America's holiday shopping season started on Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving.

Shoppers make the most money this time of year, about 20 percent to 30 percent of all revenue all year. About 136 million people shopped during the Thanksgiving Holiday weekend.

In an era of instant information, shoppers can use their mobile phones to find deals. Nearly 80 percent of this year's holiday shoppers, or about 183.8 million people, shopped on Cyber Monday. Online spending on Black Friday rose 15 percent to hit $2.7 billion this year. Cyber Monday spending increased 12 percent to $3 billion. NBC News reported that for many, shopping online was a more comfortable alternative than crowded malls.

The shift to online shopping has had a big impact on solid shopping malls. Since 2010, more than 24 shopping malls have closed and an additional 60 are struggling. Fortune says the weakest of the malls have closed. However, the business in malls is thriving again, it adds.  According to a survey, 94.2percent of malls were full with shops by the end of 2014.

The average American consumer will spend about $805 on gifts. That's about $630.5 billion between November and December – an increase of 3.7 percent from last year.

That goes to China's Singles' Day, celebrated on November 11, which posted record sales of $14.3 billion in 2015.

Living aboard can help you make smarter career decisions

Living in a foreign country doesn't just give you the opportunity to learn about different cultures, it can also boost your self-awareness and improve your career.

That's according to a recent study 1 by the Kenan-Flagler Business School at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

A team of researchers conducted six studies involving 1,874 subjects and found that living abroad increases 2 they call “self-concept clarity.” This is defined as the extent to which a person is able to clearly and confidently define their beliefs. It has been 3 with a slew of benefits, 4 mental well-being, better stress management and enhanced job performance, the 5 write in Harvard Business Review.

In one of the studies, participants were asked to indicate how strongly they 6statements like, “In general, I have a clear sense of who I am and what I am,” and, “It is often hard for me to make up my mind about things 7 I don't really know what I want.”

Those who had lived abroad, the research found, reported a 8 sense of self than those who had not.

In another study, participants who had lived abroad were randomly assigned to two groups. Half were asked to reflect on the experience of living abroad while the 9 group was asked to reflect on the 10 of living in their home country. The study found that subjects who reflected on living abroad reported higher self-concept clarity than those who reflected on living 11.

Living abroad also forces people to 12 against different cultural values and norms. Repeatedly having to do this allows people to 13which values and norms truly define who they are, the researchers explain.

Finally, the study found that the length of time lived abroad had a far greater 14 than the number of foreign countries lived in. The longer people lived abroad, the more likely they were to develop a better 15 of themselves.

As organizations become increasingly global, these findings have 16 implications in the workplace. When it comes to 17 talent, for example, recruiters(征募)highly value job candidates who have international experience because they appear more 18, outgoing and knowledgeable about global affairs, according to the Financial Times.

Further, living abroad better 19 you to make challenging career decisions, according to the researchers.

“It stands to reason,” they write, “that having a clear sense of self explains which types of career options best match one's 20 and fulfill one's values, thereby enabling people to be clearer and more confident about their career decisions.”

For each blank in the following passages there are four words or phrases marked A, B, C and D. Fill in each blank with the word or phrase that best fits the context.

For many people today, reading is no longer relaxation. To keep up their work they must read letters, reports, trade publications, interoffice communications, not to mention newspapers and magazines; a never-ending flood of words. In getting a job advancing, the ability to read and comprehend 1 can mean the difference between success and failure. Yet the unfortunate fact is that most of us are 2 readers. Most of us develop poor reading habits at an early age, and never 3 them. The main shortage lies in the actual stuff of language itself – words. Taken individually, words have little4 until they are strung together into phrases, sentences and paragraphs. Unfortunately, 5, the untrained reader does not read groups of words. He laboriously read one word at a time, often regressing to 6 words or passages. Regression, the tendency to look back over what you have just read, is a common 7 habit in reading. Another bad habit which 8 the speed of reading is vocalization – sounding each word either 9 or mentally as one reads.

