.Protect the vehicle from the sky.
C.Show directions for the vehicle.
D.Control the vehicle remotely.

Recently, Israeli researchers discovered dance movement therapy (治疗)can be used as an enjoyable and effective tool to promote exercise, boost mood, improve quality of life and create intergenerational closeness. The findings are published in the journal Frontiers in Psychology.
Researchers from the Kibbutzim College and University of Haifa in Israel hired 16 dance movement therapists to meet with their grandmothers for three free-form dance lessons, whose goal was to see how these lessons would affect each group, and whether intergenerational links might strengthen. The researchers also wanted to examine a potential low-cost method to treat issues commonly faced by an aging population, such as depressed mood and limited mobility.
Shuper Engelhard from the University of Haifa analyzed the videos of the lessons, personal diaries, and semi-structured interviews between granddaughters and grandmothers, she found that for grandmothers dancing promoted positive feelings and mood. For granddaughters, dancing changed their views of aging and allowed them to face their grandparent's eventual death. Both groups expressed gratitude and felt their link was stronger than before.
Shuper Engelhard said familiarity was important to the success. The dancing lessons promoted physical activity even when the body was fatigued and weak,“ Shuper Engelhard says. "This emphasizes the significance of the close and familiar relationship as a means to promote new experiences for the older person.
However, the research had some limitations as only 32 individuals participated, and although the study was open to grandchildren of all genders, all participants were female. Besides, all granddaughters in this study were dance movement therapists. Shuper Engelhard would like to conduct similar research in other populations. With an activity as simple and accessible as free-form dancing, aging populations can improve their physical and mental health and also connect with their loved ones.
【1】How did the researchers reach their conclusion?
A.By testing a potential cheap method.
B.By finding out the connections between gaps.
C.By setting up an experiment of dance lessons.
D.By treating some diseases faced by aging populations.
【2】What is the main idea of the third paragraph?
A.The ideas about aging. B.The result of the research.
C.The characteristic of videos. D.The reaction of the research team.
【3】What does the underlined word “fatigued“ in paragraph 4 mean?
A.Perfect. B.Sensitive. C.Tired. D.Energetic.
【4】What would probably be the next step of the research?
A.Involving male participants in the dance classes.
B.Analyzing the dance's features in different ages.
C.Releasing the final result to the public.
D.Finding out the limits of the research.

There's a Crocodile in Our Pickle Jar(咸菜缸)
“Alex, your brother ate everything on his plate. Why don't you be a good boy too and eat your dinner?” said Alex's Mom, “I guess you won't be hungry for sweets then”.
"But I'm not hungry," said Alex.
Alex's Mom walked over to the countertop and brought over the most mouth-watering, tasty looking dessert you ever did see. "Okay, who wants a piece of chocolate cake?” Before anyone else at the table could speak a single word, Alex called out, “Me, me, me, me, me!”
“Alex, you just said you’re not hungry,“ said Alex's Mom. "How could you possibly want a piece of cake?”
“I just got hungry all of a sudden,“ said Alex.
“Good, I bet you're ready to eat your peas and carrots then.”
"I'm not hungry for them. I'll just have a piece of cake please,“ said Alex.
“Alex, it doesn't work that way. To get a piece of cake you'll have to eat your dinner first. ”
"But I don't want too!”
“Well, I guess you'll just have to call it a night,” said Alex's Dad. "You're excused from the table Alex. Brush your teeth and get to bed, young man.”
“Yes, sir," replied Alex.
As Alex stood up from the table, his brother pretended to be flying an airplane. After a bite of chocolate cake made a safe landing in his brother's mouth, Alex ran out of the room as fast as he could. Being sent to bed without having dessert was tough enough, but being teased by his brother is what really took the cake.
After he brushed his teeth and climbed into bed, Alex found it hard to fall asleep that night. His stomach sounded like an angry lion and he felt dizzy. Alex was so hungry that he felt weak and the room was spinning! As he made his way to the kitchen and opened the refrigerator door, Alex could hardly wait to sneak a nice big piece of chocolate cake. He knew that would make him feel better.

But Alex was shocked to see a crocodile swimming in a jar of pickles.
