Whether you're a comic fan or not, you're bound to have seen posters or social media posts about Marvel's newest blockbuster(大片), Black Panther. Black Panther was first created in 1966 by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby and was transformed into a film this year. The story follows T'Challa, a man living in a fictional African nation named Wakanda. Black Panther is the first non-white superhero to have his own film, making this a milestone movie.

But what makes this film different from all the other Marvel films? Take a look at the cast list and you'll find that the majority are black actors and actresses. Sure, black people have been in movies but look at the roles they play and you'll find that they are often cast as the criminals, slaves or poverty-stricken individuals. Not this one!

The film also takes a step forward in representation, as black children can now look up and see themselves and their stories represented in media where they couldn't before. For too long, a large portion of our population has been under-represented in media, that group of people being those who are not white. So it's refreshing and about time to have a film which celebrates Africa positively and adequately!

Michelle Obama, the former first lady phrased it beautifully when she tweeted, "I loved this movie and I know it will inspire people of all backgrounds to dig deep and find the courage to be heroes of their own stories. Thank you, the entire Black Panther team! Because of you, young people will finally see superheroes that look like them on the big screen." Her post has been shared more than 140,000 times.

The film has become a hit. It has already broken records, having earned more that $607 million in the United States only since its release in Februry. In the following days, observers expect Black Panther will pass The Avengers as the highest-earning superhero film in history.

  1. (1) According to the passage, which fact sets Black Panther apart from the other films about black people?
A . Black people are cast as the criminals and slaves. B . Africa's landscapes and cultures are fairly shown off. C . Black people become superheroes for the first time. D . Black people have starred in the film Black Panther.
  2. (2) What do we know about Michelle Obama's attitude to the film Black Panther?
A . She acknowledges the entire Black Panther team. B . She loves the film in that it was shot in Africa. C . Her post about the film received little reaction. D . She thinks the comic book Black Panther better than the film.
  3. (3) Which of the following is NOT mentioned in the review?

I didn't understand the irony immediately. Only on the way home. The book I had just returned to our library was called "Unquiet Landscape," by Chritopher Neve. He widened my view.

But the ironic word for me in his book's title, I realized, was "unquiet". It applied not to the landscape but to our local library. I have visited it again since then, and my conclusion is much the same: There is no longer a quiet place.

On both of my visits the library was packed with small children, and they were doing rather a lot of small-children things, such as dancing in circles, singing, jumping up and down, and so on. Various adults sitting around were clearly not discouraging them, rather the opposite.

I wasn't exactly shocked. But I have to say that my understanding of library behavior and purpose changed somewhat. All my upbringing about libraries was that they were sanctums, places of escape in a noisy world. If one so much as cleared one's throat in a library, one was likely to be stared at by the librarians — not to mention tolerating the disapproval of fellow library users enjoying their post-lunch nap. The first school I attended had a library that was entirely traditional in function. In it, we boys did (or were expected to do) one thing only: read. The second school I attended allowed one to write as well as read in the library.

Since those days, my attitude, I hope, has changed a little. I've come across some very pleasant librarians eager to help with my projects. Some of them are surprisingly generous with providing access to their books, which are as dear to them as their own children. And the silence rule has, over the years, become much less strict. Even quite loud laughter, I find, is not always frowned upon.

  1. (1) What did the author do after finishing the book?
A . He visited the lands mentioned in the book. B . He expressed his admiration to the book winter. C . He kept his habit of staying quiet in the library. D . He made a close observation of the local library.
  2. (2) What did the author find out about the adults in the library?
A . They made lots of noise. B . They were soft with the kids. C . They didn't listen to the librarians. D . They couldn't stop their kids bad behavior.
  3. (3) What change about the libraries has the author experienced in his schooldays?
A . The libraries were more traditional in function. B . The libraries were expanding very fast. C . The libraries were more tolerant of noise. D . The libraries were getting better-equipped.

"All puppies are cute," explains Clive Wynne, the head of Arizona State University's canine-science laboratory. "But not all puppies are equally cute." Indeed, recent research indicates that peak puppy cuteness serves important purposes and might play an important role in binding dog and owner together.

In a study, Wynne and his colleagues sought to pin down, scientifically, the timeline of puppy cuteness. Their finding was: People consistently considered dogs most attractive when they were six to eight weeks old. This age, Wynne says, is an important developmental period: Mother dogs stop nursing their young around the eighth week, after which puppies rely on humans for survival. Peak cuteness, then, is no accident.

Humans seem to be especially vulnerable (脆弱的) to cute things. Research dating back to the 1940s shows that almost any creature with babylike features — large eyes, a bulging forehead, short limbs — is able to draw our liking. But puppy cuteness is uniquely human-directed. Other research makes clear just why dogs seek to command our attention. Oxytocin, the so-called love hormone, has been found to suddenly increase in dogs and their owners after they look in each other's eyes. In other words, the more dogs get us to look at them, the more tightly bonded (联系) to them we grow.

