   Oxford Open Days

    Open day dates in 2017

The next University-wide open days for undergraduates will be held on 28 June, 29 June and 15 September 2017. Students and parents are invited to spend a whole day in Oxford, attending events, talking to staff and students and getting answers to any questions which remain after examining prospectuses(简章)and websites.

To book or not to book

Unlike many other university open days, it is not compulsory to book to attend an Oxford open day. Many events are offered on a drop-in basis.

What to expect on the day

Many departments run their main open day events in the morning so you may choose to start with a visit to your subject department. Here you may attend a talk or sample lecture and chat to tutors and students.

Over lunchtime and in the afternoon, colleges offer a range of events, tours and opportunities to meet students and tutors. This is a great time to visit those colleges on your shortlist.

    Getting around

There is no central campus at Oxford Universit y, so events will happen at colleges, departments, museums and libraries all around the city. Most visitors manage this easily on foot, as all open day venues(会场) are within 15 minutes walking distance from the city centre, but it is important that you plan your day in advance taking travel time into account. Many events will be very busy and latecomers will not always be able to join. Please do not try to drive between venues -  there is no parking available and traffic on open days is typically extremely heavy.

     Disabled visitors

Anyone with a mobility impairment may borrow a free wheelchair to travel around Oxford city centre via Oxford Shop mobility. To book your wheelchair, call +44 (0) 1865 248737 at least one day in advance.

This time last year I entered two long-distance mass-participation swimming events, including the Jubilee River 10 km swim. At the last minute, just before both swims, I decided to pull out.

The reality is, I live in fear of coming last.

When you have swum the English Channel, people think you are somehow superhuman and fearless. Many years have passed since my Channel swimming days, but my expectations are still high.

Last year, in the run-up to the two events, I realized that I couldn’t cope with coming last. I had looked at the swim times of those who had completed the previous year and calculated that, at my current swim pace, I would probably have come last.

But when January 2016 came around, I decided to enter those same events again.

For a few months, I trained hard, but I didn’t get any faster. Then it was June 5the day of the Jubilee River 10 km. The event started at 9:30 am, and the swimmers anxiously hovered, eager to start. As I swam along, the river was quiet and clean and everything was peaceful. The sun shone, Meadows (草地)rolled by and every now and again someone would wave or peer at the scene unfolding in the water.

As the day wore on, somehow I didn’t mind that, predictably, almost everyone was ahead. There were at least some swimmers still near me, and although we shared the same fiver we quietly occupied our own spaces. As I concentrated on doing my own thing, watching the sky, the bank, the other swimming caps passing or not passing, I realized I was enjoying myself.

In the endfour hours and 29 minutes after I ’ d startedI staggered out of the water and was greeted with a smile and a “well done” from the race organizer. I glanced back over my shoulder toward the water and noticed that there were a small handful of swimmers who were still to finish, behind me, out of a field of around 300. But it didn’t matter. I was just relieved, proud and happy to finish.

As I drove away, my thoughts turned to my next long race of the season and how much I was looking forward to it, my fears of coming last gently receding.

24. What caused the author to give up the swimming events last year?

25. How did the author feel when she competed in the Jubilee River 10 km race?

A. Patient.    B. Discouraged.   C. Delighted.    D. Anxious.

26. What does the word “receding” in the last paragraph refer to?

A. Arising.    B. Quitting.      C. Disappearinging.      D. Strengthening.

27. What message does this article mainly convey?

A. Never should we give up.

B. Constant dripping water wears away the stone.

C. The process is more important than the result.

D. A good beginning is half done.

"It is my daily mission to just get through the day," or "I just don't feel like going to school, but maybe today is going to be a good day. " This is a struggle for kids and teens who suffer harm at the hands of their bullies(恃强凌弱者). Unfortunately, these are not just random quotes, these were my thoughts when I was younger and I'm sure the thoughts of millions of other kids.

According to National Education Assn, statistics indicate that about 282,000 students in secondary schools each month are physically attacked and 90% of them report being victims of bullying.

It is not just a single problematic concept and it does not only affect a few children, it affects all of us, our community, and it should be considered a school wide problem. How many deadly shootings on school campuses has our nation witnessed in recent years? According to reports, many were tied to a history of school bullying, and revenge was the shooters' motivation.

Our school systems are continuously negatively affected. According to the American Psychological Assn. , schools where students reported a high rate of bullying had lower scores on standardized tests. This issue is affecting the schools' ability to meet federal requirements to receive governmental funding and creates an immense pressure upon school officials to improve their standardized test scores and to keep their school's recognition. Bullying can be related to absence, lower grades and dropping out of school altogether

The BRAVE Act policy requires that all types of bullying be reported to the appropriate authorities within seven days. If society wants to end school bullying and carry on stricter polices, they should support this proposed law. Every child and teen needs someone to stand up for them, and it is our duty to see that every community has a great school system that provides a safe environment and offers equal educational protection.

28. Which of the following is true according to the passage?

A. Many students stay home to avoid school due to their bad performances in school.

B. Many deadly shootings happened on school campuses because shooters hate school.

C. School bullying is more than an individual problem.

D. School bullying has little effects on school.

29. Which of the following can be the effect of school bullying?

A. Lower grades, safe environment and absence

B. Lower grades, violent crime and absence

C. More dropouts, absence and school's recognition

D. More dropouts, absence and improved test scores

30.  What should be done to end school bullying?

A. the society should support the proposed law.

B. parents should care more about their children

C. schools should punish their school bullies

D students should learn to protect themselves.

