When viewed from the Schuylkill Expressway in Philadelphia, St. John's Church presents a picture of dignity and grace. This gray-stoned beauty surrounded by a park made a wonderful setting for the wedding my wife and I attended in Manayunk.
At the church, I ran into an old friend? Casper Barrata, who happened to be assigned to the Mass (弥撒). Now 73, Casper was a brilliant and talented softball pitcher (投手) back in the Men's Leagues of Philadelphia in the mid-60s. I didn't recognize the now silver-haired fellow until my brother-in-law John Kay mentioned his name to me! After a very pleasant greeting and praising each other on how good the other was at playing the game back then, Casper asked if I remembered a letter of encouragement I had written to him back in 1964. It appeared that Casper fell on hard times pitching, as pitchers sometimes do, and he wasn'1 pitching too well for a period of time. I didn't recall the letter, but he said, “Yes, I still have it, and I continue to read it anytime things aren't going too well.” He went on to say that he had read the letter many times over the past 40 years, and the situation always seemed to improve. I was speechless!
He continued, “You don’t remember?” I said, “Sadly, no, I don't.” But I did ask if I could have a copy of the letter. He said he would email it to me. After Casper finished work at Murphy's wedding, we met on the steps of the church. Casper came up to me and presented the letter. He lived a block away from the church and ran home to get it after the Mass. The envelope had faded and turned yellow, and so was the letter inside. That letter had to be nearly 50 years old. In simple terms, the letter read:
These hard times are temporary: Maintain your passion for the game. Never quit and you 911 be back on top again shortly. Hang in there!
Casper Barrata once again became the best pitcher in the League and remained to be a thorn in our team's side every time he pitched against us.
【小题1】【小题1】Why did the author go to the church?
A. To get married. B. To hold a wedding.
C. To attend a wedding. D. To meet his friend Casper Barrata.

A. The author was moved by Casper. B. The author wasn't good at speaking.

D. The letter helped him recall something in the past.

Owls are equipped with highly developed stealth technology (隐形技术) that helps them charge towards prey?an animal hunted and eaten by another?undetected, a study has shown.
Owls have flight feathers that absorb aerodynamic sound and control the vibrations (振动) that occur when a bird beats its wings. The result is perfect silence as it approaches a mouse or other prey.
Scientists used lasers and high-speed cameras to analyze and compare long-eared owl, eagle and pigeon feathers during flight. While differing in size, all three birds have a similar wing-beat style.
Professor Jinkui Chu led the research. He said, “Many owls have a unique and fascinating ability to fly so silently that they are out of their prey's hearing range, due to their feather structure.”
This behaviour has long been of interest to engineers, as we seek to apply the owls' noise-reduction mechanisms (机制) to other purposes and situations that benefit society.
Now, however, we know the owls' silent flight ability is even better than we thought. Of all birds the owl is the king of acoustic stealth. It not only manages to prevent aerodynamic noise when gliding, but also mechanical noise caused by vibration during flying.
This is remarkable, considering the sudden jumping, bending and twisting the wings are subjected to when flapping and the noise that is created by other birds.
In the scientific world, the process used to remove this mechanical noise is called ‘damping’, which means the removal of mechanical energy from a vibrating system usually by changing it into heat and allowing it to remain steady.
“Our research showed the long-eared owl has superior damping skill, meaning it can remain amazingly stable and remove mechanical noise caused by the movement of its feathers ? quite an impressive achievement of engineering.99
He added, “This study will hopefully provide further insight into the owls' silent flight mechanism and help engineers develop ideas for special materials or structures, such as on-shore wind turbines, where similar noise removal can be applied.”
【小题1】What can be true about owls according to the text?
A. They are active during the day. B. They attract much attention from engineers.
C. They have similar wings to eagles. D. They beat wings without vibrations.
【小题2】By saying “the owl is the king of acoustic stealth” in Paragraph 6, Jinkui Chu means owls______.
A. are good at capturing prey B. have a good sense of hearing
C. are good at jumping and twisting D. have silent flight ability
【小题3】What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 8 refer to?
A. Mechanical noise. B. The vibrating system.
C. Mechanical energy. D. The removal of mechanical energy.

If only things were that simple. Supporters of the so-called Stone Age diet argue that farming practices introduced about 10,000 years ago are harmful to human health, and that we shouldn't eat grains or food made from milk such as butter and cheese. Instead, they say, we should only eat plenty of lean meat (瘦肉) and fish, with fruit and raw vegetables on the side.
The idea, also called the caveman, or hunter-gatherer diet, has been around for decades and was discussed at a meeting of the British Society for Allergy, Environmental and Nutritional Medicine.
According to Lauren Cordain, a nutritionist at Colorado State University who presented the idea to the meeting, those following the meat-centered menu “lose weight and get healthy by eating the food you were designed to eat”. He says there is increasing evidence that a caveman diet can prevent and treat many common western diseases. Studies of islanders in Papua New Guinea who still live a hunter-gatherer lifestyle show they rarely suffer from heart disease.
But other nutritionists argue that cutting out whole food groups such as grains is just not a good idea.
“I would recommend anybody to eat lean meat and raw vegetables,” says Toni Steer of the MRC human nutrition research unit at Cambridge. But what you're asking people to do is cut out a food group which is good for your health.
Archaeologists say it's not even clear exactly how much of the various foods people actually ate during the Stone Age.
“There was no one Stone Age diet; diets of the past varied greatly,” says John Gowlett, an archaeologist at the University of Liverpool who also attended the conference. Prehistoric people in Africa probably ate less meat than many people think, he says, while those in the northern, icy areas were forced to eat only whatever animals they could catch.
“I'm not convinced that we know what Stone Age man ate,” agrees Andre Millard, who researches ancient health and diet at Durham University. “The evidence we have only suggests the meat component of the diet. We get bones from animals they have eaten but we don't get the remains of any vegetables they have eaten because they rot (腐烂) away.
【小题1】To improve your health, Cordain suggests______.
A. losing weight first B. eating less meat and fish
C. going on the Stone Age diet D. eating more fruit and vegetables
【小题2】What is Steer's attitude towards eating grains?
A. Doubtful. B. Cautious. C. Tolerant. D. Supportive.
【小题3】In Millard's opinion, the evidence for the Stone Age diet______.
A. shows nothing about the diet's vegetable component
B. tells us about ancient people's cooking methods
C. has proven to be reliable and convincing
D. agrees with his research results
【小题4】What does the text mainly discuss?
A. How the Stone Age evolved. B. When the Stone Age diet started.
C. Whether the Stone Age diet is healthy. D. Why the Stone Age topic is getting popular.
