During the early 1980SI was a sales manager for a large training company. One of my responsibilities was to train people on how to sell

My mother lived near me for nearly 30 yearswho has just had a third-grade education. The population in our area grew sufficiently and the committee members think about building a new church in our neighborhood. They decided to raise the initial capital by selling lottery (彩票)tickets. My mother jumped at the chance to participate. She had no formal training in the art of sellingbut that never entered her mind. Her plan was simple: talk to as many people as possible about buying tickets and make them feel guilty if they didn’t.

That’s where I came into the picture. She said I was a big shot and that I must know a lot of people. She gave me 10 booklets of 10 tickets each one worth one dollar adding up to a grand total of $ 100. A week laterI showed up with only half of the tickets sold.

“ If only I had more timeI would have been able to sell all these tickets you gave me” I said to my mother. “I simply didn’t have the time. ”

“ What a load of nonsense! You either do something or you have all the excuses why not,,’ my mother shot back. “You made time to go out to dinner watch TV jog go to the movies. What does time have to do with it? Nothing! ” After that blast of the truthshe started to cry. I was defeated. I quickly agreed to buy the rest of my tickets myself. She stopped crying instantly and said“ When you want something then you do whatever it takes to get the job done even cry. ” With a smile she said“I knew that crying would work with youand for being so weak with your excuseshere are 10 more books. Now go and sell them all. ’As a sales managerI paled(苍白)by comparison.

My mother went on to demonstrate that by not making excuses she could produce outstanding results. She managed to out-sell every other volunteer14 to 1. She sold 7000 tickets. Her closest challenge came from a neighbor who sold 500.

I learned a new level of distinction between time and results. I had always wanted to have my own business but had kept saying that it wasn’t the right time and I didn’t have the money. But I kept hearing my mother’s voice in my mind “You either do something that you want or you have all the reasons why you can ’ t. ”

Six months laterI quit my job and started my own businesstraining people in time management.

Teachers say the digital age has had a good influence — and a not-so-good influence — on this generation of American teenagers. More than 2,000 middle and high school teachers took an online survey. Researchers also spoke with teachers in focus groups.

Three-quarters of the teachers said the Internet and digital search tools have had a “mostly positive” effect on their students’ research habits and skills. But 87 percent agreed that these technologies are creating an “easily distracted(分心的)generation” . And 64 percent said the technologies “do more to distract students than to help them academically. ” Many students think doing research now means just doing a quick search on Google.

The Pew Internet Project did the survey with the College Board and the National Writing Project. A majority of the teachers came from Advanced Placement classeswhich provide college-level work for high school students.

Judy Buchanan is director of the National Writing Project and a co-author of the report. Ms.

Buchanan says digital research tools are helping students learn moreand learn faster.

“Teachers really like these tools because they are ways to make some of learning exciting and engaging. Young people like these tools. And the goal is to really help them become creators of contentand meaningful contentand not just sort of consumers. ”

But one problem the survey found is that many students are lacking in digital literacy. In other wordsthey trust too much of the information they find on the Internet. Judy Buchanan says these students have not developed the skills they need to judge the quality of online information.

“It’s just a lot to learn about how to distinguish authentic sources. And it’ s something that really has to be taught and paid attention to. It’s like everything else — in a world in which things can happen quicklyyou really do need to have a way to step back reflect and analyze the information you have. And teachers can do a lot to teach that.

Another problem the survey found is blamed on something that might not seem like a problem at all being able to quickly find information online. Teachers say the result is a reduction in the desire and ability of their students to work hard to find answers. They say students are overly dependent on search engines and do not make enough use of printed books or research librarians.

Many teachers are also concerned that the Internet makes it easy for students to copy work done by others instead of using their own abilities.

55.Most teachers who took the online survey thought the internet tools help students in_______.

B.    to draw students attention away from the internet

C.    to make people learn the benefits of the internet tools

D.    to persuade students to use traditional ways of research

57.  According to the researcherswhich of the following do students lack when facing the internet?

A.    The ability of doing research online.

B.    The interest in using the internet tools.

CThe skills of judging online information

Everyone hates to wait in lines. We get that anxious feeling that our precious life is slipping away while we ’ re doing something so meaningless. But it ’ s not always the length of the wait we find so un- bearable.SomepeoplecampoutsideApplestoresforanentirenightjusttogettheirhandsonthelatest product. But waiting 10 minutes in a grocery store just to buy a drink? Forget it.

Our behavior when waiting is only partly decided by the length of the wait. “Often the psychology of queuing is more important than the statistics of the wait itself” notes the MIT researcher Richard Larson.

One apparent aspect of queuing psychology is that we get bored when we wait in line. This issue is solved in many ways from magazines in hospital waiting rooms to mirrors in elevators so that we can check our appearance.

We really hate it when we expect a short wait and then get a long one. But studies show that we are much more patient when we are given an idea of how long we ’ 11 be waiting.

Walt Disney Co knows this better than anyone else. It posts estimated waiting times for attractions in its theme parks. But according to Larsonthese times are overestimated so that visitors get to the front of the queue more quickly than they expect. It keeps them happy.

But perhaps the biggest influence on our feelings about waiting in a line has to do with our sense of fairness. When it comes to queues the universally acknowledged standard is first come first served. Any departure from this principle is regarded as unfair and can lead to violent queue anger.

