You might dream of fluency in this or that language, and maybe you've already achieved fluency in a foreign language..

Fluency, like all abstract terms, has no universal meaning. Each individual must determine what the term means..

Perfect fluency means knowing every word you encounter, speaking quickly, clearly and easily and having no accent.. You aren't familiar with every word of your native language, and sometimes you have to search for the right word, even in your mother tongue.

Quick fluency is the type of fluency you see in advertisements, because “Master a Language in Two Months!” sounds way catchier than “Fluency in Twenty Years!”. It is possible to achieve quick fluency, but the fluency achieved after such a short time frame will be a very thin, superficial fluency.

. Native-like fluency means that you generally know all the same words that a native knows and can speak at the same pace with the same amount of ease as a native speaker. You will likely have an accent, but as long as your conversation partner can understand you, it doesn't matter.

Literary fluency is like graduating from native-like to educated-native-like fluency. It focuses on the more intellectual(知识性的) side of a language: indulging in literature, attending university, composing song lyrics, etc.

There are a ton of other things that fluency could potentially(可能地) be, but that's up to you to figure out.

A. It sounds too good to be true.

B. However, Nobody is “perfectly fluent” in any language.

C. Quick fluency is good if you have some sort of deadline.

D. But have you ever considered what fluency really means?

E. But does fluency have the same meaning to other person as it does to you?

F. Unlike perfect fluency, native-like fluency is a reasonable and attainable goal.

G. To assist you in determining what fluency is, I'll describe a few different types of fluency.

Expressing gratitude regularly is a wonderful habit to your children. In fact, studies have shown that people who feel gratitude on a daily basis are happier in general. Today we'll discuss ideas to help your children express their gratitude.

Make a gratitude tree. Start with a large piece of craft paper and draw a tree trunk. Then ask the kids to paint or color it in brown. Each day ask your kids to think of something they're thankful for.And they'll have a gratitude tree full of leaves one day.

Express your thankfulness to the ones you love.Print the photos in a 5'×7'size and ask the kids to write a short note on the back explaining why they're grateful to that person. Family members, especially those who don't live nearby, will cherish the present.

Pick a regular time, maybe one Saturday a month, and do some voluntary jobs as a family. One child may want to spend a day helping to clean up their favorite park while another might want to read books to nursing home residents.

Go grocery shopping for a family in need. Many stores now offer pre-made bags to donate right at the checkout line. While this is convenient, the larger the role they play in the act of giving, the bigger the effect it will have on your kids.

Taking time as a family to practice gratitude doesn't have to be difficult or time-consuming and the benefits your children will get are long-lasting.

A. It will make the experience much more powerful.

B. Let kids take pictures of themselves with their loved ones.

C. Keep gratitude journals.

D. Volunteer together.

E. If you can find a charity where you deliver the groceries , that's even better.

F. Write it on a green leaf and tape it to the tree trunk.

G. Let family members take turns to pick an activity that means something to them.

If you were like most kids, your mother told you there were three no-no's when it came to your fingers: Don't put them in an electrical outlet, don't stick them up your nose ( at least not in public ), and don't use them when you are counting. But experts in education and cognition now believe that using your fingers to do math is not only a perfectly good idea but may even help children become superior students.

It certainly makes sense. When children count on their fingers, they take an abstract concept— mathematics—and translate it into the most basic and visual form. Even when we aren't actually counting on them, they still can help us on math problem,

It activates when we respond to heat, pressure, pain, or the use of a given finger. Studying brain scans, researchers discovered that when students aged 8 to 13 work on subtraction (减法) equations, this region “lights up” on the scans, even if the students aren't using their fingers. The more complex the problem, the more activities are detected.

The connection between finger use and math ability has been shown on old-fashioned math tests as well. With their eyes closed, first graders were asked to identify which of their fingers a researcher was touching,When college students were given the same quiz, the highest scores once again performed best on calculation tests.

