" Culture consists of all shared products of human society" ( Robertson, 1981). This means not only such material things as cities, organizations and schools, but also non-material things such as ideas, customs, family patterns, languages. Putting it simply, culture refers to the entire way of life of a society, "the ways of a people".
Language is a part of culture and plays a very important role in it. Some social scientists consider it the keystone of culture. Without language, the maintaining(延续) of culture would not be possible. On the other hand, language is influenced and shaped by culture, it reflects culture. In the broadest sense, language is the symbolic representation of a people, and it comprises(包含) their historical and cultural backgrounds, as well as their approach to life and their ways of living and thinking.
We should not go further into the relationship between language and culture. What needs to be stressed here is that the two interact, and that understanding of one requires understanding of the other.
Social scientists tell us that cultures differ from one another, that each culture is unique. As cultures are diverse, so languages are diverse. It is only natural then that with differences in cultures and differences in languages, difficulties often arise in communicating between cultures and across cultures. Understanding is not always easy.
Learning a foreign language well means more than merely mastering the pronunciation, grammar, words and idioms. It means learning also to see the world as native speakers of that language see it, learning the ways in which their language reflects the ideas, customs, and behaviors of their society, learning to understand their "language of the mind". Learning a language, in fact, is inseparable from learning its culture.
39. According to the first paragraph, the term "culture" refers to_________.
   A. things like cities, organizations and schools
   B. ideas, customs, family patterns, and languages
   C. all things produced by human race
D.the total that constitute a society
40. The second paragraph tells about_________.
   A. the role language plays in culture

   B. the relationship between language and culture
   C. the influence culture has on language
   D. the representation of culture
41. There will be no difficulty in communication if_________.
A .people from different countries can speak each other ' s languages
 B. people from different countries can know each other ' s cultures
C.people from different countries can know each other ' s languages and cultures
 D. there were no difference between the two cultures
42. The last paragraph mainly talks about ______.

  A. Learning social science through society itself.

  B. Learning a language through its culture,

  C. Learning a culture through its language

  D. Learning social customs through culture.

I travel a lot, and I find out different "styles" (风格) of directions every time 1 ask "How can I get to the post office?"
Foreign tourists are often confused (
困惑) in Japan because most streets there don't have names; in Japan, people use landmarks (地标) in their directions instead of street names. For example, the Japanese will say to travelers, "Go straight down to the corner. Turn left at the big hotel and go past a fruit market. The post office is across from the bus stop."
In the countryside of the American Midwest, there are not usually many landmarks. There are no mountains, so the land is very flat; in many places there are no towns or buildings within miles. Instead of landmarks, people will tell you directions and distances. In Kansas or Iowa, for example, people will say, "Go north two miles. Turn east, and then go another mile."
People in Los Angeles, California, have no idea of distance on the map; they measure distance in time, not miles. "How far away is the post office?" you ask. "Oh," they answer, "it's about five minutes from here." You say, "Yes, but how many miles away is it?" They don't know.
It's true that a person doesn't know the answer to your question sometimes. What happens in such a situation? A New Yorker might say, 'Sorry, I have no idea." But in Yucatan, Mexico, no one answers "I don't know." People in Yucatan believe that "I don't know" is impolite, They usually give an answer, often a wrong one. A tourist can get very, very lost in Yucatan!
47. When a tourist asks the Japanese the way to a certain place they usually _____
A. tell him the names of the streets

B. show him a map of the place
C. describe the place carefully
D. refer to recognizable(
可辨认的) buildings and places
48. What is the place where people measure distance in time?
A. Kansas.  B. Iowa.   C. New York.  D.Los Angeles .
49. People in Yucatan may give a tourist a wrong answer ________
A. as a test      B. in order to save time
C. for fun       D. so as to be polite
50. What can we infer from the text?
A. It's important for travelers to understand cultural differences.
B. It's useful for travelers to know how to ask the way properly.
C. People have similar understandings of politeness.
D. New Yorkers are generally friendly to visitors.

I had an experience once which taught me something about the ways people made a bad situation worse by blaming themselves. One January, I officiated(主持) at two funerals for two elderly women.    51    . At the first home, the son of the deceased(已故) woman said, If only I had sent my mother to Florida and gotten her out of this cold and snow, she would be alive today. Its my fault that she died. At the second home, the son said, If only I had not insisted her going to Florida, she would be alive today.    52     . It is my fault.
    When things don
t turn out as we would like them to, we tend to assume that had we done things differently, the story would have had a happier ending. Any time there is a death, the survivors will feel guilty. Because the course of action they took turned out bad, they believe that the opposite course, for example, keeping mother at home, would have turned out better.        53

There seem to be elements involved in our readiness to feel guilty. The first lies in our belief that the world makes sense---there is a reason for everything that happens.
The second is the thought that we are the cause of what happens, especially the bad things that happen.    54    . A baby comes to think that the world exists to meet his needs, and that he makes everything happen in it. He wakes up in the morning and calls the rest of the world to its tasks.       55     . When he is hungry, people feed him, and when he is wet, people change him. Very often, we do not completely abandon that childish thought that our wishes cause things to happen.
A.That long airplane ride was more than she could take

B.After all, how could it have turned out any worse?

C. Life and dead is an unsolved mystery.

D.The roots of this feeling may lie in our childhood

E.He cries, and someone comes to attend to him

F.Both died a natural death

G. They believe that they are responsible for what has happened.