To overcome these bad habits, some reading clinics use a device called an accelerator, which moves a bar (or curtain) down the page at a predetermined speed. The bar is set a slightly 10 rate than the reader finds 11, in order to "stretch" him. The accelerator forces the reader to read fast, making word-by-word reading, regression and sub-vocalization, practically 12. At first comprehension is sacrificed for speed. But when you learn to read ideas and concepts, you will not only read faster, but your comprehension will 13. Many people have found their reading skill 14 improved after some training. Take Charles Au, a business manager, for instance, his reading rate was a reasonably good 172 words a minute before the training, now it is an excellent 1,378 words a minute. He is delighted that now he can go through a lot more reading material in a(n) 15 period of time.

The British Isles consist of two large islands. One is called Ireland and 1 Britain. Britain, or Great Britain, is the larger one of these two islands, and it is 2 into three parts: Scotland, Wales and England.

The United Kingdom is that part of the British Isles3 by the Queen. The Welsh too do not 14 themselves as the English, and have a culture and 15 a language of their own.

Ireland became part of the United Kingdom in 1801, but for forty years the "Irish 16 "was the greatest headache of the United Kingdom. 17, Ireland was divided into two: Northern Ireland still 18 to the United Kingdom, and in 1922 the rest of Ireland 19 to found an Irish Free State, later called Eire and now the Republic of Ireland.

The Republic of Ireland does not regard itself as part of Britain, and is not now even a supporter of the Commonwealth of Nations. Unlike the major Commonwealth countries, it did not lift a finger to 20 British in the Second World War and now wants the whole of Ireland to be a republic.

Rick Stevenson, 16 years old, spends every minute he can on the mountain. He and his friends go snowboarding every weekend." It's incredible. No one goes skiing anymore," he says. "That's for the1folks".

Today more and more young athletes are taking part in risky activities called "extreme sports", which are a new, words such as" rage", "Juice" and "energy". They have their own 2 words such as "rage"," juice" and "energy". They have their own clothing such as skin-tight bicycle3in rainbow colours. And they're not for the elderly people or the easily 4 ones. Their philosophy is to get as close to the5as possible.

Young athletes want risk and excitement—the 6 to the edge the better. They snowboard over cliffs and ride mountain bikes down steep mountains.

Extreme sports started as an alternative to more expensive sports. A city kid who didn't have the money to buy 7 sports equipment could get a skateboard and have fun. But now it has become a whole new area of sports with specialised equipment and high levels of 8.

The X Games is an extreme sports competition, consisting of two versions: a summer competition and a winter competition. The first summer 9 was held in Rhode Island in 1995. The summer competition 10sports such as sky surfing, where people jump from aeroplanes with surfboards 11 to their feet. The winter competition12snowboarding, skiing and snowmobiling.

What makes extreme sports so popular?

"People love the 13 ,"says Murray Nussbaum, who sells sports equipment. "City people want to be 14on the weekend and do something challenging. The new 15 is so much better that people can take more risks 16 getting hurt:" He adds."17you go mountain biking or snowboarding, it's impossible to go back to bike riding or skiing. It's just too boring.

Extreme sports are certainly not for 18.Most people still prefer to play baseball or basketball or watch sports on TV. But extreme sports are definitely gaining 19. "These sports are fresh and exciting. They're the wave of the future. The20is huge," says Nussbaum.

Communication, One Major Part of the Scientific Method

Scientists may feel it their duty to share their guesses, methods, and findings with the rest of the scientific community. This sharing serves two 1. First, it supports the basic deal of skepticism (怀疑论) by making it possible for others to say, "Oh, yeah? Let me check that." It tells others where to see what the scientist saw, and what techniques and tools to use. Second, it gets the word out so that others can use what has been discovered. This is essential because science is a(n) 2 efforts. People who work thousands of miles apart build with and upon each other's discoveries.

