The Omicron Covid variant has been found to multiply about 70 times quicker than the original and Delta versions of coronavirus in tissue samples taken from the bronchus (支气管), the main tubes from the windpipe to the lungs, in laboratory experiments that could help explain its rapid transmission. The study, by a team from the University of Hong Kong, also found that the new variant grew 10 times slower in lung tissue, which the authors said could be an indicator of lower disease severity. Michael Chan, who led the work, said the result needed to be interpreted with caution because severe disease is determined not only by how quickly the virus replicates (复制) but also by a person's immune response. "It is also noted that by infecting many more people, a very infectious virus may cause more severe disease and death even though the virus itself may be less pathogenic (致病的), " he said. "Therefore, taken together with our recent studies showing that the Omicron variant can partially escape immunity from vaccines and past infection, the overall threat from the Omicron variant is likely to be very significant. " Jeremy Kamil, an associate professor of microbiology and immunology at Louisiana State University Health Shreveport, pointed out that Delta, which turned out to be more pathogenic, showed a similar pattern of replicating more slowly in the lungs. "These authors found Omicron replicates fantastically well--even far better than either Delta or the original virus--in bronchial tissue, " Kamil said. "This could in some ways contribute to an advantage in transmission between people. " Kamil added, "Of course, a huge component of Omicron's transmissibility in real life is going to be its potential to escape neutralising antibodies that protect against infection in the first place. It's very likely spreading well even between vaccinated people, especially those who haven't recently gotten a booster shot. " The findings, together with other recent work showing Omicron infects cells more readily, add to an emerging picture that the variant may be intrinsically more transmissible in addition to escaping existing immunity.

It was a method favoured by the inventor Thomas Edison and the artist Salvador Dali. Waking from a nap exactly at the point before deep sleep in an effort to inspire creativity. Edison held a metal ball in his hand so that if he nodded off he would drop it and the sound would wake him. For Dali, it was a key landing on a plate. Now scientists have found that they might have been onto something. Researchers at the Paris Brain Institute studied people's ability to find a hidden rule in a maths puzzle. Identifying the trick would make solving the problem far simpler but to do so required thinking creatively. The scientists found that participants who had been woken just before falling into a deep sleep, using a technique like that used by Edison and Dali, were more likely to find the shortcut. This "twilight zone" is known as non-rapid eye movement sleep stage 1, or N1. Scientists described it like an exaggerated form of mind-wandering, where dream-like thoughts fill the mind. It is thought that as people start to disengage (脱离) from their environment they can "freely watch their minds wander, while maintaining their ability to identify creative sparks (火花)". For the study 103 people were given a maths problem to solve. To reach the final answer they had to apply the rules step by step but, unknown to them, a "hidden rule" would allow them to bypass most of the steps and get to the solution much more quickly. The results showed that 83 percent of those in the N1 group had found the shortcut, compared with 31 percent in the group who were awake and 14 percent of those in a deep sleep. Researchers conclude that the brain activity common to the twilight zone between sleep and wakefulness set off creative sparks. "Although the neural mechanisms (神经机制) involved are not yet known, our findings suggest that there is a creative sweet spot within the twilight zone, " said Dr Thomas Andrillon, co-author of the study.