31. What's the purpose of this passage?

A. To introduce what school bullying is.

B. To explain the horrible effects of school bullying.

C. To criticize school bullies.

D. To call on the society to end school bullying.

Why do we cry? The main reason, say scientists, is because we are human.

As far as they can tell, no other creature cries emotional tears the way we humans do, despite a number of reports of an elephant or gorilla not just making sad sounds but actually flowing tears.

Interested by one such report of an Indian elephant crying after being caught, Charles Darwin sent a co-worker to check it out, but he couldn’t confirm it.

If emotional tears are indeed a uniquely human act, there must be an evolutionary advantage to crying, possibly a big one, but what?

Psychologist Robert R. Provine at the US’s university of Maryland carried out some research. In a paper published in the journal Evolutionary Psychology, he reported that tears may have evolved to give more charms to facial expressions of emotions, including sadness.

In an experiment, Provine ‘s team asked 80 college students to rate the intensity(强度) of facial expressions of sadness. Half of the pictures showed a person with tears flowing down his or her face, while the other half were the same pictures but with the tears digitally removed. These pictures were shown to the students with “distractor” pictures of people with other facial expressions.

The students overwhelmingly ranked the pictures showing tears as revealing more sadness than the same faces without tears.

The fact that animals probably don’t cry emotional tears and the fact that it takes newborns several months to add tears to their crying support the researchers' belief that emotional crying is a recent evolutionary development.

And in a paper published in Evolutionary Psychology in response to Provine’s work, Israeli evolutionary biologist Oren Hasson at Tel Aviv University said that emotional tears may also act as a call for help and for bonding.

But there’s another reason why emotional tears may have evolved, said William H. Frey, a US biochemist. Humans evolved the ability to shed tears as a means to reduce stress, and evolution favors this because it has survival value. ’says Frey.

Viewing tears not just as communication signals but also as stress relievers may help explain why people don’t just cry when there’s an audience, but also cry alone when there’s nobody around to receive the communication.

32. Robert R. Provine’s study shows that people cry to           •

One very important component of optimism is gratitude or feeling grateful. In fact, there is a strong connection between a grateful attitude and a heightened sense of well-being. Appreciate all the positives in your life by starting a gratitude journal in order to remember what you're grateful for. _________36_____.

Feeling down? Instead of feeling sorry for yourself waiting for the universe to throw you a bone try acting like you ’re happy-even if you are not. A sincere smile and a forced smile will cause the same chemical reactions in your brain, so you can actually fool your mind into feeling better by making it react chemically as if things were going well.    37     Reassure(使----安心、) yourself that everything is good— even if you don’t feel it.

“____38_______ If you’re stuck in traffic, then everything else must be going horribly too,” says Anne Parker, a wellness counselor. By blowing negative events out of proportion, you’re setting yourself up for feeling down all day. Instead, acknowledge that you’re stuck in traffic, but also bring to mind something good, like the beautiful scenery outside the window. That way, you’ll get in the habit of forbidding negative circumstances from blanketing your whole day.

Swearing to lose 20 pounds or to run a marathon seems like goals leading to happiness, but they take time to achieve. ____39______ You may even end up admitting that you have been defeated. However, if you focus on the small milestones that occur along the way, you will feel positive about your progress, which will give you the strength to keep going.

_____40_____ Try making someone else’s day better. A report by United Healthcare and Volunteer Match found that volunteers are 72 % more likely to characterize themselves as optimistic compared with non-volunteers. Plus, 89% of volunteers say that volunteering has improved their sense of well- being, and 92% say that it enriches their sense of purpose in life.

A. Want to give your attitude a lift?

B. Try to help someone in need.

C. Act in an optimistic way-smile, laugh, tell a joke.

D. People tend to think in an either-or way.

E. By remembering the pleasant things in your life, you can actually turn a negative attitude around.

F. By focusing on not having accomplished them yet, you will start to feel down on yourself.

G. You’ll fail to appreciate more important things in your life.

Are you facing a situation  61  makes you feel upset? To be honest, I am.

I usually start the morning by checking the social networking website Facebook, only  62   (see) that I’ve already fallen behind. A workmate has written a new book. Two of my  63  (hero) have completed a big project. One of my old college friends has posted a video for an online program she   64  (take) at the moment. She looks successful, shiny and charming  65  I’m still in bed, bleary-eyed.

Am I really falling behind? Did these people post any of these things to make me feel bad?

The answer is no. It’s  66  (terrible) easy to see social media as a reminder of all the things I’m not doing and dreams I’m not fulfilling. It is not a social problem 67 a comparison problem. All these years I’ve learned one thingDon’t compare your insides with someone else’s outsides. You have no idea  68  it took for other people to get where they are. Don’t act like it was effortless or pure luck. It’s much  69  (easy) to look at someone “up there” and be curious  70  what they have than to be happy for them and make yours better.

At the age of twelve, I get a nice bike as a birthday gift. So excited I that I couldn’t wait to try my hand at riding it. Besides, it was harder than expecting. The bike seemed too heavy for me to control and I fell off the bike over and over again. I was about to give up while my father came and encouraged me to keep going. With more practice, I found me doing better and better. Looking back, I feel I would not be able to ride a bike if I had lost my heart.