So what does all this mean? For one thing, parents and teachers shouldn't discourage children from counting on their fingers.Memorizing the multiplication tables may help, but it is not the best option. “I would like to see interesting and creative representations of ideas.” says Jo Boaler, a professor of math education.

Recently, a series of activities have been designed to strengthen students' perception of their fingers. Maybe in the near future, there will be only two no-no 1s regarding the use of fingers.

A. The first two laws of fingers are as true as ever.

B. There is a section of the brain, called the somatosensory finger area.

C. Researchers also stress that students simply learn better using visual tools.

D. Researchers are unimpressed by those students who finish quickly as well.

E. In fact, experts believe the brain is able to “see” a representation of our fingers.

F. That may sound simplistic, but the researchers offer an interesting explanation.

G. Researchers found those scoring highest on the finger-ID questions scored higher on a math test.

A. Healthy eating can sometimes be expensive, with food prices on the rise.

B. Take time to chew your food and enjoy mealtimes.

C. Rather, it's about feeling great, having more energy, and keeping yourself as healthy as possible.

D. After dinner snacks tend to be high in fat, so they're best avoided anyway.

E. However, some vegetables can be harmful when eaten in large quantities.

F. Healthy eating is about more than just the food on your plate.

G. Try to eat a variety of fruit and vegetables every day and with every meal—the brighter, the better.

Healthy eating is not just about strict nutrition philosophies, staying unrealistically thin, or avoiding the foods you love. If you form the following simple habits, you'll soon notice the difference.

It's not just what you eat, but how you eat. Healthy eating habits can be learned and it is important to slow down and think about food as nourishment rather than just something to swallow on the way to school or work.

Chew your food slowly, tasting every bite. We tend to rush through our meals, forgetting to actually taste the flavours of our food. Reconnect with the joy of eating.

Eat breakfast, and eat smaller meals throughout the day. A healthy breakfast can speed up your digestion. Eating small, healthy meals throughout the day keeps your energy up.

Avoid eating at night. Try to eat dinner earlier in the day and then fast for 14-16 hours until breakfast the next morning. Early studies suggest that this simple dietary adjustment—eating only when you're most active and giving your digestive system a long break every day—may help to control your weight.

Fill up on colorful fruit and vegetables. Fruit and vegetables are the foundation of a healthy diet. Colorful, deeply colored fruit and vegetables contain higher amounts of vitamins and minerals, and different colors provide different benefits.

Babies have the charm to melt anybody's heart instantly; no one escapes the twinkling eyes or the innocent smile. Just their presence will cheer you up, make you forget your worries and tempt you to indulge into their world.Though I don't have any answer to the question, I wonder as to what makes their aura so desirable. And I think there is something we can learn from the young ones.

Forgive and Forget

Babies can laugh and giggle all day because they don't keep hatred against anyone.

Do you think they've constructed an evil plan against you because you refused them candy last time? Probably not, life moved on and so did they. So why do we hold on to our past and refuse to let go of the emotional baggage? Does it do us any good except prevent us from laughing to the fullest?

Endless questions of young kids can sometimes be enough to drain the adult mind. They are always busy wondering how things work or why things are the way they are, leaving no room for boredom. Their curiosity gives them an exponential learning curve; they pick up new things quickly and do not refuse to change.

    Unconditional Love

They don't judge you before they come running into your knees and they don't walk away if you don't give them the same in return. They have no expectations from you and simply do what their heart desires. If you want a hug, they'll give you a hug; if you want two, they'll give you two. So how does the adult world become so materialistic that we decide what we give based on what we think we might receive?

Living life to the fullest is not a difficult task; you just need to have the right attitude and an open mind.

A. Keep smile every day

B. Never-ending Curiosity

C. What can we do to free from these worries?

D. Why do we adore the young ones so much?

E. So don't envy the peaceful life of a baby, start living it yourself!

F. Kids have a hug and a kiss for anyone and everyone who wants one.

G. Their heart is pure and their mind empty to laugh out loud and enjoy the moment.

This summer, when earthquakes rocked Southern California on back-to-back days, it was a close-to-home reminder that we may one day experience the "Big One," a quake with the power to kill and destroy. A few people, however, saw something else: a photo opportunity. Tourists poured to a large crack in a highway to see evidence of the damage for themselves and, of course, take a quick selfie.