The communication of science begins with "peer review", a process of 3an author's scholarly work, research or ideas to the inspection of other experts. It typically has three stages. The first occurs when a scientists seeks funding - from government agencies, foundations, or other 4-- to carry out a research program. He or she must prepare a report describing the intended work, laying out background, hypotheses (假设), planned experiments, expected results, and even the 5 impacts on other fields. Committees of other scientists then 6the report to see whether the scientist knows his or her area, has the necessary abilities, and is realistic in his or her plans.

Once the scientist has the needed 7, has done the work, and has written a report of the results, that reports will go to a scientific journal. Before publishing the report, the journal's editors will show it to other workers in the same or 8fields and ask whether the work was done adequately, the conclusion are justified, and the report should be published.

The third stage of peer review happens are publication, when the broader scientific community gets to see and 9the work.

This three-stage quality-control process can, of course, be faulty. Any scientist with independent wealth can 10the first stage quite easily but such scientists are much, much rarer today than they were a century or so ago. Those who remain are the object of envy. 11, it is fair to say that they are not disapproved as were those who avoid the latter two stages of the "peer review" mechanisms by using press conferences.

On the other hand, it is certainly possible for the standard peer review mechanisms to 12. By their nature, these mechanisms are more likely to 13ideas that are not different from what the reviewers think they already know. Yet the un-traditional or unconventional ideas are not 14wrong, as Alfred Wegener proved when he tried to gain 15for the idea of continental drift in the early twentieth century. It was not until the 1960s that most geologists accepted his ideas as genuine insights.

The requirements for high school graduation have just changed in my community. As a result, all students must 1 sixty hours of service learning, 2 they will not receive a diploma. Service learning is academic learning that also helps the community. 3 of service learning include cleaning up a polluted river, working in a soup kitchen, or tutoring a student. 4 a service experience, students must keep a journal and then write a 5 about what they have learned.

Supporters claim that there are many 6 of service learning. Perhaps most importantly, students are forced to think 7 their own interests and become 8 of the needs of others. Students are also able to learn reallife skills that 9 responsibility, problemsolving, and working as part of a team. 10 students can explore possible careers 11 service learning. For example, if a student wonders what teaching is like, he or she can choose to work in an elementary school classroom a few afternoons each month.

12 there are many benefits, opponents 13 problems with the new requirement. First, they 14 that the main reason students go to school is to learn core subjects and skills. Because service learning is timeconsuming, students spend 15 time studying the core subjects. Second, they believe that forcing students to work without 16 goes against the law. By requiring service, the school takes away an individual's freedom to choose.

In my view, service learning is a great way to 17 to the community, learn new skills, and explore different careers. 18, I don't believe you should force people to help others — the 19 to help must come from the heart. I think the best 20 is one that gives students choices: a student should be able to choose sixty hours of independent study or sixty hours of service. Choice encourages both freedom and responsibility and as young adults, we must learn to handle both wisely.

Residents of urban areas often make use of public transportation on their way to school or the office. But when their final 1 isn't near a bus stop or subway station, those folks have a problem. Transportation experts often 2 to this as the "last mile" problem — finding a way to close the gap between public transportation stops and one's destination.

With the last mile problem in mind, the makers of the URB-E 3 a compact electric vehicle that weighs around 13 kilograms. Unlike bikes, which often don't fit on crowded buses or trains, the URB-E collapses into a form 4 to carry-on luggage. And since the URB-E can be carried 5 anywhere, it's not as vulnerable to thieves as bikes are.

Depending on usage, the URB-E can travel for 32 kilometers on a single 6, reaching a top speed of 24 kilometers per hour. Although there are other vehicles attempting to 7 the last mile issue, the URB-E 8 for its ease of use, portability and affordable price. For the price of a nice laptop, you could have an URB-E to drive to the office.

The URB-E is made from aircraft-grade aluminum and comes in two basic models: the URB-E Commuter and the URB-E GP. The main 9 between the two is that the Commuter model has two rear wheels while the GP has only one. That means the Commuter offers greater stability, as 10 to the GP's ability to make sharper turns like a bicycle.

