After a lifetime working behind the scene, celebrity photographer David Steen decided to turn the spotlight on himself. He wanted to create a record of his life and so he called upon the services of auto-biography company, LifeBook. Working closely with them, he was able to bring together a wonderful collection of stories. The result was Lucky Boy, an interesting written portrait that he could share with his children and grandchildren.
Steen’s career began when he started working as an office boy for the magazine Picture Post in 1951. To a boy brought up in a crowded flat, he had entered a world that seemed impossibly fruitful. The 15-year-old David was taken under the wing of the renowned Bert Hardy, the magazine’s chief photographer. Steen recalls in his autobiography, “I would go on lots of jobs with him as his assistant. I cleaned his cameras and I drove him everywhere.” Eventually, his effort paid off. The magazine sent him on his first foreign director in Paris.
His professional career enriched his Lifebook. “I remember photographing a little boy in a slum”, Steen wrote. However, some days would be spent in the splendid world of the famous. Undoubtedly, he naturally had an eye for a good picture and was never one to miss an opportunity. On one occasion, Steen was on an assignment in Rio. When at the hotel bar, he found himself standing next to Great Train Robber Ronnie Biggs. “We started chatting. By the end of the evening, I had persuaded him to let me photograph him on a railway line.”
After seeing a friend’s LifeBook, Steen made the decision to follow suit. He didn’t say a word to his family because he wanted the book to be a surprise for them, so much so that when he presented the books to his family on Christmas Day, everyone was amazed and delighted.

That old saying “An apple a day keeps the doctor away” may hold some truth. In fact, one study found that in 2012, almost half of the deaths in America caused by heart disease, stroke, and type 2 diabetes were linked to poor diet.
But knowing you should eat healthfully and actually doing it are two different things, and making the right choice isn’t any easier when a pound of grapes costs more than twice as much as a pound of spaghetti. The Fresh Food Pharmacy aims to change that. A program was created by Geisinger Health System, a hospital network in Pennsylvania. This pharmacy is similar to a grocery store stocked with fresh produce, lean meats and more. Even better, it’s all free.
Under the program, patients with type 2 diabetes are prescribed a week’s worth of food for their entire household. After the first year, all 180 participants improved in key health measurements, in particular their hemoglobin Ale levels( HbAlc), the gold standard for tracking blood sugar control.
In 2012, the costs associated with diabetes in the United States were $ 245 billion. Geisinger will spend only about $ 1,000 annually on each patient. David Feinberg, Geisinger’s CEO, calculates that “a decrease HbAlc of one point saves us about $ 8,000.’’ With many patients dropping three points, the program could save $24, 000 a year-as well as reduce the risk of blindness and other complications.
Geisinger isn’t the only organization experimenting with produce prescriptions. Nonprofits, hospitals, and even doctors’ offices around the country have programs that bring “food is medicine” concept to life. Boston Medical Center’s Preventive Food Pantry was the first such program in the country when it opened. Today it serves approximately 7,000 patients in a month.
【1】The author uses the old saying at the beginning of the passage to ______________.
A.show his love for apples B.describe the background
C.stress the importance of apples D.introduce a topic
【2】What does the underlined word “that” refer to?
A.people’s blood sugar B.the hospital network
C.high price of healthy food D.people’s awareness of dieting
【3】According to the passage, we can learn that ______________.
A.All participants in Geisinger Health System’s program improved in all health measurements
B.Geisinger’s program can decline the possibility of blindness and other related diseases.
C.now about 7,000 patients have benefited from Geisinger Health System’s program
D.to carry out its program, Geisinger Health System learned from Boston Medical Center’s Preventive Food Pantry.