You’ve probably experienced mild queue anger yourself in fast food restaurantswatching people in the other line zoom ahead of youcursing yourself for having chosen the “wrong” line. In order to solve this problemthe serpentine(蛇形)line was invented. The serpentine line guides all customers into one big snaking queueseparated by ropes or barriers. When you reach the head of the queueyou are directed to the next available serveror telleror customs official. The serpentine line isn’t always faster than multi-lines before an array(排)of cash registers. But it offers important comfort you absolutely never have to see someone arrive after you and get served before you.

In life waiting is inevitable. But a better understanding of the psychology of waiting can help make it a bit more bearable. When all else failsbring a book or a smartphone will also do.

It’ S human to want light and warmth. God’ S first recorded words were “Let there be light”. And night belongs to the dark side. Electricity ’ S triumph over the night keeps us safer as well as busier. We now live in a fast-movingfully lighted world where night still happens but is optional to experience. Our all-weather culture has washed out the night. In fact we treat the night like failed daylight.

Yet slowness and silence—the different rhythm of the night—are a necessary correction to the day. I think we should stop being night-resistersand learn to celebrate the changes of the seasonsand adjust ourselves to autumn and winter not just turn up the heatingleave the lights on and complain a lot.

Night and dark are good for us. As the nights grow longerit’s time to reopen the dreaming space. Have you ever spent an evening without electric light?

We have all experienced negative darkness—those long nights when we can ’ t sleepand worry about everything, and so we know that “dark time” can seem endlessly long compared with daytime. Yet this slowing of time can be the most relaxing and beautiful experience. Spending the evening in candlelight and maybe by the fire—without TV—talkingtelling storeswe let the lit-up world go by without us expand the hoursand change the thoughts and conversations we usually have.

I have noticed that when all the lights are onpeople tend to talk about what they are doing—their outer lives. Sitting round in candlelight or firelightpeople start to talk about how they are feeling——their inner lives. They argue lessthere are longer pauses.

To sit alone without any electric light is curiously creative. I have my best ideas at dawn or at nightfall but not if I switch on the lights.

Firedreams slowness time quietness books seasons—all these thingswhich are not really thingsbut moments of life—take on a different quality at night-timewhen the moon reflects the light of the sunand we have time to reflect what life is to usknowing that it passes and that every bit of itin its change and its differenceis the here and now of what we have.

A.    night is good time for us to think

B.    time flies and we should treasure it

C.    things take on a different form at night

D.    everything has a different quality in different time

66.  What’ S the best title of the passage?

A.    Light and night.

B.    Why I love the night?

Mr Amabilea respected business thinkertaught a lot of companies his theories of competitive advantage. Mr Amabile claims that competition can save even America’ S troubled health-care systemthe largest in the world. He and Elizabeth Olmsted Teisberg argue in their book “Redefining Health Care” that competitionproperly appliedcan fix what troubles this sector(部门).

That is a daring claim, considering the horrible state of America’ S health-care system. Just consider a few of its failings America pays more for health care than most countriesbut it still has some 45 million citizens with no health insurance at all. While a few receive outstanding treatmentmost do not. The authors conclude that it is “ on a dangerous pathwith a poisonous combination of high costs uneven qualityfrequent errors and limited access to care. ”

The authors offer a package of solutions to fix this messand thereby to put the sector on a genuine competitive footing. Firstbring the data in the broad daylight. Secondtransform competition from the level of doctors and hospitals to the level of medical conditionswhich is completely absent. The authors argue that the right evaluation of “value” for the health sector should be how well a patient improves over the entire treatmentand what the cost is for that entire cycle.

If there is a drawback in this bookit is that the authors sometimes appear over-optimistic. They argue for examplethat their solutions are so reasonable that private clinic could practise them well without waiting for the government to fix its policy mistakes. That seems to be an attractive ideabut it falls into a trap(陷阱)that economists call the fallacy(谬论)of the $20 bill on the street. If there really were easy money on the pavementsurely previous passers-by would have bent over and picked it up by now!

In the same wayif Mr Amabile ’ S prescriptions (处方)are so sensible that companies can make money in the absence of government policy changeswhy have they not done so already? One reason may be that they can make more money in the current mess than in a perfectly competitive market.

In the endthoughthat is small criticism of a very big book.

67.Mr Amabile argues in his book that_______.

A.    America’s health-care system leaves nothing to be desired

B.    it is no easy task to improve America ’ S health-care system

C.    competition can help improve America’ S health-care system

D.    Americans enjoy one of the best health-care systems in the world

68.It is implied in the 3 rd paragraph that_______.

A.    competition may help improve medical conditions

B.    America ’ S health-care system is under severe competition

C.    there is too much competition among doctors and hospitals

D.    few patients in America have received qualified treatment

69.In the author ’ s opinionthe book cannot be considered perfect in that_______.

A.    the solutions given are impossible to be applied

B.    optimistic thinking often leads to careless judgment

C.    the authors of the book have offered an economic fallacy

D.    companies may make less money in a competitive market

70.The author takes a(n) _______attitude toward the book “Redefining Health Care”.

A. critical       B. positive     C. negative   D. ironic