Both models come with accessories 11 LED front and rear lights and a shock-absorbing seat. They also 12 a smartphone holder and USB charging port right on the steering column. In fact, smartphones play a big role in the URB-E app to do things like monitor battery charge or control the lights. 13 accessories include a cup holder and a folding luggage shelf.

At this year's international Consumer Electronic Show (CES) in Las Vegas, tech website The Verge awarded the URB-E with its "Best Personal Transportation" award. Singing the URB-E's 14, Verge editor Ben Popper said, "The URB-E felt like the kind of vehicle an enlightened citizen of 2030 would own." So why wait that long, when the URB-E is 15 for order now?

Why Thoughtful Gifts Are the Worst Gifts?

During all kinds of holidays, millions of people will buy gifts for loved ones, which is great— 1 that tons of those people make the same mistakes, and buy the 2 gifts.

Roughly 10 percent of gifts are 3 each year—and the percentage of unwanted gifts is surely higher given that nice people may not want to return presents.

What's going on?

Gift buying 4 a deceiving selfish pursuit. We don't actually look for things people want to receive. 5, and to many of our gifts' detriments, we 6 look for things that we want to give. It's an important problem.

The research says 7 .

"Gift givers want to prove how well they know a person by choosing a thoughtful gift," said Mary Steffel, an assistant professor at the University of Cincinnati 8 research has focused on gift-giving. "But people aren't very good at guessing what others want."

Research has shown that givers value the gifts they buy more than recipients (接受者).The result seems to come from a simple wrong belief 9 thoughtful presents are the best presents. They are not. In fact, they 10 just be the worst presents. The more thought you put into a present, the more likely you are to stray from buying what the person you're buying the present for actually wants.

"Gift givers focus on what people are like instead of what people actually would like," said Steffel. "And it's most pronounced when they're shopping for people they are close to."

In other words, people let their gift-giving egos (自我)get 11 the way of great presents. Especially when the recipient is someone they want to show they know really well.

Fortunately, the answer to our 12 on guessing what people want is simple: stop it.

"People want 13 it is they happen to want in the moment, which can be very specific," Steffel said. "You are much better off 14 people what they want."

There is another helpful 15 of thumb. Buy gifts that can be used more broadly. People prefer gift cards to actual gifts, and cash to 16. Here is an example. 17 you have a friend, and your friend really likes margarita (玛格丽特鸡尾酒).You might think of buying that friend a margarita-maker.

But a margarita-maker, 18 it speaks to a specific quality in that friend, is actually a pretty 19 present. Better yet? Give the friend enough cash to buy the device, 20 it, and then accept the reality that they are probably going to buy something else they want much more.

If you've ever been to a Disney Park, you've obviously seen little children running around dressed as their favorite characters. In fact, it's 1 by the park, and you can even purchase a Disney makeover for your kids in the park 2 with authentic costumes (戏服), hairstyles, and makeup by the professionals. But as the kids get 3, they are less likely to be dressed up, and 4 they hit the age of 14, you won't 5 a single one of them in costume.

It isn't because they're “too cool for school”; it's 6 against the rules. According to the Disney Park rule-book, any guest aged 14 or older may be 7 admittance if they are 8 costumes or masks.

15, that doesn't mean that you can't truly get into the 16 of your favorite Disney character the next time you head to one of the parks. 17 Disney fan Leslie Kay began a trend that is called Disney Bounding. In 18, Disney Bounding is dressing up in a non-costume outfit 19 by your favorite character. So maybe you can't dress up in Princess Belle's iconic (标志性的) yellow dress, but you could wear a yellow dress with teacup-themed jewelry. Try to be creative with your 20 the next time you head to one of the parks.

Others think of themselves as cowards, but when they meet danger, they act like 4.

