    If you think you are too shy and want to be a little braver, just try the following things: Be open to others. Tell people you are shy. There is no need to hide it. When they get to know you are a shy kid, they will understand you better. This also helps you feel more comfortable in talks.

    Try to smile more. When you smile, people think you are friendly and easy to talk with. Remember that other people have feelings, too; and most people will stay away from an angry-looking face.

    It is school holiday time and Mitch Morrow's family have just moved to a new home in a new place. Mitch can't stop worrying about what his new school is going to be like. He  is not even sure about the neighbours. Next door live the Bull family and they have two children, Di and Bruce.  

    The older of the two,  Bruce,  is a large boy,  about Mitch's age. Mitch. Watches him carry big rocks. He looks really strong and unkind. Mitch gives him the name Bruiser（彪形大汉） because he has a black eye. Did he get it in a fight? Mitch imagines all the worst possible things about Bruiser. He is probably the class bully (恶霸). In his mind Mitch thinks of him as the enemy.

    Things seem to get more worring for Mitch. He finds out he will be in the same class as Bruiser. Then on the first day of school he learns that Bruiser is his buddy for the day.

    This is a lovely story for young readers to read or listen to. It has a wonderful message for all children about facing their fears —real and imagined.

    The pictures in the book catch the worry Mitch feels and make Bruiser rcally look like a bad guy.

    My only complaint is the colour of the printing of the text. Why there are pages of different coloured print I cannot tell. They may create problems for children with poor eyesight.

    I give it four stars.

    A forest fire that burned 55 square kilometers was finally brought under control on Wednesday morning. The fire started on Sunday in Black Bear State Park and quickly spread to nearby areas.

    On Monday, police evacuated (疏散) the small town of Lawson and asked the people to leave their homes. The fire destroyed 20 homes in the area and caused heavy damage (损坏) to 40 others.

    Nobody was hurt. Officials said the damage to homes and cars was between $l million and $2 million. The fire spread quickly in the hot, dry weather. Firefighting was difficult because of strong winds. Firemen from 55 fire departments in the state joined the National Fire Service to put out the fire. Some kept fighting for 24 hours. Fire engines (消防车) and helicopters (直升机) dropped water onto the fire. In order to control the fire, firemen cleared a way around the fire.

    Police closed King Road to traffic on Tuesday because of heavy smoke. Thousands of tourists had to drive an hour north to Queen Road to pass the fire area. Local police think open fires left by tourists might be the cause of the accident and ask tourists to follow the rules in case such accidents ever happen again.

    Create a comfortable reading environment.

    Choose a special place with right furnishings(家具陈设), blankets and pillows for your children and put a bookcase of your children's books.   If your children feel they have got their own special place for reading, they will probably spend time in their little space with all their new favourite books.

    If you want your children to learn to love reading, set aside a few minutes every day to read together, no matter how busy you are.  Plan to go to bed a few minutes earlier each night, so your children have the time to choose a book to read.     Make the library and bookstore a special treat.

Many local people live in houses made of wood.

The Inuit mainly make a living by hunting and fishing. Now, their life is greatly influenced by climate (气候) change. For example, many animals they hunt for food are disappearing. There is less food for the reindeer they keep, too. They face more terrible weather, such as snowstorms. Hunting becomes more dangerous. Hunters may accidentally fall into water if the ice becomes too thin. Actually, the temperature in the Arctic is 18℃ higher than it was 125 years ago. All Arctic ice may disappear during the summer in less than 100 years.

    Welcome to our neighborhood. It's very beautiful and you will love it. I live with my parents and brother in a big house on Joe's Street. The street is not very long, and it's quiet. There is a bookstore across from our house. I often buy books there. I also like to go to the library near the bookstore because I like reading very much. There is a park on the left of the bookstore. My brother Sam and I often play in the park after school. These are my favorite places in our neighborhood.

Comic books first became very popular with young people in the United States in the 1940s and 1950s. . Because they are short, cheap and appear a month in local shops. Many are about superheroes such a superman and Batman. In comic books, superheroes are always good. . As the the superhero always wins.

You can still buy this kind of comic book, but in the 1970s and 1980s a new form of comic book appeared. . The change from the old to the new style is perhaps clearest in Frank Miller's Batman: The dark Knight Returns. . While he tries to be good, he is not always successful, and he does not always win. In the same way, in the graphic novel Watchmen, the superheroes are like real human beings with all their problems, and they are not always good people. Watchmen became very popular, and was the only graphic novel on Time magazine's list of the best 100 books.

While graphic novels look like comic books, they are more like novels, and most are not really for children.

Every year there are endless talks and suggestions on how to protect the environment. As for students, what should we do?

Plant Trees

The most important method to protect the environment is to plant trees. Trees may take longer to grow, but they serve the next generation(一代).

Save water

Water is life. What we should do is to save water. The more time we take, the more water we are likely to use. As we brush our teeth, turn off the tap.

Limit Car Use

It may not be as comfortable as the car, but we will make a significant contribution to protecting the environment.

Reduce Food Waste

Research shows that food that goes to waste in the world every year, is enough to feed almost a billion hungry people. We can make a list of the food we are going to buy, and never order much more than we need in the restaurant.

We depend on the environment for living, and the environment depends on us for living as well. As long as we keep on doing the simple things, we can protect the environment better.

Everybody knows that healthy eating habits are important. You may want to know whether your eating habits are healthy or not. Read and check your habits now. Here are five good eating habits for you.

 Drink at least 8 glasses of water a day. You may need even more water when you are exercising.

  Breakfast is the most important meal of a day. You will have more energy after eating breakfast.

  If you don't have time to go out, take a sandwich with you for a quick lunch. Don't eat lunch which has too much fat. If you don't have lunch, that will be bad for your health.

 We should eat fruits and vegetables every day. Add a banana to your breakfast, have a salad with lunch, and eat some vegetable at dinner.

 Try to have dinner at least 3 hours before you go to bed. Your body needs time to digest (消化) most of food before you rest for 8 hours.

Dear Liz,

Thailand is wonderful. Life in Bangkok is busy and interesting. My host family lives in a nice and quiet town outside the city. There are Mr and Mrs Phairat, their son Sanan and their daughter Chinda in the family.

I go to an international (国际的) school with Sanan and Chinda. I'm good at the spoken language, but Thai writing is very difficult. The cooking class is my favorite. When I come back, I will cook you a real Thai meal.

Last weekend I went to Pattaya Beach with Sanan and Chinda by car. I thought it was great. Next month we will go to Phuket Island. My parents went there last year, Now Chinda is teaching me how to swim. I hope I can swim happily with her on Phuket Island.

Elephants are very important in Thailand. People use them to do work. They also ride them and wash them. They look very interesting.