Born blind and basically deaf, puppies aren't interactive (互动的) in their first weeks of life, and Wynne notes that many people find animals in this stage alien and unattractive. A recent study focused on humans showed that, similar to six-week-old puppies, six-month-old babies are seen as significantly cuter than newborns, which inspires a flood of social interactions, such as petting, playing, and baby-talking. These acts are developmentally fundamental to both babies and puppies.

  1. (1) From Wynne's research we can learn that cuteness is something____.
A . puppies are born with B . that helps puppies survive C . that increases steadily as puppies grow D . that helps puppies to defend against danger
  2. (2) What can-we learn about Oxytocin from the passage?
A . Oxytocin is a hormone that will inspire love. B . Oxytocin is a hormone that only exists in dogs. C . Oxytocin can be increased by constant touch. D . Oxytocin will increase greatly when dogs stare at us.
  3. (3) The underlined word "alien" in Paragraph 4 probably means____.
    A . unique B . lovely C . strange D . dangerous
  4. (4) What's the best title for this passage?
    A . From ugly to cute B . Man's best friend C . Survival of the cutest D . Loveliest animals: puppies

How to Become a Glass Half-Full Person

Times are tough and many people are struggling. But just because we can find lots of reasons for feeling down doesn't mean that we should. We all get to wake up every day and choose whether we are going to be a glass half-full, or a glass half-empty person.

Set your intention. Before you step out of bed, take one minute to set your intention for the day by coming up with one word about the attitude or spirit you want to bring to the day. It helps you better focus your time and energy.

Carry yourself like an optimist. Scientists have actually proven that how you present and carry yourself on the outside has a huge impact on how you feel on the inside. Talk with people as though you were the outgoing, confident, optimistic and successful person you wish to be and you will attract all sorts of positive people and opportunities into your life.

Often the very thing we need to improve out circumstances require courage. That is, closing the gap between where you are now and where you would like to be in will require stepping outside your comfort zone and doing something that scares you away.

Turn a problem into an opportunity. You can't solve your problems by complaining about them.Where pessimists (悲观主义者) see problems, optimists find opportunities. If you change the way you look at your problems, your problems change and transform into a rich array of opportunities to grow, learn and discover inner resources you never knew you had!

Please try one of these strategies today and let me know how it helps! As an optimist, I am sure it will!

A. Perform an act of courage.

B. Expect good things to happen.

C. Stand tall and smile confidently.

D. Being intentional acts like a compass.

E. Surround yourself with positive people.

Every culture has it own folklore. Folklore is a collection of tales and bits of (wise) that teach students how to behave and think. It includes legends, songs, art, tales, myths and proverbs. People pass on folklore from one generation to the next.

Folklore helps keep history alive. For example, legends are folktales that  (base) on true stories. The plain truth about history is not always  (excite). To keep listeners interested, a storyteller invents details. The tale becomes so interesting that people retell  many times. Then it becomes a legend.

Tall tales are folktales that mix the truth  fiction, or events that did not really happen. People somtimes tell tall tales to fool people.  example of a tall tale is the story about Paul Bunyan, the giant lumberjack, or woodcutter. The tale says that Bunyan's clothes were so large that his shirt buttons were wagon wheels. Tales about Bunyan take place at his lumber camp. The tales are fun  (hear). They also show what life was like in a lumber camp.

Myths are folktales that describe the (create) of the world. They describe how the first human beings (come) into the world. Myths focus on gods or heavenly beings. The gods may be human or animal in form. The first people to tell myths thought that the stories were true — and  did their listeners. Myths may teach about the beliefs and values of a group of people.

It was an Art lesson. Rachel sat at the desk watching her classmates busy preparing the water jars and paints. She understood why Mrs. Weston asked her to sit down and got Lisa to fetch everything for her. It was always a disaster when Rachel tried to do Art!

Rachel sighed and reached out to dip her brush in some black paint and—oh, no! She knocked over the jar. The water spread across the desk and drowned the paper. Lisa called Mrs. Weston to see what Rachel had done. Rachel went red in the face. She jumped to her feet to get a cloth. Her chair fell over backwards. She turned round and her paintbrush caught Lisa across the face, giving her a black moustache. Lisa was so surprised that she fell back against a wire bookstand. It came crashing down and the books went all over the floor.

How clumsy(笨拙的)! Rachel thought as she went home on the bus. The bus stopped outside her house. She jumped up and her elbow (肘部) knocked a woman's hat right over her eyes. Oh, no! Rachel said sorry, got off and ran indoors. Mum wasn't in the kitchen but lay in bed as she caught an awful cold. Rachel offered to make a cup of tea but Mum would rather wait for Dad. Rachel sighed. She understood Mum was afraid she would spill (溅出) it.

“But would you go to Mrs. Willow for some cold medicine?” asked Mum. Rachel turned to the door at once. “But Rachel, Mrs. Willow's house is full of beautiful things, so if she asks you to come in, you'd better say no.” Rachel sighed and ran out.

Mrs. Willow was an old lady with white hair and sharp blue eyes living in an old house. She opened the door and invited her in. Rachel said why she came and that she preferred to wait outside remembering her mother's warning. Mrs. Willow insisted Rachel come inside. Rachel took a deep breath and stepped in. She looked round Mrs. Willow's sitting room and saw at once why Mum had been worried.