It feeds so many of the weakest parts of ourselves: our born attraction to images of human faces instead of landscapes or objects, our interest in capturing memories, and yes, our need for social approval. Yet, it is easy to feel uncomfortable with selfies and even laugh at them, especially when they are risky or in bad taste. So why do we take selfies?

Selfies have become so common that my grandma does them when we get together. Instead, selfies are a way for us to connect and communicate, and feel a more personal connection with people all around the world.

In one example, researchers developed a #ScientistsWhoSelfie campaign studying how scientists posting photos of themselves with their work on social media influenced public opinion of the profession. "Those scientists in general were described as warmer, but no less competent," said Paige Jarreau, the lead author on the study.

While some scientists refused at first, fearing that their colleagues would consider them self-centered or think they take their work less seriously, those concerns disappeared once researchers explained that it could help build public trust. "This is not just me taking a duck-faced (嘟嘟嘴) selfie or trying to look cute on camera," said Dr Jarreau. "This is me being able to better tell the story about my science in a way that helps people trust me."

Dr Jarreau recalled a road trip she made to national parks, where she witnessed so many people taking selfies, she began taking photos of the selfie-takers themselves. "Ask yourself: Why are you posting that picture?" she said. "If there was a platform that didn't enable likes, would you post it?" After all, there are other ways to develop a social connection. You could send the photo to a private group. You could put it in a frame at home. You could be mindful in the moment by not taking it at all.

A. But if you do, watch your step.

B. There is no denying the draw of the selfie.

C. With each like, we feel better about ourselves.

D. The thought that selfie is the symbol of self-love is outdated.

E. However, most of us post mechanically, even madly, in our daily lives.

F. After all, people have been making self-portraits for long, in remarkably similar ways.

G. They found that photos with human faces helped improve impressions in a field that is often subject to negative stereotypes.

How to Be a Good Tourist

We travel not only for work but also for fun and learning. Restaurants, galleries, temples and architecture...These places are like homes for people who live and work there. How would you want visitors to behave in your own home? There are many ways of doing this without sacrificing our own holiday.

Do your homework. Guides will help you when you get to the site, but is that the best place to go? Is it popular only because the one-day tourist can see it easily or because it is really a worthwhile place to visit? You'd better check it out.

Walk around, even if in the streets closest to your hotel. Eat in local restaurants. Talk to the locals. Learn a few in the local language and use them. You will surely get a smile from the hotel staff and street sellers.

Help preserve the sites. Most of the sites you visit may be visited by millions of people a year, so care needs to be taken to allow others to enjoy them as well. Some of these monuments are so old and fragile that they are sensitive to the touch of hands or bags and shows. This way, you don't encourage the use of those plastic bags that fly all over many sites.

And here's the big one — good manners are nearly universal. If that doesn't sound like you, then give the world a break and stay home.

A. Experience the place.

B. Always have a cloth bag with you.

C. Read about the places you want to visit.

D. Try to buy something from the local stores.

E. A good tourist is polite, positive and eco-sensitive.

F. We've cleaned up after ourselves and taken only good memories.

G. I think we would like them to make it a little better because of their visit.

Many people believe that heart disease only affects older men. .The reality is that people of all ages die of heart attacks each year. And while death rates have declined in the U.S. and many western European countries, they are on the rise in the developing world. Yet most heart disease is preventable.

The challenge of heart disease is that it may be silent for years before causing any noticeable problems. No one would have guessed that Barbara Teng would have a heart attack. She was not overweight. "In 2014, the week after I turned 49 when I was on a business trip in Chicago I had a major heart attack," she said. . She now exercises daily and monitors her heart health.