Lenny had always thought of himself as a 5 person. He got worried before examinations. He worried about his job and health. All he wanted in life was to be safe and healthy. Then, on January 15th, 2002, a plane crashed into the Potomac River in Washington. Lenny went to the river to see what was happening. He saw a woman in the 6 water. Lenny did not feel afraid. He kept very 7 and did a very courageous thing. He jumped into the Potomac, 8 to the woman, and kept her head 9 the water. Seventy-eight people died that day. Thanks to Lenny, it was not 10.

When you are in a very 11 situation and feel afraid, the body automatically produces a chemical in the blood. The chemical is called adrenalin. With adrenalin in the blood system, you actually feel stronger and stronger and are 12 to fight or run away. However, when you are absolutely terrified, the body can produce too much adrenalin. When this 13, the muscles become very hard and you find you 14 move at all. You are then paralyzed (使无能为力) with fear. This is 15 when we are very frightened, we sometimes say we're "petrified". This word comes from the Greek word "petros", which means "stone". We are so frightened that we become stonelike.

The Thai government intends to further deepen its digital cooperation with Chinese technology company Huawei, senior Thai officials said at a cloud event held in Bangkok this week.

During the Powering Digital Thailand 2022 on Nov 17-19, Thai deputy Prime Minister Prawit Wongsuwon said digital infrastructure (基础设施), such as5G, is crucial to Thailand's 1 and social development, especially for the country's post-pandemic economic 2.

Badly hit by the COVID-19 pandemic, the tourism-reliant nation registered an economic reduction of 6. 1 percent last year, the worst in more than 20 years. However, the pandemic has significantly sped the 3 of digital technologies in Thailand, where Chinese tech companies have 4 advantages.

During the pandemic, Huawei used its technology to help local hospitals implement systems for automated medical supply, AI-backed 5 and remote treatment, which greatly improved the 6 of hospitals and made healthcare more 7.

Fueled by Thailand's digital roadmap, Huawei has focused on helping the country build 20,000 5G stations in the past two years. 8. Thailand has more than 4. 2 million 5G subscribers leading in 5G adoption among ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) countries.

Another strength of Huawei has been its cloud capabilities. Deng Feng, general manager of Huawei Thailand, said Huawei Cloud is the only cloud service 9 with local data centers in Thailand, considering that data localization is a key trend of global enterprises due to government regulations as well as security concerns.

He emphasized the Huawei will support Thailand's low-carbon and digital development in the future in four areas, including expanding 5G coverage and usage, providing cloud services, creating low-carbon development with digital energy, and 10 industry talents.

Thai Minister of Digital Economy and Society Chaiwut Thanakamanusorn expressed his hopes for 11cooperation between the Thai government and Huawei to 12 the country's digital economy, which is targeted to1330 percent of the GDP by 2030.

According to a joint report released by Google, Temasek and Bain & Company earlier this month Thailand's digital economy is expected to 14 $30 billion this year, up 51 percent, making it the second-largest market in Southeast Asia after Indonesia.

Huawei's Rotating Chairman Guo Ping said the company will continue 15and building a tech ecosystem to facilitate faster digitalization in Asia-Pacific, and invest $100 million over the next three years to build a startup ecosystem in the region.

China's cultural relic protection has made progress, but many problems still exist and need to be solved. China has made over 301based on the law of cultural relic protection.

China has also2four international agreements concerning cultural relic protection and investment in cultural relic protection has also3.

Statistics show that from 2000 to 2005 when China carried out its 10th FiveYear Development Plan, total investment in the field47.889 billion yuan. With financial support from government, China also started a nationwide campaign to search and5cultural relics in 2003.

China has so far included a total of 2,351 cultural relic sites and 518 intangible (无形的) cultural relics on the6of national protected items. Recovery and protection have been7on important cultural relic sites such as the Potala Palace in Tibet and the Palace Museum in Beijing.

And cultural relics12by minority ethnic groups have lost their character due to the13 lifestyle of the people.

Therefore, we should keep our mind clear and take14to better protect cultural relics, and15the whole society to take part in this cause.