A few years ago, I started to notice big shifts in teens’ behavior. Around 2014, teens started to spend their time much differently from the generations before. These teens and young adults all have one thing in common: Their childhood or adolescence coincided with the rise of the smart phone. For this reason, I call them iGeneration.
What makes iGen different? Growing up with a smartphone has affected nearly every aspect of their lives. They spend so much time on the Internet, texting friends and on social media that they have less leisure time for everything else. Whether it’s going to parties, shopping at the mall, or watching movies, iGen teens are participating in these social activities at a significantly low rate.
Some parents might worry about their teens spending so much time on their phones because it differs from the way they spent their own adolescence. But it is not just different—in many ways, it’s actually worse. Spending less time with friends means less time to develop social skills. A 2016 study found that sixth graders who spent just five days at a camp without using screens ended the time better at reading emotions on others’ faces, suggesting that iGen’s screen-filled lives might cause their social skills to shrink.
In addition, in the annual Monitoring the Futuresurvey, the percentage of iGen teens who read a non required book every day dropped from 60 percent in 1980 to only 16 percent in 2016. Perhaps as a result, average SAT critical reading scores have dropped 14 points since 2010.
iGen shows another break with the previous generations: Depression, anxiety, and loneliness have shot upward with happiness declining. The teen suicide rate increased by more than 50 percent, as did the number of teens with clinical-level depression.
Parents used to worry about their teens spending too much time with their friends—they were a distraction, a bad influence, a waste of time. But it might be just what iGen needs now.
【1】How are iGen teens different from the generations before?
A.They are more skillful in high-tech products.
B.They stay in close contact with friends.
C.They prefer to live a virtual life than a real one.
D.They spend their adolescence with smartphones.
【2】Why is the “annual Monitoring the Future survey” mentioned in paragraph 4?
A.To stress the importance of reading the required books.
B.To explain the reason why iGeneration reads less.
C.To introduce the reading situation of iGeneration.
D.To show the influence of reading on iGen teenagers’ mental health.
【3】What is the fifth paragraph mainly about?
A.Depression and anxiety are the common symptoms of mental problems.
B.Mental problems can be found in large numbers of iGen teens.
C.Net-addicted teenagers are more likely to suffer from mental problems.
D.iGen teens’ mental problems are getting more and more attention.
【4】What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.How the Smartphone Affected an Entire Generation of Kids?
B.Parents Are Getting Serious about Teen Smartphone Addiction.
C.Smartphones for Teens: Smart or Stupid?
D.Smartphones Are Changing iGen Teen’s Lifestyle.

The manta ray is one of the largest fishes in the world, reaching up to 29 feet in width. And manta rays are some of the friendliest creatures. They allow divers to swim right up to them. Unfortunately, these gentle animals are in big trouble. Since 2011, manta rays have been listed as a threatened species worldwide.
Overfishing is considered the biggest threat to giant manta numbers, both intentional and accidental. People catch manta rays for their gill plates — the parts through which they filter their food from seawater — are sold in China for medical purposes. Driven by the huge demand, fishermen have hunted them mercilessly. From 2010 to 2013, the number of rays killed annually to supply the gill plate market tripled to 150,000. Clearly, overfishing is bad for any sea creature, but it’s even worse for giant manta rays. Female mantas usually have only one baby, every two to five years. So every manta ray that was caught hurts the population in a big way.
To protect giant manta population, Peru, a country in South America, recently took a big step to protect giant manta rays. It banned fishing for them. People who break the law can be fined or have their fishing licenses taken away. Even manta rays caught accidentally in fishing nets must be released. Although other countries have passed laws to protect manta rays, Peru’s may be the most important one yet, because there are more giant manta rays in the Pacific Ocean near Peru than in any other place in the world.
Scientists working in the Manta Trust, an organization that researches manta rays, are also trying to protect manta rays by learning more about them. Earlier this year, the organization attached video cameras, called Crittercams, to manta rays off the west coast of Mexico. The photos the cameras collect could help researchers predict where and when manta rays swim. The scientist could use the information to warn fishing boats to avoid these areas, helping reduce the number of accidentally caught manta rays.