Dr. Patrice Nickens who is with the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute thinks that heart disease is 82 percent preventable. " ," she said ."Men are also facing the same problem and the key to staying healthy is knowing your numbers". "Your weight ,your blood cholesterol blood sugar and your blood pressure are important numbers that can help you take action and reduce your risk ," she said. ."And the steps to take are simple: don't smoke, maintain a healthy weight, exercise, know your numbers and talk to your physician and control these risks," she said.

African-Americans are at higher-than-average risk for heart disease and stroke; people don't even know they have it, which increases the risk. Medstar Washington Hospital Center is trying to reach this population. .For example, they help the people monitor their blood pressure. If people realize they are at risk for heart disease, they'll make lifestyle changes: lose weight, exercise, eat the right foods and keep in touch with a doctor.

Whether they're for a teenager or not, all great stories have certain elements: they have interesting characters we enjoy reading about; they show these characters in a world we can recognize and understand.

The main character faces a problem, usually quite a serious one. The thing that most draws us to reading the story is the way the character deals with the problem—whether the character gets the better of it, or it gets the better of the character.

Characters in a book for young adults are generally young adults themselves. On the one hand, they're not children anymore. They're growing up and want to stretch their wings. On the other hand, they're not yet adults. They can't do certain things, as they're not yet able to do them or because the world tells them that they can't.

To make things even more complicated, almost all young adults feel at some point that the whole growing-up process is happening too quickly.

This year, TEENS has selected seven of the ten books, nominated (提名) for the US 2017 National Book Awards in the categories of Young People's Literature.

Some stories are specifically written for teenagers or young adults, meaning that their authors are very sensitive to the "in-between" nature of teenage life. They're about problems that appear for young people because of tensions between them and their parents and teachers, their siblings (兄弟姐妹),or wider society. Often, these problems are presented very seriously by writers.

At the same time, fiction isn't supposed to be just about the challenges people face in life, but also about how people overcome those problems. They discover something about themselves that they never knew before, and which enables them to succeed. And the solution that they find opens the future up to them, setting them on the path to adulthood.

A. They want to hold back a little and remain a child a little longer.

B. But that's what young adults want in fiction; to be taken seriously.

C. When closing a good book, we feel we've learned something about ourselves.

D. These are stories that someone of any age could pick up and enjoy.

E. And they are in a challenging period of life.

F. But most importantly, great stories have a central drama.

G. To some degree, challenges bring out the best in characters.

Directions: Read the following passage. Fill in each blank with a proper sentence given in the box. Each sentence can be used only once. Note that there is one sentence more than you need.

Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan province, has an ancient rivalry with Chongqing, a city to its south-east. Residents of Chongqing accuse their Chengdu cousins of being pompous (自大的).. Both cities share a love of spice-laden Sichuan cuisine, which in recent decades has conquered Chinese palates (味觉). But they are at war over which has the best Sichuan hotpot—a type of DIY-cooking that involves boiling vegetables and slices of meat in a communal broth with chillies and numbing peppercorns.

It describes how it developed from a method used to make cheap offcuts of meat taste delicious. But Chengdu is playing catch-up. In January the city sold a plot of land on condition that the developer build a hotpot museum on part of it. Such presumptuous behaviour will test the famous fiery tempers of Chongqing-ites. Chengdu may be the capital of Sichuan cuisine's eponymous province, but Chongqing was part of Sichuan for long periods of history until 1997. It is now the capital of its own province-sized region, which is also called Chongqing.

The two cities are among many in China with their own styles of hotpot. The stories behind these dishes reveal how different regions like to see themselves. Chongqing's is said to highlight the ingenuity (心灵手巧) of the proletariat (工人阶级). Other places describe their hotpots as the sophisticated food of emperors. Some say theirs have military origins: warriors on the march boiling scraps in their helmets. Hotpot contents are equally diverse. To keep warm in winter, Beijingers boil fatty lamb in a berry broth.

Some older Sichuanese disown it altogether. They complain that it is causing an escalation of chilli-use in other dishes that drowns out subtle flavours. Chua Lam, a celebrity food critic based in Hong Kong, caused a stir in December when he wished hotpot would disappear from the face of the Earth. He dismissed it as "the most uncultured form of cooking", requiring no real culinary knowledge.