AI, 5G and other digital technologies are not only changing our lives but shaping the economy as well. China's six major commercial banks are stepping up digital wallet efforts to provide new trend for the E-CNY (电子人民币) trials in the country. The purpose, China's bankers said, is not aimed at taking the place of privately-run payment platforms, such as Alipay and WeChat Pay. Instead, this official electronic payment system is being done so that all cash in circulation (流通) can be followed. Compared with Alipay and WeChat payments, E-CNY features anonymity (匿名) and security. E-commerce platforms that accept payments via E-CNY will not have access to users' personal information. E-CNY users can open an anonymous digital wallet by registering a mobile phone number, and their information won't be revealed to any third-party institutions. E-CNY users' privacy protection is at the highest level among all the existing payment tools. Similar to Alipay and WeChat payments, using E-CNY requires an account. After getting the other party's account number, users can enter the amount of digital money to be paid and then enter the password to complete the transaction (交易). However, the processes behind these transactions are different. For electronic payments, the money has to go through a third party, and the receivers will get the money only when they withdraw it from banks. But E-CNY transactions only need a payer and a receiver. Therefore, it guarantees risk-free payments, helps prevent financial crimes and improves the efficiency of transactions. In simple terms, E-CNY can be considered "money", while electronic payments are like "wallets". The successful launch of the E-CNY may change the existing market structure, which is mainly dominated by Alipay and WeChat Pay now. The banks may return to a leading position in the digital currency system. But China's central bank won't get more money into circulation, since every yuan issued digitally will basically cancel one yuan circulating in physical form.

What are "soft skills"? You may ask. "Soft skills" is the term used for those skills that are not technical or job—related. These skills characterize your relationships with other people, or how you approach life and work. In the workplace, soft skills are considered to be a complement to hard skills, which refer to a person's knowledge and occupational skills. Imagine you are working in a company producing something, let's say light bulbs. You come up with a new technology. Your light bulbs are suddenly much better than others and your profits go up. But, after a while, your competitors get hold of the technology. Suddenly, the light bulbs are all the same again and your profits are decreasing. At this time, you still need the new technology. Hard skills are like your technology: anyone can acquire them through formal education, training programs, and concentrated effort, and they are necessary. Without them you will not be able to operate in the workplace. Soft skills are your unique selling point. Plus, soft sills are regarded as the ability to recognize and manage your own and others' emotions. However, in reality, they go beyond that, and into the wider areas of how you organize yourself and how you approach life. It has been suggested that a number of professions soft skills may be more important than career skills over the long term. Like hard skills, soft skills require a lot of practice to make you really skilled at using them. You measure your success in developing soft skills in how well you manage relationships with those around you. These include family, friends, and co—workers, as well as customers and those who provide you with goods or services.
B. They also give you a competitive edge in the workplace and even in life. C. However, what you need most is a reputation for good customer service. D. One reason why soft skills are so valued is that they help better human connections. E. Unlike hard skills, there are no exams to prove that you can do them. F. They include social skills, interpersonal skills, and a positive attitude. G. Soft skills can help you a lot in business competition. |

Chris Dykstra hadn't expected what began as a casual walk around the neighborhood with the family one night led to a journey of friendship. Chris Dykstra, a traffic manager in Shorewood, Illinois had noticed a few raccoons (浣熊) wandering around his garbage. However, he didn't think too much of it. One night when his wife Julie was taking their four children for a walk after dinner, they tracked the raccoons back to their neighbor's roof. A further investigation showed that the raccoons had chewed a hole in the neighbor's roof and were living in her attic (阁楼). The couple had lived in their current home for five years. Yet they had very little contact with the neighbor. They knew her first name was Dorene and that she liked to watch their children play in the backyard, and that's about it. Concerned for their neighbor's well-being, Julie decided to knock on the door to make their neighbor aware of the raccoons living in the attic. Julie knocked on the door and rang the doorbell, but no one answered. She decided to ask the local police department to do a wellness check on their neighbor. Two police officers and an animal control officer visited the neighbor's home to conduct a wellness check. This time the neighbor — Miss Dorene Shock — opened the door. Miss Shock was surprised to see someone check in on her. The officers made her aware of the raccoons in her attic. Having been told the whole thing, Miss Shock welcomed Julie into her house. After touring the house, Julie learned that Miss Shock lived a poor life. Her home barely had any furniture, and she even didn't have a TV set. Besides, her house was in need of additional repairs and updates including new light bulbs. 注意:1) 续写词数应为 150 左右; 2)续写部分分为两段,每段的开头语已为你写好。 Paragraph 1: Chris and his wife knew this was an opportunity to help a neighbor in need.