A. A private museum in Chongqing, opened several years ago, makes the case for Chongqing-style hotpot.

B. But Chengdu's plans for a museum suggest that Sichuan hotpot is not only growing in popularity, but is also becoming iconic.

C. Not all Chinese warm to hotpot.

D. The people of Chongqing are hotheads, Chengdu dwellers shoot back

E. Because Sichuan-style broths are the most commonly savoured in China.

F. Mint-suffused Yunnanese hotpot reflects the province's links with South-East Asia.

Teachers love to put students into teams.  Why? Because they know the responsible team members will come through for a good grade.

If you are teamed up with a student who is lazy, the worst thing you can do is let it get you down. and it might create a positive change in your partner!

Try these tips for working with a slacker (懒虫).

●Be excited and provide a good example. Your slacker may be a good person who has developed bad work habits. You may be able to teach your partner some valuable skills for a successful future.

●Think rewards!  For instance, you could promise to make cupcakes for the next work meeting and encourage your partner to bring a good snack.

●Make some time to sit with your partner and establish a set of work rules and deadlines. Don't quarrel, though. Make it clear that you would like to establish rules to keep you both on track. Keep a record of your rules, your initial meetings, and your work. When it becomes obvious in the records that you're doing all the work, talk with the slacker.

A. Don't let the anger and pain defeat you.

B. Come up with a great reward for meeting some goal.

C. Instead, take some steps to encourage your partner to work.

D. Unavoidably one or more members will try to do nothing.

E-waste is fast becoming a serious problem around the world. This report will examine this problem and provide some possible ways to solve it.

It is often cheaper to buy new products than to repair old ones. Also, through clever advertising, companies always encourage people to change their old TVs, mobile phones and computers for the latest models. E-waste is created when we throw away old ones. In the EU alone, about 8,700,000 tons of e-waste is produced each year. Sadly, just over 1,000,000 tons is recycled. Burying (填埋) e-waste or burning it cause serious problems for the environment. These things can then get into the ground or pollute the air when they are burnt. However, their plans are not always managed properly. Sometimes electronics are just sent to poor countries such as Ghana. Here they are often burnt in public areas, which is very bad for people's health, Setting up recycling centers is a good way to solve this problem. E-cycling centers could recycle the parts that can be reused and deal with the rest properly. This means that producers must take back old products. They should then make sure old products are properly recycled or reused. As for us, we should try to cut down on e-waste. And don't buy a product just to have the latest model. E-waste is a serious problem in the modern world. Both producers and users must take actions and try to keep it to the smallest amount.

A. Change electronics only when we have to.

B. We live in a society that is producing and using electronics all the time.

C. Electronics have dangerous things in them.

D. We should change our electronics as soon as possible.

E. In recent years, many countries have started recycling e-waste.

F. Electronics are safe things so we don't need to change them.

G. Another way is to make producers responsible for their used products.

Every child should know some basic first aid skills. This is true whether your child is four or fourteen.

Calling for help

Once your child reaches the age of four, he should know all about calling 911 in the event of an emergency.

For example, he should call 911 if an adult asks him to, if an adult passes out and cannot be woken, if there is a fire and he can't findan adult, or if people are hurt.

As I am typing this, I just realized that although my kids are taught about 911, the telephones inthe house are out of reach for all but my oldest child (to prevent the other two from playing with the phone). Don't make this mistake yourself. You do hope your children can get in touch with the police intime.

Teach children about basic care for cuts and scrapes. In my house, the kids all know that cuts must be cleaned and know where the bandages are.  Asking an adult for help is necessary. Paper waste is a major contribution to the total waste at landfills. Over two million trees are cut down for global paper consumption every day. This article will teach you some ways to reduce paper waste.

Write on both sides of the paper. It may seem as if simply writing on both sides of the paper is not helpful. The back of a piece of paper can be used for other purposes. If you don't want to do this right away, consider keeping a box of the paper that you've only used one side of, so you can easily have the paper whenever you need it.

Taking paper notes can use up a lot of paper, which is harmful to the environment. Instead, use a computer or your smartphone. You could use a sticky note tool, note app, or word processor to do this. Programs such as Evernote and OneNote are some examples of cheap note taking apps.

Limit how much you print. While it may be easier to print documents, there are some disadvantages to printing. Meanwhile, They may take up a lot of space. Thus, print out documents only if you absolutely need to. Instead, save them electronically whenever possible.

Use cloth bags instead of paper ones. Typically, paper bags aren't made using recycled materials, and they usually tear easily. Also, the fertilizers and other chemicals that are used to make paper and for tree farming are acid rain contributors, and they also contribute to higher rates of waterway eutrophication.

A. But in fact, it can help a lot.

B. Printed documents tend to get lost.

C. Take notes on your computer or smartphone.

D. In this way, they may be used for a longer time.

E. It's better to save them on your computer than to print them out.

F. Cloth ones, therefore, are a more environmentally friendly choice.

G. Trees are an important component of nature, so it's important to save them.

If your Internet or cable bill is more than you can afford — or suddenly looks higher than you signed up for — you're hardly alone. Many American Internet and cable TV companies employ a shell game of limited-time promotions and hidden, variable service fees to get us to pay more over time.  Here are some tricks I learned from Internet service providers and consumer advocates.

Check the website Broadband Now to find all the available service providers specific to your Zip code. The site's database is one of the best, though not all the options listed will necessarily offer speeds sufficient to keep a whole family online all at once. If you're lucky enough to have options, you could even switch providers after promotional pricing runs out.

Just threaten to drop service. Many Internet service providers would rather cut your rates to keep you as a customer than try to win you back later. Calling and threatening to quit isn't fun for you or the person working in the customer-retention department, but it can work. Ask to have access to the latest promotional offer for your area. Don't be mean:

Buy your own modem and router. When you get Internet, you need two pieces of hardware to make it work: a modem and a router (sometimes combined into one box called a gateway). Most companies provide their own, and even set it up and then charge you to rent it from $10 to $25 per month. But you don't have to rent their equipment — you can buy your own. In my house, I use a $150 Arris Surfboard modem plugged into a $130 Eero router for WiFi. It might even work better than what your provider is renting.

A. Try to switch providers.

B. Sign up for the discount program.

C. Just remember to set a calendar reminder.

D. So what can you do now if your bill is just too high?

E. You catch more flies with honey than you do with vinegar.

F. This approach will cost you more first but will save you in the long run.

G. You could try calling your city officials and tell them you need more options.

We know that choosing a college major can be very hard. But have no fear! Your choice of major will not lock you into a specific career for the rest of your life. Here's what you need to know about college majors before you commit.

What is a major?

Beyond general college requirements, you'll also take a group of courses in a subject of your choosing such as Chemistry, Literature,or Political Science.

How important is my major?

The major you choose will neither predict nor guarantee your future. Many graduates find jobs that have nothing to do with what they studied in college. If you intend to earn a professional degree after college, you will probably need certain courses.

When do I declare a major?

This varies widely across schools and programs. Others require that you declare upon a major by the time that you set foot inside your first class.

Definitely. One of the most exciting aspects of college life is that it introduces you to new subjects and arouses new passions. However, keep this in mind that every major has necessary coursework. If you change your major late in the game,it may take more than the traditional four years to earn a degree.

What are minors and double majors?

If one field of study doesn't satisfy your intellectual appetite, consider a minor. A minor is similar to a major in that it's an area of academic concentration.A double major provides you with an understanding of two academic fields. It allows you to become familiar with two sets of values and views while it also requires you to fulfill two sets of requirements.

A. Can I change my mind?

B. Is my major time-consuming?

C. It's your specialized area of study in college.

D. Most students find one major is more than enough.

E. Some schools may give you one year or more to decide.

F. But many future doctors major in non- science related fields.

G. The only difference is that it doesn't require as many classes.
